Oh Goody! Another Debt-Busting Budget Deal, This Time Courtesy Of The Usual Suspects: Everyone In DC

This is one of the things that worried me about President Trump; his comfort with huge amounts of debt. That's the way real estate works, and he was better than most at playing the game. At first I entertained the naive hope that with a booming economy and even a cursory attempt at budget control we would be able to grow our way out of the spiraling deficits that have become the new normal.

Clearly that isn't going to happen: Hey...nobody said I was smart.

'Indistinguishable from Democrats': Daniel Horowitz tells Mark Levin what's behind Republicans' debt-exploding budget deal

Horowitz explained that the current spending levels are the result of the budget deals that congressional Republicans cut during the last session of Congress, “and now they’re looking for a repeat performance” in the current spending debate. They appear ready to hand Speaker Nancy Pelosi a debt-exploding deal that suspends the debt limit, busts spending caps, and “give away the president’s leverage on the border.”
Read the article...it's the usual gang of craven and shortsighted politicians who simply don't care about the future financial health of the country. Government spending has become so ridiculous that I wonder whether they are still trying to buy votes! How many voters actually pull the lever for the incumbent because he voted for some pork? Spending is out of control on all fronts, so how do people recognize directed spending vs. the background abomination that is the federal budget?

It reminds me of watching a chain smoker; lighting one cigarette from the stub of the previous one, never enjoying it but driven by his addiction to the process.

6 This subject is why I wonder why we have Federal Taxes. What's the point when we finance most of the budget anyway? I know that politicos use taxes and subsidies as a way to control behavior, but in the aggregate if debt doesn't matter neither should revenue.

16 Part of the problem I think is we've had people screaming about the debt for 30 years. Ross Perot got 20% of the vote twice on the matter. People kind of shrug their shoulders now. And anyone who points out that the debt situation is unsustainable is tuned out by the masses because they've been hearing about a debt bomb all their lives and it has never happened.

Posted by: Lurking Lurker at July 21, 2019 12:27 PM (FiUMj)

17 Meh, the debt is never going to decrease, and no one outside of a small percentage of white men - whom no one is going to listen to - are ever going to ask for government spending to decrease, or even to stop *increasing* quite so fast.

Unfunded liabilities will eventually become never-paid-out "we took the liberty of bullshitting you" non-liabilities, and the tears will be delicious.

The only question is which factor breaks up the US first: financial collapse, or demographic balkanization. Either way, figure 15 years, maybe 20 tops. Possibly much less.

20 My one small thought about the deficit/national debt is that it will require something like "the military base closing commission" to address the problem. Remember that?

It took a bipartisan buy-in, & delegation of Congressional authority to the commission, to make VERY unpopular decisions. Once the commission made its decisions to close military bases, Congress could've overridden the commission, but did not.

To do something like that again, only on a vastly bigger scale, a crisis would probably be a necessary condition precedent.

It worked for Robert Byrd. I'm not sure how many are "craven and shortsighted". Many are doing what they went to Washington to do. And they get praised for "governing" and "doing the people's business" and crap like that.

Of course, there are turncoats, too. Paul Ryan first arose as someone who would fight it. That worked great, didn't it? In a sense, we're better off with McTurtle, who at least knows what he's doing.

The best thing we could do is adopt the Shirley Jackson solution. An annual lottery of the 535 members of the two houses. The one chosen will be stoned by taxpayers on April 15th, every year. Might not actually fix anything, but it'd be fun.

Yeah. Rome fell.

Once you realize that in any country that has a debt based financial system you can never pay off the debt, you can come to the understanding that the entire purpose of the Federal Government and, now, the State Governments is to borrow more money into existence. The Romans did this, but they were able to go out an conquer other entities so they could just steal the interest from them. We're more "woke" than the Romans, so we just place the debt onto the peasants. The system will default some day. The scum in DC and your State Capitols are just trying to time it so they're no longer there when the SHTF. Maybe that's why we're seeing so many retirements?

No, that's only the way your elected representatives prefer. They are more beholden to the private entities that finance the debt than they are to you. The only way out is to take back control of the government, hoping that the military and police forces don't decide to support the financiers (like the Soviet military), and repudiate the debt. This is the main reason they want to outlaw your right to bear arms. And arm bears.

That Trump says..

So, I want a 10% cut in budgets plus 10% personnel cut across all federal departments effective immediately.

To make it fair, we'll begin with the most junior personnel.

Oh, and I get my wall."

That would be stab at fiscal responsibility and I think most people would go along with that.

Plus...BONUS! The 10% personnel cut of the most junior would almost certainly scoop most, if not all, of the Obama personnel out of the gov't.

Win win win.

But, I'm afraid, it's all just a beautiful dream.

The economy does an occasional oopsie, and when it does, some of the haves will collapse entirely, many will see a noticeable drop in their overall wealth profile, and the rest will go on just as before, with at most a temporary inconvenience.

