Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition![]() Jeb Bush surges to lead GOP pack in new 2016 poll I'll tell you what's important: GOTV efforts and cleaning up the voter rolls. I think President Trump knows how to campaign, but the Democrats will redouble their efforts to flood the rolls with illegals and whip their faithful into a frenzy of Trump-hate. So the Republican party needs to get off its collective lazy ass and do what needs to be done. No, I'm not confident at all that they will do their job. It is up to the voters...the Trump supporters who fought and beat the inside-the-beltway corporatists in 2016 to do it again, and maybe get rid of a bunch of the wishy-washy crypto-Never-Trumpers while they are at it. And I still cannot understand how Scott Walker managed to run such an incredibly incompetent campaign, right from the start. WTF happened with Carly Fiorina anyway???? ===== I think she was too corporatist -- Me for Cruz and Paul, youngest for Carson and Paul, we ended up with Cruz in primary. Anecdotally, there were big lines at the county to absentee vote on spring break. For two years most of these people who are polled (if they're even real, tell the truth, sampled properly, etc) have been receiving a steady diet of MSM bullsh!t. This time around, DJT has consolidated almost all of the GOP election apparatus underneath him and all these PAC's and committees are going to be working FOR HIM this time around. The airwaves are going to be totally covered up with the exposure of yuuuuuuge Dem corruption and radical positions of that party, juxtaposed with the unbelievable success of DJT. I don't want to be overly confident, but I think it will be a bloodbath before the general election even starts.

I worry that three states important to PT winning: NC, WI, and MI now have D governors, but had R governors in 2016. Are there others that flipped? (Other than ME.) Any D to R that could help? Having lived with Perry as Governor for a lot of years, I wasn't surprised that he faded fast, and it WASN'T for political reasons. You know how we always comment on the incredible drive and energy that Trump has? You could tell that Perry just didn't have it anymore. He kind of liked the idea of campaigning, he liked the attention, but he didn't want to have to actually work at anything. That's why the Energy Dep't job is good for him - a job with some prestige and some nice perks where he doesn't have to ever actually do anything except chat up some employees from time to time. The only thing I'm truly scared about is the Democrats vote "harvesting" operations.
They took it for a spin in 2018, by 2020 they will have perfected it and wiped out the GOP in Orange County. Trump and the GOP don't figure out how to put the kibosh on that and it's going to be nearly impossible to win. Posted by: Radical Centrist at June 18, 2019 11:24 AM (HY0gv) 119

Yeah in the opening days of the campaign this list looked extremely good: lots of more conservative types, young, interesting people. Carly even looked intriguing, despite her failure at HP (not entirely her fault, given the time period involved and the shift in tech). I mean Jindal was a boring wonk but a great thinker and very conservative. Walker, Perry, and Cruz were big time conservative voices. Carson, Rubio, and Paul had their flaws but were light years ahead of many previous presidential electoral choices (hello, McCain, Bush, and Dole). It looked like a really good pack of candidates, so much better than what the Dems are floating right now. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at June 18, 2019 11:25 AM (39g3+) 120

We as the conservative base need to make it plain to President Trump that we will support him in cleaning up the voter rolls by any means necessary. If that means sending in Marshals along with Conservative volunteers in defiance of Court orders to do so, well so be it. Trump also needs to announce well ahead of time that there will be Conservative (not GOPe) poll watchers in urban blue polling stations on the look out for fraud. It should also be made clear that any attempt to interfere with them will be met with deadly force.

I started out defending Trump from smears, not because I wanted him or liked him or thought he'd be a good President, just because the slurs were so stupid and false. Honestly, I got upset being 'forced' to defend him all the time. But once I saw him win, saw him fight and him willing to fight...I jumped on the train. Made life at home and work hard. I don't doubt that they "they pimp [polls] to manipulate public opinion."
It might even be the prime motivator. But I do believe for a fair number of these useless eaters, whether they're doing the polls or reporting on them, it's simply to make work for themselves. Do a pointless poll (and they know it's pointless), report breathlessly about it for a few days until Allahpundit is done spanking it to the crosstabs, then rinse and repeat. I call it "the ouroboros of bullshit." Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at June 18, 2019 11:36 AM (AzW6q) 175

Posted by: Vic at June 18, 2019 11:29 AM (mpXpK) I was likewise worried but really liked that he was an outsider whom the GOPe hated, so he had that going for him. Biden is polling well because name recognition and he seems less insane than the rest, not because he has the slimmest shot at winning. The others at the top of present polling like Buttgag, Warren, Harris, et al... probably aren't gonna be around in May of next year. Sanders has proven he can win and honestly did win the primary in 2016, so he may be.

