35 From all of us who remember the painting of the Nicole Kidman-esque girl seated atop the big pig from some years ago: "Something's missing!"

Still, I like the texture, and the way the pig's ears are sharply canted forward, as if listening to something important.

Looks like Miss Delilah got overtaken in the last weekend of AKC National Owner-Handled competition for the year.

The last few weekends I've had to be the one handling her because Her Majesty is in no condition to go into the ring. I can do a mechanically-adequate job, but I have no great skill and HM must grind her teeth watching me. To her credit, she's pointed out what I need to improve but otherwise has been complimentary.

Saturday's judge was an old stupe and dumped our girl "because her coat felt strange." Idiot. We got to the O-H group on Sunday and got a Group 3, but we needed a Group 1 if not O-H Best in Show and I'm not the guy to do it.

We're very proud of our little girl all the same. She's a sweetie, loves to show and is a real trouper.

118 It was Alan E. Nourse who wrote a short SF story in the Fifties suggesting that our closest animal relative, the one we have a common ancestor with, is . . . the pig. He adds up several details, such as our very close immune and circulatory systems, and certain psychological factors. At the climax he has the unconvinced characters observe newborn humans in a hospital. That is the clincher.

182 I like Jamie Wyeth's paintings, especially the landscapes and animal scenes. There is a richness and level of detail that makes them effective. Also, the color choices are both rich and sometimes glowing. His portraits of people are a bit stiff for my taste and certainly lack the realism of his father's works. They aren't bad, just not as good as his paintings without people. This one really brings out the look and 'mood' I've seen in some pigs: comfortable with a sense of smugness. Odd, but that is what I get from this painting.

I'm glad he follows his own tastes in technique and scenes and doesn't bury himself under his father's or grandfather's styles.

Abandoning the Kurds is getting to be a habit for the US. This makes the third or fourth time in the last 50-60 years. Which is ironic, because out of everyone in the Middle East, only the Israelis and the Kurds are worth a shit. The rest are a bunch of untrustworthy mohammedan savages. Hell, Israel and Kurdistan are pretty much the only areas in the ME where an American can walk the streets without being rigged up like they're assaulting Fallujah.

I don't have a problem with pulling out of the ME entirely, but it pains me that we're starting with the people who've proven that they're actually faithful allies.

If we're going to abandon them again, we should at least give them the weapons with which they can defend themselves. Considering the mountains of money that we've given to "allies" who cheerfully stab us in the back at the drop of a hat, a couple of billion in modern weapons isn't going to make a difference to the US budget, but it'll go a long way towards helping the Kurds survive.

Nation building cannot ever work under the namby-pamby rubric of "tolerance and diversity." The pretense that all cultures are equal is demonstrably false.

Dysfunctional cultures do not build functional nations. The only way to make nation building work is to reform the culture of the nation you're building

We outlawed Nazism, and pursued a vigorous campaign of denazification in Germany. In Japan, we outlawed the practice of their old state religion while they were under military governance.

It takes extreme measures to reconstruct a nation, and the intellectual honesty to objectively assess what's broken in a culture, so that it can be removed or patched.

Very good movie, but hard to discuss in depth without spoilers, s-o-o-o-o-o-o I won't really do that.

Great acting all around. Great directing. Very good script with some nice twists. Excellent soundtrack. A bit of antifaish "eat the rich" that is actually much more subtle than it looks esp if you consider the Joker's final joke at the climax.

Plays like a character driven drama or very very dark comedy, so it's not a "super villain movie" if that's what you're expecting.

Not for those morons or ettes, who must have a feel good movie or a protagonist you like to enjoy a movie or whatever.

The Kurds inhabit a very unfortunate piece of real estate, even worse than the Poles. They're surrounded by powerful enemies on all sides, and we have to go through those enemies just to give them any help at all. To top it off, they have no truly defensible borders. They are very sympathetic allies, but allying with them militarily would mean a Forever War for us, because they're in a Forever War with no way out.

==========

It was not good, though it was almost.

Full thoughts are you know where, but a quick distillation.

The movie's not well directed. It's actually pretty badly directed, and the script takes on too much and does too little with what it has.

The protest stuff is underdeveloped to an extreme. Arthur has a few fantasies and they either get dropped unceremoniously (looking at de Niro as a father figure), ended on sour notes (the girl down the hall, the best of the fantasies in general), or not actually his fantasy (his "true father") so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense why he would go as far as he does.

