NYT: Mueller Didn't Do Much Work and Kept Short Hours

Now they tell us.

After his doddering performance. But for three years, he was a combination of Sgt. Rock and The Punisher, fighting the Cong with one hand and Mafia hoods with the other, and banging out bills of indictment with his prehensile yet girthy manhood.

Soon after the special counsel's office opened in 2017, some aides noticed that Robert S. Mueller III kept noticeably shorter hours than he had as F.B.I. director, when he showed up at the bureau daily at 6 a.m. and often worked nights.

He seemed to cede substantial responsibility to his top deputies, including Aaron Zebley, who managed day-to-day operations and often reported on the investigation's progress up the chain in the Justice Department. As negotiations with President Trump's lawyers about interviewing him dragged on, for example, Mr. Mueller took part less and less, according to people familiar with how the office worked.

That hands-off style was on display Wednesday when Mr. Mueller testified for about seven hours before two House committees. Once famous for his laserlike focus, Mr. Mueller, who will turn 75 next month, seemed hesitant about the facts in his own 448-page report. He struggled at one point to come up with the word "conspiracy."

Whoops.

Whoopsie!

...

[H]e was unmistakably shaky. Roughly 15 times, he asked for a question to be repeated. He repeatedly said, "If it's from the report, yes, I support it" -- a line that seemed to suggest that he did not know what the report actually said. He seemed to struggle to complete his sentences, and not always because he had been interrupted.

...

Had Mr. Mueller delivered a commanding performance -- even if he said little -- he might have cemented that impression. Instead he may have ignited a whole new set of questions about whether he was too old for the job he took on, whether he delegated too many decisions to his top deputies, and whether he was reluctant to testify because he was not up to it.

In fact, those suspicions already had some currency. In Senate testimony this year, Attorney General William P. Barr suggested that in a March 5 meeting, Mr. Mueller did not clearly articulate his reasoning about why he declined to decide whether President Trump had committed a prosecutable crime.

...

But what has dribbled out suggests that Mr. Mueller's wobbly performance might not have come as a surprise to his subordinates.

The calendars of one of the team's top prosecutors, Andrew Weissmann, suggest that he met infrequently with Mr. Mueller, except for daily 5 p.m. meeting, which typically lasted 45 minutes.

Instead, the calendars cite Mr. Zebley's initials 111 times, often next to "team leader" meetings, suggesting he may have led them.

YEARS,

are of course attempting to provide cover for Mueller, but not really for Mueller -- they're providing cover for themselves, having not only insisted that Mueller was some kind of living god, but having viciously attacked anyone who offered the slightest doubt about him.

Take Jonah Goldberg -- please.

irst, he retreated, as usual, to the pillows-and-Play-Doh comfort of Safe Space of just blabbering Orangemanbadorangemanbad when confronted with evidence that his worldview talks like a fag and is totally retarded.

Then he got some criticism, even the most trifling and harmless of which he felt the need to punch back at.

He knocks Trump all day but he certainly seems to be emulating Trump's rule about always hitting back, huh?

Then, of course, he started damselling today about all the Jonah and the Whale "hate" he'd gotten:

And how did "pushing Twitter away and going to bed" go for him?

Well, it went about as well for him as it usually goes for bitter, angry lonely Twitter Addicts. By which I mean: He kept tweeting.

Twitter was so toxic I just had to completely remove myself from it. Except that this needed to be said:

I just totally had to get out of this Hate Cyclone and Find Some Center.

Oh, but I had to comment on a Jeet Heer conspiracy theory before I left:

Man, there was so much Hate coming at me on Twitter I just had to get away from the negativity. But you know, I did want to tweet about the movie I was watching.

By the way, check this out:

See? Did you think I was lying about that?

I should point out that some people I know think that the "Fight me" guy was actually goofing on Jonah, but even so, that would show that a lot of people have picked up on the constant shman-on-shman* "Fight Me" cyberflirting.

Gee. Now why was that, Einstein?

And that the other of those might undermine his attributed authority as an independent inspector? Just spit-ballin' here.

109 The simplest explanation seems to be the most likely. Mueller had no idea what the report said because he didn't write it and probably didn't read much of it.

He was initially adamant about not testifying and had to be subpoenaed. He couldn't explain to his boss why he didn't make a recommendation on obstruction. He was clearly lost multiple times yesterday when asked about specific points the were in the report.

As someone who spent a significant part of his scholastic career not doing the homework assignment and then winging it in class I can spot someone who doesn't know what the material said a mile away.

Ans: Because the replacement might just look closely at the people assigned and get rid of them due to conflicts of interest. The replacement might insist on actually being in charge and direct a neutral investigation. The replacement might actually *be* honest and not a partisan Clintonite hack. And that wouldn't do.

Pre 2016 conservatism was to espouse theoretical "fiscal conservatism", throw a few rhetorical bones to the SoCons, and then do neither when actually in power because you don't want to expend political capital that could be better spent getting a 1/2 or 1/10 of a percentage decrease in the marginal tax rates for global corporations.

Ans: Because the replacement might just look closely at the people
assigned and get rid of them due to conflicts of interest. The
replacement might insist on actually being in charge and direct a
neutral investigation. The replacement might actually *be* honest and
not a partisan Clintonite hack. And that wouldn't do.

Yep. We have 50 state AGs....dozens of high level State Attorneys and FBI investigators...and we had to choose someone who had worked for Whitey Bulger, screwed up every major investigation he was part of (hello Richard Jewell!), and had his bones made when he let Clinton off the hook for taking a bribe from Mark Rich.

