Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: Happy Father's Day!! [Weasel]![]() Moving along to other things... ![]() What's wrong with this picture? ![]() It's the same thing - only different! I love the as-issued Garand so much, I bought this little sawed-off feller a few years ago when I had the opportunity. It's an M1 "Tanker" model chambered in .308 Winchester by Arlington Ord., sometime in the 1990's. A shortened Garand was a concept weapon during the latter days of WWII, but never made it into production. Although a small number of prototype rifles were assembled and evaluated by the War Department, they were never issued to troops for a variety of reasons. Instead, the "Tanker" model became a marketing ploy by several different importers much later and were assembled from parts likely returned from Korea or in some cases, the Philippines. Often looked down upon by the purist M1 collector, this rifle is a hell of a lot of fun to shoot, it's very accurate, and the fact that it isn't absolutely original doesn't bother me one little bit. Opinions and reports regarding the quality and functionality of the customization seem to be all over the place, with some importers doing a better job with the modification than others. The ones modified by Blue Sky were apparently very unreliable. I've never had a problem with this Arlington Ord., - it works flawlessly. It's such a popular idea that Fulton Armory is still making some very nice (and pricey!) examples today. So what do you think? Do you feel customizing a Garand is an affront to all that is good and decent, or does it look like fun to you too? Well now let's see what else there is to talk about: Taking a road trip this summer anywhere near Springfield, MA? If you are, then a trip to the Springfield Armory National Historic Site and Museum is in order. The collection of weapons there is truly remarkable. If you are even remotely interested in firearms, it's worth a visit! For the armchair traveler, a searchable database of their collection can be found here and here. I've got a pretty good relationship with my father, but the man has zero interest in guns. He's pretty much right down the line on gun control. We used to argue about it, but it got boring after a while.
He's not entirely ignorant of them - he trained on the M-14 when he was in the Army Reserve, but it's just not a thing we talk about. Posted by: A.H. Lloyd at June 16, 2019 07:06 PM (cfSRQ) 10

Of Note: I had an extracting issue with my Kimber.
Stripped the gun, pulled the extractor, degunked and lubed everything. (gun probably has 10K rounds through it before stripping.) Ran my Kimber in IDPA and Steel challenge these last two Saturdays, without cleaning. (IDPA is about 120 rounds) Total of around 350 rounds spread across two Saturdays of shooting and the gun performed flawlessly. Gun is now clean and nesting comfortably in the gun safe. I love my dad. I really do. But he was not the guy who taught me to shoot. Dad is a Marine. He knows how to shoot.
But aside from a brief period of my childhood when he hunted elk and deer, it simply did not interest him. My best friend's dad taught me to shoot. Jim's dad had an arsenal that was mind-boggling, and a lot of those guns were collector pieces. I once shot a single shot breech-loaded 45-70 with an octagonal barrel. Kick-ass. Now onto the fun! I went out the range yesterday and burned through a bunch of ammo with wife, Middle Daughter and two of her friends.
Weapons employed: Walther PK380, SigSauer Mosquito, Walther PPQ, HK P2000, DMPS Oracle (Barebones AR-15), and Beretta CX-4 Storm (Carbine). I also brought my Webley Mk VI and put 12 rounds through it. I'm getting a feel for how the sights line up, and got a tolerable group at 10 yards, though it was low and to the left of center. The girls started on the PK380 until it ran out of ammo. Results were mixed. We then moved to the PPQ, which performed better, and the Mosquito came into play. I got out the HK but only fired a few rounds through it before everyone decided to give the long weapons a turn. As it turned out, I ended up using the AR exclusively and everyone else played with the Beretta Storm, which they enjoyed immensely. We were shooting at 25 yards with a seat and rest and it has a red-dot optic, so that helped them build some nice groups. The AR was a little more finicky because I haven't fully broken it in, but I got decent results. The glass on it is a little low but centered. I think next weekend I'll range it in at 50 yards and see how I do. I don't think it's had more than 100 rounds through it and it's past time for me to put it through the paces. Tragically, on the way home we did an impromptu canoe ride and everything was lost. On the plus side, I didn't have to clean them. Posted by: A.H. Lloyd at June 16, 2019 07:14 PM (cfSRQ) 43
Living in the country, my dad and I and a hunting rifle went to an old gravel pit and did target shooting when I was about 12. I got my first deer when I was 14, with one shot. I shot my Spanish FR-8 and Cetme this past week.
They both shoot the 7.62 x 51 NATO, the FR-8 being a converted Mauser bolt and the Cetme being the semi/full auto Nazi gun makers last hurrah for the Spanish. I zeroed both at 25 yards to see how high at 100 yards they would end up. Per the Ballistics Kackalater, the FR-8, having a sight height of 1.5 inches, was to shoot 2.6 inches high with a 7.62 x 51 mm factory load. It did. Which made me smile. The Cetme, having a scope and a sight height of 3 inches, was supposed to shoot 7.2 inches high at 100 yards with a 25 yard zero. It did too. Another smile. Now to take them next week out from 200 to 600 yards and see if the Ballistics Kackalater is spot on again. The Cetme is a beast though, worst trigger ever and heavy, and I like heavy guns. As far as Garand Tankers, a fella at the range awhile ago was shooting his but it would not cycle. He asked me what I thought, and I said let's disassemble the rifle and have a looksie. He did not know how to break down his weapon and when I showed him, the rifle was full of cosmoline. I told him to go home and clean the rifle, then shoot it again. Just returned from putting 20 rounds down range with my Remington Ultimate muzzle loader. Managed 1.5-2.5" 3-shot groups at 100 yards, and 4" at 200. Not too bad, but not great. The loads (275gr. Parker, 140gr. Blackhorn) "chronographed" (Lab Radar) at just under 2100 FPS. I'd like to consistently shoot 3" or better groups at 200 yards from the bench. That'd make a great MN deer load for the shotgun zone. Anyone else own and hunt with a Remington UML?

