The following in an exclusive excerpt from the forthcoming book, Justice on Trial: The Kavanaugh Confirmation and the Future of the Supreme Court by Mollie Hemingway and Carrie Severino, to be published on Tuesday July 9 by Regnery. It had been a rough couple of years in the Senate for Jeff Flake. A conservative from the small-government and free trade wing of the GOP, he couldn’t get over President Trump’s brash political style, even as the president remained popular with Republican voters. His anti-Trump manifesto, Conscience of a Conservative, sealed his electoral fate. Shortly after it was published in the summer of 2017, he announced that he would not run for reelection. John McCain, the senior senator from Arizona, died Aug. 25, and the country had gone through weeks of remembrances of the former prisoner of war who had played a major role in politics for 35 years. McCain was particularly well regarded in Washington for his opposition to Trump, and Flake thought of him as a father figure and mentor.Quite the look into the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings. It is looking at our current modernity and what it means and what created it, as well as previous periods that were similar in growth, freedom and innovation. He names the Roman Republic and Song Dynasty in China as examples, and goes on to discuss how, unlike our own, those periods only lasted 100-150 years before collapsing. It's a thin metal fastener with a hole at the top and threads at the bottom that is placed over a plastic piece to allow the plastic to be fastened to a frame.
---- ---- | plastic goes here ----th---- where the "th" is threads Posted by: Chuck C at July 10, 2019 11:10 PM (zCabI) That is called a "J-nut". Stamped out of thin spring steel, and there is an immense variety of them. Some are made to take machine screw threads, and some accept only the coarse threads found on sheet metal screws. Good hardware stores have assortments of them, but the best selection of such can be found at autobody supply dealers. Those are the stores that sell automotive paint, body filler, and all sorts of tools for the autobody trade. Incidentally, if any of the 'Rons or 'Ettes have kids that don't want to waste years in college, the autobody trade is pretty damned lucrative. Trump signed legislation designed to help people with renal issues. One of those people would be me.
One of the three main goals of this legislation is to make it easier for dialysis patients to perform home dialysis rather than going to a center. I'm a little uncomfortable with that. I had originally considered home dialysis, but I was pitch forked into starting dialysis with no more preparation than having the fistula created on my left lower arm. I was not happy about this. I have been going to the dialysis center for over four months now. It has taken some adjustment on my part and theirs. But I have come to the conclusion that the center is a positive. Half the staff are registered nurses, the other half specially trained technicians. The staff works very hard to make a crappy situation as pleasant as possible. They work even harder to try to eliminate any chance of infection. And I know every member of the staff is capable of handling any emergency that might arise. Nor are they the least bit hesitant about asking someone a little more skilled than they are for help. (I am a particularly hard stick because my one vein curves instead of laying straight.) As an added benefit, my renal doctor makes rounds at the center once a month, and one of his assistants, a nurse practioner, makes a separate visit on a monthly basis. On a monthly schedule, my blood is drawn for all the information my doctor needs to keep abreast of my condition. All this is done without me having to run to the lab and the doctor. I'm really not certain doing home dialysis would match all that the center offers. I hope this does not turn into one of those situations where I am eventually forced to do something so vital to my existence. Posted by: Captain Josepha Sabin at July 10, 2019 11:22 PM (IDj3y) 281

