The Morning Rant

"So, the Ukraine narrative has collapsed worse than Adam Schiff's credibility because it was obvious that the alleged whistleblower (i.e. leaker) didn't have first-hand knowledge of what he reported. In fact, the rules were changed in August, suspiciously close to the time he came forward, to allow second-hand knowledge to be used in whistleblower complaints. This is such an obviously phoney-baloney set-up that only someone as credulous as, well, pretty much anyone in the national media believe it.

"So it became general knowledge that not having any first-hand knowledge does not make for a credible whistleblower complaint.

"Guess what happened next?

"You're right, a *second* whistleblower has allegedly come forward. And, wouldn't you know it, the lawyer is claiming that this whistleblower does have first-hand knowledge. Wow! What a fantastic coincidence! Just when the whistleblower criteria is settled in the public mind, Trump's enemies pull one out of their ~~ass~~ that that precisely meets the now-known requirements.

"If the rules were that whistleblowers had to be left-handed Lithuanian midgets who enjoyed eating pickles while wearing pink frilly dresses, you can be sure that somewhere, somehow, the Democrats would be able to dig one up. This is basically the same play they ran with Kavanaugh. When it became obvious that Christine Doctor Ford was pretty much lying her ass off, suddenly, a number of other "credible" witnesses suddenly materialized out of thin air, each one with a kinky Kavanagh story more unbelievably bizarre than the previous one, until finally they had Kavanaugh as the captain of a pirate ship doing rape runs up and down the eastern seaboard in between celebratory keggers.

"And nobody in the media bothered asking the obvious question: "hey, where were all these supposedly 'credible' witnesses during any of Kavanaugh's previous confirmation hearings?"

"And this is what we're seeing again. It seems that the "Kavanaugh 2-step" is the only play the Democrats have in their playbook."

Joker is phenomenal on so many different levels, raw film making, cinematography, story and acting by both Joaquin Phoneix, who should win the Oscar going away, and also the supporting actors.

There are some elements of the story that reminded me of Jacobs ladder and the Thin Red Line.

I would highly recommend everyone see it in a theater and soon before it gets spoiled by people revealing it.

Joker is phenomenal on so many different levels, raw film making, cinematography, story and acting by both Joaquin Phoneix, who should win the Oscar going away, and also the supporting actors.

There are some elements of the story that reminded me of Jacobs ladder and the Thin Red Line.

I would highly recommend everyone see it in a theater and soon before it gets spoiled by people revealing it.

I saw an article the other day that mentioned Alan Moore was sorry for The Killing Joke, saying that he put too much emotional weight on a character that was never designed to take it. The article was making the point that the "best" Joker was Cesar Romero, because of his over-the-top scene stealing.

197 Willowed: Saw Joker. Phoenix's performance is phenomenal.

(No spoilers)

I thought it was a very good film, with nicely done shorthand to Scorsese's King of Comedy and Taxi Driver.

With Scorsese in the background, it's hard to know how much of this movie might have been him taking the handlebars, but if it's all Phillips, then the heretofore gross-out-comedy director is really hitting full stride.

I don't think there is anything to fear from this movie, as long as you don't shy away from gritty. I read a quote from Phillips who said that if you can't tell that Joker is the bad guy by the end of the movie, that says something about you.

And the final scene clinches it.

We can feel some amount of sympathy for Arthur through most of the movie. He certainly is a victim through some of it. But as he begins to get what he sees as "control" of his life, he loses us as he cares more about how big an effect he can have.

What I noted at the end of the movie is that while the more comic book-style movies are violating comic traditions all over the place, the gritty and realistic Joker actually resolves itself, rather affirming some comic cannon.

It wasn't just that - the campy version fit the spirit of the mid-1960's perfectly. (The Beverly Hillbillies was still the most popular show on TV) Dark would not have gone over at all. A generation later, silly and goofy wouldn't work, and especially now - our entire world is dark now, and people have a hard time imagining anything else.

I'd rather live back then.

Weird version of Top Gun's Blue tongue scene. (Stallone has a really odd underbite)
Rescues the excuse. Tells the other POWs "come with me". "Naw. We're good here. Let me know if you see Liam Neeson"
And the worse part was during the credits. Stills from First Blood rolled with the credits and reminded everyone (ok, both of us in the theater). how much better the original was.
