I'm in the market for a VR headset, but can't decide if this is the right time to buy, since lots of new models are coming out.
I tested the Oculus Quest, and it was good, but it has a low fps. On the plus side, it's a standalone set, so no cable to an external gaming computer.
The Valve Index looks promising, but does require the external computer and cable. It has a very high fps, resolution as good as or better than the Quest, and large fov.
I'm less interested in fps games, and more in realistic fantasy worlds, a la the old Myst game.

I'm no expert, but I'd say it is not the right time to buy. Everyone is trying to make it happen, the balance of affordability and resolution and tetheredness. It will be a while. If you don't badly want something you will throw away in 2-3 years for something cheaper and better, but will get you that VR thing in the meantime, I'd hold off.

PS4 yes, but Sony says they won't release the new PS and the new VR set at the same time. My guess is technical problems with the latter. They're trying to implement eye tracking and foveated rendering to minimize computation.
What I'm really excited about is something called galvanic vestibular stimulation. Basically, it's 4 electrodes you place around your head. When a small current is passed through them, it fools your inner ear, and you have the sensation of falling or moving side to side. I don't think it's imminent, but I know the big boys are working on it.

So far I've seen Danny Glover and Markie Post in guest roles. Markie Post was not as cute when she was younger.
It's a good show. Special effects are terrible and they overuse the same shots even more than I remembered (and I did notice it as a kid; only bigger overuse of stock shots was the miss-miss-hit sequence of a Viper shooting at a Cylon Raider in battlestar galactica).
Strangely, most plots are about... espionage invovling the Russians.

I got a headset that holds my smartphone. VR is fun, but I can't wear that thing for longer than about 20 minutes at a time. Too heavy.
Watching the Macy' Thanksgiving Day Parade in VR was a lot of fun. It's like being there without freezing your ass off.

When my wife and I looked for a private school for our kid (because public schools pretty much suck here) we looked for ones that emphasized "Classical Education" and even better were affiliated with one of the major classical education organizations. They do a pretty good job of giving a comprehensive education close to what kids were getting earlier last century.

Sadly, I suspect that that is an all too frequent occurrence. My sons were put off science for life by incredibly bad HS courses in science. The chemistry course went from talking about atoms on p. N to talking about glycosidic linkages in DNA on p. N + 2. But they don't teach pH in that course because "it's too difficult."
I'm not making this up. Students basically had to simply memorize information, as they weren't taught the underlying foundation at all. I think that course would have put me off of chemistry, and I'd been fascinated by it since I was nine.

Back again late Tuesday, diagnosed with acute diverticulitis, sent home with pain meds and antibiotics. Barely able to move from the pain.
Today he was able to drive. Still hurting some, but able to walk to the car and back into the house, even helping carry a few groceries, and feeling much better (at least mentally) being able to do that.
So prayers of thanks for his improvement would be welcome, as well as that the improvement will continue.

Math has answers that are either correct or incorrect.
Every other subject was graded based on the teacher's predilections.
Actually, I guess I liked history as well, at least when it came to facts and dates. The deeper meaning of history was again subject to the whimsies of instructors.
That aspect of history is probably more prevalent now than ever with post-modernism on the rise and the anachronistic nature of revisionist history.
Philosophy was the most interesting and enlightening field I ever studied in college though.

I have a teammate (late 50s, I would guess) who went in for a physical to be re-certified for scuba diving.
He ended up getting a quadruple bypass, during which time they found he'd previously had had a heart attack. And this guy used to catch nine inning games in 95 degree heat.
We were astonished.
(The good news: he recovered completely, and is now back playing ball - catching!)

I worry about this because I teach English AKA the Death of Fun.
I swapped out a girl-protagonist book for one with a boy surviving alone on an island (I had ONE parent complaint that was squelched before it reached me). I also decided to swap out an essay for a personal essay, which meant I read a lot of explanations of game systems, fishing lures, and a terrific compare/contrast of bow vs gun deer hunting.
I'm trying to figure out what to change up this year, but I'm also going to be teaching a class that my boss said is basically teaching kids how to score better on the state test. Blech!

