The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

See that headline in the link? That is our proper function in the Middle East right now. We have the intelligence-gathering capability that can assist our allies against the Iranian regime. And we have the logistical capacity to move huge quantities of whatever may be needed; whether that is resupply of armaments or oilfield and refinery equipment remains to be seen. And we have air power and anti-missile technology that Iran would find difficult, if not impossible to counter.

Notice what is missing? Troops! Aside from naval support and air power, we should not...must not...put boots on the ground in the Middle East. "No Blood For Oil" may sound like a leftist screech, but in this case it is 100% correct.

US shares info with Saudi Arabia that blames Iran for oil field attack

President Trump has said the U.S. is “locked and loaded” and able to respond to the threat but also said he wants to avoid war. Iran has denied any involvement in the attack. Ahead of UN meeting, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said "there will be no talks with the US at any level," the Associated Press reported.
Let the Saudis bleed for a change. We should treat them as allies who are involved in a regional war, but we should not treat an attack on Saudi oil facilities as the casus belli for an American move against Iran.

Sure, pump up the Saudis and their neighbors to do the heavy lifting (if they are even capable)...that is fine, and we can make clear that we stand behind them...but not in front.

Oil futures are already coming down sharply, so the hysterical media reports about oil spikes are mostly bullshit. And I will happily pay more at the pump to keep American troops out of harm's way. Besides, I have heard rumors of a newfangled American technology called "fracking."

This is true, but I don't really care about the political costs of it, at the end of the day.

What I care about is that the Democrats have a decades-long track record of defeating America in every foreign war. We can't beat them, and sending kids to die in a pointless fight is not on my to-do-list.

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at September 17, 2019 11:07 AM (AzW6q)

38 Oil flow wasn't interrupted because the Saudis have at least 30 days of supply they immediately tapped into. There is still some pretty substantial battle damage, but they will repair it on a priority basis within the window. The real intent was to show Saudis weakness, and mostly give them a big financial hit- which they did. The ARAMCO IPO was even delayed, but frankly this was the last good excuse.

You will, and should see Iran and their proxies take some hits, with our support. We know where the ordnance was launched from and how it was accomplished. Right now the Saudis are putting their C-RAM systems in place and, if I were a betting man, I say the Iranians get some type of payback in the next 72 hours. I have some friends in that AO who already have their GO bags packed.

As for the Persians, let Saudis do the wet work. What we maybe should do is turn the screws a bit and put pressure on our allies who are still doing business with Iran.

42 I agree in part, disagree in part. First, the stakes here are incredibly high, as high as they can get, so we can't simply ignore what's happening and hope it all works out. BUT Iran is trying to push us into sending in Boots on the Ground, so clearly that would be a huge mistake.

Iran is playing a game here, but note that rather than giving up, they keep escalating. They tried mining tankers, we didn't respond much. They tried shooting down the naval drone, we didn't bite. Now they've tried a direct attack on Saudi facilities, and they were sure we would jump on that. (Bolton absolutely would have) and yet
we're still not biting.

Don't think this game is over - far from it. They're going to wait a month or so, and then they're going to do something even bigger, would be my guess. They want something from us, some kind of response, and they're not going to quit trying to get it, they'll keep escalating.

92 We have ships in the Gulf, and a Navy base in Bahrain quite close to the area of the strike. These ships have the capability to detect, track, engage, and destroy these cruise missiles. I fully expect that we *did* track those and were unable to do anything due to lack of defense agreements with KSA for something like that. I also expect that to change. Posted by: Anon a mouse at September 17, 2019 11:26 AM (6qErC)

195 It's not about the oil and for the most part it never was. There may have been a time when it was necessary to protect global energy supplies. But that time has largely passed. The most important issue is the geopolitical threat that is coming out of the region. Those are threats to global stability and our general well being.

I love the argument we should just let the whole shitpile collapse and have them kill each other. Given the friends and neighbors I've lost, that sounds pretty sonorous but it's not realistic. Most of the guys we lose even knew that.

So it becomes a game of how far your support people and how you accomplish it. You can't fight everyone, everywhere but you pick your spots, use force multipliers understand your asymmetric options and execute your plans.

We are not simply going to pack up, sit in our bubble and hope bad things don't come our way as a results. The entire length of world history shows that ends in disaster.

What they do have, like so much of the sandbox, is... SAND and empty spaces.

220 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. I haven't told a showbiz story for a long while, so how about one now?

By now, most people realize that Bing Crosby wasn't quite the abusive, tyrannical father his son Gary portrayed in the memoir Going My Own Way, but there is no doubt that Der Bingle was emotionally distant, opening himself up to no one and keeping even long-term partners like Bob Hope at a distance. Dorothy Lamour, for example, was despised by Crosby, who considered her a "dumb, lucky broad" and never bothered to hide his disdain.

https://tinyurl.com/yxzfcxj5

Bob Hope, too, could be emotionally distant, though he at least had, as biographer Richard Zoglin says, "a superficial bonhomie" and treasured his interactions with fans, penning thousands of responses over the years, with no other object than to say "thank you." To Crosby, however, fans were nothing more than an annoyance.

