Do you like movies about gladiators?

Towards the end of the comments last week our pal NaCly Dog posted a good question:

Is it easy to fly with firearms as checked luggage?

And the answer is a resounding yes, in fact it's easy-peasy! Let's explore below, shall we?

Well, depending on your definition of "easy-peasy" that is.

I have flown all over the country with firearms in checked baggage, and seriously, it is no big deal with really only a couple additional steps in the regular airline check-in process. In fact, the first time I flew with a firearm I was a little surprised at how easy it really was.

Here are the TSA Rules regarding the transport of firearms. In a nutshell, guns go as checked baggage only and must be securely locked in a hard-sided container. I am a big fan of Pelican cases because they are durable as shit and protect my investment in the guns very well. In all the flights I've taken, I have never had any damage whatsoever when using them.

TIP: Buy an inexpensive electric carving knife to cut the Pelican foam for a custom fit. Trace an outline on the back side of the foam with a Sharpie and carve away. If you're careful it does a neat and professional job.

It's important to review your airline's rules well in advance on weapons as they can differ slightly among carriers. In the case of long guns you need to be aware of size restrictions and oversize fees, in particular. Also, since it's going as checked baggage, you might be charged for a second bag, so be prepared. Just go to the airline's website and read the rules, then print a copy to take to the airport. Having the airline's policies in hand may prove useful if you end up with a ticket agent who starts making up their own rules. Handguns are a little easier; all the previous rules apply but they can go inside another checked bag, eliminating additional fees if you're already checking a bag.

How about ammo?

Small arms ammunition up to .75 cal, and shotgun shells of any gauge, are subject to the same rules as firearms. Cartridges must be packed in a container designed to carry ammunition, such as the box it was sold in, or aftermarket cartridge boxes, and placed inside a locked hard-sided container. Ammo can be shipped inside the same locked container as the firearm if space allows. Airlines impose a weight limit on ammunition which is generally 11 pounds. Check with your airline on this.

So, what's the procedure at the airport, you ask?

When you arrive proceed directly to the ticket counter with a live agent rather than a ticket machine. Tell them who you are, where you are going, and that you have a weapon to declare. Some airlines will have you fill out a small card with your name and flight information that goes inside the case. Finish the check-in process and do not lose your claim check for the baggage. The agent will either escort or otherwise direct you to the TSA screening area who will almost certainly ask you to open the case so they can have a peek. Sometimes, they will swab the inside for explosive residue. As soon as they are done, lock the case and hand it over. I use the sturdiest padlocks I can find, but I also carry a couple of TSA approved toy locks in case they insist on those, and for that reason I also bring a handful of zip-ties so I can tell immediately at the destination baggage claim if the case has been opened.

Get on the airplane, fly around eating pretzels, and arrive at your destination.

Pee first, then go directly to baggage claim. I usually go to the baggage office, introduce myself, and let them know I'm expecting a firearm from Flight X (insert your flight number here). Next I go to the carousel to claim my regular checked baggage. The weapon will (should) be hand carried to the baggage office by a baggage handler, typically at the very end of the aircraft unloading process. By that time I'm usually back in the baggage office. If your shit isn't f'd up, slip the guy a quarter. They will want to see your ID and the claim ticket you didn't lose, and you're on your way.

For the return flight, simply repeat the process. Southwest Airlines is particularly gun friendly and I've also flown Delta Airlines a number of times with no problems. You may want to allow a little extra time at the airport, but that's about it. See? I told you it was easy!

Q: What happens if my flight is diverted to a hostile jurisdiction such as New York or New Jersey - will I go to jail?
A: I don't know, it's never happened to me.

Here's a skerry article from the NRA-ILA which states in part:

Special advisory for New York & New Jersey airports: Despite federal law that protects travelers, authorities at JFK, La Guardia, Newark, and Albany airports have been known to enforce state and local firearm laws against airline travelers who are passing through their jurisdictions. In some cases, even persons traveling in full compliance with federal law have been arrested or threatened with arrest. FOPA's protections have been substantially narrowed by court decisions in certain parts of the country, particularly in the Northeast. Persons traveling through New York and New Jersey airports may want to consider shipping their firearms to their final destinations rather than bringing them through airports in these jurisdictions.