The have-nots, well, some of them will die miserable horrible deaths, and many of them will suffer catastrophic drops in their overall wealth and well-being, and some may join us in the sky chambers above, having learned how to game the system.

So it all works out.

When you die, you will be mourned by some, your death will be a welcome relief to others, and the vast majority of the world will go on as if nothing of any significance happened. Because it didn't.

This is the pervasive mindset of the rich and powerful who make most of the decisions as to which levers get pushed and pulled.

125 Reason #342 Voting is not going to solve this problem.

Posted by: San Franpsycho at July 21, 2019 01:15 PM (EZebt)

126 A preponderance of people get their money from the government, be it entitlements, financial assistance, direct government employment, government contracting or providing services that are paid for by the government.

This is why the system can and never will work at this point,

I can't pay a government worker $100, tax back $30 of it and continue to pay the $100 again.

The ratio is now, and has been for a while, such that the earnings of the private sector are no longer sufficient to bridge the gap to overcome this.

In my estimation, you need 75% of the country operating in a private economy free from government compensation in order to tax creates wealth enough to fund the other 25% employed in the public sector.

This will never happen. Ever.

So the question becomes: Is there ever a maximum borrowing limit for the federal government?

That answer is no.

So then the next question is: What happens when the balance sheets are such that the rules of accounting no longer apply?

I don't know, but I suspect it will be chaotic when the illusion of fiat currency as having any intrinsic value is broken.

I think many states are already banking on that outcome. States with huge debt loads are purchasing infrastructure at incredible levels ahead of an impending dollar crash, at which point their debt will mean nothing, but the infrastructure acquisition will already be realized.

Problem is, people don't that to happen on both sides of the aisle and it probably would have some major short term pain economically.

This is correct. It explains the current voting patterns of the "collar counties" of southeastern PA, who have very rapidly turned purple/blue from solid red, and who are very happy with RINO (or just Dem) governance all of a sudden. Our high standard of living is either partly or entirely dependent on govt - even in the "private sectors" of banking, credit, and pharma.

Not sure if its possible, but the only potential fix is to grow the private sector enough. It's a tough battle.

We (wife and I) won our personal war on poverty some time ago.

We did it by practicing all the ways to save money possible.

We aren't rich, just comfortable--or so our financial advisor tells us. At least we won't be waiting by the mailbox for the SS check.

All this was done (from MY standpoint , not wife's) with out factoring SS into retirement. Basically, I don't need it.

I still receive it, since I was enrolled by my parents long before I ever worked. I mean to take it until I reach my total contribution into the fund. Sort of a tax rebate if you will.

It'll become a donation after that, to what is undecided right now.

Exactly right. The cause is the Great Liberal Infestation that began after the ill-named "summer of love." The infestation really kicked into high gear in the 70s, when the state first elected Jerry Brown, and went downhill from there.

It used to be commonplace for people to ask others where they were from, and when they'd moved here. That is where the problem came from.

Not joking, for example that could be a perfect opportunity to strip all of the universities of their endowments, when it happens. And the biggest reason is that the schools have all the troops on the ground.

Our local Board of Ed routinely violates the spirit, if not the letter of the law prohibiting public funds for electioneering, by sending out all kinds of blast emails to every parent in the District about how necessary the new budget is. That, and the teachers all vote at 105% participation in favor of the budget in generally low turnout elections.

If only there were some kind of political organization, call it a "party" that would take the cause of taxpayers and maybe even organize some counter messaging and a voter turnout campaign.

As long as we have a political situation that is balanced on a 50/50 knifes edge, the one most willing to spend public money in susceptible areas wins. Trump has to spend like a drunken sailor to stay in office.

Cutting budgets is the luxury of a government with 75% support or better. Until we achieve that, we cannot do it.

and if we cannot ever do it, well chalk that up to one of the prime reasons that Democracy has a lot of things in its favor, but it is not a sustainable form of government over the long run.

The amount of greed and waste within the Texas Public School Cartel is amazing.

The state lottery is allegedly used for schools, one-half of the state gasoline tax is sent to the schools, the largest by over 50% portion of the property tax is funneled to the schools.

When Rick Perry's administration grew the "Rainy Day Fund" the school unions treated it as an uncashed lottery ticket and demanded that they get massive raises just because the money existed.

The pension and the school funding problem is so out of control now, if all of the schools closed forever and every teacher paid through their contract, the bond servicing and the pensions would still require another forty years of taxes at current rates to be collected.

Its a total complete Communist racket that can't even be burned down by fire.

It is intended to be a foundation to build on. It was designed to pay better to lower income people. Means testing would actually be redundant.

The benefit is figured by averaging your salary for the 35 highest years of earnings after indexing for inflation.

The monthly average is broken into three parts. For the first tier you get 90 percent. For the second tier, 32 percent. For anything above that, 15 percent. Lower income gets a higher rate of return.

265 And the school votes are always sold as "the average home owner will only pay $18 more a year". And come on, isn't $18 worth it to have good schools?

Yeah $18 more a year on top of the $21 from last year and the $35 from the year before that and the $65 from the year before that, and the $216 from the special bond of 5 years ago, etc.

