Mid-Morning Art Thread

van Djick Isaac.jpg

Isaac Blessing Jacob
Abraham van Dijck

This is a fine example of why art is so much fun. I had never heard of this guy, and neither did WikiArt (no surprise), but a little poking around yielded some very fine work.

Is it great? Well...no. Jacob looks like he was painted 300 years later by N.C. Wyeth. But it's interesting to look at, and his other works are as good, if not better. van Dijck was presumably a pupil of Rembrandt, and even to this ignorant viewer the connection is clear.

So Jacob and his mom scheme to get his elder brother's blessing by pretending he is the hairy elder brother Esau. The father is blind, which helps the ruse, his odd shoulder bits are to make him seem hairy. The food is what his father asked him to hunt(but his mother procured iirc).

Yeah, not to make this too much of a religious thing, but when I was a kid, learning these stories, the point of them was lost for the most part.

Particularly this family. Lots of tricksy stuff, and murdering and all that jazz... I gotta say, when you compare OT family drama to the story of Jesus and his birth and life and the miracles and the double cross (see what I did there?) that led to his death...

Well yeah, as a kid, it was no comparison as to which stories were easier to relate to.

70 This is an odd painting. Isaac looks right for a student of Rembrandt but the woman has an older, more wooden, style. The colors and abilty to capture the textures of cloth and other items is well done. I don't know if the overall darkness of the work is about Isaac's blindness or the deception of Rebecca and Jacob or both.

The scene is one of the stories from the Old Testament that seem to reward lies and let the faithful and innocent carry the burden of the lies. I'm no Biblical scholar (incredible understatement) but this story of injustice is very irritating.

This is why we can't have meaningful discussions with leftists. The entire premise of their world view is that man is inherently good, or at least can be made so if the right people are in charge. It's a complete denial of reality based on a refusal to look at the blindingly obvious facts. Climate change is another example.

I like the end of Samson. The rest of the story is basically proto-superhero fantasy. He knows he messed up and there's no way out, so he gives himself up to destroy an ancient evil.

There are times when being a Samson is called for, and self-sacrifice is needed to stop evil.

95 Trump twitter storm:

@realDonaldTrump 37 minutes ago

Great news that an activist investor is now involved with AT&T. As the owner of VERY LOW RATINGS @CNN, perhaps they will now put a stop to all of the Fake News emanating from its non-credible "anchors." Also, I hear that, because of its bad ratings, it is losing a fortune.....

...But most importantly, @CNN is bad for the USA. Their International Division spews bad information & Fake News all over the globe. This is why foreign leaders are always asking me, "Why does the Media hate the U.S. sooo much?" It is a fraudulent shame, & all comes from the top!

As bad as @CNN is, Comcast MSNBC is worse. Their ratings are also way down because they have lost all credibility. I believe their stories about me are not 93% negative, but actually 100% negative. They are incapable of saying anything positive, despite all of the great things...

..that this Administration has done. They don't talk about the great economy, the big tax and regulation cuts, the rebuilding of the Military, "Choice" at our VA, our Vets, Judges and Supreme Court Justices, the Border Wall going up, lowest crime numbers, 2nd A, and so much more!

The Trump Administrations has achieved more in the first 2 1/2 years of its existence than perhaps any administration in the history of our Country. We get ZERO media credit for what we have done, and are doing, but the people know, and that's all that is important!

@realDonaldTrump 17 minutes ago

I know nothing about an Air Force plane landing at an airport (which I do not own and have nothing to do with) near Turnberry Resort (which I do own) in Scotland, and filling up with fuel, with the crew staying overnight at Turnberry (they have good taste!). NOTHING TO DO WITH ME

I had nothing to do with the decision of our great @VP Mike Pence to stay overnight at one of the Trump owned resorts in Doonbeg, Ireland. Mike's family has lived in Doonbeg for many years, and he thought that during his very busy European visit, he would stop and see his family!

Maybe that's why Dan was considered the lowest, least, and most disreputable of the tribes.

Or it course, if you synthesize these ideas, they make even more sense. You have a weak tribe, and your oldest enemy just defeated a third party. Their remnants want to join you. 135 When you read the entire story of Isaac, and Jacob, and Esau, including Jacob's final return many years later, it is very darkly comical, and I do think that was always the original intent, in keeping with a lot of ancient middle eastern literature. It's really a very good story - it's stretched out and done in a style no longer familiar to us, so I think most readers (especially those who are devout) have missed a whole lot of nuance and implication in that story.

and it actually does have a mostly happy ending, even for Esau.

The real problem is that the damage may not be evident in one or two generations. It may produce healthier, smarter children... but any unnatural genes or combinations invented by this method will eventually spread to unmodified people.

What happens if they react badly with something that wasn't present at the time? Now you've got generations of people who are a genetic time bomb.

No Consequence ... Until the people figure out the local lawyer gang is mostly a commie mafia of self-dealing liars and (unconvicted) felons. Then the thousand families in town could take revenge quickly, as the guild protects its own even in the face of a former asst DA murdering his wife with the kids in the house ... and not facing any charge despite strong evidence. (a real case, locally). If hard times come ... the syndicate might be taken out (hence they want our guns, of course)

"The Boss" (Royko) exposed Mayor Daly, but nothing so far has changed much. And we have funded the ongoing coup against Trump and America, by having our FBI/IC taken over by crooked lawyers from Hahavard or Yale, all in TheClub.

