I don't think there's anything particularly weird about a pilot being a fan of flight sims. Not that I know many, but the ones I know have a setup that's about equal to what he had. It's not a huge investment as gaming rigs go.

The difference is who, on paper, is responsible for paying for it. Much like a VAT, or the gas tax, or a soda tax, or a rain tax, or a tax on Thingy.
It ends up being more expensive for consumers because, surprise surprise, the merchants tend to pass along increased costs while holding onto any savings. And the funds go into the federal government, for good or for ill.
But if tariffs are bad, because it increases costs to consumers, then they should be all about repealing gas taxes, cigarette taxes, sales taxes, alcohol taxes, etc.
No. Those [Parent][Copulators] will happily increase the tax on those, and many more things. But God help you if you try and tax something from another country.

On a side note, I seem to remember one of the grievances of the South prior to the Civil War had to do with taxes. Might have been Tariffs on European goods, to make the more expensive compared to the goods from the North.

the tariffs were a major issue in the south since the Northern manufacturing states like them because they kept out British and French manufacturers, and kept the price high for manufactured products AND made the northern manufactured goods more desirable, since they were cheaper without the tariffs.
The tariff issue was not resolved until the Congress landed on the happy medium of making it meaningless by instituting the withholding income tax. Which is even greater scope cost and invasiveness.
Boy I am glad we did that too, think of all the unrest the tariff was creating.

Listened to a guy talking about immigrating here after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The first several years before he got married, he was working here part of the year and going back to Ukraine.
He talks about being shocked and disturbed at how friendly Americans were to foreign strangers from the hated USSR. He thought that we had some weird ulterior motive until he got to know Americans, and explaining to people back home that Americans were strangely nice, and didn't actually want to kill them all.

I am not a pig expert, but I can contribute an anecdote. Europeans have been dealing with pigs and cold cuts for a long long time.
I have an on again off again in Italy Italian girlfriend (mostly off, but twenty years of failing ain't nothin'). Her mother came out with a cold cut once that was amazinig. I wish I remembered the name of it.
It's a cured cut from a wild boar, from a specific province in Spain, that only eats chestnuts. These people have been fetishizing how to eat pig for a thousand years.

Thor and Loki were actual characters in Norse mythology. They weren't so much on the sides of good and evil -- the dichotomy was order versus chaos. Ragnarok was the final war between the two, and chaos won. Everything was destroyed.

Russia has no natural boundaries, so their tendency is to grab as much territory as they can, because you never know when the worm is going to turn and the Enemy will be at the gates of Moscow.
It's a lot simpler when you have an ocean boundary, and have a similar country to the north (which you are much more powerful than), and a less similar country to the south (which you are also much more powerful than).

Yup. We are very different from all of them. America, outside of the land on this continent that G-d promised to us from sea to sea, has never had any interest in taking foreign lands. We could have taken all of central and south America if we cared. We could have taken the pacific. We could have had anything but we didn't want any of it.
All America ever wanted to do with foreigners was business. We like to work and we like to make and sell stuff. We like to have places stable enough that they can lead civilized lives and make money and spend it on shit we sell! We tried to stabilize central and south american societies by the boatload ... just to make them rich enough to do business with us ... but they just wouldn't have it. We didn't want their countries. We didn't want their stuff. We wanted exactly the opposite, for them to buy our stuff.
But almost all of the world fails to understand this because America is really one of the only places that operates with this mindset (or used to) the same way that all the world fails to really understand our governmental system because we have always been, and remain, pretty much unique in the world (the way America has always liked it!).

Often, in the past, the left was in favor of relaxing laws, that is, less government.
He can define it his way, but it is an over simplification. It would be better if he just redefined a new term and dropped the Left and Right stuff.
On fascism, it is important to clarify that if you just look at populism, then marxism is on the left, and fascism is on the right (historically). Both are big government. Neither is related to the US Right. In US terms, both are on the Left, but in populist terms, they are right and left. The Left looks to blame the rich, the Right looks to blame foreigners. But that is a separate, limited perspective.