Scenes feel out of order in the first hour making it an odd experience.

It's the final half of the film, though, that nearly saves it. Once we get Arthur casting off the last of his mental support structures and embracing the psychopath he's always been (hidden by drugs), the movie works better. His ultimate act of violence is tangible and quite great, but the movie's embrace of ambiguity ends up kneecapping it in its final moments.

I wanted to like it more than I did.

An important exception to the general rule, and I've thought on how to put this in words correctly - The ends do justify the means when the survival of those who you are dedicated to protect is at stake. You may make the moral choice to sacrifice your own life, but it is not a moral choice to sacrifice the lives of those who depend on you.

this is the moral mistake Ghandi made in his philosophy.

also, a corollary: for this exception to apply, you must have exhausted all reasonable alternatives first.

The WSJ editorial section has generally been conservative (albeit their GOPe open borders position), while the news section is as liberal as the WaPo or NYT. When Murdoch bought the WSJ from the Bancroft family, there was practically an open revolt in the newsroom about it.

304 An important exception to the general rule, and I've thought on how to put this in words correctly - The ends do justify the means when the survival of those who you are dedicated to protect is at stake.

Posted by: Tom Servo at October 07, 2019 10:26 AM (Kpl3J)

When someone else places you in the position of having to fight for your life (or those of your dependents), it cannot be morally wrong, because you did not choose it. For a decision to be moral, you have to have agency to choose. Your hand was forced by another. There was no choice.

SPOILERY STUFF - Don't read if you want to see "JOKER"

Well, we obviously disagree.

The protest stuff is a good point to talk about though-

that it's minimized is really the point.

It's Arthur's movie, so we're seeing things from his view or as he experiences them.

The clown mask mob is only important(to Arthur) at first because he finds out that he can have a effect in the world.

But, he enjoys it from the outside, it's not really part of him or who he was or what he was doing.

When he tells his final "joke" at the talk show, that is the moment when he fully embraces his psychopathy and philosophy, and the moment -

when his madness and hatred and violence connects with the mob.

Connects with all those sick, angry people out there. He becomes Joker and the mob becomes his avatar.

Even to the point of killing you know who.

As it ends, Joker has found his audience who appreciate his "jokes".

If society does accept his "humor", that's okay cuz they're now the butt of his jokes instead of the other way around.

Islam is dedicated to tearing down our American government and replacing it with sharia law. How any muzzie organization is allowed inside our government remains a mystery to me. The MoBros, CAIR, and all the rest have that goal in their charter, whether officially or not.

And they are pursuing their goals all the time and in every way, be it politically, socially or religiously. It's a war that's being thrust upon us against our will. They could just leave us alone in peace, but their cult tells them not to.

It's the same story every time: control freaks who want to take over the whole world making life miserable for Normals who just want to be left alone.

Yeah, we disagree.

I don't see the protest stuff as important to Arthur's journey at all. It's extra.

Arthur's journey isn't about external acceptance it's about internal realization. It's about him coming out to the world. The world's reaction isn't that important to the story. It's Arthur coming out that's important. I think the movie really should have ended with his moment of public violence.

And, on top of it, the protests aren't really well handled in and of themselves. They start because Thomas Wayne called poor people clowns in an exchange that feels so unbelievable from a guy who's been doing PR as a rich guy for so long and is deciding on a run for mayor of Gotham.

The idea behind the protests isn't bad, but I think it's really poorly done. Their reasoning and explosion aren't as clear as they should be since they're mostly ignored until the halfway point. And Arthur pointedly ignoring them and refusing to accept them (as he does on the show) until the very end undermines the idea that he's looking for their acceptance at all. He gets his small moments like when he growls at the newspaper image, but if he was looking for that kind of mass acceptance, he would have grabbed onto it earlier.

It's...messy.

Surrender is always an option. If not for Churchill, England would have surrendered. And if all 3 carriers had been in Pearl Harbor that day, the US would have had to surrender quite quickly, no matter how much the public disliked it. The French public wasn't happy about surrendering to Germany, but they did it. And this is why I point out Ghandi's error - Ghandi was one who loudly stated that Surrender followed by passive resistance was always the only moral option. He was spectacularly wrong.