245 How sad that Goldberg finds his only solace in defaulting to his woobie argument that the ORANGEMANBAD is Bad and Mueller is a better person because he didn't launch any ad hominem attacks during two congressional hearings. LOL, what a fucking moron, the only way the hearing could have been any worse for Dems and Mueller is if Mueller had shown personal animus towards the President.

If Mueller had shown personal animus towards Trump on national television he probably would have exposed himself to criminal charges or at least being disbarred! Not to mention the political ramifications. Jonah is quite the cheap date for deep state hacks.

Two jokes among baseball guys.

1. When someone pusses out, pulls his head away and just swipes at a hot shot hit at him, the other guys yell "Ole!"

2. When someone does the above and actually catches the ball, the other guys tell him, "When you look in your glove, poker face. Do NOT show shock or surprise. Act like you knew all along the ball was there."

Posted by: WitchDoktor, as if anyone gives a shit at July 25, 2019 01:05 PM (TB7HE)

Too complicated, and so deprecated by Occam's Razor. After the big buildup, they could hardly cancel the hearing. They probably just hoped he'd get by, if necessary carried by the Democrat members of the committee. (Plus, he may have been better in the rehearsals, and they didn't realize he was about to come across as whacked out in the hearing.)

At 0-2 I got a low and outside fastball that I was finally able to get some stick on, but way late. Single down the right field line (as a right handed batter). I disagree. Zoe had been running around on for almost a year before that deplatforming others, getting people fired and cheering on doxxing and harassment of her enemies. I think most people assume that it was just shady behind the scenes stuff that was made public, but no; she had been a public figure among the gaming community for a while, crushing everyone that dared question her feminist gamer credentials.

While I think doxxing is bad in most circumstances, if you're going to run around online with an SJW mob wrecking havoc at your behest, it's damned near inevitable.

396 Another possibility: he wasn't familiar with the guts of the report because he'd had little to do with it.

A friend was an expert witness in a case where the opposing expert witness was the prominent (and very much published) head of a European science department.

At one point the opposing expert witness asserted something in deposition, and the guy taking his deposition locked him in on the assertion, then produced one of the guy's publications that made the exact opposite assertion. The guy stuttered and stumbled with embarrassment, and the deposing lawyer later couldn't believe the guy didn't know what he himself had published.

But I was not surprised. In the European system, the "professor" - there's only one, the head of department - is a monarch. Every paper that comes out of his department lists him as an author. Which is why such guys have 1000 publications, most of which they've never read, or ever even been aware of.

I suspect that that's the case with Mueller. He may well have never read the entire report, and let's face it, one reading would probably not suffice to recall random points in detail.

Looking back, I think the "Tea Party" movement was a lot of charlatans and hucksters.

I also don't think it resonated like Trump's platform has.

I see winning coalition with Trump Conservative Populism, the Tea Party was more of a Koch Bros creation.

They kept mueller away from everyone. From his bosses at Justice, from the press, from the house members. He was isolated so nobody could find out he was a drooling figurehead.

482 It's easy to forgive old and feeble if you accept limitations. You cannot continue to do things that are low beyond your capacity, be it performing surgery, driving a vehicle (feeble pilot, anyone?), or running a sensitive investigation. That is unforgivable. 488 There is a certain mental discipline that can only be developed by overcoming the reptilian brain. It comes from hanging in the box, or stepping off of the rappelling tower or high dive board, or standing still in the gas chamber when your brain is insisting you are going to die if you don't leave RIGHT NOW! It shows a man himself a bit, I think.

489 469 If any of you wander over to Breitbart today, check out Nolte's article on Mueller's testimony. He makes a pretty good argument that it was not senility, but the dodge of a guilty man. Not sure I agree 100%, but certainly am not ruling out the power of "and."

It was a dodge. Mueller ain't going to fall on his sword for this level of stupid. I almost believe Mueller let the Leftist Crazies of SDNY hang themselves. 495 Mueller yesterday reminded me of a character in an episode of Law and Order SVU: an author who was about 80 was in the middle of a squabble between his wife (something like number 4) and his two daughters.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at July 25, 2019 12:32 PM (M9ntN)

Simple, Trump isn't a drunk like Mueller and Hillary (71), and hasn't suffered brain damage like Biden (brain aneurysm) and Hillary (massive concussion).

Biden is on anti seizure meds (anybody who has had brain surgery will be on them for the rest of their lives because they are very likely to have seizures) and those meds can make you seem like you are drunk if the levels get out of whack, which is very easy to happen. Hillary when she "overheated" in 70 degree weather had a seizure, they were able to load her up on anti seizure meds, stabilize her, and send her out to greet the little girl on the street.

Trump doesn't drink, hasn't had a brain injury, and for being a big guy seems to be in pretty good physical health. Why? Probably because he's the type of guy that will take the steps to go up a few flights of steps instead of the elevator, and he used to visit construction sites so he probably walked quite a bit.

Posted by: Blago

A lot of the people in the new coalition Trump built (the Obama/Trump voters mainly) are not very conservative on those issues either. Trump explicitly ran on not touching Medicare and Social Security. I understood that when I voted for Trump. I have judged that for the time being my fiscal conservatism is going to have to take a backseat to accommodating the new members of the coalition. As Ace points out it is not 2003 and my first priority is to continue to give the Dems as little power as possible until they can regain sanity. If that means big deficits then big deficits it is.