Modifying Garands is considered taboo by most people familiar to the rifle. However, Fajen and Bishop used to sell a monte carlo sporter stock for the rifle. A fellow who taught me a lot built one with a birdseye maple stock. He took everthing down to bare metal, polished the hell out of it and had a Weatherby grade deep royal blue done. It was, well, different.

Dad was a champion pistol shooter, 1911, .45 APC. He couldn't afford a competition model so he shot with his service one. He use to take me down to the rock quarry and shoot his pistol. I was too young to shoot it myself. Later in life I took him to the pistol range at Ft. Hood. He could still out shoot me.
He was an imposing figure. He rode in the cavalry, on horse back, for 4 years, 2nd and 7th Cav. I regret to this day that I didn't learn more from him. I was a cock sure self centered ass. He went to war early. The 7th mechanized and formed the 13th ACR, a part of the 1st Armored. He went over on the Queen Mary to Ireland and and fought his way through North Africa and Italy, wounded once. I don't even know how he came back home. Never will. Some others as well, but I won't name them as they aren't mine and it's not my place to do so. Posted by: hogmartin at June 16, 2019 07:20 PM (t+qrx) --- I was soooo sad I couldn't go. I was utterly miserable at drill. We had a change of command and got to stand in formation for an hour in hot, humid hangar. Then and early wakeup for Rifle Qual on Sunday where I got to spend five hours in the rain trying to figure out just how much oil they put in this rifle. I guess I made the standard, but the day was pretty joyless. Tell the 'rons I'll likely be out at Rose Lake next weekend as well. Posted by: A.H. Lloyd at June 16, 2019 07:22 PM (cfSRQ) 74

Dads and guns:
Dad grew up hunting in rural NH but quit before I was born. I have his rifles. He used to tell me he'd teach my to shoot and we go down to the dump and shoot rats, but we never did. I think he was just going on memory and didn't wonder whether you could shoot rats at the dump in the places where I grew up. As he was declining I tried to ask questions about the family lore that would soon be lost. He had made a gun sound when tending Aunt Mary's general store, what was it? He racked a .45. Bad guys left. So I have a desk he built, his Crown Graphic 4x5 camera, and two Winchesters, .22 and .30/30. Posted by: Bandersnatch at June 16, 2019 07:28 PM (fuK7c) 88

That's it for this week - have you been to the range?
Yes to shoot steel. I'm also a member of the local archery club, and our club provides all of the targets, field, 3D and bags. I built and deployed half of the field targets, and help on occasion for 3D tournaments bringing out the "good" targets. In archery, every shot leaves a permanent hole, and our targets are not cheap. Back to the gun range. So I get out to the 100 yard range, hang a couple and notice a AS500 3/8ths" out by itself the only people on that range are way down at the other end shooting .22s at 25 yards. Cool. Three targets. Through my second magazine on the Tavor, when this hot-head comes screaming and yelling, making threats and pretty much setting up a Monkey Dance. Apparently it is not a club target. Apparently it isn't even his target. Lesson learned: Don't shoot any targets unless they are yours, or unless specifically invited to shoot that particular target by its owner. I was told that I "blasted holes" through the target and it was a simple pot-iron target that I now had to pay $200 for - Right Now. Even real large AS500 half inch targets are no where near $200. Did I mention, it wasn't even his target? I have been extensively trained in Aikido, Krav Maga, Active Shooter, VIP protection and for the past couple of years been in to boxing - and here is this dude wanting to Monkey Dance at a gun club (not a public range) So I de-escalated the situation. Dude was still wanting to stir up some shit even though I'm much bigger. Still de-escalate. Wacks the "Range Cold" button that flashes red lights telling everyone the range has been deemed cold - there were still shooters at their station on loaded weapons. Didn't even bother to clear the range before signalling Range Cold So I warn those active shooters to stop Right Now and move away from the bench while the Hot Head jumps into his truck and drives at high speed across the range down to the 100 yard target. Then drives back at same speed, catching air in his truck just fewer than 20 yards from the firing line. I was screamed at that shooting another person's target is a "Safety Violation". But apparently declaring a range Cold when shooters are still firing and then driving like a mad man across the range is not a "Safety Violation". BTW, the target, which was not his, was AS500 3/8ths and only the paint was marred, no "holes blasted through". By the time all of the drama was finished, we shook hands and decided everything was cool. Lesson: Shoot ONLY your own targets. NEVER anyone else's, even if invited, because you never know when someone is going to go full sheep dog. Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at June 16, 2019 07:30 PM (lD3vL) 90

