This is one of the things that worried me about President Trump; his comfort with huge amounts of debt. That's the way real estate works, and he was better than most at playing the game. At first I entertained the naive hope that with a booming economy and even a cursory attempt at budget control we would be able to grow our way out of the spiraling deficits that have become the new normal.

Government spending has become so ridiculous that I wonder whether they are still trying to buy votes! How many voters actually pull the lever for the incumbent because he voted for some pork? Spending is out of control on all fronts, so how do people recognize directed spending vs. the background abomination that is the federal budget? It reminds me of watching a chain smoker; lighting one cigarette from the stub of the previous one, never enjoying it but driven by his addiction to the process.

This subject is why I wonder why we have Federal Taxes. What's the point when we finance most of the budget anyway? I know that politicos use taxes and subsidies as a way to control behavior, but in the aggregate if debt doesn't matter neither should revenue.

Part of the problem I think is we've had people screaming about the debt for 30 years. Ross Perot got 20% of the vote twice on the matter. People kind of shrug their shoulders now. And anyone who points out that the debt situation is unsustainable is tuned out by the masses because they've been hearing about a debt bomb all their lives and it has never happened.

Meh, the debt is never going to decrease, and no one outside of a small percentage of white men - whom no one is going to listen to - are ever going to ask for government spending to decrease, or even to stop *increasing* quite so fast.
Unfunded liabilities will eventually become never-paid-out "we took the liberty of bullshitting you" non-liabilities, and the tears will be delicious.
The only question is which factor breaks up the US first: financial collapse, or demographic balkanization. Either way, figure 15 years, maybe 20 tops. Possibly much less.

My one small thought about the deficit/national debt is that it will require something like "the military base closing commission" to address the problem. Remember that?
It took a bipartisan buy-in, & delegation of Congressional authority to the commission, to make VERY unpopular decisions. Once the commission made its decisions to close military bases, Congress could've overridden the commission, but did not.
To do something like that again, only on a vastly bigger scale, a crisis would probably be a necessary condition precedent.

The best thing we could do is adopt the Shirley Jackson solution. An annual lottery of the 535 members of the two houses. The one chosen will be stoned by taxpayers on April 15th, every year. Might not actually fix anything, but it'd be fun.

P.S. I think people will wake up when Social Security benefits start being cut. And that's no surprise: every letter I've ever gotten from Social Security says right up front in the boilerplate: "These benefits are no guarantee of future benefits." They have the right to cut them if they think it's necessary, and say as much.

the only way to reduce debt is to attack entitlements. they won't. trump campaigned on not touching soc. sec. & medicare and most likely would have lost had he intended otherwise.
i gave up on being a fiscal hawk back in the bush II years.
i read somewhere that servicing the debt is already in the hundreds of billions and will reach a trillion in around a decade. something like that.

The debt will never be repaid. They go through the motions to try to convince as many people as possible that the financial system isnt smoke and mirrors -- but it is. One day the merry-go-round will stop, but it wont stop just in the USA, the whole world will be hit and the entire global economy will change. Congress will never stop it.

I agree this is a "defect" of Trump conservatism. He doesn't give a damn about spending.
I really don't think anything serious is going to be done until it's a real crisis.
I'll say this though, I don't think voters care about the issue and I think the debt can be kicked down the road for another generation or two and Trump realizes this and just wants to get reelected.
It's far more important Trump get reelected and appoint more judges than token reforms that maybe cut 1% off discretionary spending.

From what I've read, Social Security is fixable (raising the retirement age, means testing, etc.), but Medicare isn't. Medicare is unsustainable as it is today; "Medicare For All" would probably require a Third World standard of health care.

Once you realize that in any country that has a debt based financial system you can never pay off the debt, you can come to the understanding that the entire purpose of the Federal Government and, now, the State Governments is to borrow more money into existence. The Romans did this, but they were able to go out an conquer other entities so they could just steal the interest from them. We're more "woke" than the Romans, so we just place the debt onto the peasants. The system will default some day. The scum in DC and your State Capitols are just trying to time it so they're no longer there when the SHTF. Maybe that's why we're seeing so many retirements?

