"Today, I do not want to mourn the passing of the NY Times, but to jeer at the misshapen thing it has become. Or, perhaps, like so many things in the age of Trump, there is no 'becoming', it always was, and the mask has just been ripped off. They have gone public with who they really are, and they are taking American journalism down with them. "I am not sorry to see it go. I'm watching with unbated glee while it is slowly being destroyed by its current editors. Presumably, the owners are fine with this, because the editors still have their jobs and are not being thrown out on their ears and replaced with serious journalists. "Perhaps the death of the Times happened a long time ago. Perhaps it died the day that Times reporter Walter Duranty won a Pulitzer Prize for covering up The Holodomor in the 1930s Ukraine, and it wasn't returned when his perfidy became obvious to any serious observer. But with the leaked minutes of the meeting led by executive editor Dean Baquet instructing his staff to switch gears: they basically whiffed on the Russian collusion narrative (even though they didn't really do anything wrong, according to Baquet), so now they're going to concentrate on Trump's alleged racism. "In other words, the Russian collusion narrative was an abject failure, so let's try another one. But I thought journalism was about reporting the news, not determining in advance what the news is going to be. That's just... dishonest. "And they don't realize how they're destroying their brand. The NY Times used to be the "newspaper of record" even though it was mostly liberal. You could actually read around the bias and get news that wasn't fake. But no longer Now, it has degenerated into a parody of itself. It's not even up to the quality of Slate, Salon, or even the Huffington Post. It's nothing more a left-wing blog now, blue-state click bait, indistinguishable from the Daily Kos. Only even more obnoxious and shrill. When the history of these crazy years will be written by competent historians, it is not going to treat the NY Times kindly. It will probably be compared to the yellow journalism of the 19th century - and not favorably."

That's the power of a good actor in a lead role. There's a reason they're the tentpole of their series. Walking Dead was already starting to wane, but it just dropped off completely after they got rid of Rick. No matter how much I love Daryl, he's not Rick.

Gadot does have a pretty face, but she's way too skinny for my tastes. There was a scene in FF5 where she struts across a beach in a bikini and the view is looking at her walking away in slo-mo and her body looked like a 12-year-old boy's. She had kind of a Brie Larson backside. I didn't find it appealing at all.

Mr. MWR and I binged it when it first came out, because I adore Karl Urban and will watch anything with him in it, please and thank you. I really liked the first half or so, but then it became too formulaic and obvious. Religious fundamentalist is a closet homosexual? Been there, done that. Strong female character is a lesbian? Been there, done that. I basically gave up on it when Homelander straight up plagiarized Dubya's "I hear you, the world hears you" speech from 9/11.
I DID enjoy their version of Aquaman, though. I love how he went from a creep to a sympathetic figure by the end, with hints of being a villain in the future.
Still enjoyable, but a lot of the same ole, same ole.
Okay, review over.

Thankfully, I know nothing about comic books, and at this point, as a general movie fan, I'm sick to death of the MCU and DCU and all the rot that has become the factory churning "style" of comic book heroes.
So if he hates 'em for a different reason, he probably doesn't hate them more than I do.
It's a good show. Lots of strong action and plot twists, and as has been noted elsewhere, if superheroes really did exist, this is a much more realistic portrayal than anything we've seen by the standard issue, basic comic book movies.

I like its ambition and look, though it's a mess narratively. The whole prison planet sequence is probably my favorite thing in the movie, but it's also the most expendable. You could excise it pretty cleanly and all you'd be left with is, "Who's that chick?" at the end. That's a large budgetary and time investment to bring Jack back.

That's the thing though, the superheroes are MEANT to be cliches! They're superficial, marketed creations who only do what they do, because it serves a corporate purpose.
None of the superheroes are supposed to be admired. None of them. So when a religious wanker superhero turns out to be a closeted gay, of course he is! And when the tough chick turns out to be gay... of course she is!
The story isn't about them. It took me several episodes to realize the title, "The Boys," was not about the superheroes.

That movie is confused about what it wants to be. Undermining male chauvinist fantasy by creative male chauvinist fantasy?
I mostly object to it because I don't think the core concept works. Girl dreams psycho ward to be burlesque house (where we never actually see dancing). The dancing (that we never see) ends up being performances that are supposed to suggest the big fantasy sequences, and the fantasy sequences seem completely removed from the actual story. They feel more like demo reels or short films than part of the film as a whole.

And yes, Last Witchhunter was oddly good. The "beats" are off so when you watch it, it feels like something is wrong. Get past that and it is weirdly good.

They most certainly did not.
They gave anyone who could afford a printing press and the paper and the ink the right to run their press in any building they could afford to house it, without that printing press being seized by law enforcement. And that's damn well all they meant to protect.
They didn't intend to protect said owner the from being publicly ostracized, or refused tavern service, or humiliated in church, as a result of what said owner chose to print and distribute with that press, paper, and ink. Nor did they intend to give owner of said press special access to various events just because they could afford said press.
All they intended was that you or I could express our opinion, and distribute said opinion if we could afford the means, without retribution by government via law enforcement.
The media decided to call themselves "The Press". And it's bullshit. They're the media. Anybody can own a press. Or a web server.

The Book was "Eaters of the Dead". I liked it as well, I thought the sequence showing how he gradually figured out how to hear and speak their language was innovative, a think always glossed over by historical dramas, since it's a pain to deal with accurately. Also the entire setting of a Viking era society being defensive, rather than offensive.
There's a part where they think a fire-dragon is coming towards them, and as it gets close one says "that's not a dragon, that's cavalry!" and the other replies "I'd prefer if it was a dragon."

Pan's Labyrinth actually works. The "fantasies" (they actually occur, how else does she get out of the locked room at the end?) have to do with the story at hand. They are lent thematic weight due to the strength of their images. And they lead to the main character growing and changing.

Someone upthread mentioned The 13th Warrior, which is a great film that has almost nothing to do with its source material, a fantastic novel entitled Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton. If anyone made a faithful adaptation, it would be terrible. While it's a wonderful book, it would be completely unexciting onscreen.
