Open Thread, Plus: Game of Thrones is a Trash-Fire and Not Even the Shill Media Can White-Knight For It Any More
Question: Which TV Series Ended the Worst?

Below, Pitch Meeting guy mocks the show's rushed, bored, indifferent botch of the ending. Even shill media sites, which usually claim to LOVE all the corporate-made geek culture things, are reading the room and bowing to actual viewer reaction and daring to criticize that which was previously beyond criticism.

Personally, I don't even mind the show that much because it's sucked for the last three years and my expectations were low already and lowered still by episode 3, which gave away the trajectory of the coming plot.

And the show rushed through last season, and now set itself up for not one but two Final Boss Fights in just the last two episodes, so I knew these were going to be rushed, slapdash pieces of shit, too.

Spoilers below.

Question, Before We Get to the Rest of the Post: bluebell suggested this question: Which show is ending more disastrously, the BBC's modern Sherlock or Game of Thrones? I guess we can add in Lost and Twin Peaks (both the original show and The Return) into the competition, too. Oh, and I hear Dexter was a disaster at the end, though I never saw a minute of it.

Many people are upset about the Villain Turn a character took last episode. I think that turn could have been decent -- if this had been a ten episode season, and we had seen the character descend into evil a little at a time, so that we would start anticipating it, then accepting it, and then seeing it as both organic and maybe even inevitable.

But the way they rushed through this -- all major BULLET POINTS!!! with barely any dramatization around them -- makes this all feel like characters are now just doing things because the producers are bored and have been bored for years and want to move on to ruining another franchise (Star Wars, in this case -- which I'm not sure can be further ruined).

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have repeatedly stated that the crowning moment of this book series to them was the Red Wedding, and their major goal was just to do the show justice, and garner enough of an audience, to get greenlit into season 3 so they could film that.

Well, they did.

And that being their major goal -- they began getting very bored of the show by season 5 and had to start doing their own writing. They had to start doing their own writing even before St. George's actual book material ran out, because, let's face it, the next two books written by George R.R. Martin were overlong, under-achieving cash-grabs. George R.R. Martin had intended for the narrative to end at book 3, and then use a five or seven year time jump to advance up to the two books that would conclude the series, but I think he was psyched to finally be making money on the books and so he cranked out the piece of shit books 4 and 5 to fill in the years he previously had thought were too uneventful to bother writing about, except for catch-me-up bits in the beginning of the next book.

And those books would not have made for very good tv -- they did not make for good reading, by and large -- and so Benioff and Weiss began improvising in season 5.

And it showed. Martin's books might not have provided strong material but they didn't actually improve on his crap; they just made it shorter. Which is, I admit, a good thing, but not good enough.

And then we got to the actual conclusion. The producers had, it has been widely reported, a basic outline of what GRRM envisioned the last two books to eventually (???) be about.

And it seems like they filmed that. The outline, I mean. Just the outline. Bullet point here, film the bullet point. Bullet point there, film the bullet point.

Let's crap out this piece of crap and go home.*

Like I said, my expectations were very diminished and I've gotten used to this I-hate-my-job-and-want-to-die style of storytelling, so I don't really care about how crap it's all gotten. I viewed the last episode like a normie, no longer invested in these Writer's Conveniences which are alleged to be characters -- there was a lot of spectacle and rushing around, and I have to admit, I enjoyed it on just a basic time-wasting level.

But I'm so, so HAPPY the media is taking another blow and embarrassing itself with its continued, determined incompetence.

Anything that reduces their esteem and influence, well, I'm all about that.

Also below: My feelings about the media, in song form. Content warning for language on that second one.

By the way, although I've tried to only hint about spoilers, the thread will contain spoilers, so try to keep out if you haven't seen the last episode yet.

* "Let's crap out this piece of crap" is a line from the last season of Community, where they just want to make a quick cash-grab movie over a weekend.

