Gun Thread: Time Flies! [Weasel]

1 yr cake scaled.jpg
Happy Gun Thread Birthday!

Would you believe it's been a year? Yep, that's right, this is the 52nd Gun Thread by yours truly, so Happy Birthday, or Anniversary (or whatever) to you all! August 26, 2018 will forever be known as a date of infamy in literary and shooting history. Oh, we've laughed, we've cried, and argued nicely among ourselves, but we have also had a generally good time too, I think. I always try and say this in the comments, but thank you all for tuning in each week and making this what I hope is a fun place to hang out and discuss gun matters large and small. I really do appreciate all the kind words and encouragement, but most importantly, I appreciate the time you decide to spend here each week. No shit. And a special thanks to Mr. Of Spades for allowing us the space to destroy, and to Mr. Dildo for only charging me the discounted fee of $25 per thread. This week's check is in the mail, Amigo.

Now let's get to the gun stuff, shall we?

Last week we talked about flying with guns, and the additional steps necessary to check a weapon with your baggage. Towards the end of the post I referred to something which, all kidding aside, is actually a potentially serious matter. What if, through no fault of your own, you find yourself behind enemy lines in a jurisdiction which doesn't appreciate your 2nd Amendment rights as much as you do?

From last week:

Q: What happens if my flight is diverted to a hostile jurisdiction such as New York or New Jersey - will I go to jail?
A: I don't know, it's never happened to me.

Here's a skerry article from the NRA-ILA which states in part:

Special advisory for New York & New Jersey airports: Despite federal law that protects travelers, authorities at JFK, La Guardia, Newark, and Albany airports have been known to enforce state and local firearm laws against airline travelers who are passing through their jurisdictions. In some cases, even persons traveling in full compliance with federal law have been arrested or threatened with arrest. FOPA's protections have been substantially narrowed by court decisions in certain parts of the country, particularly in the Northeast. Persons traveling through New York and New Jersey airports may want to consider shipping their firearms to their final destinations rather than bringing them through airports in these jurisdictions.

I think the risk of an inadvertent stop in one of these jurisdictions is probably small, but if it's more likely based on your circumstances and itinerary, you may want to consider making other arrangements, or bring your attorney with you on the trip.

This part of the thread elicited a couple of great replies, which I think are important enough to repeat here rather than being lost in the comments. This first was from Village Idiot's Apprentice who said:

The New York/New Jersey part applies in particular to a passenger traveling lawfully through any of those airports, and their connecting flight is delayed, requiring the passenger to take temporary possession of their luggage, usually for overnight.

You take your checked baggage, and go to hotel, even on the airport property, and you now are illegally in possession of a prohibited firearm.

If delayed in NY/NJ... do NOT take possession of your luggage containing your firearm. Require the airline to retain possession of it, overnight if need be, and have them place it on your connecting flight without it ever being back in your physical possession during your delay.

And the next, towards the end of the evening, was from none other than Andrew Branca of The Law of Self Defense:

Q: What happens if my flight is diverted to a hostile jurisdiction such as New York or New Jersey - will I go to jail?

Correct Answer: Do not under any circumstances so much as touch the bag with the gun in it. The moment you do, you're in unlawful possession of the firearm, and the authorities will be more than happy to prosecute accordingly. Inform the airline that they are to remain in possession of the bag until it reaches a destination where it is lawful for you to possess a gun, presumably your final destination. An airline, as a "common carrier" can get in no trouble for having the gun in NY or NJ or CA or wherever, but YOU certainly CAN. For this reason it is best to NOT pack your gun along with other stuff you will desperately need when you land, such as medications, travel documents, etc.

Very useful advice to file away for when you need it. Mucho thanks to you both for bitch-slapping us with that knowledge!

Here's a great idea for a thread, but I need your help. Thanks to Tonypete for sending this in!

An idea for a possible gun thread: CCW insurance programs and the pluses and minuses of those we are familiar with. I know there are a dozen or so to choose from, but how does one choose one that is right for the individual Moron?

To tell you the truth, this is something I've thought about personally for a long time, but have never acted on. I'd like to hear from you all on the ones you might have chosen, and why. I'll take the most popular and do a side by side comparison and try and come up with a top pick. Sound bueno? Either tell us all in the comments or drop me a note if you prefer to remain anonymous. Thanks!

You will recall NeonMadMan had cateract surgery a couple of weeks ago, and agreed to share updates on how it's affected his shooting.

