Gun Thread: Maybe You Just Suck [Weasel]

demotivator scaled.jpg

Something has been on my mind for a while and I think it's time we talked about it. What is it you ask? Well, it mostly has to do with training, expectations and improving your shooting. Let's find out more below, shall we?

Shooting, Sucking and You

Here's a wisdom packed short article sent in by our pal redc1c4 touching on a topic I've felt strongly about for some time. If you aren't getting the results you want in your shooting, or anything else in life for that matter, perhaps the first thing to do is just admit that you suck. I mean this sincerely. On a good day I am a half-way competent shooter, but I sure as hell didn't start out that way. When I first started, I sucked, bigly, boldly and badly. After making a lot of random holes in targets at embarrassingly close distances, I sat down and had a talk with myself and we both agreed that I just sucked at shooting. It turns out that shooting, at least shooting consistently well, is one of those things that is harder than it looks. But what to do about it? Should I simply lower my expectations or should I decide to improve? How about being happy with the status quo?

Just because you suck today doesn't mean you have to suck forever, and improving mostly involves starting with good fundamentals rather than spending a fortune on gear.

It's important to set your expectations and work towards the standard you set for yourself as a goal. I went along for a while and then decided to try and stop sucking by developing some skills which meant a) training and 2) practice, practice, practice. I joined a range and spent an hour or two there every week over a number of years practicing the fundamentals of handgun shooting. Rifle shooting represented a different sickness altogether; I found one of best rifle instructors in the country and spent a countless number of days on a 600 acre hay farm learning to shoot at long-range. Later, I entered as many long range matches as possible over a period of years to practice what I'd learned. Beginning to get the point? It's much more about learning the fundamentals and practicing them, than it is about having the newest, shiniest and expensivest gear on the range. I have had my ass absolutely kicked around a rifle range by old experienced guys and gals with goofy looking vintage gear, because they knew how to shoot. Having ultra high-end equipment only begins to make a difference at the very top end of the performance curve.

When I began coaching long-range rifle teams I frequently worked with new shooters and noticed a tendency for many to believe a new scope or another piece of gear was the quick answer to whatever their problemo du jour seemed to be. They were convinced that moving from a basic stock rifle to a very expensive custom made rifle would place them squarely in the winner's circle on match day. BAM! Imagine their confusion and bitter, bitter sadness when the big day arrives and their brand new rifle doesn't seem to shoot any better than the previous one they were convinced had been holding them back all along. Hey! This new rifle is defective too!

So here are some WeaselRules on shooting, training and practice. These are good not only for new shooters, but also maybe for those who have reached a plateau and are looking to up their game. These are the same points I would gently, and sometimes not so gently, make to the dejected shooter toeing the dirt after a train wreck in a match, but they apply to all shooters sooner or later I think.

Don't Read the Internet
The internet is great for cat videos, exiled Nigerian banking official outreach, and our favorite blog, but can be a dangerous place for anyone with just a little bit of knowledge. It's natural for a new shooter to want to immerse themselves in their latest passion, but it's possible to pick up someone else's bad habits, too. Be very careful what and who you believe online, especially anything from a guy you don't know calling himself Weasel. The best way to begin gaining knowledge you can trust is to find someone who does the kind of shooting you like, and who does it very well, and become their best friend.

Talk Less and Listen More
If you are being coached or are paying for lessons, listen to the instructor and refrain from explaining to them how much of an expert you already are. Shooters are a friendly bunch so if you're learning on your own, find the good shooters, ask questions and listen to the answers. Again, listening does not mean blabbering about how much you know from reading an internet discussion forum the night before.

Set Goals, Measure Progress and Manage Expectations
Always have a plan. Even if you're headed to the range for some plain ol' recreational shooting, have some sort of training objective in mind. You don't need to make a big production out of things, but take the time to focus on fundamentals or one particular aspect of shooting for at least a few minutes. Be willing to invest your time but spend it wisely and adopt some method of measuring your progress. Finally, do not become discouraged when you don't become a champion overnight. It takes time, and there's nothing you can do about that other than, well, investing an amount of time directly proportional to the skill level you want to achieve. There is nothing in the world wrong with being new at something and sucking at it, just be determined to improve if that's what you want to do. If your goal is to shoot six inch groups at 7 yards, then be happy shooting six inch groups at 7 yards.