That (Egypt air) seemed more jihaidiot than just suicide. The Capt of 370 didn't seem to be one of that breed. He let the plane go for 6 plus hours. I got a cordless drill/driver the other day for driving some screws for that deer fence we're putting up. It was Lowe's special Kobalt, 20V unit, $99, with a charge a 2 A-hr battery.
I must say I'm impressed. I was dismissive of cordless tools, remembering the 1st generation back in the late '80s and into the 90s. Not much torque and the batteries wouldn't last, both in terms of charge holding and durability.
So I had just mostly stayed away from them.
But this this one has great torque, driving those 3" wood screws nicely, and the battery holds up.

Oh no, no, no. They kick ass these days. Lithium batteries made a huge difference, and for crap like even LAWN MOWERS brushless motors are equally huge.
The only problem is the price, and the fact that the batteries are a HUGE chunk of that price.
By the way, I have a brushless motor out of a 60v lawn mower that had other problems, the motor appears to be good but the controller was dead, I'm not EE enough to figure out the control logic. So it sits until I have a bucketful of round tuits.

This one has the brushless motor. That term is basically an understatement. It's essentially an inverter driving an AC synchronous motor. The controller switches current between the phase coils as the rotor rotates.
And it adjusts frequency on the fly to match speed. It's essentially a small hand held variable speed AC drive.
The only thing I notice with this, is a little delay when you squeeze the trigger. When it's been off for a few seconds, I think the electronics go to sleep or something to save power, and wake back up when you first depress the trigger.
It will respond instantly if you haven't waited too long.

I have several 20 volt cordless tools with the regular brush-type permanent-magnet motors. They work great, and last a long time on a charge. I haven't had a chance to try the brushless motor types, yet. Another factor in the improvement of cordless tools is the use of rare-earth magnets in the motors: greater field strength in less space, with less mass. Translates to less losses in the motor.

bugles turn out to be corn and coconut oil...which is nice saturated fat, if you care about that sort of stuff. The only better fat for frying would probably be tallow.

Inverters do -- I don't know about this, as I haven't tried a radio near it.
I have an ESAB MIG cart, inverter driven. That thing would tear up reception. Arcs can do that themselves, but this thing gets it all over the mains.
The way the house and shop are wired is as follows. I ran three-phase to the shop, and so Mama Duke pulled all three phases out. The House is on A, call it. Or black, for the black, red, blue standard phase color scheme.
It's 208V, and I originally had it between A and B. Well, that tore up the TV and radios in the house. Going right through the primary on the transformers. It's a short distance between the shop bank and the house transformer.
I moved it between B and C, and that fixed it.

I almost got 480Y/277V, but the equipment would've too expensive. I may yet put in 480V in somewhere, though.
208Y/120V is one of the standard 3-phases. I wanted a high leg, but Mrs. Duke wouldn't do that anymore. I wanted 240V to run a lot of my single phase 230V motors.
I ended up just putting some booster transformers in, a 3-unit auto-delta configuration. It was a bit odd ball, because that will give a phase shift, but it didn't matter. I've blown some minds with that setup, and it's not something done much because of said phase shift.

The reason that ESAB is so noisy is the inverter front end. It's basically a switching power supply, PWM. THe control is done on the high voltage, lower current side, not the output side.
The thing has a stick welding mode, which puts it in constant current mode.
One time I was stick welding with it, and noticed something funny. Hot and sweaty as hell. I managed to touch the hot output side. I was grounded really, but I noticed this crazy "tasting the fillings in your teeth" sensation.
That was some of that high frequency switching shit, I deduced. I had enough capacitive coupling to get a little high frequency current flowing through me.

It's stopped here, but we got quite a lot of rain earlier. I missed the biggest storm of all. Driving home from work I noticed a lot of water in the street. Then I couldn't find my recycling container. These are the ones with lids and wheels, so they're not little. Lately they're had a tendency to leave it blocking my driveway, which pisses me off. Tonight it was nowhere to be seen.
So I was all ready to call the trash company tomorrow to bitch about it when I got a phone call from my neighbor three doors down saying he might have mine. It must have been quite a storm to move it that far.