I had cataract surgery, which did a remarkable job of correcting my distance vision, but my near vision was blurry - because cataract surgery essentially implants new lenses fixed for distance vision only. My doctor worked up a prescription for progressive bifocals, essentially +2.5 readers in the bottom for near work (like the tablet and books), fading to near-clear glass in the top with a very slight correction for astigmatism. These work well - I can easily use my handgun sights again, as well as see the target clearly, with just minor adjustments in my viewing angle. Anyone else out there using bifocals will know exactly what I mean. I am very pleased with the glasses. And yes, I have been to the range - attached is a sample target - 25 feet, two handed hold, shooting an old S&W K-38 in single action mode.

NeonMadMan is Back!

Damn, dude! This is some nice shooting! I think we'll all agree we'd be pleased with this result under any conditions!

OK, so I've been harping on practice and one handed shooting and just getting out of your comfort zone and trying something different during your range time. Well guess who took me seriously and did her homework? Our pal and delightdul 'ette Satrose that's who!

I have had some non life threatening medical issues this last year, which involve severe bouts of vertigo. Not conducive to going to the range to shoot, nor actually safe to shoot. (This is my excuse for the crappy shooting you will see in a minute.) But this week I am able to walk in a straight line so I went to the range. And I started thinking of the “practice like you will do in reality “ adage - and how it relates to us ladies and our jewelry. I never go to the range with my rings on. I shoot tournaments with a silicon band only, if that. But if I have to defend myself, chances are I will have jewelry on. “Hold on while I take my rings off” is not really an option. (The same reality applies to high heels and tight skirts/jeans/dresses, but thats another whole issue.)

So….. I decided to shoot with my rings on, cold, no warm up, after having not shot in … well awhile. Like a month or two? I used my home defense gun, a Springfield Armory XD -9. I went in, and loaded five rounds in several magazines. Then I shot (no warm ups, no “mental thinking” time) from a low ready. The distances were 3 yards, 7 yards, 10 yards and 15 yards. I would shoot, pull the target back in, put black sticky dots over the holes, then send out to the next distance. Low ready, shoot, repeat. Steady firing pace, not slow but not "Youtube five shots in two seconds" either.

What I discovered:

1. I need to get to the range more! Well duh on that one.
2. The rings I had on actually made me really grip tighter, surprisingly, and that was a good thing. It was not comfortable at all but it was doable.
3. I realized what I had to fix grip wise with rings on, which was the purpose of the exercise.

A Range Officier came by and gave me a hug. (I am the honorary grandmother of all the guys) He commented that I should consider doing this for about 50 rounds and then take the rings off to concentrate on other shooting mechanics. His rationale was that “you will only unload one magazine with your rings on in a real life situation”. Huh. Okay, I see the sense in that because after awhile my fingers did start to swell a little.

So that was my adventure at the range. I will definitely repeat with my concealed carry, a Sig Saur P238.

So here are the results at 7 yards with rings on:

ring7yard scaled.jpg
7 yards with rings on

and here's a look at 15 yards with rings off:

norings15yd scaled.jpg
15 yards with rings off

Great job, Satrose! I'd take either set, and you're very smart to be thinking about how external factors might influence your shooting. It's the same logic as practicing single and off-hand shooting. Also, hope you're feeling better. Very nice and thanks for sending these in!

Any ideas?

I'm fine with a regular solvent and/or oil, but which?

The baffles BTW are aluminum or some such shit.

Apologies if this was already answered. I'm old and don't remember shit.

44 Congrats on the gunniversary Weasel. This is always my favorite AoS thread of the week.

This link was mentioned mid-week. By the time I wrote up this wall o' text and found all the pixy-unapproved quote marks in the pasted text, the thread had moved on. I decided to hold my comments for the gun thread hoping that Andrew Branca might be around again and add his thoughts.

Nice win for Michigan gun owners.

https://bit.ly/2KOUgI5

On first glance it does look like a win for gun owners as the decision was in favor of a permitted gun owner who used a gun in a bad situation without shooting anybody. But I don't agree that it's good for all gun owners. Read the article to get the details but the gist of it is:

The court of appeals, however, said that's not the law. When one brandishes a weapon without firing it, they don't, in fact, use "deadly force." They use nondeadly force... (emphasis added)

And:

As the court noted, "merely to threaten death or serious bodily harm, without any intention to carry out the threat, is not to use deadly force, so that one may be justified in pointing a gun at his attacker when he would not be justified pulling the trigger." (emphasis added)

I have always been taught and understood that a threat of deadly force (brandishing a gun in this case) is equivalent to actual use of deadly force in terms of when it is or is not justified. That is the law in TX (and I imagine in most other places) and to say otherwise like this ruling does muddies the waters horribly, IMO.