But your home schooled and private schooled kids can't use any of those facilities, even though the families are paying through confiscatory levels of taxation for the use of it - for the children - just not yours unless you subject them to the abuse of the government school cartels.

I think people are willfully ignorant about teacher salaries too. They still think teachers are getting paid $18K per year, and have to buy all their own crayons and glue sticks.

What utter bullshit.

And the media is already starting up on that line of tripe, the stories showing how teachers are doing all this scrambling around to secure supplies for the kiddies?

Good grief... as I am fond of saying, anyone who thinks the human condition has improved in any measurable way in the past... oh, say 6000 years, isn't really paying attention to the big picture. We're still as pig ignorant as ever.

Every month is different incentives from different manufacturers. It can vary by several thousand dollars between June and July for example or between March and April.

I bought my truck a couple of years ago for almost 30% off MSRP since I hit a sweet spot of incentive bonanza. It's just in time pricing, certain model didn't sell well the previous month, those units need to move the next month and will be heavily discounted.

The end of the month thing is kind of a myth.

A friend of mine was a VP of a major bank who lost his job in a reshuffle, and was old enough he had trouble finding another job. (You know those age discrimination laws? Yeah. Good one.)

His brother and sister had become teachers, and were in Fat City, so late in life he clawed his way into becoming a math teacher (he'd been a math major). He was stuck in a shitty neighborhood, but stuck it out and retired with a hefty pension.

So I don't want to hear about how teachers are underpaid. If you have trouble recruiting suitably qualified people, THEN you're underpaying. But if you have to fight back qualified applicants with a baseball bat, you are most definitely NOT underpaying.

The cousin was trying to implement education for the children of those who worked the plantation. His biggest impediment? The parents saw no point in it. They wanted Juan and Lupe to go to work as soon as they were out of diapers.

So that cultural perspective is part of the problem.

313 My grandfather would say , 'I paid for your parents education, they should pay for yours.'

So lets do some of the maths.

Say a teacher "works" for thirty years then gets that Fat Pension.

Class room size is twenty kids. K-12 is thirteen years. To keep it simple, the teacher officiates the same kennel of kids year after year until they graduate. That is just over two litters of children in a single career. so what? Roughly 45 kids received any benefit from that teacher.

That teacher pulls $100k in benefits annually, live another thirty-forty years in retirement at a reduced but COLA matching increasing rate. We are looking at no less than $4.5 million spread across forty five people. Each of those kids needs to pony up $100k just for the teacher alone. Probably quadruple that number to cover the facilities, operation, admin and maintenance costs, the stadiums, the band equipment, the buses, the usual graft, fraud and corruption.

All for an "education" that doesn't include identifying the three branches of government, how to balance a checkbook, or able to tell the difference between a biological man and a woman.

I'm in tech and had over four competing offers at one time a month ago. That isn't "come in for an interview" that is bona fide "here is a dollar amount, when can you start?"

327 Studies show that a teacher who is paid 18% more teaches 18% better.

You know the old saw about everyone is most conservative about what they themselves know best? It seems to be the opposite for teachers I have known. This is only my experience, but every one is a blue eyed zealot, Jonestown kool aid drinker when it comes to pretty much anything related to teaching reform or fiscal responsibility- even the ones who are actually pretty rational and logical about other things.

330 I've learned your resume has to fit the job you're applying for.
---------------------------
My resume says nothing about insurance yet I keep getting emails from State Farm saying that my background would be perfect to be an insurance agent.
Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at July 21, 2019 02:27 PM (lD3vL)

Have you ever been convicted of racketeering and/or loan sharking?

That may be why.

No but seriously, yes. A lot of the time, the resume is going to be read by a computer, before a human ever sees it. So you look at the job description, then look at your qualifications. What you put on your resume MUST match their description as closely as possible... and with some level of concern as to whether you do, indeed, have the skills you say you have.

331 Skip --

Yes, living debt free can be done ... and after the first year or two, it's actually easy. Mr. Empire and I have been doing it for at least 20 years now. Paid cash for our current car (it was used) after the old one was totalled the day of Obama's re-election, so maintained our record there!

Posted by: Empire1 at July 21, 2019 02:34 PM (ZWw89)

332 I'm okay with this kind if budget and debt. What can't go on forever won't. So they are inadvertently doing more to destroy the federal government than the GOP has tried in the last two decades. And I don't feel sorry for anyone holding our debt, because at some point someone sensible has to look at the situation and know that it will never be satisfied.

336 In order for spending to ever be cut, a faction needs either 60 votes in the Senate, or the 50 votes to return the filibuster to it's pre-70's state(the preferred course of action) or abolish it entirely. Anything short of that, and serious spending cuts will never be made, only stuff that lets you nibble at the edges and slight of hand like Trump is doing with the departments he's moving out of DC.

THIS.

CULTURAL MINDSETS, not race, is the issue. If you hail from a culture that does not value education, the less likely you will value education.