I think the risk of an inadvertent stop in one of these jurisdictions is probably small, but if it's more likely based on your circumstances and itinerary, you may want to consider making other arrangements, or bring your attorney with you on the trip.

And finally our pal Yudhishthira's Dice posted a good tip with regard to the original question:

If you're flying with firearms, put all your valuables with the gun - TSA is required to lock/seal bags with weapons, and only supervisors can open them. I knew a guy who doesn't even shoot, who got a pistol just to pack with his pro video camera, after "They'll Steal Anything" pinched his old one.

This week our pal Jordan61 shows us the results of jerking the trigger versus a nice smooth squeeze.

This is one of my targets from a few months back. I went to turn it in to my instructor and she asked me what happened with the little guy to the right of the 6. I told her that was when I jerked the trigger instead of squeezing and letting it surprise me. She ended up keeping it so she could show her other students. I thought it would be fun to share.

Thanks Jordan61! It was very thoughtful of you to pull that one as an instructional example for us! Not many shooters would be willing to spoil those great groups with an intentionally errant shot for the benefit of others. You're a Great American!

6 I went to a gun store and handled the merchandise. I was very encouraged that there are quite a few concealed carry pieces on which my tiny finger can reach the trigger.

The S&W M&P 380 Shield EZ looks interesting. The slide is easy to rack.

12 Yesterday, in fact, I got the chance to shoot with Jordan61 and Nurse Ratchet and Jordan61's husband.

I had brought wheel guns (Ruger Vaquero in .44 and S&W Model 10 in .3

and my Ruger 1911 as well as my CZ P07, which was on carry duty that day.

I was trying to practice my one-handed shooting, because I suck at it. I REALLY suck shooting one handed with my revolvers.

I put in a good double action group on one target, using the Model 10, but it was harder than it was with the 1911.

Here are the problems, in addition to me sucking:
The S&W M10 doesn't not have a lot of recoil, but it is very common for my hand to slip on the wood grips, so my first shot is fine, the rest are high because I'm no longer gripping the revolver correctly.

The Ruger Vaquero was loaded with .44 special instead of magnum rounds. With all that shiny metal, the recoil was about the same as a .45 ACP. However the sights are more primitive on the Vaquero and I still don't have a good grip on damn thing, so I was stringing shots in a horizontal line. Sheesh. I had one good group, then the damn loading gate jammed. More on that later.

1911 one handed shots were the best, the trigger isn't as good as the Rock Island but it's getting better with use and I can make a nice tight group with it. I'm surprised and impressed.

More training needed, more practice. But it was a darn good day.

16 I am happy to report that Colt returned my 380 Mustang Pocketlite pistol. I took it to the range and it works great! I had returned it to them a month ago because it choked on every type of ammo I fed it. It now feeds essentially every ammo I tried (8 differing types/brands), without fail. (The one exception seems to be Aguila ammo - I don't know why the gun gags on that brand).Colt performed the work for FREE even though the pistol is more than 4 years past its warranty. Yay, Colt!

19 The New York/New Jersey part applies in particular to a passenger traveling lawfully through any of those airports, and their connecting flight is delayed, requiring the passenger to take temporary possession of their luggage, usually for overnight.

You take your checked baggage, and go to hotel, even on the airport property, and you now are illegally in possession of a prohibited firearm.

If delayed i NY/NJ...do NOT take possession of your luggage containing your firearm. Require the airline to retain possession of it, overnight if need be, and have them place it on your connecting flight without it ever being back in your physical possession during your delay.

in OG-107's and my State Marksmanship Team hat...

swapped planes in DFW, stood up to get off, so i could meet the container with our crate in it, and told the guy in front of me i had to get off the plane, so could i get by?

me: "but i'm the onlyu one transporting machine guns..."

i got up front real fast, then out the side door on a roll up staircase, and down on the tarmac.

