Apparently The Writers At Reason Can't See Reality Through The Haze Of Marijuana Smoke

I was mostly done with "Reason" a long while ago, but I am still on their email list and can't quite pull the trigger. Their occasional article about law enforcement overreach and the even less frequent shots at the current crop of socialists have kept me mildly interested. But the most recent edition has me scratching my head...

Conservative Nationalists, Not Immigrants, Are Having Trouble Assimilating in America

Given how zealously the American right has guarded America's core freedoms from foreigners, it is beyond ironic that it elected a president who tramples on them on a daily basis.
I won't bore you with a fisking of the article, because it is an incoherent fever dream of the Democrat party talking points attacking President Trump. Let us say that there is a lot of straw in this article.

It really is a view of an alternate universe. I don't know what color the sky is in their world, but it sure isn't blue.

For instance, they attack the president's use of tariffs as somehow un-American, which tells me that they are ignorant of the history of our country! "The American System" courtesy of Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, John Quincy Adams (and others), had as one of its main precepts..tariffs! But that was like more than 100 years ago dude...

It is sad that the most serious libertarian organization in the country can't look past their distaste for the president's bombast and examine what he is actually doing, rather than his public persona.

And the country is rushing headlong into legalizing marijuana everywhere?

Out here it's vagrants doing the murdering. Two recently in our small town, and one of the murders especially grisly: two shitheads broke into a woman's home and stabbed her 147 times.

But, you know, compassion. All they needed was one of the apartments LA is building for vagrants - at $300,000 a pop (I'm not making this up). Then they wouldn't have murdered her. But ...

42 Reason doesn't reflect much more than a viewpoint of largely pro-pot (but don't smoke it themselves) and be nice to liberals version of 'libertarianism.' Please don't impute what is now going on over there to the rest of us who support massive freedom.

I'm a libertarian. But I also realize that, good, bad, or otherwise, 90% of the country doesn't care about restraining spending, reforming entitlements, repealing most laws, etc. Politics isn't about purity -- it's about coalescing about what is really important. USA as a nation state, putting the interest of its citizenry first is important. That is a new concept and Trump and his supporters get it.

How you want to allocate taxes is secondary and I have no problem making common cause with more populist Trump supporters. I may not agree with them on some things, but I like and respect them when I meet them. I can't say that about the limousine liberals that I live around. The middle-class was more well to do (from
Lenin's view) than what today we consider the middle. or that is my
limited understanding. By standard of living terms though, today's poor
live as well or better than the old middle, at least in terms of modern
convenience. Not so much in social status and community influence,
perhaps.

So I guess to Lenin the middle was a threat ...
kinda sorta like the deplorable today? But today's working class
suffered when the elitists/globalists sacrificed the worker (and the
American labor standards, pollution standards, support of liberty
standards, anti-commie standards) ... to pad the global profiteering
(child Nike worker slaves).

That went hand in hand
(globalized markets, ramping up in the 80's) with the commie march
(Soviet engineered/funded) through our institutions begun in the 50's,
which included tearing down the family and the Christian church
(feminism, sex, drugs, Nation of Islam, etc).

D'ya think? Marxist propaganda, starting with St. Karl himself, rails endlessly against the "bourgeoisie."

Who do you think that is? That's the middle class. Fauxcahontas bleats about the middle class being hammered, but that is exactly what her ilk shoot for.

The reason? The really wealthy are too small in numbers to really matter. That's why "taxing the rich" is laughable; there aren't enough of them sufficiently rich to make any difference. Even if you confiscated every dime they had, it wouldn't run the country for very long.

Taxes are aimed at the middle class, because that's where the (average wealth X numbers) is at a maximum.

But, if you are like me, and you have patience, focus, determination, and endurance it enhances those qualities too. If you are not inherently lazy then pot cannot make you lazy. There is no such thing as "free trade." All trade is regulated. Trump is trying to restore the balance and for this the corporatists are trying to crush him.

Justin Amash's family makes its money importing Chinese tools. Trump is undermining that by re-aligning trade to benefit domestic manufactures. That's the real reason he hates Trump.

People like Jeff Flake and Justin Amash talked a great game also, but you know where their true loyalty was.

Libertarians also tend to focus in on the really trivial conservative issues in order to get their "street cred". Like if a conservative maybe wants to pass a tax credit for a religious charity, that's when Libertarians get "conservative" in order to bash a conservative.

Tucker also is against Bolton, and all the "neo-cons" leading us into war. But we have not gone to war ... and I think we have less war than under Obama (?). imo,

"Peace through Strength" worked for Reagan, and it can work now if we have competent men that present a strong front, which gives us more leverage in (peaceful) negotiation. We use tariffs and economic sanctions ... so it is Iran trying to provoke war, it would seem. Our problems stem more from when we "stand down" and give a few billion to Iran (for instance) if they will just delay their final bomb till Barry is out of office.