From what I've read, Social Security is fixable (raising the retirement age, means testing, etc.), but Medicare isn't. Medicare is unsustainable as it is today; "Medicare For All" would probably require a Third World standard of health care.

If you really worry about this, buy physical gold. It will almost certainly be dead money in terms of growth, but even in a collapse I could see it preserving wealth.

I don't understand the objection to conditioning voting on paying taxes (or having served in the military). If someone doesn't pay taxes, and hasn't served in the military, why should he have any say in our taxes are spent, or how the military is deployed?

As self-evidently stupid as that is, it's an actual economic theory being taken seriously by actual economists. They've even given a a seriously Marxist sounding name: "Modern Monetary Theory." NPR has reported on it a couple of times. Apparently, the idea is that as long as the economy as a whole is growing and inflation is not too high, you can kick the can indefinitely. AFAIK, the theory doesn't say what happens if those conditions change.

A preponderance of people get their money from the government, be it entitlements, financial assistance, direct government employment, government contracting or providing services that are paid for by the government.
This is why the system can and never will work at this point,
I can't pay a government worker $100, tax back $30 of it and continue to pay the $100 again.
The ratio is now, and has been for a while, such that the earnings of the private sector are no longer sufficient to bridge the gap to overcome this.
In my estimation, you need 75% of the country operating in a private economy free from government compensation in order to tax creates wealth enough to fund the other 25% employed in the public sector.
This will never happen. Ever.
So the question becomes: Is there ever a maximum borrowing limit for the federal government?
That answer is no.
So then the next question is: What happens when the balance sheets are such that the rules of accounting no longer apply?
I don't know, but I suspect it will be chaotic when the illusion of fiat currency as having any intrinsic value is broken.
I think many states are already banking on that outcome. States with huge debt loads are purchasing infrastructure at incredible levels ahead of an impending dollar crash, at which point their debt will mean nothing, but the infrastructure acquisition will already be realized.

I do think people like Ron Paul were unfairly dismissed by conservatives when he would talk about reforming the Federal Reserve.
A lot of our spending problems is a FED that basically hands out the credit cards. if you could put the brakes there, a lot would be fixes.
Problem is, people don't that to happen on both sides of the aisle and it probably would have some major short term pain economically.

The paying taxes as a requirement is too convoluted to do that now. Keeping track who qualifies each year would be too burdensome. I would be more for a system of those that were banned from voting based on the government benefits they were receiving. But that definitely would never happen.

It explains the current voting patterns of the "collar counties" of southeastern PA, who have very rapidly turned purple/blue from solid red, and who are very happy with RINO (or just Dem) governance all of a sudden. Our high standard of living is either partly or entirely dependent on govt - even in the "private sectors" of banking, credit, and pharma.
Not sure if its possible, but the only potential fix is to grow the private sector enough. It's a tough battle.

We aren't rich, just comfortable--or so our financial advisor tells us. At least we won't be waiting by the mailbox for the SS check.

You're never going to pass anything regarding voting eligibility and taxes. You would have retirees on social security completely locked out of voting, and that's actually a huge swath of the Republican vote.

I do think people like Ron Paul were unfairly dismissed by conservatives when he would talk about reforming the Federal Reserve.
A lot of our spending problems is a FED that basically hands out the credit cards. if you could put the brakes there, a lot would be fixes.

I've given up worrying about the debt - no one will ever do anything about it, and yeah, it's going to cause a huge crisis and collapse of some sectors when it comes. So plan on it, get ready for it. One easy reform would be to require for at least one year that every single entitlement check is picked up in person by the designated recipient, along with utility bills and grocery receipts.
That would weed out all of the dead, the pets, illegals, multiple enrollments, the financially capable, Disney characters and whoever else is making claims and receiving public money.

Our local Board of Ed routinely violates the spirit, if not the letter of the law prohibiting public funds for electioneering, by sending out all kinds of blast emails to every parent in the District about how necessary the new budget is. That, and the teachers all vote at 105% participation in favor of the budget in generally low turnout elections.
If only there were some kind of political organization, call it a "party" that would take the cause of taxpayers and maybe even organize some counter messaging and a voter turnout campaign.

