Saturday Morning Coffee Break

Look-at-you.png

***

Ahh Saturday morning my little sunbeams. Let us take a look at a few stories that didn't get too much attention here at the AoSHQ.

***

  • Brewing company goes SJW and gets sued.

  • There has to be better perks at this job.

  • Obviously this municipality never saw ads preventing this type of crime.

  • It's never too late to go back to school.

  • How do you say, "You have some 'splaining to do Lucy" in Pakistani?

Enjoy these stories or something else in this open thread. Just a couple of rules: 'Ettes don't have cooties, so be nice to them; no running with sharp objects and be nice to one another.

    Have a great weekend!!!

Hmm...no...rather weighed and examined in light of the Bible.
Of course, I speak as an orthodox Protestant.

    ---
Obviously, I was painting with a broad brush there. There's lots of variation within Protestantism.

The Puritans famously didn't celebrate Christmas because it was not in the Bible, and persecuted those who did.

And of course we now have groups like the United Methodists who simply excise text they don't wish to follow.

My point was that French-isms legalistic approach is powerless in the face of the left's remorseless redefining everything.

    His
fallback position that "sincerely religious" beliefs should be respected
is as sturdy as a paper bag in a hurricane. After all, what standing
can one's fidelity to an imaginary being have vs the very real
*feelings* of someone who finds those beliefs hateful?

French-ist liberalism would have been powerless before original Mormonism, just as it wilts in the face of Islam today.

19 The best thing I heard about John Astin came from Sean Astin, who said that John Astin was always a father to him, always took care of him, always helped him in the business when he got older, and was the best influence in his early life - even though John Astin always knew Sean was not his biological son. He always treated as his son anyways. That takes a good man to do that.

crazier than that, even - saw an interview with Sean Astin about it a couple years ago, when some testing finally revealed who his biological father actually was. (some forgotten Hollywood gigolo or something) It was after Patty Duke died (2016) and Sean revealed that the hardest part of his life had been growing up with his mother's recurring bouts of severe mental illness, and she had admitted that when he was conceived, she was drunk and drugged most of the time and wasn't even sure who she'd been in bed with. After all that, John Astin still loved her and took her in and stabilized her, and took care of her child like he was his own.

That was probably the last time my husband and I went to a movie. The kids have been individually with friends or on field trips over the years, averaging once maybe twice a year each.

And we saw the leading men and women doing upstanding and honorable things in their films and TV shows. Even though we knew that was fiction, the impression carried over in our minds.

Nowadays, leading characters can get up to pretty dishonorable things. See Bryan Cranston as Walter White in Breaking Bad. He doesn't go undercover within a drug ring to break it up; he's part of it, eventually comes to be a leading drug kingpin himself, and admits at the very end that he liked doing it. Much as I love the series and the character, it's realistic and horrifying -- the kind of role that actors who specialized in villains would have taken on in the Sixties, say, or earlier.

    It's worse than that.

They/we are bringing i9n people, uneducated, illiterate, innumerate, with different mores and socialization,

who immediately go on welfare and will be a net drain on the our systems for the rest of their lives.

So, to recap, people who don't pay and will never ever pay into the system or, at best, never pay back the amounts of public money they use,

are draining resources directly from the working and middle class workers who are paying for their "lockbox" retirement and medical care.

How exactly is this supposed to work?

The more of the illiterate, uneducated you bring into the system, the faster it will go broke.

    Math. How does it work?

So a couple times me and the group we were with would ask him about it, and he'd say beautiful place, he loved his family, had a happy childhood. Conservatives are not made like this, and keep believing the Left will come to its senses, or some great umpire in the sky will call foul and intervene. Because we hold to sanity, reason and faith. We cannot believe people like this exist or would do this to the ends that they do them.

(at least Jussie Smollett remembered when it happened)

Although I saw even yesterday some of the prog's are already disappointed in her - they were asking "you gonna file charges? you gonna file charges?" and she just said "Oh no, because, ha! too much of a bother!!!!" or something equally stupid. (and why even bother pointing out the stupidity of the progs in not knowing that no, you can't wait 25 years and then do that.)