The change may have to come from a gun, or else all our communities and nation will be openly run by gangsters (as opposed to covertly run by gangsters). tick tock ... the masses would applaud violence against crooked MadeMen that took control of the legal system, imo. 187 49 32 Jacob was a sneaky little shit like his pal Niedermeyer. A thief, a liar and a fraud, and he was rewarded for it. There's a lesson to be learned here.

Posted by: Insomniac at September 09, 2019 09:47 AM (NWiLs)

The lesson is that God can build with even the crookedest timber.
Posted by: Mikey NTH

Also note that in the story, Jacob gets paid back for all his sneakiness and conniving by having others do the same to him. Not long after this, he is sent up to work for his Uncle Laban to get a wife (and probably to get him away from Esau, who is the big tough guy who wants to kill him after this) and what does Laban do? Laban tricks him into working 14 years for a wife instead of 7.

And this is part of the subtleties built into the story that you have to think about to understand - Supposedly, Jacob get's Isaac's "blessing" and all his goods, but what happens next? Jacob hightails it and goes on the run to another country, and Esau takes over everything and runs it all for the next 14 years. So what exactly did Jacob get for his dishonesty? A lot of grief, mainly.

221 When you read the entire story of Isaac, and Jacob, and Esau, including Jacob's final return many years later, it is very darkly comical, and I do think that was always the original intent, in keeping with a lot of ancient middle eastern literature. It's really a very good story - it's stretched out and done in a style no longer familiar to us, so I think most readers (especially those who are devout) have missed a whole lot of nuance and implication in that story.

and it actually does have a mostly happy ending, even for Esau.

Mostly due to the linguistic similarity of a tribe called the Tuatha Dè Dannan who appear in the Irish mythic cycle. Most historians say it means "Tribe of Danu", who is supposedly an obscure goddess. It could be taken to mean "Tribe of the God of Little Dan", though, as the -an suffix is found in Irish naming, and means little.

So once the liver finishes metabolizing the alcohol, the sugars hit the blood stream. BAM! if you're sleeping it wakes you up. The only advantage to the sugar high after the alcohol is metabolized in the middle of the night is that it gives you the opportunity to drink enough water to manage a hangover better.

262 Hi, Folks-

Just checking in with a medical update and also a very interesting religious article. I had to go to the hospital overnight after I almost passed out at the supermarket after having incredible arrhythmia and palpitations and slurred speech. After every heart/ brain test known to mankind (well, that's an exaggeration, but it felt like that) they determined I did not have a TMI (mini stroke) or a heart attack. So I'm a medical mystery. Someone in my church suggested an anxiety attack, but if so, that's a new wrinkle in my medical condition because I've never had that before. Thanks for your prayers. A plus was that I had very interesting talks with the medical personnel about their work and also a talk with a Christian there about the importance of prayer. She brought it up. I didn't-maybe because she saw a Bible on my tray. I would have preferred to have discussions with people outside the hospital, however. And don't forget folks-please send your prayer requests to apaslo at sign hotmail.com so she can include them for Wednesday's list

Since I see we have a religious theme for today there is an article from the U.K. "Daily Mirror" about a man who is being considered for Sainthood in the RCC. If he becomes a Saint he will be the first English person to become a Saint in 50 years. Perhaps many RCs have heard of him. He was a war hero in WWII and went to help lepers in Zimbabwe as a Lay Franciscian and was martyred there. He was also a poet and a musician and inevitably cheerful. His name was John Randall Bradburn.

272 The ending of the Jacob - Esau story is when Jacob finally comes back to Canaan, roughly 15 years after he left. He's gotten rich, has his wives, and his children, and all his flocks of sheep and goats, and many servants/herdsmen to take care of them. *But* they are all still just a big family group, not any kind of fighting force at all. So Jacob travels down with his huge entourage of wives, children, animals and servants, and suddenly he gets news that Esau is coming to "greet" him - and Esau has 400 men with him, and they're riding hard.

This tells us what Esau has been doing in the intervening years - Esau has basically become a Bedouin raider, and not only is he a badass, Esau has got 400 badass followers on camels who ride and do whatever they want to whoever they want. It's pretty clear that Esau is the most powerful character in the area by now, in an age before there was any such thing as a "government". So Jacob is terrified, and puts his wives and his children out if front (what a coward! even at the end! Hiding behind his children) because all he can do is beg for mercy.

But, surprise to Jacob, Esau over the years has become merciful, and greets his brother warmly, welcoming him back. And he says that Jacob can have all of this herding business and living in nice tents, because all Esau has ever wanted to do was tear around the countryside with his 400 bad-ass followers and raise hell, and that's what he was going to continue to do. (and then supposedly his group becomes the Edomites)

Jacob had the family and the descendants, but Esau was *always* the stronger brother.

The scene is one of the stories from the Old Testament that seem to
reward lies and let the faithful and innocent carry the burden of the
lies. I'm no Biblical scholar (incredible understatement) but this story
of injustice is very irritating.