As I look back on my life, I realize that God gave me chances with women
that most men don't get. For example, there were 5 magazine centerfolds who crossed my path: 1. Monique St Pierre - Playmate of the Year in 1979. My brother worked at Custom Hi FI in Houston Tx in December of 1978 when they had a sales promotion featuring her. The owner of Custom Hi Fi - after looking at everyone on the staff picked my brother and me (He knew me from some electronics work I had done for the store) as the people least likely to go Bevis and Butthead around her, and asked us to be her escorts during the promotion. My brother wound up spending most of the day selling things - so I wound up being her escort. Interesting person - psychiatric technician in her native Germany. Breath takingly beautiful in person. 2. Carina Persson - Playmate of the month in Aug 1983. I had just started working as a bouncer at a topless club when I met her. She was from Sweden. She is the only one of the five I have a picture with - sorry, it is NSFW, as she was topless in the shot. It was from this picture that I truly understood just how much better looking women are than men. 3. Amy Lynn Baxter - Penthouse Pet for June 1990. At the time I met her she was seeing the Actor James Woods. I actually had a date with her - we went to breakfast after work one night. Her issue of the magazine was on the newsstands at the time, with her picture on the cover. The restaurant we went to had a newsstand, and I asked the cashier if he recognized her. He went kind of bug eyed when he realized I wasn't joking. 4. Ronnie Dawn - Penthouse Pet for May 1991. On a Friday late in October of 1991 I watched her leave the club a couple of hours early - with another dancer, to go out to have a good time. Two beautiful young girls out to flirt with guys and enjoy themselves. Two hours later Ronnie was shot and killed at a Shell station where she was filling up her car. Her murder has never been solved. A couple of years later I saw the dancer Ronnie had left with and asked her what happened. She told me that one of the guys they met was this Black guy with a new BMW. Ronnie had done her usual flirting with him, but he wouldn't take no for an answer when the girls left the club where they met him. He followed them to the filling station where he shot Ronnie. I asked the dancer if she had told the police that story? She said yes, but they weren't too interested in it. 5. Anna Nichole Smith - Playmate of the Year in 1993 and eventually one of the richest women in the world. When she danced at the club, we knew her by her stage name of "Robin". I saw that whole romance with oilman Howard Marshall build up. In fairness to Anna she waited until she was a multi-millionaire herself before she married him. Once again, spectacular looking in person. She really loved her son, and it pretty much destroyed her when he died of a drug overdose. Posted by: An Observation at July 10, 2019 11:24 PM (+WKux) 288

169 TonyPete your vehicle is only a bit over average age according to some media story a couple weeks ago. They said the average vehicle age was 11, 12 in western states. My 2008 WV was under average age when I bought it last year. Its still young for being in a western state. And I thought I was being so frugal buying an older car.
Posted by: paleRider is simply irredeemable I can remember when people replaced their cars after 3-5 years. I never did that. I've always kept them much longer. Are cars built to last longer? ...LadyL, would it help to take a defensive driving course or something? might give you some more confidence, help you to focus on the proactive tricks pros use.
Posted by: booknlass at July 10, 2019 11:07 PM (xIKXj) No--I'm a VERY experienced driver. It's that I don't trust other drivers at all right now. Plus I have a new car. I thought I would hate all the drivers assist features, but they are really comforting right now! It's just going to take some time to get over it. Posted by: Ladyl urgent prayer needed for Laura and Allison at July 10, 2019 11:11 PM (TdMsT) Might I offer a (hopefully) constructive alternative? Rather than "defensive driving" (which, in my opinion, is fine for beginners, but just makes everyone else, slow, dumb and way the hell TOO dependent on JUST the brake pedal.) The true "skill and safety" option is a High Performance Driving School Weekend. Bondurant in CA is a good one, Skip Barber Racing School in D/FW another. They DO have courses at the basic level, which are designed to make the average street driver a superior car "handler". This means instead of reacting to every damn thing on the road with "brakes", you'll learn the skills to steer HARD around a hazard, or how to accelerate away from an incipient incident, and let it occur behind you, where you're safely away from it. Yeah, you'll also learn how to apex a curve, and master both increasing and decreasing radius corners (on and off ramp cloverleafs, for example) Much as I disdain "brakes" above, they're also going to teach you how to REALLY use your brakes, and most importantly, WHEN. You come away from a weekend course as described, and you're GOING to be one of THE safest drivers on the road. PERIOD. Posted by: booknlass at July 10, 2019 11:36 PM (xIKXj) Plastic welding, if it is thermoplastic; flexible body filler, backed up by a thin metal or plastic patch, if it is thermosetting plastic. Thermoplastic: can be heated near or to the melting point, reshaped, and regains its strength once cooled. Thermosetting plastic: either burns before it melts, or breaks down upon melting. The aforementioned autobody supply shops have tools and supplies to fix either type of plastic, and both are used in automotive trims and bumpers these days. Their sales people can probably look at your car, and identify which method can be used to fix it. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 10, 2019 11:49 PM (abNpZ) 344