Imagine that you're on the other side of the situation. Suppose someone points a gun at you. How are you to know their intentions? Can you use deadly force to defend yourself or do you have to wait for the attacker to shoot first as the first quote seems to suggest? Seems to me that under the logic of this ruling, if you don't wait, you risk being the one at fault if the other person says after the fact "I wasn't really going to shoot" and a judge or jury buys it.

Note that the issue in question is not whether or not self defense is justified as the trial court rejected the MI woman's self defense claim and (as far as the linked article tells us) the appeals court didn't rule on that, only on the level of force. My point in this comment isn't to re-argue the facts of that specific case but to discuss the consequences of the appeals court ruling.

The easiest way to find out is to try to penetrate the facility. You can make an reasonable assessment based upon the immediacy and seriousness of the response.

63 By the way, I do have a carry permit here in CA, which is supposed to be legal throughout CA.

However, there is no way I would ever CCW in San Francisco or surrounding areas, if, for some reason, I wound up in that area.

Much like NY, I believe San Francisco and surrounding area cops would gladly toss one in jail for carrying, and worry about the legality later.

68 Not-so-fun-fact:

The Popeyes nearest where I work, which I've been frequenting, has a store behind it, called Field Time Sports & Guns. This is in the Stanton area of OC.

I guess it couldn't deal with insane California gun rules and regs anymore, because it's now closed. Sign has been removed (lots of label scar on the building though).

69 NaClyDog @ 40- Dude, I carried since age 16, legally. Mostly. Only had a carry license since 90's here in Texas, and then after surrendering my Florida drivers license for a Texas one (when I retired USN). That was my first opportunity. Don't go anywhere without a firearm, bro.

70 Here's a story for the crew. My Dad was in the hosiery business, back when we had mills in Carolina. A long-time associate flew up from Raleigh with a brand-new 4" 686 as a retirement present. As there's Someone who looks out for people like that, he just breezed through LaGuardia with it in his bag. It took Dad TWO years, a trip to Texas, and the purchase of a Ruger No. 1 in 7mm Mag to get that S&W on his NY pistol permit. Could have been worse - I really stuck my neck out on a 1910 Mauser. Dad was on the way out, and he'd given that pistol to his aunt in NJ. The Jersey cops sent us a letter telling us it was on its was to the furnace, and Dad said "Get that pistol". They gave it to me on my NY permit, but no way could I make it legal - and I sweated that until the very day I emigrated to the Great State of Georgia.

73 Until there is nationwide reciprocity, would not be prudent.

This reciprocity thing is starting to become a pet peeve of mine. If we must ensure reciprocity for gay marriage, a totally new and unprecedented construct fabricated by 5 black robed wannabe dictators, how in the fuck can the 2nd Amendment - not new but enshrined in the founding documents - not enjoy the same reciprocity? The world wonders.

You have to be a super edumacated, super suffistikated lawyer type to come up with the twisted pretzel logic of that conundrum.

This is confusing as hell, and I really need to look into it. Thank you for posting it.

My understanding was that drawing and presenting a concealed weapon is only justifiable if you expect that you will need to fire it. On the first read-through, it looks like it's not deadly force - which, fair enough, presenting is not itself deadly force - but isn't it still assault?

88 This week was French rifle week at the range.

I shot both my MAS-36 and MAS 49/56, iron sights only. Both shot extremely well out to 600 yards, but the MAS-36 shined.

While the 49/56 would hit the steel 2 out of 3 shots, the 36 rang the steel three times each from 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600 yards and back down range again. Could not miss with the funny little rifle. It is hefty but short and feels like a carbine in your hands when shooting. The rear sight is adjustable for elevation only due to a funny leaf spring change out needed to adjust windage but I was able to remove the front nose cap and drift the front sight as needed to zero the rifle. The French designed these rifles to be soldier proof and did not want the average trooper messing around too much with the sights, etc. But the French are assholes that way.

As a cautionary note, the 49/56 will slam fire occasionally when using commercial ammo due to soft primers. Be aware and always keep your muzzle pointed downrange and your firing pin free of oil/debris by checking with the shake and rattle test. I like using French military surplus in this rifle just for that reason.

Viva la France!

I'm left-handed, and left-eyed, but I shoot (lefty) with my conventional Mossberg. We spend our lives adapting to tools made for righties - pencil sharpeners, scissors, can openers, Mossbergs - and I figure this is just one more thing I have to work around. When I eject the spent shell I just hold it out a bit in front of me, so the shell doesn't land on my pants leg or my feet.