Oh, by the way, the SJWs are hair-on-fire too, of course, because fictional women aren't all superheroes and goddesses like Cat-Lady Marvel:

I have to give the show a few charity points for at least making the SJW weirdos want to cut on themselves.

3 I stopped watching after Joffrey's wedding and much-longed for death, because the series was just too grim. Bad things kept happening to the only semi-decent people, while the truly awful prospered.

8 It's pretty obvious that everyone wants the story to end, writers, actors, and HBO. It is so insanely rushed compared to previous seasons. This really should have been a 10 episode season culmination with the Long Night, and then another entire 10 episode season to deal with stuff in the South.

YouTubers keep pushing the rumor that HBO actually wanted 10 episodes and asked for 10 episodes and were willing to budget for 10 episodes, but Benioff and Weiss said, "Nah, we got this, we'll do it in six and it'll be great."

I don't know if that's true. But both of the past two seasons were short seasons, and HBO is very dependent on this show (and the next show). I don't think HBO would have an interest in wrapping things up earlier than necessary.

48 I dunno. I'm kind of in the middle because my opinion is middling.

The first season I couldn't keep the various houses apart and why who had a grudge against whom. But you got horses and armor and incest and magic and things that go bump in the night and tits. So that was worth attention.

I grew to embrace it and yeah I've watched all of the mumbeldy seasons and I know who is who and why they have grudges. This whole season has disappointed, but maybe not disproportionally. It was a middling show that I got overly attracted to because of castles and dragons and tits. It shouldn't bother me that it's not ending well.

So, I will wrap this up with One Real Problem.

Jon Snow got brought back from the dead. When you get brought back from the dead you have to change somehow, you lose something, you're not really you. Batman covered this perfectly with the Lazarus Pit, and if Batman isn't canon what is?

This Jon Snow is just all oh I was dead for a while. No biggie. There was supposed to be a price for that.

61 I disagree about Dany turning evil.

It's been hinted at since early in season 2 when she threatened to burn down Qarth if they didn't let her in. She didn't do it for two reasons, 1) they did let her in, and 2) she couldn't actually do it because her dragons were small.

She's had it in her to burn cities to the ground (as she liked to say) since early in the show, but it's been her advisers like Jorah and Missandei who held her back. Tyrion was acting in that regard, but she had grown to distrust him. Plus, with Jorah dead and Missandei murdered at the hands of the Mountain under order from Cersei, she was distraught.

On top of that, she's had the love/fear thing working in her since the beginning as well. She's wanted to be loved, but she's never been able to maintain it. The only time the people loved her was either with a mixture of fear like her horde at the beginning of season 2 or the slaves of Mereen, who immediately turned on her because they didn't actually love her. She had learned that fear was the way to control, as she had done with the masters in Slaver's (now Dragon's) Bay.

This has been building up for eight years since she decided to burn the witch alive at the end of season one.

dear lord, the padding. THE PADDING.

Also, all the time in Dorne was a huge waste of time. YES, THE FINAL ONE PARAGRAPH REVEAL THAT THE LAME COWARD PRINCE ACTUALLY HAD A KICKASS VENGEANCE PLAN ALL ALONG, but that did not justify the hours of boring prose about Dorne and other people who don't matter.

Also, Quentin Martel did not matter, and neither does the pretender "Aegon Targaryan" the blackfyres have raised to pretend to be the heir.

this was obvious -- people introduced in book 5 of a 7 book series cannot possibly matter to the endgame.

Here's my read on that:

Dorne was in the books, but the showrunners didn't know how they fit in with the endgame, so they included them. When they found out the endgame from Martin, they realized that any contributions they made were inconsequential, so they wrote them out of the show as fast as possible. They obviously never really liked it, and dropped it as fast as they could.

Yeah, watched it mainly because Stana Katic was very hot and the dialogue was witty.

The last year, it was completely disjointed and the story line sucked. Supposedly Katic and Nathan Fillion hated each other the last couple of years, they shot their lines on separate days.