Everyone Has a Bad Day
No shit. And I mean everyone. Don't compound a problem you might have had earlier by acting like a baby and beating yourself up for the rest of the day. I like to tell the story of a very good friend who is one of the top long range shooters in the country who, in the first three relays of a national match, dropped a total of three points and was in 54th place at the end of day one. Did he get mad and quit? No. That day simply wasn't his day. If you make an errant shot, stop and think about what happened. Try to determine what went wrong and don't do that thing anymore. Have a mental checklist beginnning with your setup, stance and grip mechanics; and progressing through target acquisition, trigger squeeze and follow-up, and assess your performance at each step. There is a time to shoot quickly and a time to shoot s-l-o-w-l-y. Learn from your mistakes and when it's your turn to be the loser, don't be a bad one.

Consider Competitive Shooting for Practice
I am a lazy mo-fo, no two ways about it. After I had been shooting and training for a while, I got to a point where I was excusing my often less than stellar performance as good enough. I'd just barely miss a target at say, 800 yards, and would make up all sorts of reasons to myself why it was justified and understandable. After all, it's a teensy little target a long way away! I was definitely at the point where I'd accomplished my goal of learning how to shoot and was then just being lazy in the execution. So I decided to start entering matches knowing that I could measure good days vs bad ones by my scores, and it worked. You cannot hide from a poorly executed shot when the target comes up and your scorer records the results. You do not have to go all bananas and turn it into a semi-career like I did, but consider match shooting as a training tool. It is a whole lot of fun and you will meet some incredibly nice and like-minded people along the way. You won't know what you're doing the first time, but just suck it up. Every single person on the range had a first day, too. Tell the Match Director it's your first match and ask to be squadded with an experienced shooter who can show you the ropes, then come back and tell me at the end of the day it wasn't fun and worthwhile.

Sorry, It Probably Isn't the Gun
Self-explanatory. 'Nuff said.

***

So what do you think? Do you need more practice or do you "need" a new gun or some other gear to improve? Believe me, buying guns is mucho fun-o especially if your objective is owning lots of guns, but if you want to progress with your shooting it takes time, a willingness to learn, and practice. Admitting there is always something to work on is the first step towards being a more consistent shooter. Learn how to shoot before you start throwing new and fancier gear at the problem, and for Pete's sake, always remember it's supposed to be fun!

Last week in the comments our pal freaked mentioned he had a long gun he wanted to ID and here 'tis:

Maybe the horde can help me identify this rifle I inherited from my Grandfather who lived in Frederick Md and was originally from that area. It looks like it might have started off as a flintlock and was converted to cap, and it might have said “Baltimore” at one time. I have examined it with a magnifying glass but you can’t really see any more than what is in the pictures. That area is worn smooth.

Man, is that cooler than shit, or what? C'mon guys - help a brother out and help identify the rifle!

Maybe analogous: Her Majesty says about breeding and showing dogs that you can have 40 years of experience or one year of experience 40 times.

In my 25 years in the sport I have found that the capacity people have for self-delusion is almost infinite.

18 AltonJackson and I were at the indoor range at Huron Valley Guns yesterday and shot a few informal videos at the 7yd pistol range. I am not in any way an expert on pistol shooting technique, but after watching the videos, I immediately caught a few habits and tics that I have that are certainly not doing me any favors.

If you have a range that allows it, and you're not recording anyone who would rather not be recorded, setting up a phone or video camera on a tripod and watching yourself go through a few magazines could help you identify some things to work on.

i concur: breaking bad habits starts with identifying them.

and when you do, break yourself of them one at a time, unless they are *directly* related.

don't be like the newbie "coach" i had at an Appleseed event: i was ill that day, and had the shakes too (from my then undiagnosed hyperthyroidism) and was shooting like shit.

rather than address one issue at a time, he kept listing them all,one after another, to the point where i said the magic words and sat under the pop up for the rest of the day.

don't be that guy. i don't blame Appleseed, because it's a great program, but some people have no idea how to teach/coach.

No range time this past week but going on Tuesday - taking two inexperienced gals. The are looking to get their concealed carry license eventually and need to get a bit of familiarity before taking the basic classes.

34 Want to really be humbled? Have guys shooting peep sights out shoot you and you're using a scope.

We have guys at our 200 yard high power matches who hit the x-ring with boring regularity using just iron sights.

The range where I shoot has a steel gong at 300 yards. When I shoot the M1, I try to see how many times I can hit the thing in a row. Usually, when trying for the gong, I shoot kneeling.

There's also a good size steel target at 175 yards that I tend to start with before moving out to 300 yards.