128 Okay, not that this isn't official, given what I have posted here, but I absolutely, 100%, loath Kevin "gelatinous fat man" Williamson. Today's column, or should I say, semi-obit, on David Koch is every reason to know, beyond a shadow of any doubt, that Kevin is a unrepentant imbecile. Kevin: "Hey, David is our kind of conservative, although about 50% of the things David believed wouldn't "fit neatly into what we would call conservative views" - translation: the man, like a lot of capitalist, was a global capitalist who had no need for American support for any of his ventures. And Kevin, along with Conservative, Inc. could give a rat's ass less.
More Kevin: "Hey, you know that Koch supported the Ballet, you fucking heathens."

This from a guy from the plains of Texas who married some harridan that accuses him of wearing a Sonny Corleone wife beater and taking her to the "Carlos woodshed." Lectures about high culture we don't need from Kevin.

Humble bunny Kevin ain't, although he should be, just about the time that most real people would draw their cards in, to use a Texas phrase that Kevin, born on the low side of the tracks, might recognize.

He's a blight on what might be considered intellectual high brow thought, certainly the type that resides 24/7 in his mind.

As to arms none of us will be getting any time soon, in San Diego there is the "alpha dock" [ammo dock] on the North Island [east] side of the channel - ships definitely load/off-load ordnance there [and the storage bunkers, just like those at Seal Beach, are visible nearby].

Then, directly across from that on the Pt. Loma side is the sub base [no missile boats, exept for conversions for the SEALs and UUVs mumble mumble sensitive things - above it on the hillside below Rosecrans cemetery and Cabrillo national monument are ..... kinda bunkerish-looking thinggies. Always look for triple-fencing when looking for interesting ordnance locations.

Logic dictates that the major portion of the fleet based in San Diego would have ready access to special ordnance. Both locations mentioned above are on secure guvamint land, the North Island one of course quite isolated from the outside world.

145 I had cataract surgery last year. Still in my 40s, so the youngest guy in the waiting room at the eye doc. I can shoot irons with progressive bifocals but I found it easier to get a miniaturized red dot installed on my carry pistol. Now I just target focus and put the dot where I want to hit (with some aim adjustment for distance; since I'm zeroed at 25 yards I have to aim 2 inches high at 21 feet). Had suppressor height sights installed just in case the red dot has an issue but Trijicon RMRs seem as durable as Nokia phones.

Let's put aside for the moment that the City of San Antonio does not sell guns and that there is nothing for them to "buy back". These idiot schemes have been tried in other cities. Other than encourage burglaries and other such crimes, what has there effect been on crime? ZERO.

And in my hometown of San Antonio. To say I am embarrassed is not adequate. They should consult the Texas Declaration of Independence. These words were cited as a grievance against Santa Anna four days before the Alamo:

"(The Mexican government) has demanded us to deliver up our arms, which are essential to our defense, the rightful property of freemen, and formidable only to tyrannical governments."

The US Concealed Carry Association
(USCCA) they have three plans so I could pick one within my budget.
They cover Self Defense for Civil, Criminal, Bail Bonding and
Attorney retainer. They have attorneys experienced in defending
citizens but you can use your own. Funding for Criminal Defense and
bail bonds are upfront and they have 24/7/365 Critical Response Team.
Thank God I haven't had to use them; and don't want to; but figured
having insurance just in case for a self defense shooting equals home
and auto insurance.

180 The 1866 reproduction [Uberti] "Yellow Boy" lever rifle is a hoot to shoot [45 Colt]. Was pinging an 8" plate @ 1OO yds on my last duty day - but only about 1 out of 5 shots. Meh. The sights are what they are, and I need more practice with it. The silhouette targets at matches are larger, only one I had trouble with last time were the rams @ 2OO.

Don't plan to disassemble to clean very often - looks like a bit of a project. Probably will wait all the way til there are functional problems. Can clean residue off some of the working surfaces without disassembling.

Will probably start reloading 45C [and 38O for the CZ] in a few months, when the garage cools off.

186 Range report, feel free to skip-

Yesterday was some fine 19th century tech on display. I cleaned and "fixed" the .44 Ruger Vaquero* so I took it and my new Henry Single Shot in .223.

The Henry was just fun. Shot about 60 rounds, one shot at a time, off hand at 25 meters. I wasn't putting it all in one hole but I did well enough. I really enjoy the single shot, it barks but recoil is light.

