Dogs Are Amazing Open Thread

Behold the cuteness. Especially the second one.

The website explains:

A veterinary technician's bloodhound, Ruby Jane, is very loving to the rescue kittens.

And you thought it couldn't get any cuter.

Now that I've said something nice about the cute dogs, I want to say, I AGREE, GOSSAMER PENGUIN.

========

we are, realistically, running out of time to administer justice to those that need administering.

It takes up to a year from indictments to trial and with the notoriety and politicization of such trials the motions for continence, change of venue and other motions typical of trials of this type would push the commencement of such a trial well after the election.

And if Trump loses, and I pray that he doesn't, these trials will be put on hold and the next Donk administration will drop them lickety split.

And apparently the white hats don't indict nobody until all of the investigating is done and not as they uncover the crimes.

This is all becoming disturbingly absurd.

104 Was walking past one of those bars with an outdoor patio facing the street last week, with mixed group of inebriated men and women and two large, aggressive dogs on the patio.

As I'm walking past, completely minding my own business, one of the distaff members of the drunken idiot crew yelled "sic 'im, sic' im." Me being the only person in the vicinity was the "'im"

I stopped for a split-second, without even turning around, and said, loudly, "REALLY?" Same female voice said "Sorry, not sorry." The dogs were frantically trying to scramble over the low fence to get at me so I beat it out of there. Soon as I was able to I looked up the bar's number, called and spoke to the manager, and man was he ever PISSED. He said "Yep, I see them right out the window but not for long. They're outta here and will never be welcomed back."

I'm thinking about the local distribution systems. I don't know nuttin' about the Cali grid, but I assume it's like it is everywhere else. It will be the distribution lines that are the biggest spark hazards. The big transmission lines not so much.

So, I'm just wondering how they cut this off, while preserving hospitals and essential public services and shit. The system may not easily be designed for such selective cutting off.

I'm just wondering how this can be done without being a clusterfuck.

Here, they have the two substation requirement. The backup generators do not have to power *everything*, just the life critical systems.

Every room will have red-colored receptacles which are on the generator system. Normal colored receptacles are not.

But I say this seriously - anyone in California who paid attention
to what was going on should have installed a home generator at least a
year ago. AND laid in serious stores of food and fresh water, at least
a months supply. People not willing to make those preparations should
not be taking the risk of living in California anymore. It is not a
safe or sane place to live, not any of it.

and now PG&E is liable for fires, but they have no money. They are flat broke. Because of how the state has foreced them to be run.

To cut this short, now with electricity being generated by thousands of private diesel and gasoline generators, emissions from power generation are going to be an order of magnitude greater than they would have been if they had followed a rational energy supply policy, like everyone in the Energy business advised them to do.

I'm sure that most of you have already heard about the Rockets GM, who tweeted in support of the Hong Kong protestors. That tweet has since been deleted, and both the GM and the NBA have apologized to the PRC.

Meanwhile, Blizzard was apparently holding its championship for a game called Hearthstone. Hearthstone is a nominally free to play online 1v1 collectable card game (the game doesn't cost anything to play; but paying will allow you to acquire packs of new cards much more quickly than not paying). The player that won took advantage of the media platform that Blizzard was providing, and issued a statement in support of the Hong Kong protests. In response, Blizzard banned the player from Hearthstone, and confiscated his winnings from the championship.

That's where this gets really maddening - PG&E already basically asked the State to take them over. The State looked at it and realized that PG&E needs from $35 - $40 Billion in financing just to get out of bankruptcy, and maybe that much again to upgrade their system physically. (who really knows how much that will cost) California doesn't have the money to take on an extra $100 billion in costs right now.

That's the price of standing by and doing nothing for 20 years while a system is allowed to run into the ground.

Wiring and electrical requirements for hospitals are quite stringent. Back when I was in, my boss wouldn't even touch health care work because of it. Made it too expensive, and the liability was too much.

One I remember. Grounding requirements. The safety ground system had to be able to handle full fault current the circuit could supply, and not exceed a certain voltage drop per length carrying said fault current.

This meant the equipment ground conductors had to be *bigger* than the other, normal current carrying conductors.

And you had to test that voltage drop.

The idea was to limit any possible voltage you might be exposed to during such a short/fault event.

----------------

This specific bit of nonsense is due to the enviro nuts. You see, PG and E is prohibited - by state law - from cutting brush back from the powerlines. So when the vegetation gets dry, then if a powerline out in a rural area sparks, its guaranteed to start a fire. Massive lawsuit ensues, and PG and E loses lots of money as a result. It doesn't matter how close to bankruptcy the company starts because its going to get there eventually if this sort of thing keeps up.