The last scene was filmed a few years before, and was only intended to be seen if the show was cancelled. Which is it stuck out like a sore thumb.

168 I liked the ending of Lost. They all died and were in Purgatory. I guess you have to be a Catholic to understand it.

***************************

They didn't actually all die on the island, some escaped with the pilot on the plane, so the fucked up scenes where everybody be living perfect fake lives in purgatory had to be way into the future when the ones who escaped died as well, presumably of old age.

It might be Tyrion, or even Arya, but somebody will. That was the point of Daenyris' sudden violent madness.

If we're keeping with foreshadowing and the strong resonance of family character in members of the family, Jon would probably hold a trial for barbarity, and then execute her with his family sword, as his father told him the man passing judgment must always do.

Also, he'll blow off Drogon's fire before then because in this version Targaryens are just magically immune to fire.

Maybe he'll even just command it to throw Dany off its back.

The ending I'd LIKE to see is Snow somehow kills the last dragon, and then abandons Dani to go back to being King in the North, and she can't stop him. She ends up on the Iron Throne, but it's a hollow victory and eventually some minor noble is going to take it from her, because she's nothing without the dragons.

But what I think they'll end up doing is having Snow attempt a coup, but it fails and he's captured. She decides to publicly execute him with dragon fire.... but she forgets that he's actually a Targaryen, so he survives without a scratch (like when she 'birthed' the dragons). It destroys her claim to the throne, and her supporters abandon her.

Then the red comet returns and hits Kings Landing. Westeros explodes, sending tsunamis across the Narrow Sea to destroy Essos.

ANYWAYS, she got offered a chance to throw down at Helm's Deep. It would have been a legendarily bad idea and wrecked more than one character arc, and she came out against it. Said Arwen didn't need to be a warrior babe.

238 I think what makes this situation unique is the book series was never finished. So we had the slow building horror of watching a beloved series crash and burn right when it was at it's most vulnerable point: the narrative death spiral when the books were full eclipsed. That's been pretty interesting to watch, it's kind of a meta narrative beyond the show itself.

The Kingkiller Chronicles is in a similar plight: the books aren't finished and they are about to begin production of a movie.

well... AKSHUALLY... if you remember, Caitlyn Stark had captured Tyrion and intended to execute him after a show trial for a crime we all know he was innocent of.

THAT'S what caused that fight in King's Landing -- Jamie wanted to capture Ned so they could do an exchange of hostages to get his (quite innocent) brother back.

333 What streaming has done, because of binge watching, is destroy pace. They give you a beginning, they give you (a usually open) ending, and the rest of the season meanders. If you're watching several episodes in a row, you don't need every episode to move the plot along incrementally, that can be every other episode or even less.

TV series weren't that much better. There was a hell of a lot of filler to get to 22 episodes per season, and the episodic format made it worse, IMHO. At least with the streaming shows it seems like it tries to advance the plot and set things up for the finale.

The gay character arc was annoying, but I think the two characters killed off wasn't too bad. I suspect that they know the show was heading towards a final season and wanted to clear some of the subplots before then, which is a nice change from the usual practice. Also, the show is based off a single book, so they have to be running a bit then with material and running into the logical inconsistencies of the world.

Sunday's episode with Danaerys nuking the city actually pleasantly surprised me, because I thought the writers were getting too chummy pleasing the SJW fans with that character's revenge porn. There were many clues about her viciousness, and now the writers finally made her a villain, and spent a good chunk of the episode showing the human cost of life - soldiers being slaughtered after surrending, and innocent civilians running for their lives and being burnt to crisps. So I expect her to die in the final episode.Normally I avoid all fandom and fan reactions to anything I watch - but I couldn't help revel in the tears and anger this episode brought.

404 I actually enjoyed the 3rd Episode a lot. Arya killing the Night King was foreshadowed and just a total surprise still as I watched it. I thought it was the best episode.

Episode 5 was just overkill and rushed. Do not know how it is gonna wrap up, but I have really enjoyed the characters and their interactions.

