Beginner Problem - White To Play (292)

Goal: White can force mate in 3 moves
Hint: Draw the Black king over to the h file

20190907 - Problem 1.jpg
r1b2r2/p3b1k1/2p1Bpp1/qp2Q1P1/3P2P1/4P3/PP3P2/2KR3R w - - 0 1

R.I.P. Pal Benko

Pal Benko, a chess grandmaster who was among the world’s best players for two decades, but who gave up his place in the 1969-72 world championship cycle to Bobby Fischer, paving the way for Mr. Fischer to become world champion, died on Monday in Budapest. He was 91.

The NY Times obit is actually worthwhile to read.

Intermediate Problem - White To Play (250)

Map out all of the mating paths.

Goal: Another forced mate in 3
Hint: I've found 3 mating lines

20190907 - Problem 2.jpg
8/3Q4/pk6/1pp2Bp1/7p/1P2PP1P/P5P1/KN3bq1 w - - 0 1

Advanced Problem - White To Play (315)

Like the last problem. Map out the mating paths.

Hint: The longest forced mate is 5 moves

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20190907 - Problem 1.jpg
r1b2r2/p3b1k1/2p1Bpp1/qp2Q1P1/3P2P1/4P3/PP3P2/2KR3R w - - 0 1

The decision tree for this problem is pretty much a straight line:

1.Rh7+ Kxh7
2.Qh2+ Kg7
3.Qh6#

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20190907 - Problem 2.jpg
8/3Q4/pk6/1pp2Bp1/7p/1P2PP1P/P5P1/KN3bq1 w - - 0 1

1.Qd8+!

The key move. Black's king has 3 flight squares

#1: Kc6
#2: Ka7
#3: Kb7

1...Kc6 immediately loses to 2.Be4#

If 1...Kb7 then 2.Be4+ Ka7 3.Qc7#

Finally, on 1...Ka7, 2.Qc7+ Ka8 3.Be4#

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20190907 - Problem 3.jpg
r3k2r/p2n3p/1pR3P1/3P3b/3P2pP/BP2P3/3KB3/R7 w kq - 0 1

1.Re6+ Kd8
2.Be7+

At this point, Black has 3 escape options. Here is the first one:

2...Kc7
3.Rc6+ Kb7 (or 3...Kb8 4.Bd6+ Kb7 5.Ba6#)
4.Ba6+ Kb8
5.Bd6#

And the second:

2... Kc8
3.Ba6+ Kc7 (or 3.Rc6+ Kb7 4.Ba6+ Kb8 5.Bd6#)
4.Rc6+ Kb8
5.Bd6#

And the third:

2...Ke8
3.Rf1 Nf8
4.Bb5+ Nd7
5.Bg5#

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

24 I see it is on all the news the last couple of days that the CDC has found that among five recent deaths the common factor was that they were just sitting there one day and then died. While CDC has not found a direct relationship they advise that all reconsider sitting. NY State is also strongly advising against siitting. Sitting or whatever the hell it was. Five deaths in ten years...
Shouldn't they recommend that everybody take up just sitting there and do nothing else? It as got to be safer than taking a bath or using the stairs.

On purpose as a distraction tactic? Pretty much any very high level competition results in a lot of pressure to perform and win, either internally or externally. That much pressure reveals strange things about some people.

107 I don't understand what "map out all the mating paths" means.

For the Advanced problem there are two forcing moves:

1. Re6+ Kd8
2. Be7+ and now either Kc8 or Kc7
3. Rc6+ and now either Kb8 or Kb7

3. ... Kb8
4. Bd6+ Kb7
5. Rc7#

But

3. ... Kb7 white has no easy check
4. Bd6 anyway and black seems to have a free move
4. ... Rac8 seems to defend successfully.

Oh wait. Missed the R on a1 so

3. ... Kb7
4. Ba6+ Kb8
5. Bd6#

But now there appear to be other possibilities to use the white bishop.

Do those count as "other" mating paths?

180 Trump said he could take Afghanistan in a short time but it would require killing millions. He's probably right.

The inference I draw is that the Taliban has the support of a pretty wide swathe of the population, and that defeating them would involve making war on that "civilian" population. I'd be fine with that. But the U.S. had no stomach for that 20 years ago when 9/11 was fresh. It certainly isn't going to go all My Lai now. Truth is, we should just stop fighting wars abroad. We have no will to win them. So we just get a bunch of youngsters killed every now and again for nothing.

There's no experience like game experience. Look, every death is a tragedy and a loss for a family but our attrition in both Iraq and Afghanistan is really pretty low. Certainly sustainable for decades. I haven't looked but it wouldn't surprise me to find we've killed more troops in basic this year than we have lost in theater.

Well, it's where crowds of Islamic terrorists have been hanging out since the 1990s, and set up their training camps from which they can plan and launch operations against western targets. So, in order to take the battle to them, we've got to go where they are.

That's the theory, anyway.

As long as those traitors have influence we'll have to settle for punitive terror raids.

The ground forces should just be deployed for national defense. Let the Navy and AF handle work abroad, because as soon as you put men on the ground, we'll have committed ourselves to a loss, and handed Dems a jar of broken glass to stuff up America's ass, and they will.