The Ruger I fired one-handed, continuing the 'stuff I suck at' training. By gripping hard, I got some good consistent groups. I surprised myself, honestly. The wood grips got a little loose from all the shooting but I had a screwdriver to tighten them up again. I still had some rounds go wide but far less than last week.

As a ending flourish, I jumped into the 21at century and put 50 rounds one handed. Again some horizontal stringing and some grouping to the right (?!) but group was pretty tight. I'm actually semi-happy with my performance.

Next week we are going to do a mix of dry fire and two handed accuracy after all the one-handed drills. Get back some precision before trying the one-handed thing again.

A good, good day at the range.

*I just put some drops of CLP BreakFree around the loading gate. Next day, it opened fine. But there was hardly any gunk down by the loading gate so....a mystery.

201 Re: SELF-DEFENSE INSURANCE

I have an entire course, available either streamed online or on DVD, on how to go about choosing self-defense insurance (or whether you need self-defense insurance at all). There's no one plan that's perfect for everybody, because each person's circumstances and needs differ, but we explain how to go about thinking about the problem, which factors are important and which really aren't, thinks to look out for that you might not otherwise have considered, and so forth. The only caution is we produced the course last fall, and since then the NRA Carry Guard program has apparently gone defunct, so you can ignore that part of the course. Not that it matters, Carry Guard sucked and we mostly just cautioned people against it, anyway. For more information, and just for you fellow morons I've re-started our 50% off sale, point your browser to: lawofselfdefense.com/insurance

How difficult or easy is it to damage a gun, using your bare hands and not another weapon on them? Can you bend or damage a gun by brute force so much that its damaged?

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at August 25, 2019 08:17 PM (KZzsI)

I don't think you could with your bare hands. Maybe by banging a plastic gun on a hard surface you could crack or break the frame.
Posted by: Weasel

It might be possible to bend a rifle barrel enough by trying to wrap it around a tree like a golf club.

217 Christopher R. Taylor @197, of course you can damage a firearm or accessories with your bare hands. Although I dropped a BAR 30-06 with a Nikon scope out of a deer stand, and 30 minutes shot my biggest buck with it. About 50 yards one shot dropped him in his tracks.

You could probably wreck the internals of a gas-operated gun pretty well if you disassembled it, especially a piston gun, but the first shot would still get off. But by that time, you could just as easily lose that f'ng spring that you'll never find again or put something in backwards.

Once you take "bare hands only" out of the equation, I think most people would need a lot of leverage, so you could maybe wedge a muzzle under a heavy object (concrete, vehicle, Rock Or Something) and put a barrel out of true. Depending on how thick the walls are, it may still fire for certain values of "fire".

219 I'm having fun reading the biography of Frank Hamer, Texas Ranger. The notes and info on Texas law and customs are pretty interesting. Their definition of "self defense" was so lax one of the Rangers was arrested for shooting a man to death, and he claimed self defense because he said the guy had a gun. The fact that the two gun holes were in the man's back weren't enough to get a conviction from the Texan jury.

Well I'd narrow it down and say this is for an old west gaming supplement, but the setting ranges from pre-civil war to the first decade of the 20th century so you'll have indians and some old mountain men still toting flintlocks up to some pretty modern guns.

Bare hands bare hands? Or banging it against rocks and stuff?

Some guns are more fragile than others. I would not try to break my Ruger P90, damn thing is all steel. But I have some older revolvers that might break if I hit it right against the corner of a brick wall. And my top break pistol would come apart easily.

I know there are about a hundred different causes of vertigo.. my wife suffers from this.
If they are not able to resolve your vertigo with all of the exercises, blah blah blah.. there is another cause that is very little known or recognized.. migraines.. non-headache migrain syndrome.. foods that trigger migraines also trigger these.. my wife doesn't even need to eat trigger foods to suffer from vertigo every day.
20 years ago she was diagnosed with this and prescribed anti-anxiety meds.. boom! vertigo gone!
But last year she started having AFIB heart problems after a car crash.. anti-anxiety meds are not compatible with AFIB meds.. so her vertigo is back..
Just a shout ou tabout this weird vertigo problem in case it helps...

the AR platform, for all its advantages, can be remarkably fragile... said the guy who was an ARNG armorer more than once.

I find the Vaquero, mine is in 45 Colt, balances well but I need to use strict trigger discipline to get the most out of it. That basically means taking my time and being sure to use the tip of my index finger. If I don't, I end up putting most of the trigger finger through the trigger guard.

