lolgf: Laid-Off Reporters Launch a New Side-Hustle to "Save Journalism"

Here's another way to "save journalism:" sign up to be an Uber driver and tell people the news when you drive them to Arby's.

Two reporters fired amid widespread industry-wide layoffs this year are launching a nonprofit organization to protect other journalists from a similar fate as big tech companies continue to threaten the industry's viability.

Psst: "Non-profits" mean they there is no profit that flows to stakeholders.

But founders and officers of the company still draw salaries!

So let's not pretend that this is something other than what it is: A side-hustle for "journalists" who can't get work at even the shittiest, trashiest websites.

Laura Bassett, a former culture and political reporter at HuffPost, and John Stanton, a former BuzzFeed News Washington bureau chief, founded the Save Journalism Project. It aims to save the industry from the "monopolistic power of big tech companies," according to a news release.

Well, it seems they realized that big tech companies can be dangerous the moment they got shit-canned.

According to the Save Journalism founders, firms like Google and Facebook dominate the digital advertising market, distributing news content without paying to produce it and dismantling traditional newspapers and digital news outlets.

The newly founded nonprofit estimates 2,400 journalists lost their jobs in 2019 so far.

Outstanding. Oh, I definitely want to destroy Google and Facebook, don't get it twisted.

But I can't say I'm upset that they're driving "journalists" into more honest occupations, like skimming money off the stupid.

In part, the Save Journalism Project aims to educate journalists on the side of the industry reporters tend to ignore -- the business side.

Bassett told BuzzFeed she never paid attention to the financial side of journalism before her recent layoff.

Oh perfect! Someone who admits she has absolutely no knowledge of the business side of journalism has started a donation-seeking organization to teach other journalists about the business side of journalism.

That sounds... pretty journalistic, actually! People who have absolutely no knowledge about a field presuming to lecture others about it and calling themselves "experts" in that area.

Meanwhile, Vice is reportedly laying off "senior editors" because Vice is trash and that trash is on fire and that fire is burning money.

Vice.com laid off its editor-in-chief Jonathan Smith and managing editor Rachel Schallom in a shakeup Tuesday which suggests cuts and restructuring are continuing as Vice Media looks to become profitable in 2019.

Oh, I'm sure you're on your way to profitability now.

Oh, and, obviously: Learn to code, bitches.

I seriously don't understand what this means. Google and FB dominate the advertising market, true.

But "distribute news content without paying for it"?

If you go to the news tab of Google and ask about East Timor it will list a dozen recent stories. You may get a gist of what's going on, but if you're interested in more than the literal headline you have to click through to the organization which published the story, to their website, to their attempt at monetization.

Facebook provides "news" chiefly in the form of links posted by my idiot lefty friends, again links going to other media sites.

(And I've never understood "FB promotes liberal news stories", I'm on FB every day and I've never seen a news story that wasn't posted by a friend. Nothing comes from FB).

92 There has been some good journalism, here and there, now and then, mostly in niche fields like science journalism and the like. And most of it is written by people who actually come from the sector they're writing about. But most journalists are specialists in journalism and that gets you something like math teachers who have a degree in education rather than math.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at June 06, 2019 01:26 PM (M9ntN)

Yes. They can get away with quoting some of an article (fair use), but mostly what these idiots are upset about is that companies would rather advertise through google, who can place them anywhere on the internet (including on news sites), then through the newspapers themselves. So the newspaper webpages see way less revenue then they think they should.

Basically, targeted ads is the real issue here.

And it's effected A LOT of industries, including traditional advertising agencies. But, again, reporters don't seem to be too upset about that.

Advertisers are thrilled, though -- now they can microtarget ads to people who actually might buy their product, instead of having to run an ad in a newspaper or on TV where most of the audience probably has zero interest in the product anyways.

(for example, Mercedes can microtarget upper middle class people who have searched for luxury cars in the past. Previously, they had to pay to place an ad in the print edition of the NYT, which might skew upper middle class, but also includes a lot of people who live in NYC and don't own a car, a lot of people who could never afford a mercedes, and a lot of people who aren't currently in the market for a new car.)

No. This idea is impossible in principle. There's no such thing as looking at "all sides" of a story. You have to editorialize somewhere in what you decide to cover and what you don't because you don't have infinite time and resources.

What we need to do is to dispense with the fiction that it's realistic, or even possible, for any news agency to pretend to us or to themselves that they're actually nonbiased. I want the biases of all news agencies public and in full view. There should be no confusion the ideological leanings of an organization, because there will always be there even if you like to say they won't be.

178 Yes. They can get away with quoting some of an article (fair use), but mostly what these idiots are upset about is that companies would rather advertise through google, who can place them anywhere on the internet (including on news sites), then through the newspapers themselves. So the newspaper webpages see way less revenue then they think they should.

Does anyone here actually use Google or Facebook?

They don't quote articles under fair use.

Go to Google now. Type "East Timor" and then hit the news tab. You will get a headline, a lede, and a link to the originator of the story.

This is a boon to the publishers. It's a traffic driver. How else would I know that the Globe and Mail is the first place to look?

And Facebook does not publish news stories. It just doesn't.

204 No. This idea is impossible in principle. There's no such thing as looking at "all sides" of a story. You have to editorialize somewhere in what you decide to cover and what you don't because you don't have infinite time and resources.

It would require an accurate and comprehensive acceptance and understanding of alternate world-views.