Not that you should listen to a rando on the internet but you might also look at your regular meds to see if any of those cause tremor & discuss with your PHCP modifying when they are taken on the days you go shoot. If it's been a while since they checked your thyroid panel it might be worth looking at it again. The tremor shouldn't interfere with your life.

40 Unless you are a competitive shooter, being tore up cause you can't do 3"-4" groups is a bit dumb in my view.

Also all this prep and what you want to accomplish and stuff is bit much and makes the trip to the range more like work.

Me I'm satisfied if I can get all the holes in a group that would be within a target shaped like a human torso. That's all you need for defense. If you want to gain more control or see where you tend to shoot, Use some cardboard circles about 9-12" and use them for a target rather than hang a big 2'x2' paper target up there. Then you can easily take them down when done and compare between sessions.

Me it's the manual of arms for a particular weapon that is more important than most of the rest of the stuff.

Know your firearm. Rent different stuff from what you own so you can see if you could do better than what you've got.

And btw, sometimes it IS a new grip, a new set of sights or scope or even a different weapon.

Make it mostly fun and you'll go more often. If you're serious then that's okay but most of us don't have the money or the time. I tend to do what's fun rather than work when it's a recreational thing mostly.

And if it's only self defense then buy a shotgun cause that will do the job much better close quarters than even a hand gun.

Just sayin'

64 I always believe you have room to improve.

The fun is when you go to the range and it all goes south but you push through and right the ship. Broken firing pin, learn to swap it out. Bad ammo going click....bang.....hold steady on target. Ejector pin falls out, pop it back in. Magazine spring dies, feed one round at a time. Squib stuck in the barrel, get out the hammer and rod. It's all fun and good training.

This week I took the old Nagant revolver to the range. If you can shoot the Nagant, you can shoot any hand gun. Wore a blister on my finger just unloading and reloading the old beast. Good shooter, but Lord it makes you work. The trigger in double action is a nightmare but it keeps you focused.

67 There's a import co. SDS Imports that is selling a few models of magazine fed shot guns at a price very competitive with the name brands.

There one that is Turkish made that has a spring assist for the slide.

Magazines are 5 round and I believe they can use Saiga magazines so you can have 10 or 15.

No pistol grip on stock or slide.

That's my immediate buy before any new law goes into effect if they enact some dumb law and it looks like to be a pain or a ghost registration scheme.

alas, by the time we got done shooting, both the restaurant & the barber shop were closed

yes, having video of yourself shooting is a huge help

The range at Huron Valley Guns kicks eleven flavors of ass. The programmable target controllers were excellent, I hadn't shot on that kind of set up for a very long time (I usually shoot at the state parks outdoor ranges).

Got some good work in on acquisition & double tap (kind of slo-mo double tap, the range rule was 1 second between shots); one hand, off hand.

the 1911 is challenging to shoot left handed, especially mag changes

cranked off some +P through my Ruger Speed Six as the "change of pace" gun; I shot the revolver semi-surprisingly well off-hand

78 I also forget that many other states require testing and grading in a school like setting to qualify for a carry license.

My bad. I could wish we had a bit more stringency for our carry license in PA but not to the extent and expense of some other states.

Still it's an artifact of the way they drew up the definitions of a firearm and where and when you can transport it. Probably due to the numbers of hunters we get every year from the East Coast.

Just to transport a firearm in a vehicle requires that you have a carry license for FIREARMS as defined. But NO ONE can carry a loaded long arm. I'm assuming that's so you don't have guys shooting from the road.

87 Sra blaster and I went to the NRA range today.

We took our Sigs. My new to me 226 and mamas 365.

First time with the 226. I would describe it as a precision blunt instrument. It works. I am capable of some good shots with it but I admit it I suck. I am not a consistent shooter. Need more time at the range.

The functions are similar to my Ruger P95 DC. SA/DA with a decocker. But the controls are in different places took me a bit to get familiar. The slide lock is tough for me to engage with my thumb. I like the SA trigger feel a LOT. The DA is not bad. Better than the P95.

The 365 is still a champ. DAO of course.

Took inventory of the locker this week. 650 rds each of 9 and 5.56. 1400 of 22LR. Assorted 12 ga.

Among the 9 mm were 250 of Tula steel case. We took 3 boxes of that crap to the range to get it out of inventory. It is crap. Had 3 FTFs. 2 in the 226. I figured it would eat anything. Apparently not that Tula crap.