The Americans is a great show. The ending was perfect and believable. If you have not watched it on Amazon Prime, I urge you to start watching. Fantastic show.

Seinfeld was Meh.

Lost was a complete waste of 5 years. Worst ending EVER.

I enjoyed Mad Men. The whole series was just so well done and impressive. I have a crush on Jon Hamm.

410 392 Spoiler alert.

I loved it. It's probably my favorite episode of the series.

And it's explicitly because they'd built up Dany's viciousness, which has ALWAYS been just below the surface, pretty much since the beginning of the show.

I'm removed from fandom, so I was shocked to see the reaction around me. It seems like I'm part of a very small population that actually likes it. And I'm okay with that.

At that point Jon was part of the Night's Watch, and thus couldn't take the throne. Plus, revealing it would have likely split the kingdom into civil war between Stannis, Jon's supporters, and the Lannisters. While the whole kingdom did eventually fall into civil war, Ned could be excused for trying to avoid that very scenario.

Posted by: Colorado Alex In Exile at May 14, 2019 09:41 PM (SgjGX)

Also, Ned is observing the actual line of succession after the death of his friend, the King. That doesn't include reverting back to the previous line of kings.

436 There was a decent British show called "Life on Mars". About a cop who gets shot and transported back to the 70's (as a cop) and doesn't know what's real and what isn't.

They remade it in America with Harvey Keitel of all people. The ending of the British show was pretty good. The ending of the American one is honestly one of the stupidest things in the history of all forms of entertainment, ever.

-
I liked Life On Mars but your comments reminded me of a three part Brit series I liked, Ordeal of Innocence, based on an Agatha Christie book. I thought it was considerably rawer then any Christie I'd ever read or seen (plus one of the wealthy, aristocratic family's adopted children is black, certainly an unlikely occurrence in 1950s England). I then learned that the series took great liberties with the plot in the book including who the murderer is. But, nevertheless, I did like it, particularly the twist of the knife at the very end.

Because Jon Snow would have been dead. They were plotting to kill Dany while she was living in exile. All the people in power were very much anti-Targaryen.

Also Jon Snow had already taken the oath to join the Night's Watch, so in the eyes of Ned Stark, his claim to the throne was gone.

That's because they were entirely too smart for their own good. They filmed the kids' ending while filming season 2 or 3.

They boxed themselves in, so when they ended up taking the characters in completely different directions than expected, they had to whiplash right back to that original decision. They shot themselves in the foot.

455 Question: Which TV Series Ended the Worst?

Other than MASH, of course ...

There were a couple of Netflix series (fuzzy foreign series) that started out pretty well - interesting and lively - but ended in piles of stupidity and idiocy. One was this Icelandic series about a cop investigating a murder (body washed up or something) ... Very good series until they tried to wrap it all up and it was so stupid I felt like drowning the writers, producers and everyone else associated with that show. Can't remember the name. Fun for about 8 episodes and then straight into the trash heap.

Another was this German series Parfum. It could have been interesting except for the fact that the writers, directors and everyone else involved were obviously retarded. And, since it was a German series, they had to advocate for the smell of shit every chance they got. Literally. Literally, literally. One of the episodes was called "Skatole".

Worst movie ending ever (one of the worst) was Fight Club. All that psycho-mumbo-jumbo at the end was dumb and made no sense, whatsoever. Luckily, the movie was good enough to be able to put that shitty ending aside but that ending did blow donkey shlong.

Members of the Revolutionary Communist Party of America launched an advertising campaign at the University of California-Los Angeles in early May by chalking and distributing signage in an apparent effort to recruit college students to subscribe to their communist ideology.

The group set up signs, handed out flyers, and wrote out chalk markings, as seen in photos obtained by Campus Reform, even after being asked by staff and housing officials to stop their activities. The group's distributed manifesto condemned capitalism, as well as jokes based on race, gender, nationality, etc. Chalked markings on the ground and walls asked students to speak.

