Mid-Morning Art Thread [Kris]

Wyld Manchester Moor.jpg

Manchester From Kersal Moor
William Wyld

For this one, I decided to do a general search through an online art gallery for something I hadn’t seen before and this one caught my eye. It’s a lovely piece that combines genres, colors, and forms to create a nice image full of contrasts.

This is mainly a pastoral work with a splash of the modern cityscape through the center. The foreground and middle ground are filled with a lush green landscape. The immediate foreground is the rugged rise with trees and rocks. A few goats rest on the left, and a couple with a doggeh sit among the trees to the far left. It is peaceful and quiet. We are far away from the black, busy, crowded city. Wyld shows us that Manchester was already becoming a center of the Industrial Revolution by this time. The dank gray forms of the city are starkly angular, whereas the foreground is a gentle curvilinear, wavy with forms going off in many different directions.

The middle ground is low and flat. It provides a nice visual rest after the detail of the hills and the city and a nice barrier separating the two. The Irwell River winds through this area and guides the eye around the piece and blends in well with the landscape. Behind the city the land rises again in a nice echo of the foreground and the color melts into the sky.

This is a Realist work with Romantic influences. The romantic, idyllic pastoral is set against the realist, oppressive city, but the countryside wins out in the end. It dominates our view and the work itself. The major colors of green, white and yellow work together to overpower the dank gray. They almost succeed too, but the gray streaks across the work’s center and cannot be ignored.
Finally, Wyld does a couple of interesting things with copse of trees on the left. First, they are the only thing that intersect all three regions of the painting. The three areas are very specifically defined and could create a disjointed, patchy work, but the trees unite the regions, tying them, and the painting, together. The second thing is harder to describe, so I hope you’re able to follow me…

The shape of the canopy of the trees is mirrored in the smoke from the factories on the right. Even the tree trunks are repeated in the smokestacks. However, because the color of the smoke is more faded than the green leaves, Wyld made the area covered by the smoke larger. Both shapes come to a point to the left of center, directly under the sun. To me, they look like a set of curtains pulling back to reveal the sun. They also frame it. It’s a nice effect.

This work was created around the time Fredrick Engels was writing in Manchester, but I do not think this work has the same message at all. There is definitely a compare/contrast going on between the city and countryside but I’m not reading a vicious attack on Capitalism or a tirade on class warfare and social injustice. It’s seems to be more of a generalized country-life-vs.-city-life theme. It’s a very peaceful scene.

[Kris has graciously agreed (after much begging from me), to write an occasional art thread. Look for her name on the headline so you won't be surprised to find actual informed art criticism on these august pages]

city, but the countryside wins out in the end. It dominates our view and
the work itself."

Nah, unless this is a terrible copy, the city smog wins. It permeates everything. Not knowing anything about the artist, or their particular bent, I would guess it's social commentary.

How dare you ugly city smokestacks ruin our goat infested countryside.

The industrial city looms and is encroaching. Our lovers have found a way to block that out for now. They have an idyll to which they can still retreat.

Look at the shadows on the valley floor. The way they diverge implies that the sun is directly behind the city and at a low angle, and yet you can't see the sun through the smog.

This is a last look at a soon-to-be lost world.

Make a luke-warm salt bath to soak it in - 20-30min. That should draw down the inflimation.
Chill it with an ice water bath - 20-30min - may have to extend a bit, to ease the swelling.

167 96 I get a sense of foreboding from this. (And yes, I read Kris' piece and I don't think it's anti-capitalist).

PS: Thanks Kris!
Posted by: Bandersnatch at July 18, 2019 09:50 AM (fuK7c)

Yeah. The sun confused me for a bit, but according to a map this is a sunrise. Sunrises are usually positive and it contrasts nicely with the black smoke and factories. The sun is quite blinding and there's the thing with the trees/smoke curtain. There's definitely is some tension happening in the work, but the painting makes me happy overall so I went with that.

Two days ago I got stung by a bee. It nailed me near the knuckle of
my left index finger. A yellow jacket. I'm not allergic and in the past
stings have been immediately painful with some local swelling but
otherwise no big deal. This, however has caused my hand to swell up like
a ham hock. Cannot close my fingers. It isn't painful and the skin is
slightly itchy. I've been using ice for the swelling and cream for the
skin. Is there anything else I can do? It is really annoying.

In general, it would be nice if the date of the painting was included. I'm at work and don't have time to do a lengthy search. I don't see why I should have to search for the date any more than I have to search for the artist and title. Is there a quick way to find it? The quickest way would be to include it in the post.