Once, I had an M-forgery broken down and a Beretta 92 FS in the same case. The TSA guy asked, approvingly, if I was Secret Service.

36 Put a new leather sling on the M1 today. Have to get a new forend for the Mossberg 500 - the original one is waaay too loose and it's been agreed here many times, tighter is better. Might as well put a rail on it at the same time. And a flashlight, and a shot holder, etc.

They do not allow firearms on a boat.

I saw many places with no firearms placards.

In Honduras the banks had seriously armed guards. Saw a real purty 12 gauge Marinecote carried by a fully tacced out guard.

Sort of like...there is much antidotal evidence to suggest that the Maryland License Plate Readers at ALL the major choke-points are tied in to flag out of state vehicles registered to individuals who have some form of concealed carry permit in their home State.

Oddly enough, many of them get stopped for claimed equipment or speed checks.

I am not too sure when the increased placement of LPR's took place. But now, between LPR's and EZPass transducers getting pinged, it's not hard for metadata to really track where you were, and at what time in the State.

59 So, stuck loading gate on the Ruger Vaquero.

Me and other folks had bout about 48 round through it and I was noticing the gate was getting harder and harder to open. Until finally, the damn thing would NOT open at all.

Luckily, all I had in there were spent shell cases, but the gate would NOT open. And I didn't want to force it.

So I put some CLP on the hinges, emailed Ruger support for a RMA and left it over night.

Lo and behold, the next morning it opened up and I was able to unload it.

Next I'm going to take the cylinder out and detail clean around the hinge. Dunno why it jammed, the gun wasn't spotless but it was close to it.

Everything can jam. Everything can malfunction, sometimes in ways you just can't fix immediately.

Best argument for carrying more than one gun.

78 Gidday all. Air travel with guns hummmm. International air travel with guns! If you know how it works its all good. A mare if you do not. Bringing back some rifles from Merkca this year into a NZ city. Had the NZ permit to import, all good. Gun case (locked) checked in from LAX as a evil item containing evil guns as per normal. Red stickers and tickets everywhere. Separated from standard luggage as if it was plutonium fresh from a reactor. On arrival I informed NZ Customs that I was indeed importing evil guns, no worries await for po po to process, guns will go to Customs/po po via secret channel. Please wait out . OK sit on the naughty step awaiting arrival of po po.
After 40 minutes all other passengers having left the building, I spot a wee trolley dolly uplift an item from the luggage carousel,WTF, my item, evil guns. She starts to disappear into the distance struggling to lift a heavy case. I call this to the attention of the customs chick and she chases the trolley dolly, swearing at the lack of security by the airline (asshole Quantas BTW). Po po turn up very pleasant , all good can I carry your bags to the door sir? An hour of my life I will not recover.

83 I've flown many-a-time with firearms and never had any hassles. Of course, I was flying to gun-friendly jurisdictions, not totalitarian East Coast hellholes.

My planned range trip got canceled, which is a shame because I need to feed and burp the PC-9 which found its way into my safe a few days ago. I told my wife that it wasn't a new purchase; rather, the AR and the Glock must've had a baby.

Just kidding; she's a proper 'ette and approves of gun purchases.

85 I attended a class on using and maintaining AR rifles. Definitely worthwhile. Seeing a rifle field stripped, cleaned and lubed and reassembled made sense out of all the reading I had done. And I got some good instruction on stance and handling. An AR (a Ruger AR556 in this case) is so different from my older style guns. Yeah, I can make the thing go bang, but this was a real and valuable learning experience.

This varies from airline to airline. Some will require that rifle ammo be commercial 20 round box. An MTM ammo box or equivalent will not be allowed.

Likewise the ability to place ammo in the rifle case. It may or may not be allowed.

