Friday's Job Numbers Were a Lot Stronger Than the Media Would Have You Believe

The DNC Media spins that job creation is slowing.

Well, a bit, sure. But then, the unemployment rate dropped to a rock-bottom 3.5%. (Five percent unemployment is considered full employment.)

It's hard to create jobs when you're essentially employing everyone who wants to work, or who doesn't want to work but who can be induced to rejoin the workforce, already.

The New York Posts notes the good news:

After months of unemployment holding at 3.7%, the rate dropped to 3.5% in September -- its lowest since 1969. And that was far from the only great news in Friday's jobs report.

Consider the Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers for minorities: Hispanic unemployment dropped to 3.9%, setting a new record, while African American joblessness remained at a record low 5.5%.

And the rate for adults without a high-school diploma dipped to 4.8% -- the first time it’s gone below 5% since BLS started collecting the data in 1992.

Plus: "Wages are up by almost 3%" for the year, noted President Trump, "a fantastic increase for everybody out there working."

Issues & Insights notes that not only is the economy very robust, but it's much stronger than economists said it could be. Not stronger than it would be, but that it was even possible to be.

The article goes back and looks at CBO projections from ten years ago. Back then, economists were predicting a "secular stagnation," a stagnation which wasn't cyclical or due to one or two factors but which was systemic and intrinsic and unavoidable-- sort of like old age just generally degrades a person's health, without there needing to be any particular disease or cause of the deterioration.

It looks like the economy got stronger and younger.

The most surprising thing about the latest unemployment report isn't that the rate dropped to the lowest level since December 1969. It's that unemployment wasn’t supposed to get anywhere near that low under President Trump. At least, not if you believed mainstream Keynesian economists.

The economy created 136,000 jobs in September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics survey of businesses. The separate household survey, which is used to track unemployment, showed that the number of unemployed dropped by 275,000.

Not only did the job market pull 275,000 off the unemployment line last month, it pulled more than 100,000 who had dropped out of the labor force back into the job market.

This is good news, but it continues to confound mainstream economists, who solemnly predicted at the start of Trump’s administration that we faced a "secular stagnation." Any talk of strong economic growth was a fantasy.

When the economy started to outperform expectations, liberals shrugged it off by claiming that the upturn in growth was all baked in the cake when President Obama was president.

That is false.

We can get a sense of the true impact of Trump's economic policies by comparing the actual results since he took office to the forecasts made at that time.

...

The results of this comparison are stark.

[T]he economy is now $590 billion bigger than it was supposed to be.

The CBO projected that unemployment would never get below 4.4%, and would start rising again this year. Instead, the unemployment rate fell from 4% at the start of the year to 3.5%. The current unemployment rate is now a full percentage point below the CBO's forecast. That translates into 1.6 million more people employed than the CBO expected.

Are voters crediting Trump for this yet?

Not sure, but this IBD/TPPP poll shows independents moving strongly towards Trump:

independentstrump

Just to rub NeverTrump's nose in it: one of their several Great White Hopes, their Establishment Liberal Rockefeller Republican Saviors, Nikki Haley -- the woman they were hoping would challenge Trump in a primary -- endorsed Trump wholeheartedly.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing NeverTrump pussies crying over their establishment corporate heroes Marco Rubio and Nikki Haley giving them the sadz.

lolgf, sissies.

50 At least as important is the labor force participation rate. This is noisy but it has been on an uptrend the entire Trump administration - as opposed to flat-lining or declining in the second Obama administration.

Participation rate is *hugely* important and that is also moving the right direction recently. Low unemployment in the face of climbing participation is a hell of a good trend. Participation is still nowhere near where it was before the tech wreck, but it's finally edging in the right direction.

52 I believe people will vote what they see, not what the MSM tells them. I just don't think that many people pay attention to the MSM anymore. They've tuned out. All of this Twitter nonsense affects at most about 1% - 2% of the population.