202 Since this seems to be an open thread, I would like to make some comments about the Wednesday prayer list, since I won't be back again till later. Someone wrote about the prayer list thread that "Sometimes I can't bear to look at it." Since the person who wrote that is a very compassionate person, I think what they meant is ,It just seems overwhelming-so many people with so many problems, particularly if you are dealing with your own. That is understandable. However, if you are a person who is praying for the brothers and sisters you might consider this if you don't want to pray for the whole list at one time:

1. Print out the list to use at various times during the day if you can

2. You might, for example, take Monday to pray for the people affected by cancer-for healing, Tuesday to pray for the people who are dealing with other health concerns-Wednesday to pray for people looking for jobs, etc, Thursday to thank God for any answered prayer requests and to thank God for any blessings in your life.

Yes, I know that all Christians pray and know how to do that. I just didn't want people to feel overwhelmed, and I like to pray and I like to talk about prayer, It's a big focus of my ministry. No, it doesn't mean I'm more of an expert than any other praying person here. It just means that you can take the list in smaller sec tions Thanks for your prayers! They mean a lot to me, I know and others have expressed the same thing.

===========

"Real" history books take decades to get written.

Access to primary documents (which is typically extremely limited until well after a president's death) is the main reason.

The secondary reason is that the biases of the day take a long time to die out.

Perfect example is Grant. Most of his biographies use Henry Adams' biography as a starting point, but Adams had an axe to grind with Grant because Grant didn't give him a post in his administration. That snub colored Adams' view of Grant and that bias seeped into most biographies for the next hundred years.

Chernow's new biography makes an effort to eschew Adams as a source and he ends up with a vastly different view of the president than most previous efforts.

Anyway, what this means is that we're not going to get a good biography of Obama until he's been dead for at least 30 years, probably 50. The history of the early decades of the 21st century won't get a fair and full shake until the 2070s or so.

This painting has trees, and is art. However, the trees are poorly characterised. Going on growth form alone, I'm guessing this is a mixed oak/ash hardwood forest but honestly it's hard to tell. Some of those might be young willow, and honestly, the big dark ones could even be catalpa for all one can tell.

Also, it would be better with a cabin. cabin's are always nice.

I wouldn't blame Obama for this. They haven't even released anything of his yet.

Plus, Obama seems to be a net-positive for international users.

No, the problem is that streaming is now highly competitive with several large players. Netflix's time as king was always going to come to an end.

And it's only going to get worse. Disney+ is coming in the near future. With that, Disney's going to pull all Disney content from Netflix (like the Marvel movies). Netflix is already losing The Office and Friends as well.

We're now beginning the flooded market stage of the streaming industry's life cycle. It's gonna be messy for the next few years, but I imagine we'll eventually settle on something similar but markedly different from what we have now. Something more integrated across services. I don't know how that will flesh out specifically.

The Jacksons are a couple of shameless grifters, money is the only reason they'd lift a finger to help Blago.

Which brings up another point. How would Blago get the money or the influence to move money to the Jacksons if he was in the pokey for the last 7 years? Now I'm wondering about the circumstances of Blago's incarceration, if he could retain all of that influence.

303 The painting still works for today, but the rot in the cities is not from pollution or even terrible work conditions. Today the city rot is gangs and leftist corruption, not to mention the welfare mentality and illegals running their own shit hole areas, where lawlessness is ignored.

My hope and dilemma is some sort of homesteading revolution, which has an inspiring movement on YouTube videos of those building/developing small acreages. But I think rural areas are still losing their population to the BigCity allure. The million a year illegals find their sanctuary city, and the other million on visa or legal immigrant are also going to the city.

Blagojevich's 14-year sentence on federal corruption charges "was far
longer than the offense deserved." They urged Trump to grant Blagojevich
a full pardon and release him from prison.

Blagojevich has served more than 7 years of his sentence, following
his 2011 conviction for, among other things, trying to sell an
appointment to the U.S. Senate seat once held by Barack Obama before he
was elected president in 2008.

The Jacksons are a couple of shameless grifters, money is the only reason they'd lift a finger to help Blago.

Which brings up another point. How would Blago get the money or the
influence to move money to the Jacksons if he was in the pokey for the
last 7 years? Now I'm wondering about the circumstances of Blago's
incarceration, if he could retain all of that influence.

His most honest book is Portnoy's Complaint. The rest are merely Roth virtue signaling and pretending to be Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was a boor and a needy kid seeking attention. His last book was horrible on so many levels my guess was he needed a paycheck before checking out.

Looking back at his generation of writers I would say the better ones were Kesey, Heller and Wolfe. I like Wolfe's earlier works cuz his later were all about NYC which is boring.