One time in 1940, while in NYC to promote Road to Singapore, Crosby saw Hope stuffing fan mail into a pillowcase. "What the hell are you doing that for?" he asked. Hope responded that he was taking the letters back home so that his secretary could help him answer them.

"I'll show you what I do with my fan mail," Crosby said. He poked through Hope's pillowcase, pulled out an envelope and ripped it open. Inside was a letter as well as a quarter which had been enclosed by a fan for postage and photos.

Bing put the quarter in his pocket and tossed the letter into a wastebasket.

I have a couple of friends who worked as ex-pats in the Saudi refineries, they were engineers. All of those stories were similar - one worked with about 9 Saudi managers, in luxurious offices, but every time something went wrong in the refinery that needed some hands on attention, they always sent him. (and consequently he got to know the actual workers in the refinery well, almost none of whom were Saudi) He said he always preferred being out in the refinery, not in the offices, because all the other 9 Saudi managers did with their time was to fight with each other constantly and bitterly to see which one got the nicest office, the biggest desk, and the most impressive sounding nameplate to hang on his door. They were never interested in anything else, and certainly would never dirty their hands with actual physical work.

We can spend time rebuilding our forces and capabilities after 20 years of yo-yo deployments in combat zones, and possibly even shoring up our domestic situation so we could sustain what would be needed, or we can send an already depleted force that could, at any time, wind up with a command structure that hates it and a media that will undercut it at home at every opportunity.

But hey, your call. Just remember how Rome and Persia went.

Yeah the spike in prices was just long enough so that the insiders could sell to the low-info investor using the propaganda media headlines for investment tips.

For a country that boasts of being able to read license plates from space, having significant military interests in the flight path from Iran - not be able to see or even be aware that an attack was happening is hard to believe.

Then again, our alleged omniscient "intelligence community" didn't see 9/11, couldn't find OBL, couldn't even overthrow their own government...

We are so gas lighted these days, its impossible not to come up with a host of conspiracy theories, false flag scenarios, incompetence, corruption.

People are such pendulums. Its never a reasoned middle study, its all or nothing. This kind of argument is a logical fallacy called "false dichotomy" in which you choose your position, and then an invented false position your opponent does not hold, and pretend those are the only two choices.

Obama used to do this all the time in his speeches. "Some call for nuns to be raped to death by orcs! I call for hugs for kittens!"

Sure. Because the world is getting bigger and less interconnected.

No sane person wants war. We don't always have a choice. Let's say we turn this over to the Saudis and sit back. What happens when Iran takes over Saudi Arabia because that would be the likely outcome without our intervention?

Why would Iran stop with SA when they have been proclaiming loudly for decades that their ultimate goal is to wipeout Israel? The entire region would likely become a battlefield. What then?

Trump isn't an idiot and clearly not a warmonger yet he is considering supporting the Saudis if his public statements are to be believed. Just because we have no interest in crazy Iranian mullahs doesn't mean the don't have an interest in us.

It comes from the fact that Iranian forces now dominate most of Iraq, Iranian backed forces control Syria, Iranian forces openly own Lebanon, and Iranian forces are close to overrunning Yemen. Also, Iran is quite close to developing Nuclear Weapons, thanks to Obama.

Iran has been quite open about their desire to create a New Persian Empire that would control the same territory as the old, and which would control a majority of the worlds energy reserves. That's why they embarked on a strategy of encirclement of the Saudi and Gulf states.

They've been working on this plan ever since the Mullah's took over, and they have been remarkable successful so far.

No, the question becomes WHY are we involved?

Just because you have the power to do something, does not mean you should do something.

You can do that right now with nukes. And without militarizing "space". Do you really want a bunch of tungsten rods floating around in Earth orbit, that any smart hacker could seize control of them? Face it, if they are up there, the opposition is going to try to either gain control of them, or block their use by their owner. Fat, juicy, targets.

479 It's especially stupid because we've never even kept the oil. There's no validity, it's been 100% blood for the benefit of others, because we're The Good Guys (tm), who never ever get to benefit from anything.

And yet every European ever born thinks the USA goes to war over oil constantly and we're just salivating at the chance to attack somewhere to get their oil.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 17, 2019 12:32 PM (KZzsI)

480 I mean, yeah I wish we HAD taken all the oil, but we didn't get it.

481 "Sure, pump up the Saudis and their neighbors to do the heavy lifting (if they are even capable)." It is my understanding that Saudi's equipment, enlisted men and NCOs are pretty good. Officer corps are pretty bad because "My daddy's important!" gets you 1lt at least. "I thought you guys were tough enough to take care of your own country!" might be an insult, but that might get Col Achmed to get his shit together.

Posted by: Inspector Kemp at September 17, 2019 01:59 PM (noE+3)

485 The Saudis would get their asses handed to them in a war against Iran. They cant even contain the Houthi insurgency in Yemen. The real danger here is not the disruption caused by the Iranian attack over the weekend but the Saudi response and the potential for further disruptions. Sure the US will be fine. But China and Asia will be fucked and desperate nations can do bad things.

Note to the "No boots on the ground" crowd":

I believe that there's an increased level of violation when "Boots on the ground" are involved. Like when your house gets burgled or a rat or two take up residence, there's a psychological sense of violation that can linger quite a bit of time.

For me, it's the duration on the ground that's importance. Come, do, and go.
