73 That deaf convention joke panel brings back a similar memory.

When I lived in the Bay Area, my girlfriend had a gay male friend who lived in San Francisco and was a sugar daddy to a much younger, deaf man.

We'd been invited over to a big party in their large back yard to celebrate the deaf guy's graduation from graduate school, and I was really annoyed because -- owing to bad traffic -- we were quite late (I hate being late). As we approached the front door I said "Well, I don't hear anything ... it sounds like we might be the first ones to have arrived."

After walking through the house to the back yard, we saw probably 100 people and it was complete silence. They were ALL deaf and signing to one another. We were the only non-deaf invitees.

One of the coolest things was something I'd never seen before: a deaf-and-blind guy's hands cupped around another person signing -- so he could feel the sign language. Really cool ...

143 These lawsuits like the Supermac thing you mention often go badly
for the big corporation. The two that come to mind for me are actually
pretty interesting, at least to me.
The first
one was when Hershey Chocolate Company went after the Hershey Creamery
(the ice cream maker) over trademarks of course. It turns out that the
Hershey Ice Cream company has nothing to do with Hershey chocolate.
The companies just happen to have been created in the same town, by guys
with the same last name, around the same year. The result of many
decades of legal battles, the Hershey Creamery has to put a disclaimer
that they are not affiliated with the Hershey Company on their ice cream
packages. It is like a warning label no one notices. My guess is most
think they are produced by the same business. Both products are good
imo.

Another interesting one was when
Whataburger of Texas went after What-A-Burger of Southern Virgina. The
Virginia What-A-Burger is a very small regional chain of a few stores.
It turns out that both companies started in the 1950s and didn't even
know about each other until the 1970s. There was a a long detente but
there was a patent infringement case in in the 2000s. The end result
is no damages, and Whataburger said they are not coming to Virginia.
Sorry Texans.

* I could have some of the details wrong as these are complicated issues but the gist is correct I think.

145 What makes you think you're not dreaming right now?

There was a span of time many years ago when I couldn't tell the difference between dreams and reality. I was working 80 hour weeks so my dreams were simply continuations of my work day. In a dream I would finish a project or report and have delivered it or have notified the customer. In the real world, I would discover that wasn't so.

But a real easy way to tell that dreams are not reality is that in my dreams I never get tired, taste, aware of temperature, or orientation, or have a sense of time.

He said it was one of the first gubs he bought when he opened his shop about ten years ago and his father bought it. Later his dad sold it to another guy who brought it in to sell last week. It's an A1 model based on the WWII era version and in great shape. Centurion brand, and I figure since it has been under a gunsmith's purview since new, should be good. 164 I think I ate at a Red Lobster once in my life.

Not trying to sound snooty, but I've spent most of my time near the wet edges of the country, so there's always been some local seafood joint -- or in some cases a whole row of them right on the water.

When I'm in New England I get lobster, or clams, or chowder, or fried cod and chips. If I'm near Chesapeake Bay I get crabcakes. If I'm on the Gulf it's shrimp, crawfish, crab, oysters, or whatever.

But if I'm not in a state with a coast, I don't get seafood. I get barbecue, or chicken-fried steak, or fresh corn on the cob, or chili, or Amish breakfast.

It's like going to McDonalds's instead of the local diner. Why?

Reeses was a huge success and competitor to Hershey for decades. Finally Hershey merged with Reeses and they are still part of the same company today. But it is interesting both companies, two of the most iconic candy brands in the world, came out of the same town.

Also never had an incident of multiple claims at the same time which would be indicative of a common bulk item served, ie; biscuits, tartar sauce, etc.

My grandparents managed Motel 6's as a semi-retirement gig after Grandpa left Boeing. It damn near killed them. But, kind of like Walmart, not every Motel 6 is like another. Very, very dependent on the neighborhood in which it's located.

Still, me and the missus get great rooms via Priceline and whatnot. So we have not been in a Motel 6 for some time.