-------

I can tell you two anecdotes which of course means it's gospel.

1. I was at a baby shower with a woman who accidentally ate shrimp in a salad. She had switched purses and inadvertently left her epipen at home. Someone had Benadryl pills and got her to swallow a couple, but she started losing consciousness (we had already called an ambulance). Then someone else remembered they had liquid Benadryl in the car and ran to get it, saying that it acted more quickly. They were right. Boy, it was like watching Lazarus raise from the dead.

2. A friend of ours went to lunch one day, had something seafoody (to which he had never been allergic), walked back into his office and although he felt fine, his face had swelled up so much his secretary didn't recognize him. He walked across the street to a pharmacy. The pharmacist saw him approaching, ripped open a bottle of Benadryl and handed it to my friend, saying "Start drinking this and don't stop until I tell you, and then tell me what happened."

So I always keep the liquid on hand, just in case.

Two days ago I got stung by a bee. It nailed me near the knuckle of my left index finger. A yellow jacket.
I'm not allergic and in the past stings have been immediately painful with some local swelling but otherwise no big deal.
This, however has caused my hand to swell up like a ham hock. Cannot close my fingers. It isn't painful and the skin is slightly itchy.
I've been using ice for the swelling and cream for the skin.
Is there anything else I can do? It is really annoying.

Actually, Jim Varney was a talented comedic actor. He was hampered by his face from getting serious roles, but that rubber face is what made him. I remember first seeing him pimp product on TV. 434 Who will own/inhabit the countryside? --
"Those who provide for the cities. The countryside is resources. "Posted by: t-bird

True, but fewer people are owning more and more land. And kids of farmers move to the city (and rent the acres if they don't sell it), unless they are one of the big farms.

imo, much of the subsidy and tax structure has aided the bigger farmer more than the small guy, and as with everything else, the bigger they get, the more they buy political power to make sure they get more power.

If we head toward "the elite" owning all the land, and hiring cheap foreign labor to do the work ... it will only exacerbate the current working class, ownership class problem. Laws will continue to be made to protect the "elite" from the struggles of the deplorable.

Diogenes,
Just to shore up your resolve to go either to your MD or to Urgent Care, what you have is cellulitis.
And it can get really ugly very fast. I get cellulitis every time I get stung by a yellow jacket and so I an extra cautious. One sting on the leg, or foot, or hand, and the entire area will swell up red, hot , to the point that I can't put weight on the leg or use my hand, etc.

You may be in for a course of antibiiotics as this is typically a bacterial infection from the sting Do NOT ignore this. For emphasis, look up cellulitis on the internet and instantly you'll see dozens of photos resembling your hand.

Also, when the swelling finally goes down, ( that will take place with intense itching that is painful to scratch) your skin will peel off the top layers.

Welcome to the club.

2. I thought a 2 year old had chugged a bottle of it and took him to the ER, they were like "meh." He'd poured it out under the bed.
3. My son had a "red man syndrome" in the hospital with an antibiotic, they gave him a big dose of benedryl

Got some sort of infection in a finger, went to the doctor. Teenager at the time.

Doctor had him put his hand on the table and distracted him somehow. While he was distracted, Doctor pulled out a cleaver and chopped off his finger.

Food for thought!

Increasingly prevalent with bee stings. And for the record, YES you can OD on benedryl. Do not chug benedryl. If you don't believe me call poison control and ask what happens if you drink a couple bottles.

519 Comfortably Numb is one of their best songs and one of my favorites, but there is a special place in my soul for "High Hopes". Unfortunately that album has a ode to climate change too.

...

I taught Genesis 26 this past week in Sunday school.

Most of Isaac's adult life is in that one chapter. He's in other parts of Genesis, but more as Abraham's son or Jacob's father--that is, those narrative parts are less about him and more about someone else.

TLR is that Isaac at the start of the chapter gets all the really cool promises that Abraham gets, and then spends a long time, seemingly, getting pushed from one place to another as he tries to find a place to live in peace. He does become rich but that essentially works against him as people drive him away because of it.

It stands out to me, now that I'm 29, that even for the Jewish patriarchs who had God guiding and blessing them, life was pretty hard and I would think confusing and discouraging for long seasons.

Not exactly encouraging in the sense of hey things are sure to get better, but at least it's good to know this is normal and it's not just me.

Life on earth is but a grain of sand in a thousand Sahara deserts. Have to keep that in mind when reviewing how life is going.

Anyway, what this means is that we're not going to get a good biography of Obama until he's been dead for at least 30 years, probably 50. The history of the early decades of the 21st century won't get a fair and full shake until the 2070s or so.
