Mike Pompeo: Iran is "Responsible" for the Attacks on Two Oil Tankers in the Gulf of Oman

Acts of war.

- Two tankers were attacked Thursday near the strategic Strait of Hormuz -- the second time in a month that tankers have been seriously damaged in the region and again the U.S. has pointed the finger of blame at Iran.

Speaking Thursday afternoon in Washington, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said it was, "the assessment of the United States government that the Islamic Republic of Iran is responsible for the attacks that occurred in the gulf of Oman today. This assessment is based on intelligence, the weapons used, the level of expertise needed to execute the operation, recent similar Iranian attacks on shipping and the fact that no proxy group operating in the area has the resources and proficiency to act with such a high degree of sophistication."

This is going to be an interesting call from Trump. On one hand, he talks up a ferocious game of obliterating enemies in war.

On the other hand, he seems to actually be mostly a dove. He does not want to get into foreign wars and he doesn't want to upset the beautiful, terrific economic conditions we have going on here.

But he now has to pick one of these impulses or the other.

I suppose he could chart some middle path of tactical strikes against a few key Iranian military installations -- but Iran doesn't have to play the moderate course back. Iran could escalate this into full war.

So I don't know if there really is any "middle path" here; the middle path will likely lead to the war path.

So what is Trump? Is he the dove or the hawk? People say he's a Jacksonian, and avoids war until it cannot be avoided, then he seeks to inflict crushing damage.

But is he? Or is he more of a Clintonian "proportional response" type? Or even an Obama "red line" type?

We don't really know yet.

Iran seems to be guessing he's an Obama-like "red line" type -- all bark, no bite.

But I guess we'll see.

Videos of Pompeo's statement and the tankers ablaze below.

We have a few data points to rely on.

Anyone remember when the column of Russian mercenaries began to move on a small force of US troops in Syria?

We wiped them out. We didn't just turn them back, we obliterated them. It caused morale problems within the whole Russian Mercenary community.

Remember when we dropped the largest conventional munition ever devised on some two-bit Taliban bunker? Why'd we do that?

So North Korea (and China and Iran) could watch.

How about that time we smashed half of Assad's remaining air force?

I would expect Trump is issue more threats, Iran to probe, and then something very, very nasty to happen to Iran.

Something like: "If you don't stop by Wednesday next, I'll turn your airfields into freshly-plowed fields."

The strike will happen on Monday.

Because that's how he rolls.

And with ayatollah Iran ordering children to act as human minesweepers in their war against Iraq, there would be plenty of possible corpses.

It could go on the Israeli model, with 'proportional' counters to attacks on US property, but thus far Iran has only hit foreign flagged vessels.

Militarily wise, KSA and Iran are reasonably evenly matched. KSA will own the skies (excluding Scuds), but Iran has the boots.

130 76 Based on Trump's changes to the rules of engagement, when he orders enemies to die, there will be plenty of work for the undertakers.

"for some reason". Yeah.

The possible motivation for the Islamic Republic to do that, is that they mean what they say when they chant "Death To America". They're trying to pull the US into a war in Iran and/or against Russia and China, and to hell with the Iranian people in that area.

But then, Israel also has a motive for the US to destroy or at least cripple the Islamic Republic. So do several Sunni Arab states.

I'd take a pause before getting into a conflict that seems in everyone's benefit except for, you know, America's.

Not really. Based on the article and comments, Buhr expected to be personally invited to apply for scholarships that were available for months. She and her parents tried calling the counselor instead of just having her set up an appointment between classes.

I don't know if her speech was auditioned like so many schools with 7-8 valedictorians do (eliminating all but two or three), but the self-centered twat decided to bait and switch because she's more important than any of her classmates.

235 Vox Day got burned hard by the SJWs in this country - many of them Jewish - and that why (1) he no longer lives here and (2) really REALLY hates the American government, and Jews.

Vox Day sure as hell didn't "question" the Moon landing when he was writing games about a Moon colony back in the late 1990s. But he "questions" it now - not because the evidence for it has gotten any worse; but because he (now) hates the US government that. Much.

He also wasn't notably antisemitic until he got into it with Ben Shapiro on the Right and with all manner of assholes in the science-fiction community.

This is, as Mark once put it, the sort of demon that can only be exorcised with prayer.

-----------------

Or Reagan. He was the one who launched a limited strike on the Iranian Navy in 1987 after a similar situation.

People forget Reagan was not exactly gun-ho for foreign adventures unless it directly involved hurting the Soviet Union more then the U.S. Hence his limited reaction dealing with provocations in Lebanon, Libya, Iran, etc.

That is called keeping your eye on what matters most, and not being distracted. Hence why we are facing a more militant and powerful China. We spent the last 20 years running around Iraq and Afghanistan while China got rich and militarily more powerful.

Plus we have a second, perhaps bigger problem - the progressive left. Cannot fight a big war when a significant portion of the population is doing what it can to achieve defeat for political purposes.

I think having the Demonicrats and the Fake News and Disinformation Bureau pushing to rebuild Iran AND allow all Iranian victims of American aggression to be allowed into this country with mandatory citizenship is a pretty good excuse.
What people that push for war for Americans overlook is that Americans have been programmed to be the "good guys" and help the countries we defeat rebuild. What Americans should be programmed to believe is that we should go in, kick ass, salt the earth of our enemies, then leave them to their own devices. I guarantee you, countries would go out of their way not to fuck with us.