On the other hand, Santa brought us BB guns. Then, after much research in the school liberry, yes, they had these books in school, on .22 rifles and young men, uh, boys, a single shot boltie showed up under the tree when I was 12. I mention this because I have two guns I want, desparately, to try out. The Henry .223 single shot and a Rock Island GI 45 auto. The Rock Island is a copy of the original 1911. I've read some parts will even interchange. For a budget pistol it seems very well made with tight tolerances compared to the early 1911s. The reviews are very positive, stressing reliability and good accuracy. I haven't had a 1911 for decades and really want to put this baby through its paces. Damn this elbow. Didn't Springfield Armory take the shortened M1 and call it a SOCOM 16 or SOCOM II ? I picked up one of those and didn't enjoy its heaviness and inaccuracy. It also was fussy about the ammunition. My dad was born in 1903, when he was about 12 years old he used his dad's muzzle loader shotgun to shoot a rabbit, he told me he put the amount of powder in from a measure and it did not look like enough so me put more in and it knocked him on his butt. Years later I took that old shotgun apart and cleaned it up, it was a percussion sidelock with London Twist barrels and now it leans against my fireplace with a nice stock and re-rust blued barrels. He later shot a lot of rabbits using .22 shots and when I was nine years old he taught me basic gun safety saying never point a gun towards anything you don't want to kill, keep the barrel out of the dirt and don't load until you are ready to shoot and then put your finger in the trigger when you are ready to make the gun go off.
Dad had also told me if you have to hold a gun on some one keep them far away, far enough so you can shoot them if they try to take it away. He encourage me to shoot and by the time I was ten I could use my .22 by myself and at 12 years old I would take off after school with my single shot 12 ga. by myself, different times. I took my son shooting some when he was a kid and we had fun, I also helped as an assistant Boy Scout leader taking him and others gun safety. Now he competes in three gun and pistol competition Colorado where he lives, some in Utah and a few other states and we still hunt together at least once a year along with my son-in-law and my grandsons who have with us since they could walk. My other son-in-law has more guns than the rest of us and that grand son, soon to be eight is good on a bench with and AR. Range time...yeah.
Annual quals are coming up and I'm dealing with some issues. My little M-Forgery was worked on by my best friend and former EMS partner not long after I bought it (titanium firing pin retaining pin and helical-coil gas rings...strictly reliability mods), at the tail end of 2016. I wanted him to be there when I took it to the range for the first time, and so tried to make plans to take time off and travel to his AO for the "inauguration". This was not strictly for sentimental reasons; I have some years experience carrying handguns on duty but have never owned a rifle bigger than .22 in my life. Unbeknownst to me, his health was deteriorating faster than he let on, and he passed away with his handiwork still untested. I know I'm being a sob-sister, but I seem to develop some problems with blurred vision every time I get it out and oil it, and there is literally nobody I trust enough to train me the right way to use and maintain it. It sucks, but at least I can distract myself by working with my duty pistol for the short term. ...thanks for reading Posted by: F. Lee Bailout at June 16, 2019 07:45 PM (0klD4) 131

sounds like someone too stupid and hot headed to be allowed on a range, let alone be in charge of one.
In fairness, there is a back story. Part of de-escalating is getting them to describe exactly why they are chimping out. The range regularly hosts fairly big competitions, and a State Steel shooting competition was held recently. He was one of the few guys out there in the hot Texas sun with metal grinders and paint trying to bring back the metal frames that hold all of the targets and get it ready for the competition. Hard Work. Those things are shot to hell up. The next day, he returns and discovers that someone must have been sighting in their scope using the metal rails to line up their horizontal and vertical, and the perp blasted a huge hole in the metal rails. On a previous occasion, they usually send the kids out to collect the targets after a shoot, and kids being kids, didn't bring back the same number that were taken out. Another person discovered the target and must have used something substantial, and of the armor piercing variety to blast the "head off of the chicken" target. Not just dent it, but blast it clean off. I didn't blast holes in anything, and even when free standing can regularly swing 8" metal without hitting the rails. So I guess he was conflating those garden variety assholes with this asshole. We all survived and no enemies made. Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at June 16, 2019 07:49 PM (lD3vL) 138

Earliest memory of hunting with Old Pappy Eromero was hunting rabbits with my 12ga double barrel Stevens and a dozen beagles. Later got my first deer and hog with that same shotgun. When I went back on active duty, travels took me away from hunting but I did get to hunt with him a bit in his mid-70's. Sad to say I've hunted more since he passed in 2004 than I ever did when he was alive. I miss him a lot, but my hunting partners for past 25 years are an old Navy buddy from PA and of course Mrs. E.