343 worst hotel ever I stayed in was some interstate place near Mammoth cave in Kentucky, there was a family reunion, we thought we would stay elsewhere and at the last minute had to stay at this wretched hive of scum and villainy. The 30 kids in the pool about 10 feet outside our window screaming until 1 am would have been bad enough; but there was a heat wave on, it was about 95 at 4 am, and the room air conditioner was broken. I remember getting out of bed at about 3 or 4 in the morning and laying on the dirty floor in front of that window unit AC, you could just barely feel a faint little breath of air coming out of it. But it was a mockery, because it got you to hope you'd feel some cool air but you never actually would. By 5 am, even though we had no sleep, we got up, put our crap in the car and headed for Texas, because a 12 hour drive after no sleep at all was still a hell of a lot better option than staying in that torture chamber for 5 more minutes.

and then about 3 hours later we stopped at a gas station and my wife went into the grimy bathroom in back and the lights didn't work, and as she was looking for the light switch (which turned out to be broken) the door slammed shut and then the inside doorknob fell off and I didn't hear her yelling til after I finished filling up the car.

that was a hell of a vacation.

and then there are things like the famous Jimmie Davis bridge, in southern Shreveport, across the Red River. Shreveport and Bossier City have finally grown enough that today, it is an important thoroughfare. You've got to understand that it is a HUGE bridge, 4 lanes, across a BIG river,a hugely expensive project when it was built in the 60's. And at the time all it connected was some cotton fields on one side of the river to some cotton fields on the other side of the river. Why did it get built?

Turns out the Governor and his business partners owned a lot of those cotton fields on both sides. What an amazing coincidence.

AOP, talked with a former Swedish fighter pilot a few years back, now an instructor for Emirates, he confirmed he'd done a lot of landings/take-offs on highways. The original Interstate system had a requirement for X mileage of straight/level every Y miles, or something, I think. For the reason you'd think.

Lots of war-fighting features built into American infrastructure in the 5Os/6Os, with federal requirements and $$.

Ask someone about those windowless, bunker-like AT and T buildings [called central offices], see if anyone has an idea why they might be built that way. I believe their over-pressure resistance is significantly higher than standard commercial buildings of the same type, too.

Russell Long, when he was chairman of Senate Finance, would begin big hearings with a story, often an "Uncle Earl" story. [Earl, his uncle, and Huey "Kingfish" Long's younger brother - Huey was Russell's dad]

One was about the time, early in one of Earl's gubernatorial terms, when he [Russell] went to him to tell him the groups of farmers and others, who had camped out in the capital to demand fulfillment of campaign promises, were not going home and were demanding answers.

"Uncle Earl, what am I gonna tell 'em?" [in Russell's high-pitched voice with the distinctive accent]

"Russell," Governor Earl replied, "tell 'em I LIED!"

There are entire ghost cities in China, built for much the same reason (political corruption). They were built to withstand pretty much anything since the network switches are housed there. You lose the switches, no phones, no internet, no lots of other shit.

BTW, it's very rare that your long distance call will go point to point. The network searches out the first open channel in microseconds, and your NYC to Miami call might first go to Phoenix, Kansas City, Louisville, whatever has that first open channel.

It can slow things down if even one switch goes down. Happened in Sherman Oaks with the Northridge Quake, when the building was fine but the battery reserves ran low and the switch had to be shut down. Happened in downtown Manhattan on 9-11

430 > Curiously, what I recall about the worst motel I ever stayed in is the fact that I had to pay a key deposit.

Hotel guests are notorious about not returning keys. The smallish one I worked in (mumble) years ago had the tools and sets of pins to rekey the locks as needed. If the owner didn't have the ability to do that himself, I can see locksmith expenses being a substantial line item back in the day.

Nowadays it's all key cards, even in fleabag hotels, so the problem doesn't exist any more.

452 I think the weirdest, if not the worst motel room we stayed in was in Wenatchee, Washington. It was a corner room, ground level, three (3) king size beds. The room was yuge, the bathroom was down a corridor.

I called it the Prom Night Special. We stripped one of the beds and slept in our sleeping bags.

456 i stayed in some rathole on my way to Austin once. On the 71. don't remember the name but i remember it was cheap.

It gave me a staph thing on a shoulder and I needed antibiotics to rid me of it.

