Epstein Updates: No Video, No Check-Ins, No Cellmate

FoxNews: No one checked up on Epstein "for hours" before his death, contrary to policy.

For "several hours" leading up to his death, correctional officers hadn't checked in with Epstein -- despite being required to visit him every 30 minutes, a person familiar with the situation told Fox News.

Additionally, Epstein was supposed to have a cellmate. But the person who was assigned to share a cell with Epstein was transferred on Friday before the 66-year-old's death, according to the Post. It was not immediately clear why the cellmate was transferred nor why no one else was assigned to room with Epstein.

No video. Though this isn't due to a "glitch" in the video, as some claimed previously. It's just that the video cameras are not aimed at the interiors of the cells, but at the hallways outside them.

There's no surveillance video of the incident in which Jeffrey Epstein apparently hanged himself in a federal lockup in Lower Manhattan, law enforcement officials told The Post on Sunday.

Although there are cameras in the 9 South wing where the convicted pedophile was being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, they are trained on the areas outside the cells and not inside, according to sources familiar with the setup there.

...

Federal prison officials violated normal procedures by leaving Epstein, 66, alone without a cellmate and not checking on him every 30 minutes the night before he was found, according to a report Sunday.

This could possibly explain the guards' lack of attentiveness:

In addition, both of the guards overseeing the unit were working overtime, with one on his fifth straight day of extra hours and the other forced to remain on duty, the New York Times said.

More on the staffing problem:

The Metropolitan Correctional Center, also known as the MCC, has been wracked with a staffing shortage that has led to secretaries and case managers being pulled in to do the work of corrections officers, according to an official with the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Council of Prison Local 33.

The facility is down 38 corrections officers, the official said, forcing those on duty to work double and even triple shifts to fill in the gaps.

"I have not seen anything like this. It is ludicrous," the official said. "They are running these prisons with practically no staffing."

Meanwhile, what about Gislaine Maxwell and Prince Andrew?

As CBS News correspondent Holly Williams reports, documents unsealed on Friday contain allegations that Maxwell, a close acquaintance of Epstein's, played an "important role" in the late billionaire financier's "sexual abuse ring," directing an underage girl to have sex with Epstein and others. Maxwell strenuously denies the allegations. Her current whereabouts are unknown.

"There are multiple victims who claim that Ghislaine Maxwell was a personal participant in recruiting them for Jeffrey Epstein, that she assisted in the scheduling of appointments, multiple victims being delivered to Epstein on a daily basis over an extended period of time," attorney Jack Scarola, who has represented several of Epstein's alleged victims, told CBS News. "There are allegations that Miss Maxwell was an active participant in the sexual abuse."

...

The British-born socialite even founded a charitable environmental group.

Of course.

But Maxwell has also been described as a madam. Epstein was reportedly able to shield his alleged co-conspirators from prosecution with a 2007 plea deal. Jack Scarola says that included Ghislaine Maxwell.

...

Another famous Brit caught up in this scandal is Prince Andrew, one of Queen Elizabeth II's sons. A 2001 photo shows him with Epstein's alleged victim Virginia Giuffre, and Maxwell.

Update: Gislaine Maxwell had been negotiating with prosecutors for her testimony?

Ghislaine Maxwell was last night reported to be ready to co-operate with the American authorities in their ongoing investigation into Prince Andrew’s late friend Jeffrey Epstein.

...

Andrew had turned 40 in the first weeks of the Millennium and was in the throes of a midlife crisis, according to some royal observers. Divorced, teetotal, and piling on the pounds, he had few interests beyond his daughters, watching videos and golf.

Now, Miss Maxwell was to introduce him to another, strange and no doubt far more exciting world; that of a wealthy trans-Atlantic demi monde. And at its heart was her mysterious boyfriend-cum-patron and father figure, the multi-millionaire New York financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Private jets, VIP nightclubs and beach resorts were the necessary accoutrements for this social whirl. And with them came an endless supply of beautiful young women, often very young. Unfortunately, the prince has paid a high price for his brief sortie into this environment. He has become fixed as one of the characters in a celebrity paedophile sex scandal which will not go away.

There's no excuse for this, and no reason to buy that he somehow despite being put on suicide watch and in a cell specially designed to not let people kill themselves (there's a reason they take your belt away in prison, they are ALL designed to prevent suicide) this guy just managed to off himself anyway.

Its bullshit, and we're supposed to spoon it down with a smile on our faces, and ask for more.