Abortion: A right found only in a contrived, made-up "Right to Privacy" portion of the Constitution. Yet anything that even renders abortion even merely inconvenient is utterly intolerable and struck down by Random Hawaiian Judges -- to the extent that if you don't want to pay for your own abortion the taxpayer must foot the bill. A sidelock (like a flintlock) will be pretty vulnerable at the hammer. Something like a Colt 1903 pocket hammerless, with very few moving external parts, will be a lot harder to just smash. It will depend on what it is, how disabled it needs to be, and how much time the person has.

The lock mechanism in old firearms is delicate compared to the modern ones.

Partly that's because the firing pin was still on the hammer, so if you cock it and them smash it against something, you'll likely break the lock.

It may not cock again, or be bent to one side.

One of my ancestors was burned alive by the Shawnee in 1782 and the reason we know the story was that the *other* captive escaped by pretending to need to pee and then hitting his captor with a tree branch and then - because they left the muskets nearby - smacking the flint locks with the same branch, breaking all of them.

With no means to shoot him, it came down to a foot race and he had the adrenaline edge to get away.

Maybe I should try to look up that owner who's part of the Big Sandy shoot near Yuma, in the spring, met him at the range years back, he gave me his # in case I wanted to come out to the owners' "pre-shoot" the weekend before. He had BARs, a Maxim gun, other stuff, but no 1919, but others would.

I stopped using Hoppes this spring. Worked well enough, but stinks up the house and the wife complains.

So I use Break-Free CLP and it seems to work as well without the stink. Seems a champ at getting gunk and carbon out, but not so much on scrubbing the bore, which requires me to use extra elbow grease and a wire brush.

It seems to have rejuvenated the much-reviled Dreyse M1907, so there's that.

328 butch/Grump - I really wanted to get a purty Beretta .38O but they dropped off the idiotic CA "roster" before I pulled the trigger. Handled one at a shop, was very nice. For now I've got the CZ-83, also very nice, filling that niche, but always check the ads for a used one here in CA [yeah, that makes effing sense - a "roster" based on "safety" allows LE to buy off-list gunz, OR private citizens to buy them second-hand - WTF?? And this absurd law keeps passing judicial tests - surprise!].

That stainless Beretta .38O was especially purty.

330 Heh.
It's an odd thing. More "crack" and fury and more recoil (this is a lightweight revolver, so...), and greater distance. 50 feet w/22 is a guessing game, but with practice the mag can hit targets quite a ways off, and seems to be more accurate overall (I know, there are other variables). I highly recommend!

337 281 ... "Any of "you people" have much (any) experience with the .22 Magnum?"

I have several single-action revolvers that have a 22 mag cylinder. I found the Heritage Rough Rider was more accurate with the mag than long rifle. The Rugers were a toss up. The recoil, while not bad, is much more obvious with the magnum. The round has a number of uses for hunting, so I've read. Not sure there is any target shooting advantage to them. And they cost a lot more.

Did you have a specific use in mind?

342 Only .22WMR is the Single Six with two cylinders. Have shot some WMR, was fun. Don't hunt so no particular use for mag - but I bought a bunch of the ammo anyway [and that was a few years ago, before CA idiocy ramped up even more]. Love the Single Six. Was the first gun I shot, as a yute. I used to always start with it for any range session, to "warm up", practice trigger pull, breathing, focus, etc. Gotta get back to that. Good tradition.

That's very kind of you. We also do blog posts pretty much every day, for folks who are interested in self-defense law stuff.

Each day's post is freely available, then as posts age they get locked down for our members.

But the most recent post is always free, the most recent three posts are free for Bronze members (which costs nothing, but you do have to register because Bronze comes with commenting privileges and we need some control over those). Then there are higher levels of membership, of course, and those actually cost a few pennies a day.

One of the guys on a 4 wheeler brandished his pistol to the hunters on foot, one of whom immediately shot and killed the brandisher. No charged were brought. There is a lesson in there somewhere.

361 "Andrew, if you can brutally summarize, was the appellate decision "overblown" good, or bad, from the perspective of common sense and the constitution, i.e. from gun owners/CCers perspective?"

The decision doesn't really change anything. Whether a particular display ("brandishing"/"threatening") of a firearm constitutes a deadly force threat or a non-deadly force threat just normally is an issue of fact that falls within the province of the jury--it's the jury's call to make. The reversal in Michigan was because the judge made that call as a matter of law, without giving the jury the choice. The appellate court simply correctly noted that this was reversible error, because it's up to the jury, not the judge, to make that call. No big deal. This is the kind of reversal that happens every day, all over the country. Doesn't really change gun law or self-defense law at all.