374 I want to see incontrovertible proof that the Iranians did it. It makes zero sense to me they they would attack ships headed to Japan while the Japanese premier minister is there. Not to mention they're trying to squeeze out of sanctions, so an act against a peaceful country like Japan would not exactly endear them to the rest of the world.

The neocons dragged the US into war in Iraq and they've been trying to get its back us back into the region ever since, so excuse me if I choose to exercise extreme skepticism on this.

EMP attacks are a theory. The Russians invested heavily in weapons specifically designed for EMP attacks during the arms race of the 1960s and then quit. They did extensive testing for nearly a decade and stopped the program without deploying any weapons.

That tells me that the effects of EMP weapons are not what we are lead to believe they are.

427 Time for my daily unpopular comment.

For all the people declaring "not my [relative X] in the military." Shut up. Seriously. It's not your call. You do not get to decide whether, when, where, or how your precious baby of a soldier/marine/sailor/airman serves the country.

I hated this attitude when I was an active duty soldier, and I find it even more obnoxious now that I'm older because I recognize it not as touching concern, but as a power trip. YOU get to decide what a soldier's life is worth. YOU get to declare what righteous cause you'll order your loved one to war, and get to damn others who disagree because you claim moral authority. It's SJWism for the Right. Say hello to Cindy Sheehan.

It's a ridiculous, toxic attitude that cheapens their service for the sake of your ego and posturing. And don't lie that it isn't about ego and posturing. That's why you're repeatedly making these declarations on a social forum with your friends for weeks, instead of writing your Congressman or lobbying leadership. Hell, you don't even make an attempt to genuinely understand the situation; "It's not our problem!" you scream, ignoring that Japan and the Marshall Islands are both American military allies. "Choking off 2/3 of the world's oil supply is just fine. The fact that this is being done to force my country into allowing Iranian nuclear armament is A-OK. Just don't send my precious baby into harm's way."

They're soldiers, not babies. And soldiers sign up for the country, not for a particular cause or conflict. We are a form of currency spent on national objectives. And if national leadership decides it's time to invade Canada (again), then we will invade Canada and do so proudly and professionally.

Jeeze. It's bad enough when helicopter parents and their ilk do this crap with coaches. Who does it for grown adults in the friggin' military?

I'm not sticking around for the hate comments. But be aware that your ill-informed, selfish, childish attitude is recognized and unappreciated by the service members on whose behalf you pretend to speak.

Also kindly sink all Iranian minesweepers in port.

Gonna be hard to sell Iranian oil to France and China with the ports shut down.

440 Worf was a racial stereotype, not a character.

He had a character on Deep Space Nine. And, there were like four episodes on TNG where the writers developed something of an arc for him. Those were the episodes where Worf gets discommodated / discommended because of Imperial politics.

But then Paramount ruined it by releasing an actual video collection titled "return to grace". HEY LOOK WE DID TOO GIVE WORF AN ARC.

456 Oil prices have collapsed on the world market and the New World Order just can't have anything that might positively affect America's economy happen. Either have muslims attack oil tankers or another round of oil tankers running aground or oil wells mysteriously as Obama needed to exploit. Low world oil prices greatly increases the likelihood of oil tankers being damaging or oil platforms exploding, doncha KNOW BY NOW !

459 Iran attacked two tankers neither of them carrying oil. I understand the were loaded with hydrocarbon distillation products.

They just proved they have technology and the will to sink an oil tanker should the chose.

It will be Gulf Cooperative Council which responds with military force. We will assist but will not be the vangaurd.

We no longer have a reason to protect these sources of oil.

We do have many reasons to assist the non theocratic apocalypse seeking governments.

Posted by: Parker Lonbaugh at June 13, 2019 09:37 PM (IoIaQ)

460 we don't have decisive proof that Iran did attack those tankers. they've denied it.

461 All the more these libertarians need to stop complaining about Trump selling the Saudis weapons (which they'd just buy from China) We can sell the the jets and missiles and just say "looks like you're all good to fight your own wars)

No need for a single US life to be lost here.

462 Round up the Japanese, Koreans, Indians, and maybe the Australians, all of whom must be getting nervous about the security of the Persian Gulf oil resources on which they depend. These countries have real naval capabilities. They should be willing to carry some of the burden with the US Navy.

Start convoying tankers through the Straits of Hormuz ASAP and publicly announce new Rules of Engagement: any attacks will be met with an armed response even if the attacker is not in international waters. If there is another attack on a tanker, destroy anything even vaguely looking like an attacker. Let the Iranians escalate from there if they choose to do so. We can take next steps from the main body of our fleet (carriers should be outside of the Persian Gulf) and from Saudi and UAE air bases. These would be to destroy Iranian air and naval bases in the area of the Straits.

Lean even harder on the international banking system to stop transactions with the Iranians. Debar some companies who are selling to Iran from the US financial/banking system and from doing business with in the United States; make sure the Japanese, Indians, etc do the same thing. I am sure we could do this to a couple of mid-sized German companies, making it clear to other German, French, etc they would be next. Let the Chinese know quietly that we may have to do it to some of their companies.
Don't get involved in a ground war against Iran. This country will not support such a thing and it would be too costly in lives and treasure.

Posted by: jamesmadison501 at June 14, 2019 02:23 AM (ryESB)

463 My guess is that Trump's response to Iran's military activities will be something akin to Joy Bejar's screaming and hair pulling-ugly but no results except to annoy the average man in the street.

467 > This is going to be an interesting call from Trump.

Looks like, either way it goes, Ace, you're positioned to criticize his policy.