I suspect Limbaugh was joking, BUT: This is an example of what happens in countries where the Government and the establishment have lost all credibility, due to years of acting badly. Once trust is lost, why believe anything that you hear? Why not believe that EVERYTHING you are told is a lie, and the safest assumption is that the Truth is always going to be the exact opposite of what anyone official says it is?

Trust is a very hard thing to build, and people have forgotten how crazy and chaotic society becomes once it is lost.

But he's got the same problem Trump has had ever since he became President - you take over a huge operation, with tens of thousands of employees, you want to think they are going to respect your authority, but how do you figure out which ones are loyal, and which ones are doing everything they can every day to sabotage you? It's bad enough when it's a minority of bad employees, but what if, in fact, there is a majority of your organization that is seeking to stymie you and betray you every single day? How do you get control?

87 72 I suspect the real reason AG Barr is so pissed is that he *knows* this was on his watch, and that it was his people who failed him here.

The old spoils system, where EVERYONE is fired, and new people hired, anytime an administration changes, really wasn't that bad of a system.

96 South Korea retaliated against Japan on Monday in a diplomatic and trade dispute between the two key American allies, deciding to remove its neighbor from its list of countries entitled to preferential treatment in trade.

South Korea's tit-for-tat action had been expected since Japan took a similar action against South Korea on Aug. 2. Still, the move provided Washington with fresh evidence that neither South Korea nor Japan would back down anytime soon, even though President Trump has urged them both to "sit down and get along with each other."

But there is a call to guard against "antagonistic nationalism."

After watching Obama leave 30+ Americans, including a US ambassador, in Libya to be killed by terrorists and DC/MSM shrug it off.

After numerous domestic terror attacks where the FBI declared, within an hour of the attack: NOT terrorism.

After watching Mueller and team's lawlessness (e.g., grabbing Cohens' legal files) and prosecuting a few selective DC swampies for things that a lot of DC swampies do (e.g. FARA violations).

Makes sense. I've been in a place where suicide seemed to be not just the only reasonable path, but the only possible one. Manipulating a guy like Epstein who thought he was home free only to find himself in a cell would be possible. And if he tried once, that would let the powers that be know that they were getting close.

It could have been just the guards too - maybe figuring that a rich powerful guy like him would skate again so they tacitly encouraged him to kill himself as a form of justice.

But certainly, Epstein should not have been allowed to be in a place where it was possible to kill himself, even if he wanted to.

158 Not buying the conspiracy theories. If powerful people wanted him dead, he would have been offed long before he was ever arrested. Much easier to do and much easier to make it look non-suspicious.

He killed himself. Enabled by the negligence and incompetence of his jailers.

But let me tell you how the Defense goes. These girls knew exactly what they were doing. They came back time and again voluntarily. They took the money and accoutrements. They went on exotic trips and were pretty well compensated. At some point they realized the real pay off would be in exposing this and the people involved. That's where we are now, especially with Epstein gone.

Epstein might have wanted to commit suicide, he was going away for life. So it isn't necessary to believe someone murdered him, but clearly someone helped him

Whitey bulger had worked closely with the FBI for years. Only some low level schmoe got punished. Shortly after whitey was caught someone got him transferred to a prison where they had someone waiting to murder him

So we *know* that there are people with the ability to arrange bad things to happen to people in our prisons...

163 From 2001 to 2007 there were 1386 suicides (all states).

Those stats include penitentiaries, not jail cells where someone is being held for trial where they are very carefully protected from killing themselves. And further, this guy had already tried to kill himself, so they put those guys in a different situation "suicide watch" which isn't literally watching but just a careful controlled situation.

Its a completely different situation than a pen.

Even paper can be made strong enough to do the job. Tear into strips and braid it.

If there's a doorknob, you just do a short noose and sit down with your back against the door (from one episode of The Wire).

If the cell has a separate bed, you stand it on end. Ready made gallows.

If the cell has unpadded concrete walls, you just bash your head into it (James Stockdale tried this method while in the Hanoi Hilton. The guards stopped him.)

A sufficiently motivated and creative prisoner can always find a way.

219 Under heightened pressure from lawmakers over the suicide death of accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, Attorney General William Barr said Monday that Epstein's alleged co-conspirators "should not rest easy" just because Epstein won't have his day in court.

"Let me assure you that case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein," Barr said in remarks to a law enforcement group in New Orleans on Monday. "Any co-conspirators should not rest easy. Victims deserve justice and will get it."