ULY 5--The 64-year-old woman arrested for groping and grinding on a younger man outside a restaurant in a Florida retirement community has cut a plea deal in connection with her unwanted sexual advances, according to court records.
Marrian Ann Zambrano pleaded no contest this week to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct and was ordered to pay $303 in court costs. Court costs? She didn't even go to court. Bullshit. The article is pretty funny, though: As detailed in an arrest report, the victim told police that Zambrano, who appeared intoxicated, approached him outside of the R.J. Gator's restaurant and "grabbed him by his 'crotch' and began touching him in that area." The man told cops that it felt like Zambrano "was trying to lower his pants" during the 7:45 PM encounter. Zambrano, the man said, was also "trying to dance on him, during which time she rubbed her breasts and body against his person." Mid-grind, Zambrano asked the man "to come home with her," police reported. The victim, who declined Zambrano's invitation, said she also hugged him, kissed his neck, and whispered in his ear. LOL. SOmeone should arrest this little pussy "victim". An old lady is drunk and hanging on you. So just smile and walk away. What sort of asshole calls the cops or presses charges? What a total douchebag. A bunch of old guys should have beaten this little pissant to a pulp. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at July 11, 2019 12:00 AM (bOCwl) Posted by: booknlass at July 11, 2019 12:00 AM (xIKXj) 366
Last night somebody was talking about couldn't play videos on their browsers. Someone suggested Chrome, but whoever it was (Jim?) didn't want to run anything with Google's spyware. Well, there are actually two flavors of the browser, Chrome and then Chromium. The latter is the open source browser, and the former is Google's proprietary build of that code base. Chromium is actually what many Linux distros use by default, although there's Linux versions of Chrome proper. Chromium still has some Google hooks in it, and there is a fork of it that is completely "un-Googled", or de-Googled. Here is Woolyss, which maintains links to the latest builds of these Chromium forks: https://chromium.woolyss.com/ There are 64 and 32 bit Windows binaries, but Mac binaries. Make sure to get the "Marmaduke" fork, which will say "unGoogled". All the Google hooks have been removed, and you've otherwise got the Chrome browser. My own defensive driving tip for having driven OTR for twenty years. Be aware of the traffic around you. Then imagine the dumbest, stupidist thing that those drivers could possibly do. Prepare for it because they very seldom fail to disappoint. Like on a three lane boulevard making a right turn from the far left lane with less than 200 hundred feet at 45 mph without a signal. I amaze Mrs. Old Blue when we're driving because I will often tell her what bone headed move someone will make before they do it. And then they do it.

I saw it fly out of Norman Wells, NWT one time with a load of drilling equipment. Had to fly downstream (north) a ways, make a big U-turn, and then fly south a long way up the valley to get altitude. One of the owners of that company is an old-car guy, and I saw him in May at the Red Deer Swap meet. Got briefly introduced. Posted by: Just the Punchline at July 11, 2019 12:32 AM (abNpZ) 448