Each town, city or county has the authority to set "carry policies" for employees. I haven't checked, but I suspect the majority of jurisdictions in VA bar employees from carrying in buildings.
Colleges in Virginia ban students, faculty and staff from carrying on campus and ban everyone from carrying in buildings. So I could walk around campus with a sidearm but I couldn't enter a building on campus while armed. My child could not carry anywhere on campus. There is obviously much more yet to be disclosed about the Virginia Beach shooting. Kate Nixon KNEW something was likely to happen on that day and debated carrying with her husband the night before. She chose not to carry and was among those murdered. It will eventually come out but Virginia Beach is in hurry to let the sunshine on their stupidity. Bad laws and policies make for bad outcomes. Posted by: Wtp at June 16, 2019 07:55 PM (WQfDg) --- Anything you get has to be something you practice with regularly, or it's more of a hazard than a help. I say that because guns don't just hit the target by magic, so in a bad situation, you might make it worse by thinking you can shoot your way out when in fact you can't. As a friend of mine (who is a crack shot) once remarked: "Shooting is a perishable skill." You need to practice. Obviously there are varying levels. If you standard is being able to hit a standard piece of paper at 7 yards, that's less exacting than competition shooting. But whatever you get, you need to be familiar with it on a regular basis. Revolvers are nice because they don't have odd levers, releases and such. Easy to clean, easy to use. No safety, no ejecting the magazine by accident. Hence the recommendation. My first handgun was a revolver for that reason. Posted by: A.H. Lloyd at June 16, 2019 07:59 PM (cfSRQ) 157

This week's range report:
Went twice. First trip, shot 2 new S&W revolvers. Both .357 Mag, a Model 60 Pro and a Model 686 Pro. I've never shot revolvers before. I was semi-poor using a two-hand grip, and a little better using a single hand. Shooting right to low-right. I need to buy a cheap .22 revolver to work on mechanics using cheaper ammo than .38 Spcl. Or I need to give up on revolvers. Second trip, took a friend from out-of-town. He said he shoots 9mm Glocks, a compact G(I can't remember) and a G43, at least twice a month. He has only shot Glocks. I let him shoot three of my Sigs, an M17 (9mm), a P226 (.357 Sig), and a 1911 TacOps (.45). He LOVED them. He could not believe how good the trigger pull was on the TacOps (he never shot a 1911 before) and the P226 (in single-action mode). He also said he found the P226 and 1911 more sold (non-flexing) than Glocks. I may have made a convert to Sigs, if his wife lets him buy one. Posted by: Gref at June 16, 2019 08:00 PM (AMIL/) 159

I was once fairly accurate with a .357. Wouldn't that be an option? Posted by: Wtp at June 16, 2019 07:56 PM (WQfDg) --- Sure, but more specifics are needed. What range were you shooting at? How big was your group? How long was the barrel? Were you actually using magnum rounds? Firearms are tools, each specialized for a specific function. Thus, when people say "what should I get?" I always have to ask "what do you want to do with it?" That's why collections grow almost of their own accord. The more you know about shooting, the more you understand how a particular weapon is even better at doing that one thing than the one you have right now. So you try to close the gaps, only to realize that your knowledge has made you aware of gaps you never knew existed. Welcome to the rabbit hole. Posted by: A.H. Every once in a while troubles will crop up on a rifle. My XT-22 Marlin is having one of those periods. Normally this is about a 2 to 2.5 moa rifle at 100 yards. Now for reasons I haven't been able to diagnose it is shooting about 7 moa at that distance. I have three possible explanations.
1. I have shot the barrel out. (I don't believe that. .22s are such low velocity and low pressure rounds it would be really hard to burn up a barrel. Looking down the bore everything looks bright and shiny.) 2. The scope mount has worked loose, and the scope needs remounted. I have had that kind of problem before.3. The scope is broken (Scope is rated for a 50BMG recoil, pretty hard to believe I broke it with a .22 lr's recoil.) As you may be able to tell I am leaning toward problem #2. Wtp, Weasel is correct. A 38 special revolver is the way to go. Many people add a 12 or 20 ga. pump shotgun.
But having the firearms is only part of the story. You need to practice to become familiar with the guns, especially double action shooting with the revolver. You also have to give serious thought to being able to use firearms in a deadly situation. Posted by: JTB at June 16, 2019 08:04 PM (bmdz3) 170