89 OK, range report. And it's a good 'un!
Took the 3 .22 rifles from last week and my Ruger SR-22 to the real range yesterday. Had the place to myself except for one couple there also doing .22. Turns out he's the champion aspirin shooter at the range; I didn't even know aspirin were dangerous!
Anyway, fine tuned rifles at 100, then pushed it out to 125, 150 and 200. Keeping copious notes, of course.
Got to talking with champ and he said nice things about me hitting targets with a factory10-22, a 1967 Sears single shot boltie and a 1970's Mossberg.
Then he set up steel at 150, freshly painted. Nine of them, from about six inches in diameter down to two, said, "Go to it."
First shot on 1-7, then two shots each on 8 and 9.
Very satisfying for an old fart who may not have 20/20 vision anymore

Ok, I'm done. Brag is over. But I did get a woodie.

I would say that my rifle case gets re-openned again, somewhere else, by someone else, about half the time after the initial TSA inspection that occurs when when I check the case.

The case may arrive with new locks or zip ties in place of the locks.

I continually remind myself that shooting skills are perishable. And just working through the manual of arms, for as many times as I've done it, needs to be practiced. Especially when you're going one-handed.

In this sorry excuse of a national airline, depending on flight number, you know what airframe you are getting on. That is important as if its a jet, scanned hand luggage , etc. On a puddle jumper, just stroll on, no checks. Don't tell anybody but there may have been occasion when restricted small bang sticks were in the cabin, with ammo. Shhhhh.

You can ship a rifle to yourself, but the UPS and FedEx ToS requires you to ship priority overnight, i.e. the most expensive way. And you will probably have to go to a hub to ship it. The retail locations won't accept guns. (In Mich anyway).

Guy came in at the end, had a black rifle something something. But it was chambered in 6 mm Creedmore and had a can on it. He had about 400 rounds through it and noticed that it was drifting a bit, so sighting in before going "up top" to the 1100 yard range (I am so jealous).
Anyway, he was shooting a 105 g. round and claiming that the 6 mm round is so flat that he's only putting 5.5 MOA of elevation, as compared to the 10-12 of other calibers.
OK, Mr. Five Yard Shooter, does this sound right?

144 Sunday morning is 100-200 yard day at the range for me. One of the guys had an AR chambered in 50BMG, It had about a 40" barrel with a muzzle brake the size of a juice can. He had it sighted in at 800 yards, for out in the West Desert, so he was letting his buddy guesstimate at 200. A really cool rifle, but I'm a long AR kind of guy. Perfect weather, great view, I love Sunday mornings.

Well, if he's pushing the round down the barrel at 3600 fps, it's possible, I guess. But, he's going through lots of barrels if he is.

(I've not done the math, so, grain of salt and all that. But, "flat shooting" generally equals "pushing the round downrange at very high velocity" if I'm not mistaken.)

Okay, now, hopefully, I get this up before weasel tells me how wrong I am.

148 A sad story, as I mentioned before, I'm building a Galil in 5.56 and I want it to be in the SAR style so I obtained a could of surplus wood handguards. One was in fair condition, seemingly armory made from maybe beech, the other was in good condition made of teak. I worked all week on steaming the dents out of the teak one and had it looking pretty darn good. So good I was congratulating myself but, there remained one deep scratch that was very slowly lifting. I read about using boiling water to raise the dents and since I had the not very pretty and much dented beech hardguard I tried the boiling water on it. It worked really great so I said to myself, let's try boiling the good one too. Well, long story short, teak does not appear to work the same as beech and though the remaining dents were much diminished after 5 minutes in the hot water, I could literally see the grip panels warping when I took it out. In a panic, I threw some wood and clamps on it to stop the warping from getting worse with some success.

Nonetheless, I had a nearly perfect handguard that is now just a good handguard because I got greedy and impatient.

Sad.

158 Weasel, Would you consider a thread on slings, how to attach and how to use for braced shooting? The class on the AR requested we use slings as a safety measure. (The last time I used a sling was when I tied some rope to my Daisy Red Ryder BB gun.) But in reading about them I saw how a sling can be used to steady the rifle. I don't know if it makes much difference in practical accuracy but seems like it should. I think it would be interesting to try it with a Garand for off hand target shooting.