Posted by: Rusty Nail at July 11, 2019 12:49 AM (lIQJE) 494
In 1923, a senior radio officer at Croydon Airport in London named Frederick Stanley Mockford was asked to come up with a word that would indicate distress and one that would be easily understood by all pilots and ground staff in case of emergency. The word 'help' was obviously not an option since it is a word that's being used in normal, everyday conversations. Because Mockford was mainly dealing with the traffic between Croydon and Le Bourget Airport in Paris, France he had both English and French in mind. That's why, he proposed the unique word 'Mayday' that derives from the French expression venez m'aider (come help me) but also sounds like an English word. From el 'net:
"Roger" was "phonetic" for "R" (received and understood". In radio communication, a "spelling alphabet" (often mistakenly called a "phonetic alphabet) is used to avoid confusion between similarly sounding letters. In the previously used US spelling alphabet, R was Roger, which in radio voice procedure means "Received". While in the current spelling alphabet (NATO), R is now Romeo, Roger has remained the response meaning "received" in radio voice procedure. In the US military, it is common to reply to another's assertion with "Roger that", meaning: "I agree". AOP, IIRC the Japanese didn't even have radios in most planes by Pearl Harbor. Usually just the leader, who used hand signals with his wing mates - also good security practice that was used by everyone in certain situations after radios were in all planes.
Probably for radio silence reasons - though again I thought I read that they lacked radios in most planes - the first wave of Japanese planes was supposed to have its final approach order [which type of aircraft went in first] determined by Fuchida's judgement of whether they'd achieved surprise. Which he would signal by firing one, or two, flares at a given point along the way. He f**ked it up - forget, think he wasn't sure that his single flare was seen, so he shot another .... oops, 2 flares instead of one.
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at July 11, 2019 01:10 AM (CDGwz) "Roger" also means to screw (though I've only heard it used homo contexts). The original GP (General Purpose, 4x4) "Jeep" though, was a heavier Dodge 1/2 ton, open passenger truck.
You know the profile of the "door" cutaway on the more well-known 1/4 ton "Jeep" that we all know and love? Picture a typical Dodge truck hood, fender and nose from that era. On the bodywork though, that "cutaway" was the same for the driver's row and repeated on the rear passenger row. And some kind of "bustle" type open carrier behind the rear seat, extending down to the rear bumper. They called that a "Jeep", and simply carried the nomenclature forward to the Willys variant. Late thirties, very early '40s, in General Issue, it predated the Willys by nearly a full decade. Simple as that, and that IS the history of the term. I've read far too extensively on this to persuade me otherwise. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at July 11, 2019 01:26 AM (QzJWU) 569

I got interested in "jeep". The G.P. theory is a common one, but it is dubious. You can read detailed explanation debunking. "Jeep" was used as far back as WWI, before it came to mean the famous WWII vehicle. There was a cartoon character in the '30s called Eugene the Jeep, who had extradimensional powers that allowed him to go anywhere. All he said was "Jeep". "Jeep, jeep, jeep." So Jeep means something that could go anywhere. Anyway, jeep was used as far back as WWI and a common meaning was some new recruit or person of untested mettle. Military mechanics began to use to mean a new, untested vehicle. It was somewhat pejorative. And then the Eugene the Jeep character came out. There are other accounts of vehicles called jeeps during this period. So that's likely how the vehicle we know today became to be called *the* jeep. Posted by: rhomboid at July 11, 2019 01:23 AM (QDnY+) I have a book of recollections of Canadian flyers from WWII. One story concerned the crew of a bomber (possibly more than one) that hit a target in Norway, and because of German fighter activity, went on to land in northern Russia. They were met on the unimproved airstrip by Russian soldiers in a Jeep. One of the crew could speak a little Russian, and he remarked on the good fortune that America was now sending Jeeps to Russia. The driver became quite upset, and insisted that the Jeep was a Russian invention, made in a secret factory east of the Ural Mountains...despite the fact that all the placards on the dash were in English, only. I have read a number of serious books and magazine articles about them, and I don't think I have found one that makes a serious claim that one of the possible origins is right, and all the others wrong. I am guessing perhaps all the origin stories played a role, and there was some sort of preference cascade that made "Jeep" the common name for the vehicle. I believe the term "blitz buggy" was in vogue for a very short time. And even today, that little trailer with a "fifth wheel" on it, used to link one semi-trailer behind another? a "jeep trailer". Iran knows that the West won't fight. Persians can smell that sort of shit from miles away. They've been trying to goad us into a fight (that we should have obliged) for decades, now. Reagan should have reduced Tehran to dust - though I give Reagan some leeway in that he was dealing with the Cold War as the first priority. So should have George W., and he had no excuse not to, especially seeing how Iran was attacking us friggin day in Iraq. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at July 11, 2019 01:55 AM (bOCwl) 619

