New York Times: Google and FaceBook Are Tracking Your Every Click on Pornographic Websites

Yes, well. #MuhPrivateMonopoly and all.

A new study scanned 22,484 pornography sites and found them riddled with trackers from major technology companies.

Silicon Valley’s biggest companies are always watching you -- even when you're browsing pornography websites in incognito mode.

Trackers from tech companies like Google and Facebook are logging your most personal browsing details, according to a forthcoming New Media & Society paper, which scanned 22,484 pornography websites. Where that data ultimately goes is not always clear.

“These porn sites need to think more about the data that they hold and how it’s just as sensitive as something like health information,” said Elena Maris, a postdoctoral researcher at Microsoft and the study’s lead author. “Protecting this data is crucial to the safety of its visitors. And what we’ve seen suggests that these websites and platforms might not have thought all of this through like they should have.”

The study’s other authors -- Jennifer Henrichsen, doctoral candidate at the University of Pennsylvania, and Tim Libert, a Carnegie Mellon computer science instructor -- found that 93 percent of the pornography websites they scanned sent data to an average of seven third-party domains.

...

The study found that Google (or one of its subsidiary companies like the advertising platform DoubleClick) had trackers on 74 percent of the pornography sites. Trackers from the software company Oracle showed up on 24 percent of sites, and Facebook, which does not permit pornographic content or nudity on any of its platforms, had trackers on 10 percent of the sex websites scanned by the study.

Is this why I keep seeing ads for RompHims?

A friend of mine mused the other day: It's only a matter of time before Monster Tech, or the Chinese intelligence services which have infiltrated them, start either quietly blackmailing people or publicly embarrassing people by releasing huge troves of data about porn usage.

I guess it's a good thing that my inclinations are mostly normal.

Mostly.

LOL at anyone who thinks they have any privacy or anonymity on porn sites, at all.

Normal people understand that if a porn site is up on their computer for just a split second it has probably dropped a ton of malware, spyware, thisware, thatware and all sorts of stuff that the computer needs to be scrubbed with bleach - real bleach - before it can be trusted with anything.

And that is no surprise, either.

There are lots of ways companies track people that people aren't even aware of. Not just using trackers, but simply having images on a site help track people - and there's really not that much you can do about it.

OSs are starting to fight back, though. WIth Linux you can change your mac address and computer info with web access, thereby altering your "computer fingerprint". And any sane person uses a VPN. And if someone really cares then they can set themselves up with a live DVD or live USB system and be essentially untrackable from afar (via VPN) ... if they care that much.

I don't know if I believe this, but Tim Pool says this isn't that your devices are directly eavesdropping. It's worse than that, he says. He says the predictive consumer-behavior AI is so good that these things can now make highly accurate guesses about what you're interested in or what you WILL be interested in and when, based on terabytes of prior behavior.

..More complicated than this. Multiple avenues for tracking, here:- Android device, Google has you tracked
- Mobile device w/ FB installed, or any of several hundred apps that gather on behalf of FB - FB has you tracked- Any device, mobile or desktop, accessed via an IP or device associated with you from another method - both Google and FB have you tracked via stuff embedded in the actual sites (which is mostly what this article is talking about)
You are not going to evade tracking by either of them without more care, effort, and knowledge than 99 out of 100 commenters here are going to be able to cough up.

So if you had a big enough computer and a good enough software program and a LARGE enough data sample of what people did all day long and what they do in response to cultural stimuli. You might come pretty close to being able to predict human behavior on the macro level. And with time, you'd see what stimuli can lead to certain outcomes on a macro level.

242 Think about this.

I saw a presentation by Google about their AI and predictive capabilities. It started with the fact they back up all the internet data three times a day. They have so many events to correlate it's scary. They showed entire predictive structures that were scary accurate and just keep getting better.

They can use it for world events, the financial industry, weather events, elections- you name it. For individuals with enough data they can predict your future choice with very high accuracy.

Think of all the data you voluntarily give them all day long. Then think of this on the wrong hands.

269 > Speaking of stuff I'm too scared to google, what is "revenge porn"?
Example:

1) You take vids of your gf giving you a hummer, just for personal use.
2) Later, you find out that your gf is blowing your best friend, your brother, and your neighbor's dog.3) You dump her and upload the vid to a porn site, so her skills live on the net forever.
That's basically it.

433 The left (bigtech) does not care about porn. They are porn personified in all it's various perversions. Their plan is to bring perversion as was formerly classified by psych pros before they announced it was 'normal', back in the late 60's-early 70's? Now today, when perversion is deemed not only normal behavior but preferred behavior they can reserve the normal perversions for themselves and righteously point the finger at others. The others will be conservatives who have the pornstain somewhere on their clothing or their persons. The left will see absolutely no irony in this stance at all. Clearly Japan needs common-sense gasoline control.