The reason why I have in the car a Go-Bag that includes a sleep sack. Once went to Indy from Austin immediately after working a 12 hour day. Saw strange creatures jumping on the hood while speeding along the interstate outside of Little Rock - figured it was time to pull over and get some sleep.

The only available place nearby was something similar to what you described. hanged an overnight bag from the ceiling so bed bugs couldn't get in it, and slept in the sack - disposing it when checking out.

May be overkill, but the alternative would be much worse.

465 I think the weirdest, if not the worst motel room we stayed in was in Wenatchee, Washington. It was a corner room, ground level, three (3) king size beds. The room was yuge, the bathroom was down a corridor.

Kabul, in a drug dealer's house a few blocks away from the Palace. My room was on the top floor furthest away from the diesel generator but within 50 feet of a mosque just on the other side of the property's 20 foot high surrounding wall.

Got to listen to the call to morning prayers at full volume over the loudspeaker aimed in my room's general direction. Had a nice advantage point to see the smoked from the occasional bombing near embassy row.

I liked the bathroom best. It was a 14'x14' room with the commode in one corner, the sink in the opposite corner, and a shower head placed along the wall 2' directly above the 220V electrical outlet that the hot water heater was plugged in to. Nothing like standing in an inch or two of poorly drained water staring at point blank range to enough electricity to kill in an instant.

I am thankful for building codes now.

I remember being in Costa Rica, and using shower-head heater (made in Brazil) that plugged into a wall outlet. No switch; it just passed current through the water to heat it. Low flow rate: hot water. Higher flow rate, not so hot. Not really a shock hazard, since the shortest path to ground is within the unit itself. Now, I guess things could get scary if your shower was plumbed with PVC pipe, and the neutral wire went open in the outlet feeding the heater.

474 Creepiest motel hotel I ever stayed at was somewhere in New Hampshire, maybe 20-30 miles from Mt Washington. It looked like a bed and breakfast. When I walked in there was like some kind of sitting room, and 2 pretty old dudes were playing checkers. They both at the same time slowly raised their heads and turned to look at me, then again in unison went back to looking at the checker board. I get to the desk and have to ring a bell. A petite old woman comes out from the back, takes the info and the payment. The place is like a tomb, no noise of any kind. I ask if there were any other guests. She says something like not tonight, and hands me a frigging ancient looking skeleton key for the room, and then vanishes back from where ever she came from. I look at the wife (girlfriend at the time), and I said holy shit we're in motel hell. I go upstairs, get into the room, and there is the sound of running water, like some fast moving creek behind the place. As an added bonus there was part of a first floor roof that started right below our window and ran down at an angle to a few feet off the ground. Strange place. We still call it Motel hell to this day.

Police say more than 2,000 fetal remains were found on the property of an abortion doctor who used to run clinics in several Indiana cities.

Ulrich George Klopfer died September 3, WNDU reported. Nine days later, an attorney representing his family called the coroner's office in Will County, Illinois, reporting they found the remains among his personal property and requested they be properly removed.

The coroner's office took possession of 2,246 medically preserved fetal remains found in an area of Klopfer's property.

The family that owns OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma used Swiss and other hidden accounts to transfer $1 billion to themselves, New York's attorney general contends in court papers filed Friday.

New York - asking a judge to enforce subpoenas of companies, banks and advisers to Purdue and its owners, the Sackler family - said it has uncovered the previously unknown wire transfers among family members, entities they control and several financial institutions.

The transfers bolster allegations by New York and other states that the Sacklers worked to shield their wealth in recent years because of mounting worries about legal threats.

650ish rounds of 9. 250 of it cheap Tul steelcase. What was I thinking?

670 rounds of 5.56.

About 50 assorted 12 ga. A mess of 2.5 in number 2 shells. Some 3 inch 00. Some sabot slugs.

Another commenter upthread mentioned an "HTML Sandbox" at Free Republic.

Which is the ideal solution.

The ONT is most definitely NOT an HTML sandbox, and those who think it is, ought be swiftly disabused of that notion.