Sadly, I suspect that that is an all too frequent occurrence. My sons were put off science for life by incredibly bad HS courses in science. The chemistry course went from talking about atoms on p. N to talking about glycosidic linkages in DNA on p. N + 2.

I had a Classical Mythology class once where the professor immediately started talking about the Oracle of Delphi on the first day. Without giving any context on how the Oracle fit into Greek Civilization or Religion. The rest of the course was equally incoherent, with virtually no context provided for anything that was taught.
After going through Hesiod's Theogony and The Iliad (primary sources), she made us read Giraudoux's Tiger at the Gates (dumbass two-act play written over 3000 years later as a criticism of WWI) as the big finale for the course.
Funny thing is, she was a walking talking college professor cliche. Fat bulldyke with a crew cut wearing Birkenstocks and thick wool socks, either in the early summer heat or during pouring rainstorms. Plus of course, she hated students. I mean, HATED students. All of them.

Butcher block tops look nice and they're sturdy, but they're not cheap. Some people seem to luck into factory seconds, so I'll keep an eye out. That's a great idea for the top, because one side is going to be a soldering bench.

That's so sad. Too many lecturers are there because 1) they have to be, and/or 2) they want to show how much more they know than the students, little realizing that knowing more than 18 year olds is a pretty pathetic standard.
I've had colleagues like that, who deprecated what the students knew. I pointed out that they had studied the subject exclusively for decades, whereas the students had been studying it for maybe hours.
I further pointed out that the lecturer was the least important person in the lecture theater, as the lecture was not about him.
My colleagues looked at me as though I were crazy.
But I stand by what I said.

On corrections, I was utterly embarrassed when I started this job in Dec. 2017. Atty's still write out stuff on yellow tablets and some of the handwriting was, well, difficult to read. And it was all new law I was not familiar with or didn't know the terms.

You would have loved the time I heard an odd noise in our Air Conditioning closet (nothing but mechanical stuff in there, and I didn't realize at the time a small hole in the floor leading to the crawlspace under the house, which is only 18" deep so you can't get into it) ANYWAY I opened the louvered door to look in, and there, on top of one piece of equipment, there was a possum about 24" away from my face.
I froze for a second - so did he - and the urge to scream, or yell horribly, or run all ran through my mind, but I also thought "my wife is in the next room and she's not gonna rest until I do Something about it, and I have got no freakin' clue right now." So I surprised even myself when I did like Bugs Bunny would do when he'd find the Monster hiding behind the door, and I just calmly and quickly closed the door and old myself "Well its a good thing nothing was there." And I didn't look again til the next day.

possums were despised for the way they preyed on poultry, not to mention ducks and geese, and also because of the way they "sulled up," i.e. feigned death when pursued. Yet at the same time, a lot of folks (not, I'm happy to say, yours truly) loved them......
As food items. I lost track of how many folks rhapsodized about how delicious fried or stewed possums with baked potatoes were. Never once put it to the test, and no regrets on that front.

There are four kinds of hits: singles, doubles, triples, and home runs. I think their frequency should be in that order.

I'm finally reading that story where Psychotic Kitty Party admits that the Green New Deal is actually a destroy capitalism cake with climate change frosting. The guy who sat there dumbstruck was none other than Jay Inslee's "climate director." Yes, the climate czar of Jay Inslee (the most climate-obsessed Dem candidate) thought Chakrabarti was a little nuts.

Many years ago, I lived with a couple of guy on the outskirts of town and a possum took up residence in the garage under the freezer.
We did the ammonia trick, no result. Shooting was out of the question because collateral damage.
So it came down to the cold steel, specifically a garage-sale rapier.
That blade has taken a number of critters, most recently a groundhog.
One of my daughters killed a mouse with her fencing sabre, so it runs in the family.
