Tired of hearing the democraps bleating about the ICE raids. Try flagrantly ignoring a judge's orders as a citizen and see what happens to your happy ass. These people break the law crossing the border, still get a day in court, get deportation orders and then thumb their noses at our laws. Idiots like AOC bleat that these people are fleeing because law and order is breaking down in their own country. Is it any wonder?

OT:
I'm in the market for a VR headset, but can't decide if this is the right time to buy, since lots of new models are coming out. I tested the Oculus Quest, and it was good, but it has a low fps. On the plus side, it's a standalone set, so no cable to an external gaming computer. The Valve Index looks promising, but does require the external computer and cable. It has a very high fps, resolution as good as or better than the Quest, and large fov. I'm less interested in fps games, and more in realistic fantasy worlds, a la the old Myst game. https://twitter.com/CarolBlymire/status/1149805563674583040 Posted by: ace at July 12, 2019 07:32 PM (PbpT7) Wow. Remember how common it was in the old days (say, 10 years ago) to warn about letting your kids get spoiled? The real problem with something once it's spoiled is that as it sits around, it proceeds to become thoroughly rotten, all the way through. Those parents have spoiled those kids for life, and they will be rotten to be around for anyone they ever meet. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 12, 2019 07:41 PM (V2Yro) 114

I think both Xbox and PS4 are releasing new consoles next year and
people expect them to also release new VR sets. Maybe improvements coming. PS4 yes, but Sony says they won't release the new PS and the new VR set at the same time. My guess is technical problems with the latter. They're trying to implement eye tracking and foveated rendering to minimize computation. What I'm really excited about is something called galvanic vestibular stimulation. Basically, it's 4 electrodes you place around your head. so Greatest American Hero is on Amazon Prime and I watched season one and half of the first ep of season 2.
So far I've seen Danny Glover and Markie Post in guest roles. Markie Post was not as cute when she was younger. It's a good show. Special effects are terrible and they overuse the same shots even more than I remembered (and I did notice it as a kid; only bigger overuse of stock shots was the miss-miss-hit sequence of a Viper shooting at a Cylon Raider in battlestar galactica). Strangely, most plots are about... espionage invovling the Russians. Ah, the 80s, Posted by: ace at July 12, 2019 07:44 PM (PbpT7) 125

Aw, hell, they really want him dead - from Breitbart:
Tommy Robinson has reportedly been transferred to Belmarsh prison, a maximum security facility in south London once described in Britain's mainstream media as "a jihadi training camp". Tommy Robinson was re-sentenced to nine months in prison this week for non-violent contempt of court offences --- after an earlier ten-month sentence passed within hours of his initial arrest was quashed --- of which he should have to serve around two-and-a-half months before becoming eligible for automatic release on licence. In 2016, a former Muslim inmate of Belmarsh told the London Evening Standard that "There were so many would-be jihadists in there I felt like an intruder at a jihadi training camp." My office millennial Little Miss Ladybitch has not (that I know of) had her parents call her boss. I suppose it could have happened.
But every other thing in that thread. Every. Other. Thing. Any disagreement with her about anything will earn you a snotty lecture, often in loud, strident tones about "her truth" she learned through "her lived experience." And G-d forbid one of her woke political topics comes up... Jay-zus. For instance: we had a company wide all hands meeting to learn about the new insurance plan. Everyone from corporate was present, with sixty offices around the country dialing in. Miss Ladybitch: "Does it cover abortion or birth control?" Insurance agent: "No." Miss Ladybitch: "Feh. That doesn't seem fair." Insurance Agent: "Virtually no plans cover those things." Miss Ladybitch: "See... that's the problem..." ...followed by a rambling tirade about reproductive rights and patriarchy that only ended when our horrified HR director (a sweet old lady) broke in and made her stop. This is the future ![]() Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at July 12, 2019 07:56 PM (xyLnq) 204

I've never met this guy and don't know where he's located. Just get the inspirational e-mails, that's it. His latest today is about how he was at some meeting and the US Women's Soccer Team was cited regarding inspirational team work and meeting high expectations. The e-mail has a large picture of the team in triumph, confetti falling all around, the Purple Haired Anti-American Deviated Prevert front and center of course, a team mate two ranks back holding the flag recovered after the weirdo and her crony ditched it onto the ground. It's a moderately long riff and he 's got something in there about coaching staff out of disruptive behaviors. (Me? Talking about me?) Re ICE raids for those with final deportation orders - don't worry, the ACLU has a few pre-emptive lawsuits launched already. Even a few years ago, that would be ridiculous, and considered an embarrassing stunt with zero chance of affecting things. Today? They didn't know who Custer was or what he did. They couldn't tell us why the heads on Mt. Rushmore were there. They had no clue about the Alamo or WW 2. But they knew the white man was mean to the Indian. One of our grand daughters thought she could breeze into Veterinary school simply because she loves animals. She was shocked when we told her what she would have to do just to get into college. These are our 2 daughters children and their parents aren't stupid. If one may ask for thanks prayers here, I'd like to. Mr. Empire was taken to the ER very late Sunday with severe abdominal pain, released to home with laxatives early Monday.
Back again late Tuesday, diagnosed with acute diverticulitis, sent home with pain meds and antibiotics. Barely able to move from the pain. Today he was able to drive. Still hurting some, but able to walk to the car and back into the house, even helping carry a few groceries, and feeling much better (at least mentally) being able to do that. So prayers of thanks for his improvement would be welcome, as well as that the improvement will continue. Thanks! Posted by: Empire1 at July 12, 2019 08:51 PM (QFT4x) 463

