Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app. ___________ So that about wraps it up for this week. I see it is on all the news the last couple of days that the CDC has found that among five recent deaths the common factor was that they were just sitting there one day and then died. While CDC has not found a direct relationship they advise that all reconsider sitting. NY State is also strongly advising against siitting. Sitting or whatever the hell it was. Five deaths in ten years...
Shouldn't they recommend that everybody take up just sitting there and do nothing else? It as got to be safer than taking a bath or using the stairs. Posted by: Burnt Toast at September 07, 2019 05:31 PM (1g7ch) 25

I don't understand what "map out all the mating paths" means.
For the Advanced problem there are two forcing moves: 1. Re6+ Kd8 2. Be7+ and now either Kc8 or Kc7 3. Rc6+ and now either Kb8 or Kb7 3. ... Kb8 4. Bd6+ Kb7 5. Rc7# But 3. ... Kb7 white has no easy check 4. Bd6 anyway and black seems to have a free move 4. ... Rac8 seems to defend successfully. Oh wait. Missed the R on a1 so 3. ... Kb7 4. Ba6+ Kb8 5. Bd6# But now there appear to be other possibilities to use the white bishop. Do those count as "other" mating paths? Posted by: Off the reservation at September 07, 2019 06:30 PM (vWMNq) 108

The inference I draw is that the Taliban has the support of a pretty wide swathe of the population, and that defeating them would involve making war on that "civilian" population. I'd be fine with that. But the U.S. had no stomach for that 20 years ago when 9/11 was fresh. It certainly isn't going to go all My Lai now. Truth is, we should just stop fighting wars abroad. Truth is, we should just stop fighting wars abroad. We have no will to win them. So we just get a bunch of youngsters killed every now and again for nothing.
There's no experience like game experience. Look, every death is a tragedy and a loss for a family but our attrition in both Iraq and Afghanistan is really pretty low. Certainly sustainable for decades. I haven't looked but it wouldn't surprise me to find we've killed more troops in basic this year than we have lost in theater. As long as those traitors have influence we'll have to settle for punitive terror raids. The ground forces should just be deployed for national defense. Let the Navy and AF handle work abroad, because as soon as you put men on the ground, we'll have committed ourselves to a loss, and handed Dems a jar of broken glass to stuff up America's ass, and they will.