We recommend: a mandatory background check and a three day waiting period before buying gas. No automated gas pumps, hand pumps only. A ban on high-capacity gas tanks. No one needs more than one gallon of gas at a time.

Steve Buscemi's character shared a lot of Crumb's musical tastes although I think Cartoon Bob's are slightly weirder. I have a solo saxophone cd by a Scandi named Mats Gustafsson who most of the Horde would consider random noise. Anyway he sent it to Crumb on a whim and Bob absolutely hated it. He scribbled off a few paragraphs, in his trademark script, about how much he disliked it which became the liner notes to "Torturing the Saxophone".

Anyway I really liked Ghost World.

So I get on amazon.com and started to typed "men's swim shirts". As so as I typed "men" it auto filled "men's swim shirts" and showed me their recommendations. I never searched for those before.

How the f*** did they know what I wanted? I was at work so there was no Alexa around, unless they have a little hidden app in my phone listening to me. F'n scary.

Oh and the porn spying? Given Google and FB's blatant political bias you can bet they are saving that info to dox or blackmail anyone they don't like via a 3rd party. Might explain some of the weirdness for Justice Roberts for example.

You have friends that are known to Facebook. When those friends communicate with you via e-mail or text message, Facebook records that the interaction took place, and notes that you are linked to the person who sent you the message. And then they start assembling a file on you using every other interaction that they notice, and all of the cookies fhat they've managed to install on your computer.

This might be a good topic to regularly have. I admit to being a bean counter and not a programmer whiz.

Posted by: Curmudgeon at July 18, 2019 04:57 PM (ujg0T)"
..This *would* be a great topic, and doing it at least once is probably more important than some of the recurring educational weekend threads.
The basics aren't too difficult - the dead simple method is knowing compromised devices and services, what they can see, and using that knowledge so that you're not doing something where they can see you that you don't want them to see. I.e, just go offline, and know what really being offline means.

The hard part is continuing to use modern commo tech while avoiding those pitfalls, *while also not having a giant pile of IT security skills*. It can be done with discipline and a specific set of starting conditions:
- Not the ass end of nowhere where you will stand out- Not some place with 47 different cams and other things observing you- Basic care in the purchase of equipment and segregating what you're doing from your existing tech
A couple of hundred bucks and a spare afternoon or two and you can be up and running, keeping in mind that it will be a literal burner device - you do something you don't want linked to you via the device, you need to ditch it and use another/start over.
We don't need to worry about things like leaving a history, of, say, commenting here. What we need to worry about is not knowing how to do something like comment here in the future with true anonymity.

Posted by: lurker (the other one... spelled with a P) at July 18, 2019 08:08 PM (eAshZ)

492 Trackers are EVERYWHERE.

All a site owner needs to do is to reference one little bit of JavaScript code, one little CSS file, one image on another person's server.

The nature of HTTP Web Browsers are that, when presented with a resource that is requested by a page, it needs to reach out to the location of the resource. It may be the same site you're on. It may be a related site (think ACECOMMENTS versus ACE.mu.nu). Or it may be a helper site owned by some third party. It "Requests" the data, and may either get back the file requested, get back an error code (think File Not Found), or notified that the existing file is unchanged and there's no need to re-download a 4 MB script for now.

Anyone with half a decent web server (the 'Host' of a site) logs what IPs ask for what files. Most folks expunge the data at intervals, either because of laws, because of policy, or because their hard drive runs out of space. It'll probably not only log whom (your IP), what (the file/path), and when (time of access), but also 'where' (the original site/page that made the request). All that is in the request itself, or the 'Header' packet that goes when your browser requests a file.

Folks like Google and Facebook are in the Big Data business. They have storage that is exponential, designed to keep massive amounts of data from millions to billions of people. They've designed programs to slice and dice the data to make some headway into it, such as figuring out which sites are related by way of IP addresses accessing those sites in close time proximity. Or who you actually are (name, birthdate, SSN, orientation, first pet's name) by matching that IP address from your login to Facebook to other sites. Double so if you're actively using one of their held sites, like YouTube (and everyone just LOVES to embed YouTube links and videos into their pages).

So far, my recommendation is a local HOSTS file (DNS) entry that assigns anything related to Google and to Facebook, including any 'CDN' servers and the like, to "0.0.0.0". If your system doesn't go out and ask a server for a file in the first place because it's not a valid server to your machine, said server won't have access to the request info. This will *BREAK* several sites, even YouTube, if it can't get the scripts it needs to run. Or even prevent you from accessing the site because, again, you're black-holing that DNS name so it can't get the page anyways.

Granted, if someone is using the IP address of a server, rather than its DNS name, then the HOSTS file can't do a damn thing.