Math was the only part of school I liked.
Math has answers that are either correct or incorrect. Every other subject was graded based on the teacher's predilections. Actually, I guess I liked history as well, at least when it came to facts and dates. The deeper meaning of history was again subject to the whimsies of instructors. That aspect of history is probably more prevalent now than ever with post-modernism on the rise and the anachronistic nature of revisionist history. Philosophy was the most interesting and enlightening field I ever studied in college though. Sadly, I suspect that that is an all too frequent occurrence. My sons were put off science for life by incredibly bad HS courses in science. The chemistry course went from talking about atoms on p. N to talking about glycosidic linkages in DNA on p. N + 2. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at July 12, 2019 08:44 PM (GJkKh) I had a Classical Mythology class once where the professor immediately started talking about the Oracle of Delphi on the first day. Without giving any context on how the Oracle fit into Greek Civilization or Religion. The rest of the course was equally incoherent, with virtually no context provided for anything that was taught. After going through Hesiod's Theogony and The Iliad (primary sources), she made us read Giraudoux's Tiger at the Gates (dumbass two-act play written over 3000 years later as a criticism of WWI) as the big finale for the course. Funny thing is, she was a walking talking college professor cliche. Fat bulldyke with a crew cut wearing Birkenstocks and thick wool socks, either in the early summer heat or during pouring rainstorms. Plus of course, she hated students. I mean, HATED students. That's so sad. Too many lecturers are there because 1) they have to be, and/or 2) they want to show how much more they know than the students, little realizing that knowing more than 18 year olds is a pretty pathetic standard. I've had colleagues like that, who deprecated what the students knew. I pointed out that they had studied the subject exclusively for decades, whereas the students had been studying it for maybe hours. I further pointed out that the lecturer was the least important person in the lecture theater, as the lecture was not about him. My colleagues looked at me as though I were crazy. I froze for a second - so did he - and the urge to scream, or yell horribly, or run all ran through my mind, but I also thought "my wife is in the next room and she's not gonna rest until I do Something about it, and I have got no freakin' clue right now." So I surprised even myself when I did like Bugs Bunny would do when he'd find the Monster hiding behind the door, and I just calmly and quickly closed the door and old myself "Well its a good thing nothing was there." The reason armadillos get killed on the road so much is they have got this habit of jumping about 2 feet straight up into the air whenever they're startled. It'll scare the shit out of you if you come up on one in the woods or somewhere, which is easy to do since their eyesight is terrible.
When a big truck straddles or a car straddles them, they could just hunker down and be fine, but they'll do that BOING BOING thing right into the bottom of it. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 12, 2019 09:45 PM (V2Yro) 729

As someone that grew up in the Magnolia State, back when the rural parts were really, genuinely rural and mostly made up of small family farms near what the Census Bureau called "hamlets," because they didn't qualify as villages or even townships -
possums were despised for the way they preyed on poultry, not to mention ducks and geese, and also because of the way they "sulled up," i.e. feigned death when pursued. Yet at the same time, a lot of folks (not, I'm happy to say, yours truly) loved them...... As food items. I lost track of how many folks rhapsodized about how delicious fried or stewed possums with baked potatoes were. Never once put it to the test, and no regrets on that front. Just a little perspective from the old, Deep South. Posted by: A. Pendragon at July 12, 2019 09:48 PM (lJMCC) 739

The weird thing about baseball in 2019 is that you'd think with all the home runs it would be a high scoring era. But it isn't. Scoring is up from the 2010-2013 lull but well down from the late 90s and early 00s. There are tons of HRs and strikeouts. Balls in play are way down. Walks are pretty steady.

Empire, diverticulitis is serious stuff! If there's a bout - abdominal pain and fever - stop eating solids, go to the doc/ER, take antibiotics and take it easy. Low fiber for the next few days, and ease back into fiber; take fiber supplements like metamucil and lots of water. Keep a food journal to see what triggers a flare up. Pistachios put me in the hospital for a week - three bouts later I needed surgery. Please tell Mr. E to be careful!!
