Follow the Money: John Cusack's an Anti-Semite But He Won't Be Losing Any Harvard Commencement Address Gigs

John Cusack retweeted an antisemitic meme, then defended doing so four times, and then claimed that a right-wing "bot" tricked him into retweeting it or something.

If I had my way, John Cusack would be permitted to tweet memes that contain centuries-old antisemitic tropes without much consequence.

But these are the left's rules -- and I can't help noticing they seem to only apply to the right.

I wish we could get away from all the identity politics, but it is only the left that is allowed to use that "weapon" for their causes, while hating Trump voters that are Jewish/gay/woman/black ... whatever ... their factional identity is only sacred when they hate Trump voters.

So, why should anyone care in the least what anyone of these perverts say, do, or even think about anything?

312 Humphrey Bogart was actually a WW I veteran, and had lived a good part of his life before he kind of fell into acting.

Bogart's story is really interesting. He took an injury in the navy in WWI to his upper lip (delivering prisoners on a train), which paralyzed it giving him his distinctive delivery and expressions. His earliest work was always the gormless, nice friend of the male romantic lead, second banana in plays and movies. Nobody took him seriously or thought of him as a tough guy until I think it was Petrified Forest where he played a gangster and he was so good at it that became his primary work.

But roles like Captain Queequeg proved his versatility and talent.

Again, that said... he was a leftist, and a pretty hard core one. Probably Commie if not a sympathiser. And his personal life wasn't exactly above reproach either. The famous love story of Bogie and Bacall was the tail end of 3 previous marriages in which he fell for Bacall while filming To Have and Have not at the age of 46 while she was 19, still married to Mayo Methot.

Capra's propaganda work for the Army was outstanding. In general, Americans are pretty bad at wartime agitprop, but he was a master.

343 Highly recommend Hail Caesar! 1950's Hollywood. This is George Clooney's character to a "T". I am amazed the Cohen's got him to do it. And got Josh Brolin to play the catholic studio head.

Admit it. You work for the Coen's, don't you? Even if you don't know how to spell their name.

Nope. I barely know who they are but I know what I like. They've entertained me consistently. The movies they do that don't get good reviews, should definitely be watched.

344 Isn't Dennehy a stolen valor douche who claimed to have served in Vietnam? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Yeah that was him. Big scandal a few years back.

Charles Durning on the other hand: multiple purple hearts, bronze and silver star. A real hero.

350 I like the Roman approach, where actors were held in lower legal and social status than anyone including prostitutes, and it was considered utterly scandalous for anyone of importance in politics or religion to be seen consorting with them in any way.

Pretty much the Victorian attitude as well.

360 The "hate has no home here" stuff is so... Orwellian.

See now, there are people I disapprove of. There are even probably a few that I dislike. There are individuals I avoid both in meat-space and inside my head because no one has time for their toxicity. But I'm allowed to "hate" people. I generally don't, but I have a choice.

The Orwellian "hate has no home here" REQUIRES those people to hate. It's not even optional anymore. They have a moral obligation in order to maintain their status as a "good" person to hate all the "haters". They are required to be intolerant of the intolerant. People who disagree aren't merely *disapproved* of because of their wrong ideas. They have to be hated or else your moral position isn't firm enough.

Most of the producers and studio owners back then were pretty strongly right leaning, so that didn't bother them. Honesty as long as you kept making them money they didn't seem to care WHAT you did or were.

I'm OK with no enemies that are actually on the right.

Actual fiscal conservatives, social conservatives, all the way up to the misguided ancaps? No problem.

I'm not going to take the left's baggage it's been trying to saddle us with since the end of WW2, though. No NeoNazis. Nazis were members of a Socialist Worker's Party, which no sane person could justify as being of a right-wing origin.