364 Anybody else build/shoot oddball AR pattern rifles? So far, I've acquired a 450 Bushmaster (Remington), and built a LR308 (AR-10) chambered in 375 Raptor (modified 308, necked up to 375 caliber). And I've ordered a LR308 upper from Bishop Ammunition chambered in a real freak of a cartridge: 475 Bishop Short Magnum. Supposedly, this round generates around 5,000 fpe at the muzzle! Practically pointless but WTH? So, are there any other morons out there that are simply bored with 223 and 308?

Both AR 10's are .308. AR15's are: 5.56, 6.5 Grendel (my favorite), and 7.62 x 39. Been considering a .350 Legend but fear of caliber creep has kept my wants in check.....so far. I don't think I will add anything to the AR10 platform. Loaded up it is a pretty heavy rifle. The 15's get exercised much more frequently.

If I were thinking about getting a rifle, I'd probably get a very basic centerfire AR-15. In fact, my first rifle was a very basic centerfire AR-15. And they're pretty affordable right now, too. Can you tell us what type of shooting you plan to do?

Having read your blog, I completely agree.

When I did the NRA class (before Michigan was a shall-issue state) they had a local prosecutor come out and run us through scenarios where we were asked if we should draw our gun.

No matter the situation, he could outline how he could prosecute us.

Basically, treat the gub as a weapon of last resort.

One thing people asked was: is it lawful to go from concealed carry to open carry? (I.e. not drawing the weapon, but merely revealing it.)

To this there was no good answer. The prosecutor said even leaving it untouched in the holster would get you a charge of brandishing.

As Weasel asks, what kind of shooting? Next, practical issues - cost of ammo [it can vary quite a bit between calibers], will it be a rifle others, including women or young people, might be shooting, etc.

S&W 610. 6" barrel
Sig P227 (used)
Sig P938 (used)
Rock Island Ultra FS HC in 10mm

The 610 is a joy to shoot.

Need to drift the P938's rear sight a touch.
The P227 feels and shoots like my P220.
The 10mm does need more shooting to break in. Got some MecGar mags coming for it tomorrow. The factory mag spring need to be a touch strong, I think.

397 one of the best things about the AR-15 center fire lower, is that you can have many different uppers, in various calibers, for different uses.

the rim fire version does not give you the same flexibility.

and uppers are NOT a weapon, so you can have them shipped to your home w/ no wait or checks.

405 385 "The prosecutor said even leaving it untouched in the holster would get you a charge of brandishing."

A brandishing charge for a holstered gun would be pretty tricky. But it doesn't matter--if they can't hit you with brandishing, they'll try aggravated assault, which is a felony generally good for 10 years, probably a lot more with a gun sentencing enhancement.

Getting charged, and convicted, of aggravated assault is a lot easier than many people imagine. Most of the cases I work on involve otherwise law-abiding people who have never been in trouble with the law a day in their lives, and suddenly find themselves looking at an agg-assault felony and a multi-decade felony sentence.

Don't go getting into fights you don't need to get into, folks. Make sure the stakes you're fighting for are worth the risks you're incurring.

Mostly, they're not. (Of course, when they ARE, then nothing will do but fighting 150%, so it's important to know which response is the right one.)

412 Chavez.... I'm seconding Weasel's advice.

Get a good quality, baseline AR-15. Because it's such a modular system, you can Barbie Doll it up, down or sideways to suit your tastes and preferences.

The more you learn about it, it's accessories and options for modifications, the better you'll be able to "tune it" to your needs, vs. having to tune YOU to adapt to some rifle you end up not really liking.

Plus, you can change it's dimensions to an astonishing degree, so you can make it FIT you, your body type, your shooting posture, etc.

My suggestion? Go with a Ruger AR-15. Good reputation, affordable, well-reputed factory support.

It's "good enough", unless you're heading over to the sandbox with serious intent.

My $0.02, etc.

453 And I agree with JTB re: the single shot LR in .22.
Until firing a weapon comes kinda natural, it's best to have to go through all the motions to fire one.
I'd also start shooting at a range, maybe even a basic class to start.
Things a lot of us learned by going hunting with Pop and the old relatives for years before being allowed to carry won't come natural at first.
I remember the first time my brothers and I went with Dad to a friend's farm to hunt over dogs for the first time. It was a 2-3 hour drive.
After the chit-chat and ground rules, the other guy's sons loaded up the shotguns, and each of them threw off the safety. Pop challenged them. Their Dad said, "That's the way we hunt".
We drove home.
Never forgot that.