Various lenders compete for car loans so the lenders offer incentives to get the business. $1500 to $3000 is the typical incentive. So buying with cash is a bad move since nobody will offer incentives to take your cash. It makes sense from that standpoint.

When buying a car, whether used or new, never negotiate on payment. Negotiate price. Then if you have to finance figure out the financing. But negotiating a payment is a sure fire way to get fucked as the buyer.

I always bought used cars from the previous owner. I never set foot in a car dealer. But the last time I needed a car, I had enough money in the bank to pay for it, and saw an ad for a car in my price range that was marked down 14% from the sticker price.
I remembered that a customer at work had told me that the end of a quarter was the best time to buy because the dealers want to turn over inventory. The date was June 30.
So I went in there, took a test drive, and signed the paperwork. The next day I returned with a cashier's check from my bank and drove home.
Maybe I could have gotten a better deal if I had haggled, but I think I did OK.

I always bought used cars from the previous owner. I never set foot in a car dealer. But the last time I needed a car, I had enough money in the bank to pay for it, and saw an ad for a car in my price range that was marked down 14% from the sticker price.
I remembered that a customer at work had told me that the end of a quarter was the best time to buy because the dealers want to turn over inventory. The date was June 30.
So I went in there, took a test drive, and signed the paperwork. The next day I returned with a cashier's check from my bank and drove home.
Maybe I could have gotten a better deal if I had haggled, but I think I did OK.

A friend and neighbor of mine is a dual citizen was telling about one of his cousins (he has a zillion of them!) who worked with some plantation in Mexico or Central America (I've forgotten which).
The cousin was trying to implement education for the children of those who worked the plantation. His biggest impediment? The parents saw no point in it. They wanted Juan and Lupe to go to work as soon as they were out of diapers.
So that cultural perspective is part of the problem.

Class room size is twenty kids. K-12 is thirteen years. To keep it simple, the teacher officiates the same kennel of kids year after year until they graduate. That is just over two litters of children in a single career. so what? Roughly 45 kids received any benefit from that teacher.
That teacher pulls $100k in benefits annually, live another thirty-forty years in retirement at a reduced but COLA matching increasing rate. We are looking at no less than $4.5 million spread across forty five people. Each of those kids needs to pony up $100k just for the teacher alone. Probably quadruple that number to cover the facilities, operation, admin and maintenance costs, the stadiums, the band equipment, the buses, the usual graft, fraud and corruption.
All for an "education" that doesn't include identifying the three branches of government, how to balance a checkbook, or able to tell the difference between a biological man and a woman.

I always bought used cars from the previous owner. I never set foot in a car dealer. But the last time I needed a car, I had enough money in the bank to pay for it, and saw an ad for a car in my price range that was marked down 14% from the sticker price.
I remembered that a customer at work had told me that the end of a quarter was the best time to buy because the dealers want to turn over inventory. The date was June 30.
So I went in there, took a test drive, and signed the paperwork. The next day I returned with a cashier's check from my bank and drove home.
Maybe I could have gotten a better deal if I had haggled, but I think I did OK.

You know the old saw about everyone is most conservative about what they themselves know best? It seems to be the opposite for teachers I have known. This is only my experience, but every one is a blue eyed zealot, Jonestown kool aid drinker when it comes to pretty much anything related to teaching reform or fiscal responsibility- even the ones who are actually pretty rational and logical about other things.

I'm okay with this kind if budget and debt. What can't go on forever won't. So they are inadvertently doing more to destroy the federal government than the GOP has tried in the last two decades. And I don't feel sorry for anyone holding our debt, because at some point someone sensible has to look at the situation and know that it will never be satisfied.

In order for spending to ever be cut, a faction needs either 60 votes in the Senate, or the 50 votes to return the filibuster to it's pre-70's state(the preferred course of action) or abolish it entirely. Anything short of that, and serious spending cuts will never be made, only stuff that lets you nibble at the edges and slight of hand like Trump is doing with the departments he's moving out of DC.