384 To understand the "wars" since 9-11 you have to acknowledge that warfare has changed. We are largely fighting enemies who are largely either insurgencies, loosely connected trans national groups and who mostly use asymmetric warfare. You can't bomb them on the battlefield except when they mass, and the mostly don't have cities to bomb. Their objectives are to kill Americans and Westerners, wherever they are and to seize sovereign governments and as one objective, increase their ability to wage war. This is unlike any war we've fought before. It is largely unlike any enemy.

The Bill Clinton School of Disengagement got us the first WTC bombing and 9-11. It caused the unnecessary losses of Task Force Ranger. It seems a lot of people have not only forgotten that, but they've forgotten the lessons since 2001, that I articulated above. We're not fighting "someone else's war". We are fighting battles of necessity that keep our enemies in check.

Well, yeah, the movie is about Arthur's realization of who and what he truly is, but ending the movie on his act of public violence just makes him another nut with a gun. Not the Joker.

He becomes the Joker only when his little act of violence can connect to and destabilize Gotham.

I'm sure the scriptwriter was following the idea behind "The Dark Knight" Joker and his idea of just "giving a little push" and it all comes tumbling down.

He's not looking for acceptance. He's a narcissistic psychopath. He's looking for an audience, which is a very different thing.

At least, we can agree on one thing - the Thomas Wayne speech was clumsy. And in my estimation unnecessary.

427 My experience playing "Axis & Allies" has led me to believe that the most likely path to an Axis victory would have been Japan invading Siberia at the same time as Barbarossa.
---------------------
The Japs had already tangled with Siberian troops. They wanted no part of that. Their problem, ever expanding frontages in China, became Hitler's problem in Russia. Traveling around Ukraine you realize that ground warfare was more like naval combat given the vastness and openess of the terrain. Had the same feeling out in Ft. Carson. You realize a bunch of Indians can just pop up out of nowhere on those praries.

It doesn't matter. What matters is holding them up while declaiming "He only paid x% in taxes!" Analysis? Pfft. What matters is trying to turn him into one of the 1%er scapegoats so they can fundraise off of him and excite their envy-based base to get out and vote.

My experience in Hearts of Iron aligns with that. Japan's best moves are to focus on Northern Expansion after dealing with China. Join AntiComintern but not the Axis, take half of Russia on up to its Central Asian oil fields, and DO NOT get into a war with the US.

Then start seeking to mend fences with the West, hoping that they'll be too busy dealing with Hitler to worry about your sudden neutrality (brought on by the necessity of integrating your huge conquests.)

438 Most people have generally taken the position that
killing over a hundred thousand non-combatant civilians at once is
immoral. I take the position that, because of the ends sought, it was
moral in that particular instance.

Posted by: Tom Servo at October 07, 2019 10:58 AM (Kpl3J)

I've taken the position for 50 years that it was MROE moral to kill a hundred thousand than it was to kill ALL of them. Because that's what an invasion of the home islands would have had to accomplish: killing every last man and woman, and likely all the children would have died, too.

(Ever been to Saipan? The signs at the cliffs where all the Japanese women and children leapt to their deaths - the ones in Japanese, anyway - *still* read as if it was truth that the Americans would eat all the children and rape all the women, and suicide was the only honorable out for those folks.)

439 Joker is phenomenal on so many different levels, raw film making, cinematography, story and acting by both Joaquin Phoneix, who should win the Oscar going away, and also the supporting actors.

There are some elements of the story that reminded me of Jacobs ladder and the Thin Red Line.

I would highly recommend everyone see it in a theater and soon before it gets spoiled by people revealing it.

442 Saw "Joker" -
---
So did I. Phoenix's performance is phenomenal.

(No spoilers)

I thought it was a very good film, with nicely done shorthand to Scorsese's King of Comedy and Taxi Driver.

With Scorsese in the background, it's hard to know how much of this movie might have been him taking the handlebars, but if it's all Phillips, then the heretofore gross-out-comedy director is really hitting full stride.

I don't think there is anything to fear from this movie, as long as you don't shy away from gritty. I read a quote from Phillips who said that if you can't tell that Joker is the bad guy by the end of the movie, that says something about you.

And the final scene clinches it.

We can feel some amount of sympathy for Arthur through most of the movie. He certainly is a victim through some of it. But as he begins to get what he sees as "control" of his life, he loses us as he cares more about how big an effect he can have.

What I noted at the end of the movie is that while the more comic book-style movies are violating comic traditions all over the place, the gritty and realistic Joker actually resolves itself, rather affirming some comic cannon.