159 I've got a Range Report this week (IDPA happens at a range, it totally counts):

The Renton IDPA match was yesterday, and I was there with my Kimber Pro Carry (a 1911 w/ 4" barrel, for those unfamiliar with Kimber products). We had relatively low attendance this time, so our squads were 6-8 people instead of 10-12 and it felt like the stages just flew by.

My ongoing goal is to increase my speed without losing too much accuracy. For yesterday's shooting I did pretty well with the first part of that, but less well on the second part. When I reach a certain speed, my suppressed flinch reflex sneaks back in and I start putting all my shots low. Fortunately this match didn't have any targets peering over top of no-shoot targets, so it only cost me some -1s instead of -5s.

There weren't any one-handed shots this match, but I'll try to practice some more of those for next month's match anyway.

177 Well here is a kinky one for air travel: "modern" high-tech air rifles, principally Anschutz and Steyr, have lovely small extreme high pressure air cylinders, which are typically charged from a larger tank at the range -- or in major competitions, right from a regulator on a large air compressor, the way scuba tanks are. And these cylinders are, from a TSA point of view, dangerous in and of themselves, apart from their function as part of a potential weapon.

There are a couple of HUGE junior olympic events at Colorado Springs, winter and spring, and just about every junior who hopes to either make a world cup team or get a shooting scholarship has to fly in and out, via Denver -- so TSA makes sure to put their dullest, slowest, least informed agents on duty during those periods. There are also major air events at Anniston, Fort Benning, and Camp Perry.

The damn cylinder has to be in a different container than the air rifle, naturally. And it has to be totally discharged, and visually inspectable to show this. In practice, this can mean that threaded caps on BOTH ends of the cylinder must be unscrewed in advance. Yes, I know that some cylinders are not threaded on both ends, and that is why you carry one of those USPS Priority Mail triangular SPR (small parcel roll) cartons with you, in case the agent plays dumb and you have to mail your cylinder home. Better than having it confiscated. German and Austrian air is expensive.

Yeah, I wonder about that too. Today was hot here and also humid. But me and the missus took a drive over the mountains in mid-July, and saw 6 or more inches of fresh snow.

Even this morning, it was overcast and cool. Warmed up later, but the weather patterns have been cool bad humid.

Did some CMP matches and they required sling work. Coolest thing was removing it from the rear attachment and cinching it around your bicep for prone.
It makes a tremendous amount of difference in steadiness and accuracy.
I was only taught the "hasty" sling method - elbow through, top of the wrist against the sling while gripping the fore end. Still good, but for hasty circumstances.

Aside from my Army days, I have never been to a real live gun range. I have always shot in the hills. There are rules, even there: Never fire across a road (even two-track dirt roads way the fuck up in the mountains); always make sure you have something to stop a stray round (hill, mound, etc), and do not shoot something you would not eat.

196 @158 JTB, you are going to love this. A sling, set up right, makes all the traditional mid-range rifles a whole different instrument. There's just no comparison to the control and feel, compared to just standing there in your socks, so to speak.

IMO the difference is a lot more with an '03 or a Garand than with an M4 style but, honest to gosh, it's almost like having a sandbag rest, compared to a bare hold. Definitely worth getting and practicing with. Something to look forward to!

Two to three hours on the range left me drenched and exhausted even though I drank plenty of water. I'm eager to try out my new flintlock pistol but it can wait for a while.

214 Southwest is great for flying with guns. I'd swear to you that (depending on your destination) they work to get them to where they need to be much faster. (For instance, when flying to Houston-Hobby, since they have many flights between there and Dallas Love Field, they will get the guns down there even before you leave the airport for Houston - and I say this because many times when arriving at Houston-Hobby the guns, lovingly secured in the Pelican case, are there even before my luggage gets there.)

