I used to wonder why, when journalism has been going through a job-losing bonanza for years and years now, the media is so indifferent and hostile to the economic problems of flyover country. You'd think they could sympathize, right?
I finally figured out why that doesn't happen. Media jobs are largely concentrated in major cities and what that means is the people who work in the media have little to no contact with each other outside of their jobs. They don't live in the same neighborhoods. They're kids don't go to the same schools. They don't attend the same churches or social organizations. So when media people lose their jobs, it's like they just disappear and the ones still employed can remain in denial about the situation because it's like the fired folks just vanish from the face of the Earth. Which is something these Think Progress people are going to experience first hand. Mike Posted by: MBunge at September 06, 2019 04:19 PM (7Nkan) 127

On the Moon landing thing...
I happened to be watching (it was kind of a fluke thing). It seemed to be coming in at the wrong angle towards the end - falling short - and when it got to an altitude of about 400m, the data stopped coming in for some reason. If it had crashed, you would expect the data to stop at 0m, not 400m, and they still seem to be talking about what might have transpired. So I'm not sure if they even know that it actually crashed. Where did THAT come from? Really, I find the whole thing a little disturbing. Text of William Safire's speech for President Richard Nixon, in the event of a disaster besetting Apollo 11.
Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace. These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice. These two men are laying down their lives in mankind's most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding. They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown. In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man. In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood. Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man's search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts. For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at September 06, 2019 04:47 PM (KZzsI) Well, it's not like they were flying it like a drone, where you need a pilot. It would be able to operate autonomously. All we really know is that the comm link is down, which leaves a number of possibilities open. Obviously, losing your comm link is enough to make you look "not happy". Makes you frustrated and worried. Even if it didn't crash, the mission is pretty much a failure, if you can't get that link back. Posted by: Optimizer at September 06, 2019 04:56 PM (hOOi9) 451

The curly CFLs are good for nothing but proper disposal. Don't break them or throw them in the garbage unless you know the're non-mercury (not Freddie). Beyond anything else they're fragile. There are many good screw/plug-in LEDs thse days. They're not stupdendously expensive but their advantage over glowing-filament incandescent is dependent on how often/long they're operated. Seeing how many Big Corps are funding this left-wing nonsense, I really think we need to reconsider it being some victory for our side that corporations get to make campaign contributions.

IIRC, the Space Shuttle was the most complex machine that had ever been built at the time it launched. It was the state of the art in 1970's era aerospace engineering. Also I'm fairly sure Werner Von Braun had this idea for a reusable LEO craft back in the '50's.

To be fair LED bulbs are better and cheaper than ever before. The curly Q disaster of the florescent bulbs should be remembered as the failure of tech that it was.

Close. The tiles were the same. But the insulating foam on the external tank was changed to something environmentally friendly which also happened to be hard enough to wreck the tiles when it flaked off. Posted by: Ian S. at September 06, 2019 05:10 PM (ZGrMX) 532

And no accident of that nature ever happened again. That's what solving a problem looks like: when you fix it, it stays fixed. We don't often get to witness noble death.