111 My dear old dad had a kick for russki small arms. The first rifle I ever fired was a New England Westinghouse M1891. From the bench it knocked me off the stool. I laughed as my seven year old ass hit the deck; been shooting ever since.

At a gunshow he picked up a load of 7.62x54R APIT, Soviet stuff. Headstampted 1928. Corrosive as all get out, so much gun scrubbing afterwards. It all fired, but after a pronounced delay. Squeeze, click, wait, boom. About a one second hang fire, but it taught us about follow through.

As kids it was fun to shoot, as we aimed at the steel target supports from 100 yards. That stuff blew right through the metal. The tracer compound didn't work after all the years, but the incindiary sure did, and started a few small blazes. Good times.

113 Last week my Mauser C96 finally returned from the shop with is new barrel insert. I spent a couple of days just using my bore light and savoring the look of actual *rifling* in the pistol.

Today I went to the Moron Lake range and decided to have an impromptu competition between it and the Webley Mk VI to see which was more accurate.

Things started well as I familiarized myself with its grips and sight picture and then it was gone.
The rear sights were gone.

I looked around and found them on the ground behind me. I set them back where they were supposed to go and noticed the spring was missing. I found that ten feet farther back.

I put it all back together and fired a test shot, then another and this time I was able to recognize the smack of the rear sights hitting the top of my hat.

I found them, set them in the case, and eventually found the spring. In the mean time I shot using the space where the rear sight *used to be* and was reasonably accurate.

My theory is that all the CLP I've put on it has loosened up the crust and gunk holding the sights in place. I shall scrub that portion down and see if I can get a replacement spring.

125 Okay, here is a lot of guess work partly based on impressions. The muzzleloader is probably rifled since smoothbores were seldom guven octagon barrels. It may well be custom made as the wood appears to be good quality and if the brass side plate is original (I can't tell) it is a bit fancier than the simple washer needed to retain the lock screw. The crescent butt points toward early-ish 1800s or later. Butt stocks in the mid to late 1700s tended to be flat. The lock appearers to me to be a retro fitted flintlock converted to percussion, a common practice. The bolster holding the nipple doesn't seem to match the age of the other metal. I can't tell if it was full stock originally because the nose cap looks to fit very well.

I'll guess it was made as a flintlock for an individual in the early 1800s later converted to percussion. Best guess.

128 Weasel,

A while back, you recommended a specfic book, I think on ballistics. Can you please repeat that?

Also, a question about using Templilaq for annealing. I'm assuming (there's that word again) you paint it on the inside of the case neck because putting it on the outside would expose it to the direct flame of the torch. So once you've annealed, do you do something to clean it out of the neck or does seating the bullet just scape it off?

131 Speaking of things that go snuffle snort in the woods, there was a Yuge moose trotting around on I-93 south of Franconia NH yesterday morning. The few cars on the road had their blinkers on and everyone slowed down to look. I was maybe 20 feet away when I creeped by him. His legs had to be 5 feet and he had a huge rack.
He was a little put off by the gawkers so I didn't stop to get a pic. I should have.

139 O - kay, back with an Original Leinenkugel ... they make so many special ones these days, it's king of hard to find a plain ol' Leinie these days.

Range Report:
Been loading Hornady Critical Defense 115 gr FTX in the Sig P290 for a while now, pretty much since I segued into that as a summertime concealed piece ... it was okay on the range, the holes it made in paper seemed bigger than those made by the Fiocchi 130 FMJ that I shoot as target ammo.
Was shopping the local gun store for .38 for the j-frame which will be returning to carry soon, and the nice man behind the counter dragged up a box of everything they had, among which was Hornady Critical Defense 119 gr FTX, non +P, which was just what I was looking for.
+P out of an airweight snubby is a bit bouncy and I found it degrading my not-all-that-great performance to a noticeable degree.
This was a bit blasty / flashy out of the short barrel, but not to the point of really impairing 2nd shot time / accuracy, and I noticed the same weird effect of the paper holes seeming larger.
Are they making such extreme hollowpoints these days that they actually expand before impact, or am I just seeing things ?

Overall, good; at 21 feet w/ the 9mm & .38, mostly 9 ring, a few fliers out to 8 (one handed, at eye level) ... my big struggle is to keep the mini .22 in the useful zone at more than tabletop distance, without going full 2-hand Weaver with full careful aim, but here maybe I am asking a lot from a marginal platform.