Report from the Union Pacific steam train exhibition (No 4014 'Big Boy')
in West Chicago, IL. The crowds just keep getting bigger (even in the
awful heat and humidity). Relatives told me that there is no parking at
all closer than 10 blocks and wait times for a tour of the passenger car
are several hours at least.

The joining of the two steam trains:

https://www.youtube.com/user/UnionPacificRailroad
I did a bunch of work for the restoration of CO 1309 by Western Maryland Scenic, which WOULD have been the largest operational steam loco until 4014 was completed. But, WMSRR mismanaged and grossly underestimated the size and scope of the job so badly, it's still not completed and will never have that title, even for a short period of time.
Certainly wasn't for lack of effort by a lot of great and talented people...

And so I now use something kind of like Scott Adams' "two movies" approach where I test whether it is just a mistake or foolishness or there's a pattern.

The Libertarians have consistently, always and forever directing all of their energy at the right. The left gets a mild "gosh, that's terrible" but it's always followed up with "the GOP is the real enemy though."

Heh. True.
In one of the debates in 2016, I forgot who it was, but someone twatted that the debate has turned into the comments section.

Which is fine, because comments section stuff can be good for breaking down issues to a sentence or two. But it's also bad because as shit gets heated people start saying things they shouldn't say.

211 The MSM tries its hardest to ignore the good economy. So Trump had to highlight it himself. And he does do that, but I think he should use twitter for pretty much nothing but highlighting the economy.

Again, with respect, I don't think you fully grasp the strategy: he's controlling the narrative. Whatever Trump tweets becomes the news story of the day. The Democrats are constantly back on their heels ginning up a response to yesterday's tweet when today's shows up.

Think of a boxer. "He should just save his energy and only deliver knockout blows, not waste his time throwing jabs."

Yet the jabs serve a crucial purpose: they let the boxer set the pace, measure the distance to his opponent, judge his reflexes, watch his reactions, and thereby set up the jab-jab-jab-knockout punches.

I think that that's Trump's strategy, to keep the Democrats always on the defensive, always reacting to him, and never getting enough breathing time to seize the initiative.

Did you see and hear the actual video of Cummings SCREAMING at the CPB official at the hearing? Cummings again set up the guy by asking why he was still "locking children up and removing them from their parents", and then interrupting the officials answer by once again SCREAMING at him if he thought that was what his job entails. When the official stated that BP is doing the best they can in a very diffic. That was all he was able to say when Cummings went off on the guy , screaming at the top of his lungs ,, "what if those were your children, c'mon man "

This congress asshole is responsible for the laws being written the way they are, the CBP has to either violate the law, or enforce it. Cummings is EXACTLY as Trump described him, someone who has bled Baltimore dry doing nothing but federal Democrat projects.

Congressional representatives are supposed to represent the constituents that put them there. What, pray tell, has Elijah Cummings done to improve Baltimore via Federal help?
Why let this pompous asshole stand up every day in front of the cameras, accuse Trump of being racist, corrupt, etc. scream at a public hearing at a BP official that he is an evil child kidnapper, and spend all his time demanding investigations, etc. and not point out the obvious about this guy.

But given the collapse of what served as a press/info system for this open society, and the political non-existence of the GOP as the natural surrogate/ally, I don't see any alternative.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at July 28, 2019 01:43 PM

Exactly. And as rhomboid stated at #136, this is not about rats or Baltimore. This is President Trump systematically retaliating against anyone who is slandering Border Patrol, ICE and USA immigration policy.

Notice the trend over the past few months. Nancy Pelosi slanders CBP/ICE, President Trump calls out the shit-in-the-streets cesspool that is SanFran.

"The Squad" slanders CBP/ICE, President Trump brings attention to the racism, anti-Semitism and anti-Americanism of "The Squad" members.

Now Elijah Cummings slanders CBP/ICE, President Trump calls out the fact that his district is a shithole and why is he wasting time slandering CBP/ICE when he should be focusing on his district.

It's a brilliant strategy. He has nothing to lose. He is defending the rule of law in America, defending Border Patrol officers and ICE agents and USA immigration policy --- his #1 policy issue --- and he's sending a message to Democrats: any Democrat who wants to slander CBP and ICE and immigration policy, President Trump will not only defend them, but also hit back at the utter failures these Democrats have in their cities.

345 The new thing is "de-policing," didn't you hear? See how well that's working in Chicago or NYC, where the police won't get out of their cars for "minor" crimes-- they know the city authorities don't have their back.

BLM & Antifa know the police have been neutered.

As for PROSECUTING criminals? How quaint! SOOOO 1970!

Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at July 28, 2019 01:53 PM

Yep, there's a phrase for that, right? "Soft bigotry of low expectations".