========= Yeah. Actually I thought Cruz was kinda shooting himself in the foot after he got beat, so at this point I don't like him as much as I did. I liked him, but realized that he'd never get elected to a national office. He's already got too high negatives. He's labeled. So, essentially nobody else was different except Trump. Longshot, but he won and it seems like he's doing really well considering. Trump cut Cruz off at the knees. Ruthless. Frankly that's what we need. Its time for ruthless bastards. Posted by: the 3 second second at June 18, 2019 11:33 AM (zJ9zl) IIRC, someone in the Cruz campaign said something not so nice about Melania's past as a scantily clad model and The Donald went Trumpzilla on Cruz after that. Is Perry still Sec. of Energy? You never hear about him.
This actually makes me very happy. Guys like Ben Carson et al are gutting their agencies, cutting back on personnel, closing offices, reducing regulations, etc. They're doing the job that Sessions wouldn't do. And because Trump is such a magnet for hate and attention on the left, its almost all going unnoticed -- or flying under the radar of most people, despite cries of misery from a few on the left. The entire organization needs to be dismantled and rebuilt from scratch. It's not salvageable. They truly do seem to have utterly lost their way. Even the ones not actively hostile to the US as partisan apparatchiks seem to not really know what they are doing or why other than trying to "win." Its not that this could not be turned around by a lot of firings and good, clear leadership, but the chances of that seem awfully dim. One of the most amazing things to me about the 2016 race is that even by 2014, long before the candidates started to shape up, everyone I knew, both conservative and liberal, was saying "no more clinton's, no more bush's." And repeating it over and over.
So here comes the Consultant Class - "Hey kids guess what? We're gonna give you Clinton Bush all over again, that's the only choice you get!" and everyone kept saying, under their breath, "no more Clintons, no more Bush's." In the GOP, Trump emerged and put that to his advantage. Bernie and his Bros tried to do the same, but the DNC was just an arm of Clinton, Inc., so he never had a chance. And so election day came, and to every Consultant's complete "surprise", the answer was - No More Clinton's. No More Bush's!!!! in the most fundamental sense, the election really was never about anything more than that. Trump has two great advantages:
1) The economy. Unless something happens, a booming economy massively helps the incumbent. 2) The Democratic base. The average progressive cannot conceive why anyone would vote for Trump, other than racism, Nazism and stupidity. They live in an echo chamber, so they get nothing but reinforcement for their views. When Hillary talked about "deplorables" who are "irredeemable", she was merely verbalizing what progressive Democrats actually think. A "woke" Democrat finds it physically painful to contemplate actually trying to appeal to Trump voters. Their preferred strategy is to "mobilize their base" (through voter fraud if necessary), so they can ignore icky Trump voters. In Wisconsin terms, if you can get enough votes out of Milwaukee, you can ignore Rheinlander. Posted by: The ARC of History! at June 18, 2019 11:51 AM (I2/tG) 277

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at June 18, 2019 11:42 AM (39g3+) Trump has a very old fashioned personality trait that few modern people appear to understand, which is really quite surprising because it's not complicated. Trump believes strongly in rewarding the people who support him, and punishing those who hate him and work against him. There's nothing in Trump's history to suggest that he would care much for Evangelical views with regard to political issues - BUT Evangelical voters have supported him strongly and consistently, and he has rewarded their loyalty in full, because at his core, he is a very transactional guy. Likewise, the people on the other side of these issues have treated Trump with hatred and intense opposition, and Trump is "Rewarding" them for their actions as well. We on the right are extremely lucky that the Left is so blindly fanatical in their hatred. Trump's voters should have come out in 2018 to reinforce their votes from the previous cycle. Yeah, we always want more, but more should have been given. I get the history of mid terms after one party wins the presidency. But still, nobody is going to tell me the new Trump voters came out in force. And the consequences of that vote still matter today. We have to do better this time, period. I say Trump should be on perma campaign. If the left takes over, it will not be good.

We need to have a party that solves problems, not ignore them or just talk about them. That's been the status quo for decades and is what has us in our current messes domestically. That's a winning ticket. Now, who will start listening to us deplorables and acting on what needs to be done to fix the problems that creeping progressivism/socialism have caused?