140 This was for finding and copying hallmarks in silver from the UK Antiques Roadshow although I can't recall how badly disfigured the stamp was but use a candle flame to stain the surface with soot, then use a piece of transparent (I assume) tape and apply it over the blackened surface, peel it off and stick it onto a piece of white paper.

I just found this advice at an antiques chatboard:

Try this hint. Take a burning candle and put it close to the hallmarks so the black soot covers it. Blow out the candle and set side. Take a piece of clear or frosted cellophane tape and cover the hall marks and push down firmly. Lift the tape and place on a white piece of paper (I use note cards) so when it is Id'd I can write on the back. The marks show up under the tape. I learned this from the conservators at the MET in NYC. Besure to wash the soot off. Then you can scan the card and the hallmarks will really stand out. 180 I agree with Weasel's approach to improving shooting. He didn't say becoming the best, just getting better to suit yourself. That's where the regular practice comes in. Trigger control, consistent grip, breathing properly, all contribute technique that lets the shooter make use of 'better' gear. Until the technique is comfortable and accustomed, newer guns and scopes won't help.

And this applies to other activities. I want to learn to draw and paint in retirement. I have no particular talent but I'm doing it for my own (and Mrs. JTB's) amusement. The same approach of regular practice makes the difference. So for now I stick with good pencils and other simple items to learn with.

Any of us who learned guitar as teenagers and played in public did the same thing.

Self-explanatory. 'Nuff said.

Truth.

I am always very slow / reluctant to start making adjustments to the rifle when the rifle isn't hitting what I'm aiming at.

Slow as in several range session before I tweak anything. If the rifle is "off", it'll be consistently off; all the "bad" shots should be roughly grouped together.

My first inclination is not to measure minutes of angle, rather Minutes of Alton. It's not always me, 'cept for the times when it is me.

Note that the M1907 isn't a needle-gun, the company bought the name as a marketing ploy. It's a weird knock-off of a Browning 1900.

I get a good laugh at the tv and radio ads that say, "Some experts expect silver to double in price by the end of the year!" And they run those ads year-round, probably even on New Year's Eve.

I used those ads earlier this year to pull a joke on my financial advisor. He was explaining a new IRA investment option he was recommending, when I interrupted him and I asked why he didn't have some of my IRA in silver. I said I'd heard a radio ad yesterday about silver doubling in value by December. He started frowning more and more as I rambled on, and then I said "Gotcha!" He laughed and said I had gotten him. Best practical joke I've pulled-off in years.

It seems every day there's a good battle occurring in some interwebz gun forum about the proper historical finish, or the best re-finish finish, for Garand and M1 Carbine stocks: Raw linseed oil vs. boiled linseed oil vs. tung oil.

Posted by: Gref at September 15, 2019 09:13 PM (AMIL/)

242 I've been a serious shooter since age 13, when fate and friendship arranged so that I could shoot with the San Diego County Marshall's Department (since absorbed by the S.D. Sheriff's Department), on a regular basis.

I've received a huge amount of highly competent instruction, Military and Civilian, as I've been blessed to have been taught by qualified professionals, vs. Bubba the Blowhard.

They're all masters of The Basics, and will always "go there" to bring an errant shooter back to Square One if need be.

Now, if in professional sports, Spring Training is a thing, and guess what? First week or so is ALWAYS a "back to Square One" drill, just to re-establish the basics, muscle memories and skills.

If it's good enough for the Pros... why don't we also take a range session or three per year, and PRACTICE the basics, the very fundamentals, from Square One?

I'll tell why, and it's been mentioned in tangential form by several, above. But here it is, in the distilled essence.

BECAUSE WE SUCK AT SELF COACHING.

Most of us do, myself included.

I'm at a point in my life, that with a pistol, I very seldom need a "Come to Jesus" moment in my habits and drills.

But I'd likely embarrass myself at an Appleseed rifle weekend, right now. UNLESS I spent a day at the range before hand, doing the basics and DRILLING HARD at those disciplines.

Treat yourself to a Qualified Instructor / Coach, once every year or so. Even if you're doing things 100% right, it's good to hear that from a Pro.

Oh, and avoid too much coffee before shooting hours. *shakes* And do eat a healthy serving of Humble Pie, with your one cuppa morning joe.

And finally, ENJOY! Time at the range IS better than time at work!

243 I agree with JTB, but from the stock details, it is more of a KY or PA flintlock type of stock. It is not the shape of a percussion era stock which tended to be straighter and sturdier, since they had more kick.