The Left is intellectually, morally and culturally incapable of comprehending a world view that is founded on the Imago Dei. They flat out don't have the language to even discuss it.

For example. Ask them what a "Right" is, and what you will most likely get (other than insults, deflection, or blank stare) is something akin to a Privilege or Perquisite.

Ask them what role Duty or Honor plays in a person's life - it will outright depress you and convince you that your dog has a more comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the topic.

257 This is pretty hilarious: Biker dude in suburban town near San Francisco builds a series of cement platforms in his front yard which, when viewed from the air, are in a swastika shape. Neighbors are freaking out. But the biker dude gives zeros fucks:

https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2019/06/04/ neighbors-on-edge-as-el-sobrante -man-displays-giant-swastika-on-front-yard/

"A community in Contra Costa County is on edge after a man displayed a giant cement swastika on his front yard.

The homeowner, Steve Johnson of El Sobrante, said the constructed sign isn't a swastika, but a Tibetan symbol. Neighbors aren't buying it -- they said Johnson has other displays of swastikas around his home and on his motorcycle.

"You can call it what you want, as far as I'm concerned," Johnson said when asked what the symbol was. "It's a Tibetan sign that was invented way before swastikas was invented."

"It represents me not having to pull weeds out of that part of my yard."

Vince Poehnelt has lived on the same block since 1967. As a man of German descent, he said Johnson's display offended him greatly.

"I'm very ashamed of it," Poehnelt said.

Neighbor Maria Gutierrez was concerned about what the symbol could mean for children and families in the area. "Now, it's not safe," she said.

Others are worried about their property values dropping as a result of the display.

"I tell them, 'Hey, I've been helping you out.' Tell them I love them," Johnson said when asked about what he'd say to the neighbors who were offended. He went on to ask, likely sarcastically, "What is a swastika?"

"I don't think he's a hardcore Neo-Nazi. He may be racist," Poehnelt said.

"I own this house and I'll put what the hell I want on my front yard and it's none of you guys' business, so get the hell off my property!" Johnson told members of the media.

When asked if he was Tibetan, Johnson said, "I could be."

Go to Google now. Type "East Timor" and then hit the news tab. You will get a headline, a lede, and a link to the originator of the story.

Posted by: Bandersnatch at June 06, 2019 01:41 PM (fuK7c)

If you use google news (or apple news on your phone), they post like one or two sentence excerpts from stories.

And if you post a news story to facebook, I believe it does the same. granted, it's users posting the story, not Facebook.

Also, Google Amp (Facebook and Apple have similar services) pull entire webpages in to their world for quicker loading / better displaying on mobile devices.
Publishers have to opt in, but it takes traffic away from their real sites.

"I don't like it" leaves you with no recourse. "It makes me unsafe" gives you more flexibility. Now a lot of people are like "hmmm... why do I need to pay 6% commission to someone to sell my house when 90% of the people who come see my house found it online and not through the intrepid work of a realtor?"

However, I attended a conference recently in a local hotel here, a swanky one. All the pomp and puffery, it makes me laugh. Among other things, on a display table near the lobby, between the front doors and the dining room, there was a great array of newspapers, especially the local rag.

This was in the morning.

When the conference was over, in the afternoon, as I was passing the table on which all the newspapers had been laid out in the morning.... pretty much all the papers were still there.

326 With the stream of searchable news narrowing due to algorithm manipulation and the move towards deplatforming thoughts that don't dovetail with the narrative, there is, IMO, a small opening for a resurgence of the true hometown paper actually staffed by members of the community.

I can't say it would be a booming industry making millions, but it could provide a few families a living. The catch is it would require actual work, investigative journalism and leaving the opinion to the opinion page instead of inserted into every article.

In short, it would require you to be a trustworthy source of local info to have any value to people. I don't know if any journalism graduates would have ever had that taught to them.

But hey, if you can teach a millennial to drink Manhattans and Old Fashions, you could probably teach them to read unbiased words on an actual piece of paper again. Maybe.

I hope to relocate in a few years myself. I want similar answers: No HOA, no noisy neighbors, and no schools close by (a nearby school guarantees afternoon and morning traffic jams and -- with older kids -- a swarm of the little monsters making noise near my house). Yeah, lawn, off, all that.

As the operators were handing out popsicles from 2009 to 2017 they also were racking up 22,000 summonses and nearly $4.5 million in fines for traffic violations, the city said. The operators had been cited for running red lights, parking near fire hydrants and blocking cross walks, among other things, the news release said.

What is a memory leak? How do you fix a memory leak? What if it looks like a memory leak, but is really just an efficient cache? What is SOLID? What is Pub/Sub? 446 336 I saw a swastika over a gate in Indonesia that could have been 1,000 years old. Even knowing the context it's disconcerting.

Anyone putting a swastika anywhere, especially their lawn, is an asshole.

The ancient Hindu symbol is a trivium. After WWII it has only one meaning.
Posted by: Bandersnatch at June 06, 2019 02:05 PM (fuK7c)

I've seen swastika's painted on the cliff walls over ancient Anasazi dwellings in the desert southwest - those were definitely 1,000 years old.

The question as to the man in the news report isn't whether or not he's an asshole, it's Does he have the right to BE an asshole on his own property? What if he wanted to fly a Confederate Flag, since that's been deemed verboten by the SJW's too?
