An armed society is a polite society.
Nope, not really. There are unspoken premises behind that statement that do not universally apply. Think about the "armed" neighborhoods in some inner cities in America. They are not polite, and worse than Dodge City in the 19th Century with cattle drives. Angry, gang -driven violence is the norm. And a lot of them are armed. Posted by: Someguy at October 15, 2019 09:34 AM (6GjnW) This is a very nice effect and pretty reminiscent of the Baroque era. Having the light source in the work allows for some nice lighting effects and contrasts, but blocking the said light source keeps it from dominating the work. It also creates that really great silhouette right in the center of the work. That figure really attracts my eye. Posted by: Kris at October 15, 2019 09:39 AM (OyyDO) 27

For an armed society to make a polite society, there has to be some semblance of a society. It doesn't work where the social fabric has utterly decayed. It won't magically turn rival tribes, gangs, or warlords into gentlemen.

"Think about the "armed" neighborhoods in some inner cities in America.
They are not polite, and worse than Dodge City in the 19th Century with cattle drives" they are more polite when both sides are armed. If gangs are running parts of town, it is because society has broken down, and the cops with guns haven't done their job (and/or are ordered to stand down). The solution to criminal impolite gangs is to incarcerate or kill them. It has (probably) always been so, to some degree. We must to do the same to the very impolite DeepState that has taken ruthless control of our liberty minded nation. Posted by: illiniwek at October 15, 2019 09:44 AM (Cus5s) 38

Great! Another Remington painting. I like how he uses light in the scene to make a bubble of life and uncertainty against the darkness of the huge expanse outside the fire. The sense of isolation and aloneness (is that a word?) heightens the tension in the scene. Will the Indians rob him, kill him for the contents of the wagon and his horse? Maybe just ask for some coffee. There are three of them and only two barrels in the shotgun and no quick way to reload. Tension. The trader is utterly alone with no hope for help. Tension. There are three potential threats that can be seen but are others out there? Tension. And all this in an image that has almost no sense of motion or action.

You WILL marry my daughter! Posted by: rickb223 at October 15, 2019 09:40 AM (FYqfs) That reminds me of a joke: A mountain man walks into the local sawbones' office. With him is a young man limping badly. "My son-in-law's been shot in the leg, doc," says the older man. "Can you help him?" "Let me take a look," the doctor says. The younger man props up his leg and the doctor takes a long look. "That's a bad shot right in the knee, but I think I can fix it," the doctor says. "How did it happen?" "I shot him," the mountain man replies. "Well, now, why in the hell would you shoot your own son-in-law?" "To be honest with you, doc," was the answer, "He weren't my son-in-law when I shot him." I like that one, but it really does depend on context. An armed society of nice middle class Americans is probabaly going to be a polite society anyway. An armed society of high time preference, low average IQ, and low impulse control slum dwellers is going to be a lethal shithole. A certain level of civilization is required for a society to be both armed and polite.
Just like a certain level of civilization is required for a society to have various public accommodations, like libraries and art museums and restaurants. The social contract between civilized individuals allows such things to exist without being destroyed immediately, and being armed keeps those places from being overrun by the uncivilized. When the uncivilized become too big of a proportion of the whole, you get Detroit. The civilized with any brains get out, and leave it to the uncivilized to plunder. As has been said ad nauseum, if people were going to be indicted they would have already been indicted. You do not need an investigation tied all up in a pretty bow before you can start handing off criminal referrals. Being as now it looks like the report is looking to be delayed till at least November, the possibility of indictments and prosecutions before the election is now finished. Which means, for there to be any possibility of justice being administered to the coup plotters, it's going to have to come from somewhere else and not the DOJ, oh and Trump has to win re-election, which is not a certainty. The Deep State has essentially won. Posted by: Gossamer Penguin at October 15, 2019 10:09 AM (gaSfV) 145