=======

For many years after we bought our house we were still one of the few neighborhoods in our large south FL city without city water. We were on well water so dependant on pumps which ran on electricity. Every hurricane that hit and every strong thunderstorm taught us to be prepared.

269 Excuse me, I erred. The green dot is not to be confused with the green triangle. The green dot simply indicates hospital grade (the most expensive, above industrial grade).

Isolated ground is indicated by a green triangle.

That's confusing, and the difference may not be evident without close inspection.

Generac 10k for your house running on NG is about $10k plus install which may be almost as much.

Their site quotes a starting price at $2000, which is probably just the fridge. I'm sure it costs every bit of what you say. Maybe combined with a gas generator would be the way to go. At some point you won't be able to get gas from the pumps though.

Posted by: dartist at October 08, 2019 09:36 PM (K22Va)

274 But, I find that whole house generators are an extreme bargain on Facebook marketplace. But you'll have a harder time getting an install because you'll need someone to do the gas and the electrical, and they may not be thrilled doing a used one.

Not a trick, it's the law.

Transfer switch. Needs to disconnect your house from utility so that your generator won't send any juice up the utility way when people might need to work on it.

I was just looking. Orange color is now supposed to indicate isolated ground receptacles -- in health care facilities.

Apparently it's not completely standardized, and some times the triangle indicator is orange, not green.

So, an orange colored outlet in a hospital should be an isolated ground. And it should have a green triangle to indicate it as well.

In other setting you may see a white, ivory, or other color with an orange triangle for isolated ground.

It's been years since I last was up on the latest standards. I need to catch up.

The cheapest way to have a smallish (not whole house) generator set up, which can be small or medium is to install a subpanel. Put your "emergency loads" on that (being mindful of total load).

They make some inexpensive "generator subpane" with manual transfer switch arrangments, usually a breaker interlocked with another to prevent back feed to the main panel.

I run a household UPS system. Plenty of battery for the usual things. Electrical conditioners for all of the electronics (which includes dishwasher, fridge and other appliances with circuit board controllers).

Austin isn't exactly hurricane country, but having a Natural Gas/LP generator available is good for emergency backup when the power fails. Not sure I would need to fire up the generator right away unless the A/C needed to be run. Would likely wait for the refrigerator to need a cycle before switching on.

The UPS batteries are good for quite a long stretch to keep the computers, routers and other gee gaws running.

It's probably changed a lot, but you can have two classes of emergency back up loads. Those that can tolerate some delay, and those that require uninterruptible power. And requirements for what equipment should tolerate what.

So, the generators had to be fully online within a certain time period (30 s, maybe a minute or two). The others were then on some system that would meet the uninterruptible standard.

Keeping generators running and synced with the grid supply is one way.

357 That's the point the story made was that it was a very high population
for the time for any settlement. I dunno, just seems like a stretch of a
comparison.

My guess is they're using percentages of population, perhaps without mentioning that (and assuming it's an known thing).

Granted, but if you had to have one, would you prefer to have it in: August in Louisiana, January in North Dakota, or October in California?

359 Our Pepper dog (who was raised by out now-gone Mickel cat) has raised Madison The Cat. Pepper goes out to teetee or other and Madison yowls the whole time (2 minutes?) she is out of sight. Pepper gets awarded with a cookie (dog treat) when she comes back in and Madison gets a cat treat at the same time (for doing absolutely not a damn thing). I think Madison might be a democat.

361 Not sure if 10k is enough to handle usual household loads. 22k lets you live a normal life rather than enumerating all of the running devices before deciding to run the dishwasher.

10K will get you by but nothing with a large heating element

you mainly need water pump, boiler and heating fridge, and a few lights and outlets

20 - 25KW will generally be enough for whole house. Unless you're going to run your heat pump with back-up electric strips with the electric stove going wide open.

370 OK, keep seeing the story about a 'NYC like' metropolis found in
Northern Israel around 5000 years old. So I took a look at the story
(from the Jerusalem post.) 6000 inhabitants. No mention of what makes it
NYC-like aside from being populous. Bagels?

What was the world's population at the time?

BUT I had been bothered since it looked like his trial had been put off til next May, but now I see I wasn't getting the whole picture. Avenatti's trial for trying to extort Nike starts next month; his trial for defrauding Stormy starts in April, and his trial for defrauding his other clients plus income tax fraud starts next May. He's going to be a busy boy.
