Hurricane Dorian Will Smash Into Florida on Monday; Probably at Category 4 Strength

A monster in the making?

Forecast to approach Florida with winds of 140 mph, Dorian, should it make landfall at those wind speeds, would become just the ninth hurricane to do so, dating back to 1851.

Dorian could be the biggest hurricane to hit the Miami area since Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

The latest forecast shows Dorian making landfall Monday night into Tuesday morning between Vero Beach and Fort Lauderdale, but different models show the hurricane taking different paths after landfall.

Most models are predicting Dorian will make a sharp turn north.

If Dorian continues on that track, Orlando and Jacksonville may see heavy rain, gusty winds and significant flooding. Dorian would then move north to coastal Georgia and South Carolina, where rain, storm surge and flooding is a threat.

Other models forecast a path across Florida, into the Gulf of Mexico and then by the Panhandle.

One Florida friend of mine just rented a hotel far from the coast.

One projection has it veering sharply north before it ever hits Florida, sparing Florida almost completely.

But then on track to hit Georgia and South Carolina:

complete miss

Hope everyone has time to prep. I hear that many gas stations are already out of gas.

Maybe because of this genius:

11 I live on a barrier island in the Fl Panhandle. Currently visiting family a 1000 miles from home. We still have Michael damage to repair (about 50 miles east of landfall). I no longer have any dunes to protect us (and, those and sandbags helped a lot.) Much sympathy for those in the path. Hopefully, Dorian won't gear up to a 5, like Michael did.

30 Our local weather people (Savannah) are warning us it may hit us Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Three years ago the island we live on (not a barrier, and about five miles from the Atlantic) was hit really hard. Thousands of huge trees down, hundreds of houses with at least one tree through the roof. It was bad. We escaped somewhat unscathed, but upon returning from evacuation, had no power for days.

And that was from just being "brushed" by Matthew. This looks bad.

My husband has a huge commercial generator he brings from his business. But if we evacuate, pfft. I just have to remember to empty and turn off the ice maker. I have all the family history books, Bibles, photos, etc., so I pack those up, my jewelry, and a week's worth of clothes. All the art, photos, etc. come down off the walls and under beds (we have a high, raised foundation). That's all I can do.

Oh hell, it snows every damn year in Michigan but the first time it happens, people spin out and go nuts.

Given that hurricanes are more rare than snow, I'm not surprised that they need reminders.

Winter lasts four months up here. But no, come November, people will be all like "What's this slippery white stuff on the road?"

191 133 Isnt this the story with every hurricane? Initial prediction is a CAT1-2. They hype and hyperbole it to a supermassive Cat 5, do the global warming handwringing for a few days. Then it lands as a tropical storm, and they shrug their shoulders and say "I guess the computer models had it wrong" But the one thing the computer models dont have wrong is that if the earth warms 2 degrees, all life will cease to exist!!!

There is a problem with people building in coastal areas that - without federal insurance subsidies - would otherwise be vacant.

I sat in on a meeting talking about this and how there's a move underway to get people to stop building on marginal/dangerous land and expecting gov't insurance to cover the loss.

Someone mentioned a Jersey Guy with a house on a freaking barrier island. That's nonsense on stilts. He should pay full frieght for any loss there and not expect others to subsidize his lifestyle.

Note that this does *not* apply to the bulk of housing or people affected by massive winds, storm surges, etc.

But for too long the feds have basically paid people to buy property that has a high likelihood of damage and used taxpayer money to subsidize the repairs.

That needs to stop.

It will also make it better for the people in Florida since they won't have those clowns trying to evacuate from property guaranteed to flood every time a tropical storm shows up.

361 The pic of the guy filling the 5 gallon buckets with gas is is the counter to so called price gouging.

The retailer who is selling the gas will probably be out of gas shortly because of increased demand and hording. His wholesale gas price is likely already going through the roof, but in a lot of state it can be hard to pass along that actual cost. After the storm hits he may not be able to get more fuel for days or more because of the disruption.

Price gouging laws limit rationing by price. They also, often, don't fully cover product or business costs for retailer in such circumstances. The station will effectively see revenue drop to zero for days (or more if it's really bad).

That buffoon filling gas into the buckets--I can almost guarantee he will not use the extra during the emergency but hey, it's cheap so why not? The station will be out of gas shortly, tanks dry. Someone who needs 5 gallons to get out of town who would pay $10 a gallon if they could only find some gas will be SOL.