I would like a better view of the lock plate to look for the pattern of holes showing the original frizzen and pan were removed, and a close look at the cock since those tend to change according to style. That one has the extra lug on the nose which I think is diagnostic of something, but I can't remember, but the cock itself is pure American.

I wonder if the lettering is for Baltimore, which had a large gunsmithing industry.

The slow motion video shows gas exiting the muzzle prior to the projectile, settling a question from some threads ago.

286 Thanks for another great post Weasel. Read most of the comments but no, I haven't been to the range lately as I have some issues that make it medically imprudent to shoot right now. Did win an auction for a complete lock on a Springfield Trapdoor that I am restoring so yay.

287 263 ... "The lock plate is pinned or riveted on. I'm not sure how you would get it off without removing the heads."

freaked, The lock plate should be screwed on. The brass shield opposite the lock holds what looks like a screw that should go into threads in the lock plate. A simple pin, like those that hold the barrel to the stock, wouldn't reliably keep the lock in place. Unless there is a pressing need to remove the lock, just leave it. That screw helps to stabilize the wood in that area.

If it's just a display piece, probably the safest option, simply wipe it down to get dust and the worst of the grime off. I use Renaissance Wax on my muzzleloaders, metal and wood, to protect them.

290 I will always think of Ric Ocasek as a punk rocker - damn he was 75 years old.

Reminds of that article a couple days ago, all of the musicians we've listened for most of our lives are going to die over the next 10 years. Time's running out.

293 Weasel, Before the ONT comes along, here's another thank you for the gun thread. Besides the philosophy in the post, it was fun trying to puzzle out freaked's old rifle. Both aspects forced me to think.

298 "Unless there is a pressing need to remove the lock"

Only curiosity to see what's in there. That usually leads to trouble.

299 I have always considered The Cars eponymous first album to be one of the best Albums ever produced, by any band. Not only is every song quite good, but they all roll into each other, one after the other, and the 2nd side of that album plays like one extended piece of music with 4 main themes, rather than 4 separate songs. It was masterfully done, one of the albums that makes me lament the death of Album Rock today.

300 Just because you suck today doesn't mean you have to suck forever, and improving mostly involves starting with good fundamentals rather than spending a fortune on gear.
This could also be changed into a golf blog article. A lot of people believe they can buy a game and/or become great just by practicing more. Of course anyone can improve if they work hard and train correctly But you are right to mention sucking. This is not to discourage anyone, but to give people a dose or reality.

There are some activities that most people think can be mastered by technology or effort. Golf has to be at the top of that list. Rare is the serious golfer who doesn't believe in the back of his mind that he could be great if he only had the time, money, instruction, and equipment. However, few delude themselves to believe they could become an elite point guard if they just worked harder and had some instruction.

I think it is pretty clear why some would think they could become great at activities/sports that are not so obvious about the need for talent. Lots of out of shape guys can go to the shooting range or golf range. Few are going to run a marathon.

To be clear, I am not saying people can not improve. In fact I am saying the opposite. People can improve as the diarist is saying. But for whatever reason, expectations of great improvement or mastery are inflated in sports such as shooting, golf, and other activities that seem within reach to the regular Joe. But in reality, talent will always separate the elite from the regular guy. The chances of becoming a world class bowler or dartist are not any better than becoming a world class hockey goalie.

But anyone can improve if they go about things the right way.

304 I went on a boy scout range yesterday with my son and about 10 other scouts and I had a chance to shoot down range and did better than my norm. After look and reading the post I thought about what I was doing yesterday that made me a better shot.

We all had one bullet at the target at 25 feet to make sure of the sighting. 5 shots at 25 feet for precision and then 5 groups of 5 at 50 feet.

My best group of 5 was the 2nd and third grouping putting 4 shots in a quarter sized area and then 3 shots in the quarter area. ( the rest were well placed but this was my best.). I think the thing that helped me the most was the fact the instructor made us take our time between shots. I was much more patient than usual.

305 If it is a converted flint, there should be holes for the frizzen spring under what is now the bolster area. I don't see any, open or filled. The bottom word was "warranted" I think. Also, the frizzen spring would have covered the area where the engraving is.

I would guess that this was always a percussion - It might be a late flint with the stock cut back, but I think that the most likely answer is that it dates to around 1840-50 period.

Get some better pictures of it and take it to the guys at American Longrifles, under Antique Gun Collecting. Best place on the 'net for old American muzzleloaders.

Also had long gun in case intended bear did get found.