The problem is that "progressives" have decided that any criticism at all of someone who is Black is "racist". Does not matter what is the criticism or if the criticism is also regularly leveled at other people. "Progressives" will call it "racist".

That culture of "soft bigotry" needs to change before there will be any improvement in the Black community.

Are there really any people out there who would support Trump if he had a more genteel public persona?

Posted by: Jaqen H'ghar at July 28, 2019 02:30 PM (5fSr7)

359 Regarding libertarians - as someone who has at times politically identified as libertarian, classical liberal, and conservative, I can only say that there are opportunities for common cause, mainly in the idea of pursuing the goal of the minimal amount of federal government necessary to ensure maximum personal freedom. The three wings above may differ as to where the proper line is, but all should agree that the fed gov is far too powerful domestically.

I would add that the principle of non-aggression only ever made sense to me inside the well controlled (and policed) borders of the USA. It is a Hobbesian world out there, and applied internationally is a recipe for disaster.

The issue with the Big L Libertarians now is that they are dominated by the Libertines, as most small L libertarians are members of the Republican party. In other words, only the nutbags are left. The Rand Paul wing of the Republican party is valuable, and should not be written off. Power in all its forms and wielded by any imperfect human should be viewed skeptically whether in government, corporate, media, religion, or anywhere else.

Having said all of that, from a pragmatic standpoint, I have never voted for a democrat, have never sat out an election, and I can't imagine what would have to happen in this environment for that to change. The left (international and domestic) has always very obviously been enemy #1.

360 Just goes to show that Robert Conquest didn't go far enough, and it's because he misinterpreted the causes of what he observed. Even organizations that *are* explicitly right wing will still eventually become left wing. Conquest seemed to believe that this occurred naturally due to the nature of bureaucracies, and there is *some* truth to that, but it ignores the Long March Through the Institutions as a deliberate, active campaign to infiltrate and usurp *every* organization, *in particular* explicitly right wing ones. And the more important an institution is to the right wing, the more actively they try to subvert it - see the Roman Catholic Church (important, infiltrated) versus the Coptic Church (less important, much less infiltrated).

Reason was very important to the libertarian movement, so they captured it.

Posted by: Qwinn at July 28, 2019 02:43 PM (7wMd+)

361 Libertarianism is an unserious political philosphy, heavily dependent on lock-step universal acceptance of its precepts. There's only one demographic segment of the population that even cares. Libertarianism will not last past the traditional population of this country becoming a minority. Does anyone think the Third World peasants being imported by the left to replace the heritage population of this country gives a rat's lightly-seasoned ass about libertarian principles?

364 329 For Trump to lose, his opponent will have to flip [back] FL, MI, OH, WI, PA, or some sub-set thereof.

I'm Yogi Berra on predictions being hard, esp. about the future, but - given economic and other conditions in those places, even my post-Obama framework has trouble seeing that as plausible. Ceteris paribus.

Posted by: rhomboid at July 28, 2019 02:14 PM

I dunno. Michigan could be in play to flip back to Democrat.

The r3tard voters here just elected Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer (who's #1 priority seems to be to enact a $0.45 gas tax hike) and Democrat Congressman Elissa Slotkin in CD-08. CD-08 had been held by GOP since 2001.

And the 2018 election did not see any downturn for the state of Michigan economically. It was just a bombardment of Democrat propaganda against former GOP Governor Rick Snyder and the people of Michigan losing their damn minds.

So I'm unsure what will happen in 2020 election. John James is running for Senator again, so that is one bright spot. But he lost against Stab-me-now in 2016. Hoping he has better luck against Gary Peters.

But much of America is...they know a lot of Baltimore and similar are shitholes, but they're not quite prepared to go to the point of blaming, uh, black leadership.

Which is often the problem.

Trump should back this down a notch. Not give up on it, but just turn it down a notch.
Posted by: JEM at July 28, 2019 01:36 PM (8erNz)

Mr. Trump can't do a damn thing about it. Sorry, it's true. The people of the city of Baltimore can do themselves a great favor and vote in, oh, I don't know, COMPETENT leadership to go after what is ailing the city. And you know what's ailing the city? Not focusing on what cities SHOULD be focused on, and spending tax money as efficiently as possible.

Next up, MD voters could try to elect some COMPETENT leadership.

We don't live in a country with a unitary government.

371 Tariffs were how we originally funded the federal government until 1913 and the 16th amendment.

Those tariffs were applied on all imports across the board. They were not applied as a way to pick winners and losers and they were not a tool with which the president could flex his muscles in other countries in order to buy votes in this one.

It's exceedingly un-American to screw over the rest of us with a tax, just so a few steel foundry owners can get a little richer.

Oh, and they aren't. They're laying people off and closing locations, but at least it worked to strong-arm the chinks...oops, no, that's not really happening either.