One time, and only one time, Southwest botched my baggage with guns. I flew into Houston and planned on driving to FL from there (because when I was done on the weekend I was going to drive back to Houston and hang out there for a few days - the price was right to do such a trip). I arrived, and no bags were to be had. I discussed with the baggage claim personnel what to do next and they agreed to fly them to Pensacola as soon as they were found. Sure enough, 24 hours later, I was in Pensacola claiming my baggage, with my guns.

American flat out lost a firearm on my behalf, and though it was recovered five months later, I do not trust them enough to check firearms with them.

My experience is the exact opposite - in fact, I will state that CBSA has given me a much harder time entering Canada than any other country has given me entering their respective countries. No. Colorado now for over 20 years, but I am a Wyoming guy (Cody). You likely had a better experience than I did a couple weeks ago (Sturgis! *shakes fist*) That part of Wyoming is absolutely wonderful. My sister and her husband live in South Dakota, just up the hill from Newcastle. I really love that part of Wyoming.

They have some narrow laws regarding competitive shooting events, and they make an exception in that case for hollowpoint (rifle) ammunition. I went up there once and hated the range, and the guys running the match even more, so I never went back.

Emmie, you should see if they have a women's gun club near you. We have one here in Spokane that has a class called "1st Shots" and you can try different guns to see what works for you. I wish I would've done that instead of just picking something that fit my hand well and had a slide I could work easily.

Skip, the Walker Colt is MASSIVE. Well over 4 pounds unloaded IIRC. I believe they were considered the most powerful revolver unti the 357 magnum came along. The originals were issued in pairs and carried in holsters on the saddle.

I wouldn't dream of even trying to take guns into Canada. But seeing as you went to competitions there, I'm sure that helped (along with the paperwork).

My last visit to Canada meant that I had to cut through NY to get to ON via Buffalo on the road (Peace Bridge crossing) so I had no interest in traveling with guns on that basis alone.

When the baggage carousel stopped turning my rifle case had not appeared, but as I was at the claims counter a baggage handler walked up with my rifle. 346 OT. Just made my recipe from 190 last thread.

Homemade bruschetta:

Baguette loaf thin sliced.
Brush olive oil on one side and place under broiler.
When toasted, pull out, flip, brush oil on the other side and repeat.

When both sides are toasted, put a mixture of sun dried tomato pesto and chopped kalamata olives on the bread slices and top with shredded mozzarella cheese.

Put back under broiler until cheese melts. Enjoy.

349 One other thing about the Walker Colt. It doesn't have the retaining latch that later cap and Ball revolvers did. And the modern replicas lck them as well. The problem is the recoil can cause the loading lever to drop and jam the cylinder spin until it's lifted again. Don't know what, if anything, they did in the 1840s but todays shooters usually just tie some string around the lever and barrel to prevent the drop.

BTW, The Ruger Old Army, if you can find one, has the same capacity as the Walker and is made with modern steel so it's safer. But maximum loads are rarely as accurate as more modest ones.

There is a replica at the interpretive center at Fort Clatsop in Astoria. At least it was there 6 years ago.
It was damaged so they kept it in a back room. They let me hold it when I asked. It is just fiberglass but it was awesome to hold it. I saw it first in cub scouts way back when.

Astoria is a good place to go, lots of museums and such. I was toying with the idea of a Momee there.

Yes. I've got maybe seven inches and sixty pounds on her, and she's concealing with one of the holsters I use. One thing she works well is a loose button-down shirt, un-tucked, as a cover garment.

You're welcome! I used the hard plastic Pelican brand cases. The lighter ones that the gun is sold in is probably nowhere near sturdy enough.

I carried a full size 1911 to my in-laws for several years, kidney carry and they had no idea I was carrying until my SIL put her arm around my waist to give me a hug and said, loudly, "he's heeled." 392 TSA can't seem to figure out if you should be using TSA locks on your firearms case when you check it.

I've had them tell me both: It should use non-TSA locks that only you have they key to AND that it should use TSA accessible locks so they can inspect it.