A lot of art has this shifting focus built into it. The classic "looking down the railroad" picture where the painter is playing perspective, draws the eye to the horizon, and a group of figures draws the eye from one to the other faces and hands to make a type of narrative built into the image -- in that case each face and figure tells part of the story as you go to the next.
There is another element to successful pictures which is the golden mean blocking of the painting, that can give that nautilus shell spiral in the picture. And then you have Remington here, who does both of these, but if you notice, the golden mean spiral is at an off-horizontal skew. You start with the figure back lighted by the fire, go to the two figures on the right, the seated figure, and wind up in the hidden fire that lights it all. Wonderful composition that gives action to a bunch of immobile characters standing in the dark, staring at each other. Posted by: Kindltot at October 15, 2019 10:12 AM (xG/b0) 163

We don't know exactly what Bolton said, or when. Rudy cancelled an earlier planned trip to Ukraine iirc. When he went it was with coordination with state, and he reported to them on everything, he says.
The Ukraine new admin' had evidence on the DeepState coup, which our FBI was not interested in (of course not). So Rudy was interested since Trump is his client. It may be that is why Barr and other higher ranking officials (Pompeo) are going overseas to collect evidence. Because Wray and Haspel are using their power to obstruct and run ops against POTUS, so no one under them can be trusted Bolton may have been outside that decision tree ... and his idle comment can't be understood without context. Needless to say every one was trite and about oppression. Just to give you a taste. One had tampons. Another had viagra pills in a glass. Oh and she hated men and her father. Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at October 15, 2019 10:20 AM (ppBhU) On one hand, I think the troglodyte/cannibalism motif was grindhouse indulgence by the director. The movement and outcome of character was along the lines of great Westerns. The echoing gunshots of the dying Sheriff and the noble reflection on the half-wit deputy's face were John Ford material. At the same time, I like to think of the troglodyte motif as a metaphor for the new savagery we face both internally with the Left and with Islam. That's why the story resonated with me. has to be some semblance of a society. It doesn't work where the social fabric has utterly decayed. It won't magically turn rival tribes, gangs, or warlords into gentlemen. The EU has put a COB today deadline on finishing a BREXIT deal with GB. The antisemitic communists of the Labour party sound triumphant, meaning I bet Corbyn has cut his own deal with the EU that will supersede and prevent any government agreement. That fact alone vividly illustrates why BREXIT is necessary.

I should have made clear that the water cleaning applies to black powder guns. "The Grand Illusion" is a very good WW1 story, about a German POW camp in an old castle, and the escape of some of the French inmates. Hitler hated this movie and tried to have all copies destroyed, both because it was anti-war, and also because one of the lead characters is a French Jew who fights honorably and is just like everyone else. Posted by: Kris at October 15, 2019 10:59 AM (OyyDO) King Edward died in 1910 - the very young and inexperienced George V was on the throne in 1914. There's a very good series on King Edward VII which is hard to find now. It emphasized how he had become the Senior Statesman of Europe through all his family ties, and how through great personal effort he managed to stop all the near outbreaks of war while he was King. His funeral in 1910 was probably the most magnificent funeral in history; all of the Royalty of Europe was present. None of them realized at the time that it was in effect the funeral of the European world that had existed for hundreds of years, but which was soon to be wiped away forever. 352 I think a "When Lions Roared" style treatment of July 1914 between the Kaiser, Czar, and King Edward would be fascinating.
Tuchman's description of Edward's funeral in "The Guns of August" and what it meant is interesting. Posted by: Kris at October 15, 2019 11:06 AM (OyyDO) 357

Posted by: Gossamer Penguin at October 15, 2019 11:13 AM (gaSfV) ____ It's easy to win when there is virtually no opposition. Other than Trump, nobody has pushed back against it. One guy alone vs an entire govt apparatus can't do much, unfortunately. Posted by: Lurking Lurker - Not In My Purview at October 15, 2019 11:15 AM (FiUMj) 365