Barr additionally said he was "angered" about what he described as the Manhattan Correctional Center's "failure" to secure Epstein, and highlighted what he called "irregularities" in the MCC's system that have already surfaced in the early stages of the DOJ investigations.

221 Even if Epstein DID actually commit suicide, Occam's razor suggests it was ala Frank Pentangeli style (see Godfather II). Even in this scenario, Epstein's demise was CLEARLY arranged to occur via official action by the corrections facility staff. No camera, no suicide-watch, cell-mate removed, and.... Just like Frank Pentangeli.... Epstein's attorney was with him until 6:30 PM on the night he died.

You can't make this stuff up.

What's amazing to me is, any corrections facility staff involved MUST realize, of course, that by agreeing to do whatever, he/she also earned a death sentence. With the scrutiny of the FBI/OIG now, any evidence that would suggest a set-up must be destroyed in order to support the "gross incompetence" narrative, which is the BEST case scenario for his death.

One would hope that every single corrections facility employee is under 24/7 surveillance for the foreseeable future.

230 I normally hate conspiracy theories. Because, normally, they operate according to a sort of anti-Occam's-Razor in which the most complicated Rube Goldberg explanation for an observation is likely to be true. They are unfalsifiable. They require the world to operate according to an alternate set of rules and logic to those we can observe.

"Someone murdered Epstein" is not one of those. In this case, the non-conspiratorial explanation is the one that strains credulity, the one that, sure, *could* be possible but requires us to accept a string of very unlikely occurrences and make some really sketchy assumptions about human behavior.

Posted by: JPS at August 12, 2019 01:04 PM (5jH6v)

231 I just don't think Epstein committed suicide. Nothing about him strikes me as the type who WOULD commit suicide. He'd already skated on similar charges not long ago, he had deep pockets for top notch legal teams, some of the world's wealthiest and most powerful people in his back pocket, and a life that -- up til now -- allowed him to do just about anything he wanted without consequence. You don't just suddenly wake up one morning and go, "Oh shit, I'm going to the big house for the rest of my wretched life because I'm a prurient little shit," when you've lived most of your life cushioned by wealth and privilege. I've got to believe, even with the odds stacked against him, Epstein would have thought he was going to walk out of that prison a free man, just because of who he was.

That's why "suicide" feels so unlikely to me. The guy was too self-absorbed for suicide.

274 And apparently the ceilings in these cells are 9 feet high and utterly smooth. Nothing to hang yerself from.

No need for the ceiling. You can hang yourself from a sink perfectly well, half-sitting on the floor. It only takes circa a few pounds of pressure to close off the carotid artery. Even allowing for a bp spike of someone who is in extremis, say a systolic pressure of 200 mm Hg (up from the usual 120) less than 4 lbs. of pressure on the neck would occlude the carotid artery.

310 No need for the ceiling. You can hang yourself from a sink perfectly
well, half-sitting on the floor. It only takes circa a few pounds of
pressure to close off the carotid artery. Even allowing for a bp spike
of someone who is in extremis, say a systolic pressure of 200 mm Hg (up
from the usual 120) less than 4 lbs. of pressure on the neck would
occlude the carotid artery.

So you fit everyone on SW with a Fitbit and monitor them remotely. This isn't hard, if you're really interested in preventing suicide. I suspect they usually don't care that much, but in a case like this, simple self preservation would lead you to do a better job.

313 This is gonna get me flamed but I have no problem laying a substantial portion of the blame for this debacle on William Barr. Epstein was ultimately his responsibility. 316 The other downside of this Epstein event is that it perpetuates the dark pall that's been over Washington DC for decades-- namely, the fear of what would happen to anyone who exposes the Clintons' criminality. 330 What convinces smart, accomplished (?) persons to engage in this deviancy especially with so much on the line?

With someone who has no spiritual guidance the road is easier. Someone who is willing to do anything to get rich and get what they want will not likely have a lot of limits on what they do to make themselves happy.

And as noted here before, the hedonist paradox applies. When you're after that thrill from pleasure, the very thing which gives you joy fades the next few times, so you go even further to get that buzz, and it gets crazier and sicker and weirder as you go along.

Plus, if you're already sick in the head and find children somehow sexually attractive, and you're rich and powerful enough to carry it out, and you get away with it decade after decade, you're likely to get more and more bold about it.