And even in matters like Turkey, Syria, and Kurdistan, Trump is taking a very populist position, in line with most voters. People feel kind of badly for the Kurds, but they are "over there" and we don't know any of them. What voters are going to get pissed off about is some new initiative that's will get more American soldiers killed and a whole lot more money wasted. Voters simply Do Not Want that shit - that's what all the international interventionists cannot see.

American voters are sick of the middle east, and they're really sick of Americans getting killed there. They want that to end, and they're not too picky about how.

OK, gun nuts, a quesion. A woman and/or her 13 year old brother, shot her sleeping husband to death, single shot from a .22 rifle in the back of the head. Wife says brother did it on his own. Brother first says he don't know nothin' from nothin', then says he held the rifle and had his finger on the trigger but wife put her finger into the trigger guard and squeezed his finger discharging the round, and then he says that although he supplied the rifle (which he though was malfunctioning and would not fire), wife shot husband while brother waited in the car. Although brother was initially convicted, he was eventually acquitted when an expert testified that from the wound, it was unlikely that two people had their fingers on the trigger.

Does anybody understand what the expert was talking about?

That, and economists generally use a number in that range, because above that number, job mobility goes away, which is considered less desirable than 100% employment.

110 The most satisfying part of Germany's recession is that it's happening because of the Climate Control policies (they call it Energiewende) THey have been shutting down coal and nuclear, and telling themselves they can go all wind and solar - they succeeded in shutting things down, but now the rest of the plan is failing miserably. The renewals aren't working like they should, and as a result, Electricity costs for manufacturing plants are up to 5 times as high as they are in Texas, for example.

This is huge because energy costs are one of the highest expenses for any heavy manufacturing facility. All of the heavy manufacturing in Germany is now losing money because of this, with no end in sight. Their only option is to shut down German manufacturing and more their plants to areas (such as the US) where energy costs are vastly less expensive - because they don't have to contend with the idiotic green energy policies.

This, by the way, is why Europe is so frantic about the "Paris Accord" that Obammy tried to sign us up for. It's only real purpose was to drag the US down to Europe's economic level. Without that, Europe's manufacturing base is going to collapse. (and it is)

Because some people are always voluntarily unemployed - moving to a new job with a gap, relocating and needing to find work, etc. There's always some frictional unemployment. How big that frictional unemployment is, and how much of it is "healthy" is up to much debate and I've seen anything from 3% to 6%.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a Cop!) at October 07, 2019 04:53 PM (I2dne)

127 Unemployment will never be 0, since there are always going to be people entering the job market and unemployed, companies going under, people fired, etc.

4-5% is generally accepted as being full employment when taking those people into account.

And remember unemployment rate is just the % of people who WANT to work, but can't find a job. Pookie, who has been on welfare for 25 years, doesn't count as "unemployed" since he has never wanted to work.

Well maybe, buy maybe w/o westerners looking on the Kurds will first execute those non-uniformed terrorists which AFAIK is still legal under the Geneva convention.

Posted by: RoyalOil, Vicroy Canadian Territories at October 07, 2019 04:51 PM (k81AA)

It is considered to be "full employment" level at 5%, because at any one time, some people just quit, a few were fired, and others were interviewing but haven't started yet.

Economists have agreed that this group of people in transition about 5% of cases at any given time. Hence, the "5% is full employment" thing.

A 3.7% rate means things are moving so fast and so good with jobs that people are jumping directly from job to new, better job without even taking time off. And fewer are getting fired /laid off.

237 I can tell how good the economy is based on the number of calls/emails I get from recruiters (real recruiters not Indian boiler room types). Right now the number is about what it was the past 2-3 years, about 1-2 a day. In 2009-11 if I got a call a WEEK it was exciting.

I never figured out what was the angle behind these "Indian boiler room types".

I get a call from them, tell them the only thing I am interested in, they completely ignore what I said and continue on with their script. When finished, I ask them what they proposed has anything to do with what I specified, they go on with yet another script.

I swear, it would be easier and cheaper to use Google Assistant for recruiting, at least the AI would respond in such a way that the target of the call would at least assume some intelligence on the other end.