Here in Georgia, you can open carry if you have a permit. sometimes you see people with side arms at the grocery store. It's a little unsettling, to be honest.

Concealed carry is also allowed. One of our members at church, retired Army, conceal carry's.

On the other hand, in Michigan, a firearm anywhere in the vehicle is concealed, so unless it's cased and locked away from ammunition, it's carrying concealed. Which is moot if you have a CPL. But you have to intuitively know if the restaurant you're in makes more than 49% of its revenue from alcohol, because then it's a bar, and you can't carry.

Yeah, it's weird.

476 I think CA [well, with the 9th] has got the'selves in a bit of a jam by banning open carry [formerly allowed] while still having very stingy "may issue" for CC, depending on county/sheriff. Or they did, anyway.

And by "jam" I refer to the former and now optional situation wherein an express constitutional right [to bear arms] is clearly, effectively negated by state law - and that this is untenable. Today? Well, you know.

488 EBshade, that's what I was getting at. At one point there were two CC cases pending in the 9th - the Peruta one, and one from HI. One of them involved this nice issue of no concealed carry and no open carry = no bearing arms, and presented the politburo/emergency committee, er, "court" with a little dilemma, and the fear that they might be approaching the limit of brazen, lawless, bad faith vandalism, damn, er, "jurisprudence" on the matter. I.e. fear of easy reversal at scotus.

In HS (c. 1985) we invited Police Chief of nearby Great Falls to speak to our Government class. He said the only sure thing was to retreat to an internal room with no egress before you could shoot an intruder.
And if you were dumb enough to cap an intruder coming in a window or door, pull the body rest of the way in and stick to your story.

496 Weasel,
Thanks for the all of the weekend firearm posts and happy anniversary of them.

Chavez, you have some good advice here for an additional firearm. Most folks shoot long arms better than handguns anyway unless you tend to practice quite a bit.

I would agree with Jim that a Ruger AR or a S&W entry level AR would be a good first buy as the ammo is widely available and pretty cheap, it is a decent caliber for self defense and you can get into a hunting with simply another upper receiver such as .300 Blackout, the new Winchester Legend, 6.8 SPC or Grendel, etc. if you wish later. They are the Lego toy of the firearm world.

511 I forgot to mention that Alabama has lost it's no NICS status for CCW holders, something that I learned when I picked up the Beretta. It seems that some sheriffs in the Black Belt counties were issuing to prohibited persons so the ATF no longer trusts us. Annoying that.

Posted by: Grump928(C) at August 25, 2019 10:26 PM (yQpMk)

512 If one is interested some financial protections for carry, one can look up the armed citizens defense league. This group is mainly composed of trainers and probably their students who basically have something like the faith based health networks for helping to pay health costs. It is not exactly insurance but more like a mutual self help society. Their newsletter is free and has a lot of good stuff in it and they did have the back issues of it as well.

Rangemaster (Tom Givens) also has an excellent ccw lifestyle newsletter for his training program and he has trained a lot of folks in the dangerous Memphis TN area over the years. Think that all of his graduates (over sixty at last count) except the two that did not have a gun have went home alive after their trial by ordeal.

Just wanted to tell Andrew Branca if he is still here, appreciate both your extensive coverage of the Zimmerman trial via Legal Insurrection and your LOSD books/courses. Have 1st and 2nd editions and it contains good stuff for anyone contemplating the legal consequences of self defense.

514 257 186 ... Mark, Isn't the Henry single shot nice? Beautiful workmanship and damn accurate considering that I'm behind the trigger. I intend to put a scope on it eventually and see what kind of longer range accuracy I can get.

I find the Vaquero, mine is in 45 Colt, balances well but I need to use strict trigger discipline to get the most out of it. That basically means taking my time and being sure to use the tip of my index finger. If I don't, I end up putting most of the trigger finger through the trigger guard.
Posted by: JTB at August 25, 2019 08:34 PM (bmdz3)

I'm very happily surprised by the trigger on the Henry Single shot. Very clean. The break lever is a little stiff but it will loosen up in time.

On my Vaquero, I ended up having to 'choke up' on the grip. Seems sub-optimal but it put in good groups with my small, womanly hands. So if it's dumb but it works....

Armed Citizen Legal Defend Network (ACLDN). It's founded and run by great folks, and is well worth a look. Like all these programs, of course, it has its own strengths and weaknesses, and so will be the right fit for some people and not for others.