And then you get to where the gaps don't matter, and with adequate training and waiting for the right conditions you can neck down what your EDC should look like. Happy Father's Day, 'Ron's.
It's almost the 12th (!) anniversary of my father's death, and I still miss him. I grew up in Nigeria, so he didn't take us to the gun range. But armed robbers came to our house one night when I was 16, terrorized some of us a bit and then locked us in the bathroom while they ransacked my parents bathroom (thank God for protecting us from physical harm and that somehow, they didn't take their valuable passports - they were to travel overseas soon after that). Within a short time, my dad got a bunch of rifles or shotguns (don't know which just that they had long barrels) and would distribute them every night to the male staff on the property. Note that my dad was about 63 at this time, retired in his dream house after a long distinguished career in the diplomatic service and after that, public service. He had lived quite a cushy life up till then and this kind of thing was entirely foreign to him. (Remember that it's a different culture from the US.) But protecting his family was foremost in his mind and he was ready to do whatever it took. Just like the other dads in the neighborhood who also got firearms to protect their family and neighbors. (At the time, it was a relatively remote area where people had just started building houses, so we were a great target for armed robbers, like much of the rest of the state, but not where we had just moved from which was very safe.) Thank you to good dads everywhere who lovingly protect their families from danger. Good husbands and fathers are so important and should be put on a pedestal just like mothers. I love you, Daddy. since you don't know when "then" will be.
That is a bit more complicated that one would imagine. How long does WOROL take place? So lets say that things go sideways and the zombies have discovered your prepper stash and decide to socialize it among themselves. Once they breech the doorway, game over. Your security broken. You are dead. So you lay down a perimeter and decide that nothing crosses it. Then you start stacking bodies like cord wood. Then after a week WOROL is over and there is some semblance of order. You are now deemed a mass murderer and you are dead. Lets say that ROL never returns and it is Thunderdome as far as the eye can see. How do you know? The problem is, you don't know how long the Zombie Apocalypse will last, short and you go to prison if you plan short and it goes long, you will never know because you are dead. Posted by: AltonJackson at June 16, 2019 08:14 PM (r3IfA) BORE WORMS No really, it's a bit that attaches to the end of the rammer instead of the cleaning jag, that looks like a wood screw. You keep turning it into the ball until you either get it seated firmly and you can draw the ball back out, or you've removed enough lead from the center of the ball that it deforms more easily. LOTS of AR-15s and LOTS of Glocks or Commodity Guns. Why? Because you will need to arm your neighbors and have a common ammo and magazine. Posted by: Henry Rearden Training people , especially young people in firearms is a process. Center-fire handguns are the last stage in the process. Were-ever possible it should go something like this. Prone - single shot .22 rifle until competent/confident then kneeling/sitting then standing supported then offhand. Again until competent/confident . Then a repeating .22 rifle - do it all over again from the start until competent/confident. If happy, progress to a .222/.223 caliber bolt action , repeat all positions. Then move to a AR .223. Lots of repeats for this. Progress to a .308 bolt then a .308 semi. Stop. A year later after training on all rifles and positions regularly as mentioned, then think about other systems and maybe, just maybe pistolas. No full auto, no mag dumps just plain old, controlled, aimed fire. Posted by: NZFrank withanM2 at June 16, 2019 08:22 PM (bgJ0E) 219

See, now this is the crap. You don't know me, you
don't know where I live, but most importantly you don't know the future. There are a bajillion scenarios where having a gun is better than not having a gun, regardless of training, because there will be plenty of time, and there are plenty of places, to practice.. And TBC, I'm not snubbing training. Just saying this absolitism is a distraction from the questions that I have. Posted by: Wtp at June 16, 2019 08:14 PM (WQfDg) --- No, I don't know you, so I can only go off of the information I have. Perhaps this analogy will clarify things. Let us say I usually take the bus around town. I don't have a car or a bike, because the bus is very convenient. But I worry about rising civil disorder, and I'm not really close to things. So I think about getting a bike or a car in case the bus doesn't work. Then I ask people, which I should have on hand, just in case. I don't intend to use it until then, just keep it in reserve. But if I don't know how to drive or ride, what good will it do me? Do you see my point? Firearms break, sometimes in big ways, sometimes in small ones. If you don't know the weapon, it could be a fatal oversight. The best solution (which is what we are trying to find) is something that is easy to use, affordable, and requires minimal practice and knowledge. Hence, a revolver. Posted by: A.H. Lloyd at June 16, 2019 08:23 PM (cfSRQ) 222

Don't overlook dry firing for your training needs.
Yes, it's boring, repetitive and no big boom at the end, but it gives you time with your weapon for familiarization and reloading drills, sight and sight picture as well as trigger feel and weight. Most expert shooters spend more time dry firing than at a live fire range. 10-15 minutes a day for a week in your home and you will learn things you miss at the range. Best gun I've ever held (never fired, by the time I was allowed to hold it, grandpa thought it was too fragile to fire anymore) was a Kentucky Long Rifle, carried by an ancestor of mine named Hardin Safford in the French and Indian War. Beautiful tiger striped wood in the stock - I was already 6' when I was 18, and I recall when I placed the stock on the ground, I would have to lift up my chin to rest it on the barrel. (that was just to measure how long it was, nothing more nefarious) About 100 years ago or more, it got converted to a cap and ball, but Grandpa remembered hunting squirrels with it when he was a kid.
I was kinda mad when Grandpa left it to an uncle by marriage when he passed (all of his kids were daughters who didn't care much for guns) BUT Uncle later donated it to a museum, which is really where it needed to be. So can't be mad about that - it was a privilege just to be able to hold it. Posted by: Tom Servo at June 16, 2019 08:25 PM (V2Yro) 228

Are you regularly pieing the building, shooting at obscured targets while running for cover in low to no light situations. Are you firing while crawling, or on your back, or on your side shooting under tables, beds, with the weak hand, etc.? Does your range allow you to live fire weapon transitions on the move? A further question is whether it is for home use exclusively, or personal defense. I'm a big fan of shotguns, but here also you need to be able to control (and clean!) whatever you get. I fall back on the car/bike analogy. Ownership often comes with ancillary items, like tire gauges, air pumps, etc. So you'll also need a cleaning kit and an idea of how to use it. Posted by: A.H. Our father taught us all to shot but never hunted. He said he'd killed enough in Europe in WWII. He was a hard person - when we boys would go hunting, if the limit was 3, he gave us 3 shells and expected us to bring home 3 birds. Growing up in the rural midwest in the '50s, food on the table sometimes was what we brought home. He died over 40 years ago and he is still missed. Heck of a guy. I hope my son thinks of me the same.