And what employer would accept any of the resumes from these boiler rooms?

245 Here's another nugget about this incredible economy in today's WSJ. The labor department number is based on hiring in companies. However, the hiring picture in 'Households' is even more impressive:
The unemployment rate fell to a new record low of 3.5% in
September. This series, derived from the Household Survey, fell because
unemployment declined 275k while employment increased 391k. This large
increase is even more impressive considering the fact that it followed a
590k gain in August. Usually, there is payback in the following month
after an outsized gain. Over time, both the Household employment and
payroll series tend to move together. However, the recent divergence is
unusually stark... Over
the last 12 months, nonfarm payrolls increased 2.15 million while the
equivalent series in the Household Survey rose 3.58 million. The
resulting 1.43 million discrepancy is the biggest since July 2009 (1.94
million), which was the first month of economic recovery following the
January 2008 to June 2009 recession...

Also Turkey is a NATO nation, so perhaps the other NATO nations in the region can send some emissaries and find out why Erdogen is being a dick.

As far as Europe goes (which was mentioned upthread), an investment 20 years ago in the SX5E would still be in the red now. The SX5E is their index of large stocks. They traded their growth and dynamism for socialism, and then tried to regain the former by importing savages - the wrong prescription at every step.

288 45 Whatever you do Ace don't mention the elephant in the room

Trump abandoning the Kurds to the Turkish dictator Erdogan's military.

The US was going to abandon the Kurds eventually. The fact it took this long is kinda shocking. The one thing the Kurds had going for them was some amazing PR. Some of the US military thinks the Kurds are the only sane group over there. Some of them think the Kurds are no better then the rest.

What is really, really clear is that if the Kurds are the only thing effectively keeping us in Syria (which I'm not sure of, but its certainly one of the factors) then they were going to go. Trump has been on the path of getting us out of these never ending ground wars as gracefully as possible.

Its shitty. But the world is shitty and its past time we stopped acting like world cops.

BTW, I had a thought last week because of the Greta stuff that maybe the explosion of "spectrum" disorders of the last couple of decades is because political correctness and general leftarded fuckery is short-circuiting the minds of children who are incapable of getting past inconsistencies. That has to suck to have authority figures giving contradictory information.

If that kind of shit isn't mind-wrecking, then why did O'Brien pull it on Winston Smith or that Cardassian on Picard? Picard did tell the boobie counselor after being returned to the ship that he actually did see five lights the last time he was asked.

439 BTW, I had a thought last week because of the Greta stuff that maybe the explosion of "spectrum" disorders of the last couple of decades is because political correctness and general leftarded fuckery is short-circuiting the minds of children who are incapable of getting past inconsistencies

My favorite personal theory as to why there is an "explosion" of spectrum disorders is -

yoghurt!

It's already well known that gut flora can affect mental health.

And people are shoveling yoghurt down their babies' gullets as fast as they can these days.

ie., introducing foreign bacteria into their little nubbins' digestive ecosystem while their brain is developing.

How many of these little "Grandma Wilson's Happy Cow All-Natural Yoghurt Circus" companies -

are truly careful about maintaining the absolute purity of their culture?

I'm guessing not many.

Parent loads the kiddo up on some pathogenic bacteria.

Kiddos has mysterious brain inflammation that shows up in some autistic kids.

Viola! Spectrum kid.

No proof at all for this theory. But, I wish someone would check it out.

Maybe by reintroducing and maintaining healthy gut flora in early autistic kids and see if they improve or are cured.

Can't hurt anyway.

Though there does seem to be some genetic component there in some types.

Heh. We moved to Korea in the late 1970s when the Army sent my father there. Yakult was a popular treat drink, and they had been touting its probiotic effects for over forty years at that point.

You may be right.

I suspect that the recent "explosion" is due to more people looking into this stuff along with the general acceptance of why-me? victimhood.

All that said, I cannot imagine how much shittier life would have been if I had been exposed regularly to contradictory information from authority figures being presented as absolute truth when I was young.