The Revolutionary Communist Party passed out flyers urging revolution -- but saying it will not provoke violence "at this stage" -- calling for the formation of "organized fighting forces," claiming the group must be ready to "continually train and deploy new forces and leaders," and called for the establishment of a "New Socialist Republic of North America."

466 Also, Ned is observing the actual line of succession after the death of his friend, the King. That doesn't include reverting back to the previous line of kings.

That's one of the other things that's annoying me about this season, the pretense that Order of Succession matters.

Yeah, Jon has a better legal claim than Dany but she didn't get there by legal claim. Her brother had a better claim. He was a twit. She got an army of loyal Dothraki, and one of Unsullied, and a small handful of dragons.

That's her claim to the throne. Armies loyal to her and the ability to win the war.

Jon's blood is meaningless without the fact that everyone loves him and want's to follow him.

Doctor Who. Before the reboot/whatever. Last episode had The Doctor
and Ace after the adventure doing some bantering, then The Doctor says
something like "come on, Ace - we've got work to do!"

I thought that was a good ending - open ended, left a lot to the imagination, and all that.

That was actually written after the show was filmed and added at the last minute, as they had an inkling they wouldn't be back.
"There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea's
asleep and the rivers dream. People made of smoke, and cities made of
song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice and
somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to
do."

477 Eh, GRRM is done writing because that's what happens when you create this giant craptastic world of nihilistic dreck. Sure, yeah, he was brilliant and didn't want to use all those fantasy tropes, blah blah blah. But tropes exist for a reason, and tropes work, and if you abandon them, you'd better damn well have the skills.

But when you preferred method to deal with characters is by killing them (lazy lazy lazy), and creating a world that's just begging for the White Walkers to do a good scrubbing of all the manipulative sociopaths, you write yourself into a dozen corners, like GRRM.

483 The Galactica reboot. Yeesh. First two season were great. Then season three came along and drove right off a cliff. If they had the mid-season end point for season 4 be the series ending, it might have redeemed the show. But nope, they returned for the second half of season 4 and in my opinion, total dumpster fire.

The mid-season ending: they find the nuclear blasted remains of a lifeless Earth-like planet and are standing around with devastated faces, saying what are we going to do now?

539 Movies are better. Most have beginnings middles and ends right there in just a couple of hours.

I've gotten interested in the YooToob channels DUST and one or two others that show sci-fi short films. A lot of those are well written, tight and over in less than 20 minutes. Many are speculative and trying to pitch a full-length movie and not very well fleshed out, but overall, for pacing, I like them.

Lost's ending is unforgivable. After season 3, the network approached the producers and asked them for a plan to end the show. The producers huddled with their writers and said, "We can do this in 3 seasons."

Lost started out great. The first few episodes were among the best TV ever, but then it became apparent that the writers had no clue what the fvck they were doing and they didn't even bother to explain anything. Once that was apparent it was clear that there was no reason to keep watching since they kept introducing new things and then leaving them and never explaining anything about any of it. That only goes so far ... 5 episodes, tops. I mean, what was the fvcking story with that big button the guy had to press every 20 minutes, or whatever it was?? You can't just make shit like that up for a story and then leave it.

In Lost, the whole story was the MacGuffin.

Garsh, if only the producers had had the foresight to put PDJT's head on a pike somewhere in the scenery just as they did for GWB!

That'd have kept the baying hounds at bay!

I'd be willing to bet that Candice Aiston's life has been a waste of her life.

625 I can't really compare the two because I've never watched a minute of Thrones but Sherlock was a horrible, bad, really no good ending. The show fucking pirouetted the shark when we found out Watson's wife was Bond, Jane Bond.

As for TV shows you will absolutely NOT be disappointed by, watch Cobra Kai. It revisits the Karate Kid characters in the present day and, instead of centering around Daniel-san, the main character is Johnny. It's just two 10 episode seasons and the episodes are only 30 minutes. It is FANTASTIC. Oh and, as a bonus, it mercilessly pokes fun at liberals and SJWs.