Posted by: Quequeeg the Harpooner at June 22, 2019 09:30 AM (9X60i)

Agreed about Benghazi, but wasn't really thinking about that. Rather, Qaddafi had been tamed before that and was cooperating, mostly. Libya still had somewhat of a social structure, Now, after Hillary's Excellent Adventure in helping to destroy him, Libya has turned into MadMaxistan and it is a no-go zone for everyone. Much the same thing has happened in Lebanon over the years, where every strong leader has been assassinated and the country is "run" by a collection of militia's and foreign intelligence services.

It's why Israel doesn't kill all of the Hamas leadership in Gaza - it's better to know who's in charge, even if they're bad, than to have to deal with absolute chaos on your doorstep.

I would argue, don't take out a leader unless you've got someone primed and ready to go in and take his place. Because if you don't, his replacement will always be worse.

Example - Maduro in Venezuela. Sure, he's an ignorant bum deserving of death. But if he's killed in an assassination, his replacement is going one of the Cartel representatives who run the Army, and it may be months before we even find out who it is. No point in killing the leader unless it's part of a plan to remake the country, and that's something we don't want to get caught doing anymore.

Yeah, I come across stuff like this every now and again. Paul Sorvino -- didn't see much of him for a long time -- he explained that he had enough money so he was going to not work so hard and be a father to his kid.

Then there's Don Adams -- Secret Agent 86 of CONTROL -- who used to be a Marine Corps drill instructor.

187 It's interesting to see how pants used to go higher up. Bogart wears 'em pretty high, but there was also more fabric down there.

I think it was a function of suspenders being so common. Also, the cut of the suit-coats and frock coats.

Just a different way of wearing them.

I have to say, I like 40s fashions better than the modern ones. People actually dressed to go out.

How the hell they ever mass produced those things is beyond me, as reassembly seems to follow no logical sequence.

255 When the pigtail bulbs first showed up, we bought two.

One went in a desk lamp. Within days, the cats, who had never knocked over anything like a lamp, knocked over the lamp and broke the bulb. Of course, we had to evacuate the house for a month while the hazmat teams cleaned up. (Haha, we vac'd up the breakage, which they tell you not to do.)

The other bulb is in a closet where the catboxes are, hanging well up out of reach of cats. It's been on, 24/7, for many years. Still going. I'll give it that.

Not like I'd ever buy another one, of course.

Fair point, but generating heat is a terrible selling point for a light source. Anything on the right side of the equation that isn't light is waste. LEDs don't generate much themselves, but to be fair, the rectifiers aren't "free" in the energy sense.

IIRC some municipality around here replaced the incandescent traffic lights with LEDs, which don't generate enough waste heat to melt the snow off the housings.

    It sometimes snows in Michigan.

Probably fine. A diode is a very simple component, the most dangerous thing for it is probably overcurrent.

The rectifier circuits might be more sensitive, but you can make a half-wave caveman rectifier with... more diodes.

And the poster above was right that film noir had lots of anti-heroes -- but when I was growing up, those rarely turned up on the Late Show. So most of my childhood ideas of heroism were formed by Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, Roy Rogers, and Captain Kirk. Roy, for instance, was not going to be smuggling weapons into Mexico, and illegals back out, so he could fund the Double-R-Bar Ranch. That was the province, strictly, of the bad guys.

319 Roger Simon's article bothered me.

Essentially he admits to his own part in destroying California both culturally and politically, then says bye felicia.

It must be nice to be so wealthy from his years as a liberal writing liberal stories that pushed the culture to the garbage place it is, being a part of the liberal political scene that created the mess that is California. And now he can use that wealth do go live his last years somewhere he didn't ruin, and die before having to clean up his mess.

It's like when I hear Boomers bitching about Millennials. Who raised the Millennials and the GenXers (who themselves have raised some Millennials)?

The Boomer generation broke up our families, didn't take us to church (or live those values) and plunged our country into massive debt.

    Now they're bitching about us.

I'm a Millennial. I get it. My generation sucks. But you raised us. You made us helpless. You destroyed us.

So kindly F*** off. I hope "finding yourself" throughout your selfish life was worth having no one care about you as you lay dying in your rest home where no one comes to visit you.

(for the record, I love my own parents, they are Boomers but they are an exception within their generation)

I know this is going to piss people off. But I really am just so tired of Boomers bitching about Millennials. I'm not normally like this.
