I was late to the party on this in previous thread. There are different applications for solar- you guys covered grid-tied pretty well, but there are also isolated systems that charge batteries and are not connected to the grid in any way. The batteries can then run a house or shop via an inverter (think UPS). This is a distinctly different configuration than most of the residential grid-tied systems you see in urban areas.

He has solar panels and batteries to be able to turn a few lights on in the evening and run some fans and whatnot.

I was just making this point yesterday to a friend (Gilroy is my backyard). At 19, this kid has spent well over half his life being told he's guilty, he's bad, he's racist, he's privileged, he's homophobic, and he'd better step aside for the dreamers.
We're in a huge agricultural area here - and it's getting mighty third world around these parts. If you don't know Spanish, you're already handicapped. It's weird to actually hear English in supermarkets.

I was looking into solar panels and, IIRC, my calculations put the cost per KwH at something around 40 cents initially (with me installing everything and the rosiest of weather forecasts for the next 10 years). Something like that, including battery life and all that shit for using 100% of the electricity in place. That is comparable with the cost of running a little generator for those few times when the electricity goes out for extended periods, but electricity off the grid is only around 8 cents/KwH, here.
I will still probably get a few panels some time in the near future (used ones for cheap) just for kicks. A little bit of everything ...

Getting solar panels to run a water heater is idiotic. Getting them to supply a family of four in sunny SoCal, not so much.
Rest assured, I did the calculations carefully indeed. Even without rate increases - which occur all the time - our break-even point was seven years (i.e., next year). With rate increases, we probably broke a year ago. (I haven't checked.)

Note, too, that a distinction must be drawn between solar collectors designed to heat water for domestic use, or pools, and solar voltaic panels designed to generate electricity. The former can often be quite cost-effective, and should last a long time, if made of durable materials.
The latter are rarely cost-effective vs utility power, but can be useful for emergency power, provided you have DC appliances and lights, or suitable inverters.

the only way it makes financial sense for the purchaser is if there's a mandate that allows the homeowner to sell surplus power back to the grid at subsidized rates. Sounds good in theory, I think it was Spain that tried to implement that a few years ago. Had to overturn the rule when it turned out that the Electric Companies were going bankrupt, because clever people were installing solar panel banks, and then running diesel powered light plants all night to shine on them so they could force the Electric Company to purchase high-priced power 24 hours a day.
It sounds like a plot line from some whacked out novel - but it really happened.

Don't install in on your roof and you have a decent idea. Back in the 70s installing water heating panels on rooftops was a thing. Then in 10 - 15 years they had to replace their shingles. Unexpected costs were incurred.

Enviornmentals don't seem to understand how the grid works. Output always has to match demand. It's a super complicated system that keeps that happening, with base load generation, peaking power plants, load following power plants...
It's hard enough to keep all of that working as designed without a bunch of assholes dumping power in to the grid at unpredictable times that the electric company has to buy from people, even though it's often only marginally more expensive / much only a marginal amount of additional fuel to run a peaking power plant at 100% output instead of, say, 85% output.

I've seen photos of a solar water heater built by some peasant in China out of PVC pipe and glass bottles. Had the whole thing covering the roof of his hut/hovel. Supposedly it worked great.

congrats, that's cool, and I guess you get security of extra power in case of brown outs or worse. SW is much more efficient for sun days than midwest, but I still might get some. We had the eco-nuts shut down our Meradosia coal plant ... but electric is only 12 cents, not 40 for daytime.
The grid tie thing can make the numbers work much better than using batteries. The off grid cost of batteries alone is probably 20 cents / kWh. I mostly like the idea of having power in a grid down situation ... kinda a prepper insurance thang. I could grid tie but they want more insurance and I'd lose my heat pump discount ... so will run it completely independent, a couple batteries but mostly for daytime use.
Sure the ideal is pure nuke power in refrigerator size boxes secured under concrete in every small town (wasn't Bill Gates working on that?) ... but instead they are closing plants and bagging cow farts ... No one expects the AOC inquisition. ha

I had solar hot water in Masswatuchetts 30 years ago - it was 3 black panels with black aluminum heatsink type vanes in it and a pump that circulated the water up into the panels and back into the tank.In winter we got a boost to 90 degrees F that we didn't have to heat up to for hot water. In summer I could shut the oil water heater off (forced hot water heating in the house). The only bad part was it didn't have a motor cut off and it would start cycling as soon as the sun came up even on a shitty cloudy day.

Looking back on it all, I don't feel like I missed anything that I regret, despite starting "late" and sometimes going "long" periods without.
The satisfaction added to that part of my life, by it's having being shared on each occasion with someone who also shared in my whole life, seems easily to outweigh any immediate physical satisfactions foregone.