Personally I go with the former solution and wait by the check-in counter while the case is passed through TSA inspection behind the conveyor screen.

Hasn't failed me yet.

Yes, got to the range - since it was my RO duty day [but also got to the indoor range for 5O rounds of .38O out of the CZ-83, just to practice, as that's what I carry as an RO during hot weather].

Nothing particularly new/interesting, gub wise, at the range this time [I mean new-to-me gunz brought by others], except for a .22/22WMR NAA derringer-style revolver a colleague brought - he uses it as his pocket-carry snake gun around the property [rural location - he's had to off 5 rattlers so far this summer].

And a Coast Guard group storing their target gear after all day training one range over watched and showed great interest, but they couldn't shoot my Garand, no time/too many guys.

I've seen just the "ping" cause a stoppage on half of the firing line, with smiles and approving head nods.

Inform the airline that they are to remain in possession of the bag until it reaches a destination where it is lawful for you to possess a gun, presumably your final destination. An airline, as a "common carrier" can get in no trouble for having the gun in NY or NJ or CA or wherever, but YOU certainly CAN. For this reason it is best to NOT pack your gun along with other stuff you will desperately need when you land, such as medications, travel documents, etc.

Now, to get on topic: I'll be picking up a Rock Island M1911 pattern in 10mm tomorrow or Tue. Order came in, so all I have to do is go pick it up. Dealer has a range, so I can shoot it right away.

I'll bring the S&W 610 I got a few weeks back, too. May as well bring along the Sig P227 and Sig 938 I picked up a few months ago. Haven't had time to shoot those either.

Starting Basic Marksmanship Instruction this week with Grandson the Elder this week, too. I have a Rascal for that. If he's ready, we'll shoot Sat.

The S&W M&P 380 Shield EZ looks interesting. The slide is easy to rack.

A lady-friend just got the 9mm version. We fired it yesterday (Sunday) to begin break-in. Nice gun - very nice. Small for my hand, but perfect for hers. Very solid, good balance, excellent action. She got a green-dot site installed by gun store. I recommend green over read as our eyes/brain register green-yellow faster/easier than red.

452 I live in NY and use JFK and LaGuardia. I have a standard Pelican case. It looks pretty obvious to everyone involved what's in it so I get a lot of looks. I have my cell number in big letters right next to the Master locks. TSA held up a flight, pulled me off the flight to open them because I used non-TSA locks and they wanted to look inside." I should have a contact number available." It is legal to use them. The Port Authority police had checked off on them. It is usually easy but time consuming. The cop needed normally takes a half hour to get there. Jet Blue does it in a sort of segregated section at JFK. American has you open the case basically in front of everyone.Jet Blue also sends your bag to oversized with the golf clubs, check there. Most cops are very cool with it. One told me before I opened the case if he sees a round in the chamber I would be arrested on the spot. I always put those " empty chamber " flags in each as I put them in the case. Typically you can load 11 lbs of ammunition. I never do. What they don't tell you is that it has to be boxed in the box you bought it. western airports like Boise could give a rat's ass. Nobody gives you a look and IIRC the local TSA on the spot checks it. a pleasure.

454 The last time I checked airline baggage was with two 10 mm Glocks in 2011 flying from East Central Michigan (MBS) to Houston and return. At that time they insisted that ammunition or loaded magazines be in a separate bag from handguns and that ammo in loaded magazines must be secure from popping out from the mag. I had magazine carriers for belt carry. They said that original manufacturer cardboard ammunition boxes in good condition were acceptable and after market plastic ammo boxes were also good. They were eager to use tape to hold ammunition carriers securely closed. Bags, suitcases, etc. had to be locked but if the locks were flimsy no one cared. I also had a USGI ammo can with a hasp welded on it and padlock but their instructions/training did not cover that. The small Michigan airport TSA was more competent with guns than the much larger Houston airport TSA.

Anyone with more recent experience care to comment.
Next time I fly I will call ahead, check websites, and allow extra time before boarding.