To my knowledge he never shot it here in the US. We have taken it to the range and it works pretty well. Mr. L says it has the nicest trigger pull of any gun he has ever shot. It looks pretty rough, probably because it was made at the end of the war when they must have been cranking the weapons out.

Of the things I mentioned above that would not only get your forcibly removed from the range, but also permanently banned - much of this can be found in private lessons.
Practice can and should happen at home with LED reactive targets that use your own firearm to hold the laser gizmo. The best gun for this is the Taurus PT 24/7 OSS DS that has a "double striker" feature so that you don't have to tap-rack and roll to set up the next one. (just keep pulling the trigger and the striker keeps hitting the lazer gizmo) You can then go Rambo around the house any time you want. You just don't get the deafening noise and the muzzle blast. The Old Man didn't teach me to shoot (he was career Navy and was kind of meh of the subject of firearms after nearly getting killed in combat in Vietnam), but my Uncle Jerry did. When I was about 12, he started me out with a .22 rifle shooting down the hill behind his house with "Mud Lane" as a back-stop. Did I mention that Uncle Jerry was a gen--oo--wine hillbilly?
After I got proficient with the .22, he asked if I wanted to shoot "a real gun" and I, of course, said yes. He unlimbers a .58cal muzzle-loader. When I pull the trigger, the recoil knocked me on by ass. Uncle Jerry laughed like a maniac. Later in the 1980s, the Old Man got an interest in WWII firearms and bought a Garand, an M-1 carbine and a 1911. We went shooting a fair amount at a local range until the arthritis got too bad in his hands. Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop is now an engineer at June 16, 2019 08:36 PM (5Yee7) 250

You are never to old to learn. At 74 years old I am still decent with a shotgun, shot skeet for years and still do to tune up for dove season in Texas. I am all right with a rifle shooting deer and a few other critters but I sucked with a pistol. Three years ago I started shooting Steel Challenge with a .22 pistol at our local .22 only range. We run about 120 rounds with a pistol and another 80 with rifle on the first Saturday of every month.
My goal at my age was not to come out last and I have slowly moved up to the middle and we do have some long time good shooters who leave me in the dust. Last time out a new guy showed up with a fantastic .22 W&W and only one magazine so I helped him reload and he never missed but he was a bit slow. Long story short he lives about a long block from me so we had coffee at my house early last week and he told me that he was a Texas Highway patrolman in the 1970s and on a team that took Nationals during his last years. We went out to the Bander gun range two days ago and he taught me more, I read a lot and have had some help but in one hour I learned so damn much about what I was doing wrong with over 50 years of bad pistol shooting and he was patient and matter of fact without playing drill instructor. Of course the fact that he took his old Trooper Colt .357 shooting .38 specials and while I was all over my target at 7 yards he was drilling holes in the center of the little man in the upper left corner of the target shooting double action. The moral to my story is if you suck try to find a nice person and asked for help. Went twice. First trip, shot 2 new SW revolvers. ==== A gunsmith told me to put a pencil in the barrel and put the pencil against a wall with paper. Then pull and pull until there is a very small movement of the line made by the pencil. Some people pull quick, some pull long. Find what works for YOU. SA with the light trigger pull keeps it on target.Do the drill above with DA. DA made me pull all the shots down and to the right. A hypothetical for the more experienced:
I would normally carry a rifle (in a soft case) in my vehicle, if I had one, but it needs to be moved often due to folks getting into the back seat sometimes. If that would happen, I would need to move the rifle from the second seat into the third seat area - I have an SUV. It's a hassle and further, folks see me move the soft case around and I would prefer they don't. Any thoughts on what might be a better arrangement? The rife and case live in the vehicle. My wife bought me this 'Mantis' training thing. It's an phone app that synchs via bluetooth to a device you put on a Pick rail. It tracks how you're gripping the gun, your followthrough and, somehow, how on target you are.
It wasn't easy to get set up and configured but it's been interesting. It's not telling me much I don't already know: that I tend to 'heel' the gun to push it down. But it could be a useful tool in fixing that. Interesting stuff. Fired 200 115gr FMJ through the XD 9. Didn't get great groups, for me. And I put 100 rounds through my bull barrel MK IV Ruger. Which was fine but uninspiring. I think I am, in part, a victim of 'too many guns' syndrome. I shoot so many pistols that I have to 'relearn' the idiosyncrasies of one particular gun. On the whole, the Walther PPQ is the most forgiving and the Glock family I seem to shoot consistently well. Which is odd, since those two platforms are on different ends of the ergonomic spectrum. Walthers feel great, Glocks feel blocky but I shoot them equally well. Sigh. Time to strap on the G21 until I re-learn my XD again. Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at June 16, 2019 08:44 PM (lD3vL) Just a heads-up on that! Many cordless drills have brush-type DC motors, and brushes can throw big fat sparks. I have a couple that do that, and you can see the sparks, and smell the ozone, even in a well-lighted room. Such a drill, with gasoline trickling down over, could become a fireball in your hand. There are cordless drills on the market now, with brushless, electronically-commutated motors, which would be safer for that sort of use. A hammer, and a long, tapered punch with a sharp point would work well, too, but not so well on a plastic tank. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 16, 2019 08:52 PM (WG6O9) 300