Yellow red green were the primary colors for the shells. Let's say that the forward battery fired red dyed shells and the aft battery fired yellow. Your first salvo the red dyed shells were 50 yards short and the yellow dyed shells were 50 yards long. Then you could fire for effect in the middle. Posted by: Old Blue at July 11, 2019 01:46 AM (VNmG1) She, and her three-ship screen of VERY FCKIN SMALL Destroyer Escorts (DE), turned back a Japanese Heavy Cruiser and attached fleet...much larger fleet, in that battle. The Japanese were convinced that they were being opposed by much heavier ships, and many more of them. That's how fierce the U.S. counter-attack against the Japanese ships was. That engagement by itself, may damn well be the epitome of Heroism in a single U.S. Naval engagement, for all time. This was the naval equivalent to Angincourt. ....And hold their manhoods cheap while any speaks That fought with us My late ex-father in law, was a Coral Sea sailor. "Full scale war" with Iran will be a very minor, and brief, affair, by our standards, and also won't/wouldn't dethrone Trump.
And I think even the regime understands there's almost no gas in the tank on "unifying" external threats - the regime's foreign adventures are the object of mockery and contempt in public demonstrations, everyone knows any tussle will be provoked by their side, and Persians don't have the "victimhood" instinct that can be helpful in rallying a population. Posted by: rhomboid at July 11, 2019 02:04 AM (QDnY+) 633
Jim, the destroyers in that battle beat back the Yamato. Beautiful ship by the way. But you're right, the admiral in charge was overwhelmed by just the destroyers that he thought he was facing a much larger force and retired. It was a close fought battle.

But I plead "bourbon" as to forgetting the Yamato reference. A confession? Those last two capitol Japanese Battleships, were as beautiful as ever crested the waves. It's a damn shame they didn't survive the wars. Our Iowa class ships had FAR superior technology by that point, irrespective of the larger Japanese main guns. Leyte gulf in justice to Japanese admiral. The Japanese main force of ships was overwhelming to the American landing force. HOWEVER, the Americans had many jeep carriers and quite a few attack planes to launch. Had the Americans been on the ball and had their aircraft fueled and armed, ready for a fight at a moments notice, the Jap fleet might have become extinct right then and there. Neither the Japanese nor American historians gave the Admiral his due as to what he was up against. Nonetheless Captain Evans should be in American naval history as being at the very least an equal to John Paul Jones if not even exceeding.

My Dixon 42" ZTR mower has a cone drive that is, in effect, two continuously variable transmissions, one driving each rear wheel. Each can be shifted from neutral to forward or reverse independently of the other. And the harder you push the lever, the faster its wheel goes, up to a maximum.
It looks strange as can be, and it works amazingly well. The only thing it doesn't do well is sidehills. Because the castered front wheels want to "fall" downhill, I have to do a constant shuffle between right tiller and left tiller to keep it moving parallel to the slope, which is a swale in my case. That may be in large part because the Demonic party has always been truly racist, slaveholding, desirous of establishing castes and social tiers that by their constant projection on to innocent parties the intent is to diminish those words to diminish their guilt. Both. Amazon has several aftermarket weather resistant housings for them as well. I usually use the command hook, velcro picture strips to mount the metal disk on the window frame under the awning overhang. And the camera itself is light enough that they will stay right where you put the strips. And removal of the strips when done is painless and easy with no damage to the mounting surfaces.