In all the mentions of Cap'n Crunch, no one mentioned Cap'n Crunch with Crunchberries. That is the only real Cap'n Crunch. I also like Honey Nut Cheerios, not the bland regular Cheerios. And frosted flakes right out of the box as no milk is necessary (and ensoggens it too much anyway).
Now onto Spam. My Mom always had cans of Spam and the corned beef in a can (bully beef) on hand as it was cheap back then, with a long shelf life and readily available for a quickie meal. The canned corned beef I no longer eat but I will spring for the occasional can of Spam, but only when on sale as it is now ridiculous in price.
My Mom would slice the Spam, put in a saucepan, cover it with white vinegar and add brown sugar, making a poor man's b-b-q Spam; I guess that was a WWII recipe as fresh meat was severely rationed. Cook it down to a thick syrup. I still love that. The cooked slices make great sandwiches, too.
For those being snobby about Spam, when you're really hungry in a SHingTF situation, you'll eat it. Better than tree bark.
Now about that canned corned beef hash. Anything canned with potatoes, including plain ol' canned potatoes, is just not right. How friggin' hard is it to cook potatoes? The canned corned beef hash always reminded me of the Ken-L Ration we fed my dog when I was a wee lad. Even though my dog loved Ken-L Ration, and probably that canned corned beef hash stuff if she was ever fed it, I won't eat Ken-L Ration, either. Although if I'm hungry enough, who knows? Canned tuna is basically canned cat food and people eat canned tuna all the time.

Spam, hot dogs, lunch meats, are made of cuts of the animal that they can't sell as a whole. Yes, trimmings from the hams and other tougher muscles. Read the ingredient labels if it has one. There are some hot dogs out there that contain heart and tongue trimmings or other things.

Still doesn't work. It remains just an imposition of a particular ideology on the events. Such models "work" only for those whose views are imposed.
For instance, a current leftist would see such a model as "working" if the x-axis were race, and the y-axis as gender. It's really just imposing a priori notions on reality. And that is no less so if we are inclined to accept the assumptions, as if we reject them.
There are probably an infinite number of such models we could construct. Let me cite one hypothetic: highly structured vs loosely structured. That can be significant. It is the most obvious difference between our political system and the British, for instance, cutting across the (relative) similarities. And there are some who will prefer the latter; Mark Steyn has said things implying this, and F H Buckley has pretty much come out and said he does.
BTW, I'm inclined to think that the alt-right resembles more the Old, orthodox Marxist Left, than the New. The resemblances to the latter seem to me to occur precisely where the New Left still retains Marxist doctrines, like ideology as superstructure. Well, there is the one point on which alt-R and New-L agree, in not putting economics at the very center. Of course I may be wrong, but in any case this is a good example of where one's model can get in the way of accuracy.

I have seen 2 or 3 articles lately about how peoples fathers (grandfathers) were a big part of WWII effort since they were exempt from draft as being older and with children. What kind of bullshit is that? My Grandfather was 30 and had 2 kids and was wounded on the way to the Battle of the Bulge.
Just say your father or GF had an important desk job or factory job but to use some kind of excuse is just fukn stupid.

Little snippets of the thesis are commonly portrayed "America's civilizing mission, to go out into wild and strange lands" based on Puritanical privilege and such.
Now, the particular sermon Butt based his idea on was a 1670 Election sermon, by a fellow named Danforth.
America certainly had empire-dreams, civilizing dreams, etc. and they weren't always kind. No doubt there. But to base that action, and draw it out all the way out to America fighting communists in Vietnam on Danforth's sermon is major academic gas-lighting.

Pay attention, esp, to the first two sentences, where Danforth clearly lays forth HIS idea of the Puritan mission, which was to retain the right to worship FREELY, and as they saw it, purely.