626 Damn. So sad I missed this thread. Well, if anyone checks it later...
Worst Series Ender Ever: Dexter

627 i rate Breaking Bad's ending as "meh, okay". like Deep Space Nine's.
TNG's endings were good. Season 7 was overall, weak, but the last two episodes did well, first at wrapping up Ensign Ro's arc, then at bookending the season premiere.

628 Cobra Kai's first season was perfect. I don't think it needed a second season but maybe the third will justify it.
Although... I feel like it could be going Game Of Thrones here. Adding new characters and additional scope can cause it to lose focus

629 'Firefly got screwed out of having good endings'

Firefly got screwed out of having a Joss Whedon male-feminist-ally ending. I've read the graphic novel sequels to The Big Damn Movie. And it's getting worse over there.

630 last comment tonight: the fly episode of Breaking Bad was the keystone of the series. it was symbolic of so much.

632 The Good Wife ended terribly.
Also, Battlestar Galactica's ending was a huge disappointment.

633 I never watched the show, but I did read the first three books in the series, given to me by my son. I gave up after the thrid book, and wouldn't read any more- all of the protagonists I found toe be sympathetic, and that I was rooting for, got killed off by the middle of book three, nobody left but assorted heels I wished would drop dead.

634 Battlestar Galactica ends when they find and settle on New Caprica. Everything after that is coke-fueled delusions.

635 A few people have rightly mentioned BattleStar Galactica, but they don't do justice to just how terrible that season finale truly was.

To fully comprehend what a travesty that show ended on you have to know not only what we the viewers were led to believe throughout the series - both through actual events and insinuations in earlier episodes - but also the "after the fact" interviews with the show's writers and creator.

I'm not going to go into everything - some guy some years back wrote an epic summary of just what a betrayal Daybreak was - but a few key points.

1. There is no question, despite what the series finale claims, that the show took place in the future.
a. The constellations in the Tomb of Athena are from the point of view of "our" Earth as they exist in our present. So the Lords of Kobol, who created the tomb in the show's "past", either had the knowledge of where the lost 13th tribe came from/returned to, or, if Daybreak is to be believed, knew that in their "future" the surviving colonists of a genocide would randomly jump the last surviving battlestar to a planet that would, 150,000 years in that planet's future be in a position where those constellations would look like that.
b. The song "All Along The Watchtower" exists and radio waves from its broadcast have been traveling through space for years. So either it was broadcast from our Earth back in the 1960s to eventually be picked up by our descendants, or it was created by an "original" Cylon before their civilization was destroyed, traveled through space to be picked up by the colonists, and then was somehow recreated 150,000 years later on our Earth in the same language as the colonists, despite the fact that "our" Earth has evolved hundreds, if not thousands, of different languages and dialects since our ancestors started speaking.

2. The freaking writers admitted they threw-out their plans for the series sometime during the third season not caring about the previous established facts and continuity - which is how we got...
a. Four "human" characters suddenly all discovering that they were "unique" Cylon models (four of "the five").
b. Kara Thrace, Starbuck, being unceremoniously killed only to reappear with a mysterious Viper ship and knowledge of the location of (a fake) Earth (the "original" Cylon's planet), later being revealed to be an "angel of god", and completely ignoring all the background they had been building into her character's childhood.
c. Absolutely no coherent resolution as to who/what the Lords of Kobol were and/or how they related to the Cylon "God" (or "head" Six and "head" Baltar).

3. Ronald D. Moore himself admitted there was never a Cylon "plan" (which to be fair was pretty obvious by season two).

I can't think of any other series that has ended so horribly that it actually makes it impossible to enjoy re-watching the awesome, earlier episodes. In fact I still have the final "season 4.5" dvds in their unopened, wrapped in plastic, box.

Fuck - I'm apparently still not over this.