Essau was not without agency. He's not faithful and not innocent.

The entire story arc of Jacob is about Jacob's redemption. The point is not that Jacob's lies were rewarded, but that he is a shit and he is redeemed through struggle and by the grace of God.

Taking advantage of a blind man...

This points to what I said are the subtleties of the story - it looks at first like Jacob has won some big victory with his sneakiness, but what did he win, actually? He had to high-tail it out of there for 15 years while Esau took over, that's what he won. And he got cheated himself in return for all his cheating.

A similar thing is in play in all of the stories about multiple marriages in Genesis and elsewhere. The Bible never explicitly says that they are wrong - BUT every time there is more than one wife and more than one set of children, that family is filled with intrigues, plotting, and murder. It always goes badly. Those characters who have only one wife and who stick with her, they have peaceful, happy, stable lives and are set forth as models of virtue. It's an important lesson written into the circumstances of the stories, even though it isn't stated overtly.

I thought CNN said they decided to extract him in 2017, and a White House spokesman said CNN's stories about Trump and the spy were inaccurate and could put people at risk. Cnn also said they considered removing the spy in 2016. So they can't blame that on Trump.

And since it is all TopSecret, seems odd that CNN knows all about it, unless it comes from the DeepState spies (domestic enemies) that took control of our IC, and still runs ops through our media against POTUS. And if we still had spies in Moscow on the inside, it might be good to float a lie that "we lost all our spies". idk.

bring us back a few thousand tons of oil, diamonds or gold from some of

Investors would love this. THAT'S how the space program will be
privatized.

There should be some serious efforts to do some interesting manufacturing in LEO. There's been some RampersandD along those lines for years, but nothing scalable so far. I think what they're looking for is a fully automated system that takes materials into LEO where they can be combined in the absence of gravity then returned to Earf to be processed further into useful items.

I see my SpaceSport game as the way to popularize space tourism, which is how it will actually happen. See a sport played in Zero-G live! This would require regular flights, which is something we can already do now more cheaply than ever thanks to the free market.

My experience in working with lots of men who have been hurt by women is that they hold onto the hurt, for a variety of reasons, and it never does them a lick of good.

If there is to be resolution, it is precisely where you suggest: In finding the peace from knowing you did what you said you would, that you have integrity, and that you do the right thing, REGARDLESS of what the other person does.

Personal integrity doesn't make one a chump, and having been duped in the past doesn't mean it will happen again. Learn from the past, then let it go.

It was an innovation in ship design by "privateers" that propelled England forward as a sea power. Of course the technological innovation was due to privateers really being pirates. Had they not had that, the Spanish Armada would have been successful. Early Tudor England was far behind the continent, Elizabeth couldn't even pay her armies and navies. Of course, other advancements followed and the primogeniture rule helped them maintain some stability, but those ships began their mastering the seas.

There's a lot of fascinating history in the technological innovations that allowed the english to not be the victim of Spain. It was much closer a contest than we imagine.

The Space Shuttle was the zenith of '70's engineering when it was launched in the '80's. That's not a knock against it.

All the experienced engineers in Congress wouldn't fund a vehicle that was safe. What they did fund was a vehicle that was expendable in the first two minutes of launch. Murphy was on that Congressional Committee, IIRC.

Then SCOAMF retired them for no reason when they still had over half of their expected airframe service lives left and forced us to fund the Russians to send our astronauts into LEO. #WASTF

Sort of the best laid plans kinda thing. The Semitic and other peoples forbade or discouraged sex with females during their periods. So the guys thought they could get around that problem with another piece. Then the women go and sync up their periods. Plus, the guys thought that women would never be able to get along in the same house so they wouldn't gang up on him. That only lead to separate residences for the women, twice as much expense for the men, twice as long till they could retire and drink beer all day. Women. Yes that is exactly right if you could bring it back all at once. Huge market shift. You are talking about something that is fairly huge like 5% size of our moon. You will have to get it here and will probably doing that bits at a time. Maybe mass driver parts back here. Then orbital processing?

Now, the raw materials market itself will change drastically before hand since we will have to create a way to get there and a way to bring back, process the materials mined . . . the economics are pretty interesting. Real question of whether or not we've already hit a resource bottle neck that would prevent us from effectively utilizing space for more resources. Of course there's probably a technical solution we'll get eventually that'll give us anti grav . . . which solves a lot of money problems, but not necessarily time problems.

In my friend's case the story is way more complicated than that. It was a 10 year process of manipulation that ended in divorce and him ending up being homeless talking to trees out in the woods. He kept trying to play by the rules, and she kept manipulating them. Ferengi rules of acquisition #109- Dignity and an empty sack is worth the sack.

A few years before the divorce, and after some time of separation he found a beautiful woman, basically his perfect match. The ex would not let him see the kids and it slowly took a toll on him. The ex manipulated him into thinking if he dumps the new girl and they get back together things would be good. She had NO intentions of getting back, she just wanted to new girl gone. He leaves the chick, she gets crushed, the wife says fuck you anyway, and then came the slow decent into insanity.