261 A hypothetical for the more experienced:
I would normally carry a rifle (in a soft case) in my vehicle, if I had one, but it needs to be moved often due to folks getting into the back seat sometimes. If that would happen, I would need to move the rifle from the second seat into the third seat area - I have an SUV. It's a hassle and further, folks see me move the soft case around and I would prefer they don't. Any thoughts on what might be a better arrangement? The rife and case live in the vehicle. I have a cool Father's day gun story!
My Dad passed away a little over a year ago. A few months ago, cleaning out his storage space I found his old military school rifle. It is a Remington Targetmaster 510 .22 bolt action single shot and one of the originals. I don't want to claim it was from the first production lots in 1939, but the timing of my Dad's time in school puts it in the very early 40s at a minimum. I remember seeing the rifle in the attic as a kid, and we did go shooting with it once when I was maybe 8 or 9. The rifle has not been shot in 50 years. I took it into the gunsmith at the range yesterday and he took it apart, did some cleaning, and checked the bore. Everything was in good condition. He gave it a clean bill of health. Took it onto the range, put a round in it and sighted the target at 15 meters. The round hit the bulls eye dead center, the aim is perfect on the rifle. Three shots, three bulls eyes. Here's to you Dad. Posted by: Dave in Fla at June 16, 2019 08:59 PM (PHotS) 316
Went to the range last Tuesday. Fired about 300 22lr down range. Various ranges. All but a few shots were kill shots.
Heart and head. Weapons used, Henry 001 and a Heritage Arms Rough Rider. Nothing fancy. Just goes to my thought that there is no such thing as a deadly weapon. Just deadly people. Posted by: Ole, Evill twin of Sven at June 16, 2019 09:00 PM (vqIkG) 317

Docile deer story - here in East Texas, game wardens are big on catching people who were hunting deer from their cars. (a no no under hunting regs) So they came up with this stuffed deer that they would set up in a field, and then the game wardens would hide in a blind with full view and see who took a shot at it, who they would then bust.
They showed some of the video - damn, this was some of the funniest "Bad Boys" video I've seen. One truck comes along, you can see at least 3 shots come out the truck window. But of course, the deer is stuffed, it doesn't fall down. So the truck stops and one of the guys gets out and shoots at the deer, and then annoyed that the deer won't fall over, walks up till he's about 5 yards away and shoots it again. All this with a team of game wardens watching him and filming him. I think they had a hard time arresting him since they were laughing so much! So they came up with this stuffed deer that they would set up in a field, and then the game wardens would hide in a blind with full view and see who took a shot at it, who they would then bust.
How is this NOT entrapment? And a stuffed deer? Sort of like getting busted for child pr0n when the incriminating pr0n is actually a drawing or CGI. Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at June 16, 2019 09:09 PM (lD3vL) 334

Dude. There's a show called North Woods Law where they show a bunch of New Hampshire and Maine Good American game wardens doing game warden stuff. One of the biggest eye openers was a segment where they were following a team on Amistad reservoir near Del Rio, southern shore of that lake is in Mexico. A game warden team on that lake ALWAYS has to have one member standing guard with an M-16, since they never know when some of the Cartel dudes will pop their heads up and start taking potshots at them for fun. And when that does happen, all they can do is lay down suppressing fire and get the hell out of there as fast as they can. The border is one fucked up place. Last two weeks were big ones at the range. Took my 10 year old daughter out last weekend for her to shoot her Savage Rascal. I brought my new to me police turn in Glock 17, Belgian police turn in Browning Hi Power MK3, first purchased handgun, a Taurus 92c (Compact) short run in the early 90s, my sons new Ruger 10/22 and my AR15 A1 build.
I was troubleshooting the Ruger and Taurus. I had some feeding issues with the Ruger the first time out and wanted to see if it was a break in issue. Basically every 3rd or so round would catch on the lower rim of the chamber and jam, scraping off part of the bullet. Problem was still there. The Taurus ran well but ejection was weak and back at my head. Changing out the recoil and ejector spring and maybe the ejector to see if that solves it. The AR ran very rough. Turns out the gas Key was loose. Got what I need to take care of that. Took my son to an indoor range with his grandfather yesterday. Tried the Ruger again with new mags, same issue. Ruger gets a call tomorrow. Apparently they were having some issues in 2016 with their receivers. Brought the new to me 1944 S&W Victory (Navy aviator sidearm) model. It shot very well, though the small grip takes some getting used to. Shot the hi power again to make sure the sights are on. I'll be replacing the spur hammer with a commander type (hoping the sear mates up well) and refinishing and want to make sure I don't need to drift the sight before the refinish. So a lot of shooting with a lot of family but a fair amount of work and aggravation as well. Posted by: Keith at June 16, 2019 09:39 PM (jdGlx) 383