543 Wouldn't that be a chocatoo?

re Red Blobster, when my wife and I first to moved from the Gulf Coast to the icy confines of Illannoying, after we had scored a few paychecks we set out to get us some freakin' SEAFOOD.

Yeah. We went there. Once. You'd think that a seafood chain would know not to overcook shrimp, but they managed to rubberize the poor things. Overcooked, overpriced, over it.

We thereafter, as part of our yearly pilgrimage to visit the folks, brought along a couple of large ice chests to fill with Gulf shrimp. Problem solved.

Doctor: "I can't figure this oyt! Medical science is baffled! Let's take a more complete patient history. Tell me EVERYTHING you do when you get home from work. Don't leave out anything!"

Patient: "I pretty much do the same thing every night, doc. I lie down on the couch, open up a big ole bag of Cheetos, & turn on the Playboy Channel."

Coil tension springs, as on a flip-up door, or coil torsion springs, as on a sectional roll-up door? The latter, I have been able to tighten a half-turn or so, as needed. But you have to be damned careful when messing with them.

I found an old steel flip-up door at the dump once, well, two actually. No springs, but the tracks were there for one of them. I mounted the one with tracks in my barn, and hung old cylinder heads on cables to act as counterweights in lieu of springs. Has worked fine for years. The other door, I gave to friend, who placed it on hinges, and uses it on his big Quonset shop, and it, too has served well for years.

Smartest $400 you ever spent.

Those "worn out" springs can still tear your arm off if they escape their mechanical containment.

And you're entirely correct on the mag-springs thing. IF that was ever a factor, it was around the late 1800s or early 1900s, in the early days of scientific metallurgy.

Were you to find a 1911 mag loaded with .45 ACP back in 1945, I'd expect it to load and feed perfectly, even today.

The only thing that wears a modern spring out is the NUMBER of cycles, not a one-time compression thereof.

The key to understanding The Spell you are under consists of Six Magic Words:

"Can you make me a sandwich?", which offers a +1 to Saving Throw vs. Stupid. If you are a Warrior, you get a +3 versus Trap.

Be very wary of Sector Nine, Friend. It is Modern Day Sodom.

617 Was just doing an inventory of ammo in the locker.

650ish rounds of 9. 250 of it cheap Tul steelcase. What was I thinking?

670 rounds of 5.56.

About 50 assorted 12 ga. A mess of 2.5 in number 2 shells. Some 3 inch 00. Some sabot slugs.

And 1400 rounds of 22LR.

The news would say this is some sort of arsenal. I figure I am on the low end of hordian ammo hoarding.

But fear not I have packed it all in a canoe and I am going on the
lake tomorrow. I don't have any waterproof bags but I figure if I a,
just really careful nothing will happen.

Under the USN Fleet organization you have Task Forces. So Taffy.

Fleet. a bunch of ships
Force a discrete collection of ships with specific tasks and composition
Unit a subset of a Force, like the DE screen, CVEs, etc.

Squadron and Groups is in the mix also, usually for a single purpose, like ServRon, PhibRon, CarGru.

The 2019 Michigan MoMe is next weekend!!!

Join us September 20 & 21 in the greater metropolitan area of Chelsea, Michigan for the festivities.

Friday night, we dine in Hell. Literally. We'll be at the Hell Saloon in Hell, Michigan for dinner around 6:30-ish. After dinner, we'll return to the cabin campsite built on the cursed ancient Indian burial ground just down the road from the state prison for the criminally insane for ukulele practice.

During the day on Saturday, we'll be hanging out at the cabin, whittling entire trees into toothpicks & just generally relaxing. The roundtable discussion topic this year is "IKEA Shelving: Threat or Menace?", followed by small unit tactics practice.

Saturday evening we'll go in to town for diner at the BBQ joint around 4:30; after which we'll return to the campsite for a large thermal event & pants-less dancing to the finest ukulele band in all the land.

If you have a sense of adventure & questionable judgement, there are a limited number of berths still available in the bunk-house style cabin. Let us know if you plan on over-nighting on site.

670 Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found
a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She placed the shell to her ear and screamed.

There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back!
LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell
someone!