Tom, good insight. I think it's a trait that Trump has mentioned a time or two in his books, that of encouraging and rewarding loyalty. He will make a point of reciprocating that loyalty whenever and wherever possible, which is a character trait that is very refreshing given what the political class (especially the GOPe) has given us over the years.
As an aside, it seems clear to me that the NeverTrumpers never bothered to read his books and do some sober reflection on why he's doing so well. If they had they may have come up with realistic alternatives. As it is, they relied on the exact opposite of what Trump does...instead of persuading, they bully. It was the sole option that had the virtue of not having been tried. Nothing else was working, so why the hell not?
And although there were a lot of other factors (such as Hillary being such a horrible, ghastly choice), I think that was the #1 most compelling reason people voted for Trump. It was "well what the hell, we tried everything else" And since its worked out for most people and the majority really do like how things are going... its going to be a really tough fight for any Democrat to beat that, even with the voter fraud. Years ago I read The Selling Of The President, a look at how the 1968 election candidates were framed and how to package them almost like a product. And by Almost I mean Exactly like. I'm thinking that what we see now in the political class is largely informed by that viewpoint. No in depth answers, just 10 second soundbites featuring focus-tested phrases and words. Physical image of a certain "type," so young and vibrant as opposed to mature and wise. And so on. Having Trump turned a LOT of that on its ear. He's not a classic candidate, and I don't mind saying in those early days I didn't much care for him. But I was wrong. He is what we needed and came along when we needed him. Honestly, I don't think the younger liberals even look at the polls. They have an extremely biased view of Republicans that isn't based in reality. They are very myopic in terms of their issue focus, and yes, many of them vote on issues like climate change which is almost completely disconnected from what our government does.
Because of their myope, and their inability to understand the importance of issues related to liberty and a general history of our republic, never mind world issues, they wield their voting power very recklessly and inconsistent with most intellectually derived wisdom. They don't track to any particular poll, because of the decisions they make are based on pathos, and not much more. You can't really predict how they will land on any issue because of their fatuity, and complete unfamiliarity with cause and effect. It's really about time that people figured out they are not going to react to the usual warnings Republicans are endeared to like liberty, constitution, law, order and love of country. It's going to be the real wild card in our next election and the difference between liberty and the Democrats complete tyranny, which is real, whether they believe it or not. 348 It's mildly amusing, because there was only one President Clinton and two President Bushes. Hardly the stuff of dynasties.

Posted by: Lurking Lurker at June 18, 2019 12:06 PM (FiUMj) Perhaps posters who are younger don't realize what it was like to live through it. 1980 -1988: Bush as VP, more influence than normal because of CIA ties, and head of GOP-e, which never really liked Reagan although they had to pretend they did. 1988-1992: Bush takes over, "no new taxes!!!" Oops. 1992 - 2000: the Clinton Circus, thanks to Ross Perot both times. 2000 - 2008: Bush again. 2008 - 2016: Almost Clinton for Prez, instead we ended up with Hillary taking over the State Dep't and installing all of her own people in it. So we'd actually had 36 STRAIGHT YEARS of ALWAYS having a Bush or a Clinton somewhere at the top of the D. C. Power Structure. I have a 20 year old niece who promptly failed out of college because she didn't go to class. She had decent enough grades in public high school but is now striving to be a tattoo artist. When I'm not cringing, we talk a bit. She said she sorta liked Bernie because of his stand on "women's rights." I asked her what rights exactly do women lack in her view. Got the old equal pay thing. I said, well, you and (insert my son's name here) were at the same college. He went to class and got his degree in engineering and integrated science and technology and passed several certification classes while also working part time at a local engineering firm. You didn't go to class and are now seeking to tattoo. He's going to make more money than you. Is that a "rights" question or a skills and "time spent working" question? She said, no, of course he should make more. I said that in Bernie world he would not, you would both get the same income. Of course, then the person who went to class and work would have no reason to do so because it wouldn't advance them, so what happens to society in general if there is no impetus to actually improve one's earning potential? That would probably glut the tattoo artist market.

That's the first thing I would have threatened; making Chinese persona non grata, full expulsion, and seize all their Canadian assets. Justin would never threaten that let alone done it though -- they're probably his biggest contributors. I don't know how much important agri is like wheat we sell them or oil; and if that would be (easily?) replaceable by the Chinese from other sources but I would think it would hurt them in the short run at least. I'd think we'd be able to sell grain elsewhere although, as I admit, I don't know abut those sorts of trade issues. The vote harvesting in California needs to be challenged along with a lot of other rules in Dempocrat states and push to have their EC votes disallowed/invalidated (and other votes for that matter) because they are not securing the voting process. I'm sure Trump has something in mind to protect against fraud, and if he doesn't he needs to, as a top election priority.

I don't believe the nation is creating as many new normals as lefties. I hope I am wrong and too negative on the subject. I still think we will win if we GOTV like it was the most important thing ever. Posted by: Quint at June 18, 2019 12:27 PM (n13/j) 447

Heh. IMO, there is a story there - hitting two smaller, faster tankers NOT carrying oil leads one to think that said attacks were perhaps just a wee bit better planned than at first glance... Posted by: Anon a mouse at June 18, 2019 12:29 PM (6qErC) 450

57 Jeb was so low energy and boring. That's all I remember about his campaign. And Kasich was into hugging and pizza.

I knew from the beginning that it was going to be Cruz or Trump in the primaries. After listening to a Trump rally, I started realizing that he was fearless and had a deep affection for this country.
After that, Cruz sounded like just another run-of-the-mill politician. Posted by: Sooner at June 18, 2019 12:20 PM (Fs5vw) Both were anti establishment but Cruz was still a member of the ruling class. I think the GOP base has always wanted a good candidate from the private sector but Cain and Fiorina were lacking a certain X factor to get either of them over the top.