366 What's everyone's favorite .22 rimfire brand? I have an Imperial shit-ton of Winchester Wildcat that I bought cheap 15 or 20 years ago when a local store went out of business. I'm finally getting toward the end of that and need to start buying again.
The Winchester isn't particularly accurate and I'm looking for something better. Last week I bought some CCI Green Tag and found that group sizes are roughly half what I get with the Winchester. Any recommendations (or brands that are crap and to be avoided)? Posted by: Iowa Bob at June 16, 2019 09:30 PM (bjCNA) I buy CCI Minimags in bulk. 5k rounds costs about as much as 1k 45 acp. So they aren't cheap but they run the most reliably. I haven't had trouble with the Thunderbolt tub o' bullets but might be luck. Rimfire primer compound is rarely applied perfectly. Hornady and CCI seem to be the best for quality control. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, buy ammo at June 16, 2019 09:48 PM (xJa6I) 406

I hope 3 stars isn't an 'ouch'. There's a lot of review inflation out there. And I guess I would have like to have seen more mistakes and loss of faculties in the book to buy in on that ending. I was just mystified by the relative absence of the character who'd been driving the plot for so long. On reflection, I think I DO like the Adam Flyte character arc. My dad made fun of me for years for owning modern arms, despite having owned the occasional hunting arm over the years.
After the last few years... he doesn't pick on me about it anymore. Aside from the usual stuff about teaching them to be decent, productive human beings... one of the most important things you can do for your kids is secure for them access to arms, teach them how to use them, and teach them *why* you're doing it, and how and when to both keep their mouth shut. And - while this may be an unpopular opinion - you need to teach them about when it may be appropriate to simply GTFO to somewhere else. Not much point in having your family tree end because they all got killed by some tinpot dictator or Che wannabe. Posted by: lurker (the other one) at June 16, 2019 09:50 PM (67XdO) 410

Howdy folks, my name is Jesse and I usually lurk. I am a second generation NRA life member. I only remember shooting with dad a time or two, at the Izaac Walton League range in Maryland. Dad got his life membership in 1960, when I was 2. All of my life there was a stack of American Rifleman next to his favorite chair...I read them all. Dad shot in the Md State olympics, at least once getting a bronze.
As the years went on, I got married, and had a kid of my own. We had a place to shoot then, and Mom and Dad would come spend a weekend on occasion, and we did shoot together a time or two. I started my son shooting at about 6, with the Remington 580 single shot my dad had given me in 68. I still have it and plan to pass it to my kid soon. To make a long story short, dad passed away 6 years ago. My brother and i split up his collection. We try to get together once a year or so, near his birthday, and shoot some of his guns, in honor of the memories. Posted by: Jesse in DC at June 16, 2019 10:05 PM (ouR/N) 430

My dad passed away 20 years ago. I shot some of my first rounds with him although it was my mom who taught me the essentials.
Being the last late kid, I didn't get to go on many of the hunting or fishing trips but the ones I did were great. He wanted me to go to Annapolis but I went Army ROTC. He wanted me to find a rich sorority girl, I married my high school sweetheart. He wanted me to stay close but my Army career took me all over the world. When I got back from Desert Storm was the only time I saw him with tears. My last conversation with him he told me I was doing a great job as a dad. His granddaughters were special to him. I miss him still today. Posted by: Diogenes at June 16, 2019 10:06 PM (axyOa) 432

Posted by: next in line at June 16, 2019 10:01 PM (moBhW) I'm farsighted after cataract surgery and need reading glasses for closeup work. For handgun, I have good luck wearing a pair of low-power, cheap reading glasses. The front sight is in focus, the rear sight is still pretty sharp and the target is somewhat blurred, but good enough to line up the sights. This works better for me than just straight safety glasses, where the target is in focus, but I can't really see the sights clearly. I did not get to the range this week. I am kind of fed up with stupid RSOs. Last trip, I was finishing up my time on the line, literally holstering my pistol, cocked and locked, into the 4 o'clock position when an RSO reached in between me, underneath my holster, and the side wall of the booth to check/reload the stapler on my bench.
The RSO literally placed a large portion of his body directly in/under the muzzle of my pistol as I was holstering. No notice, no warning, no notification at all! He couldn't have observed what I was doing and that I was preparing to vacate the lane and waited that crucial 5 to 10 seconds! What could possibly go wrong??? I spoke with another RSO and their response was I shouldn't be holstering at that position even though I have sought permission to do so and demonstrated proficiency to other RSOs. It was somehow my fault that an RSO did something so utterly stupid. I really think I need a new range but when I review range rules they are all incredibly vague about drawing and holstering. Therefore, at any given time, at the same range, something is approved or banned, depending on a whim of an RSO. I'm surprised someone doesn't get shot every month. But it isn't due to lack of effort. Posted by: WarEagle82 at June 16, 2019 11:46 PM (+Kpte) 450
