The Intellectual Dark Web and Education [KT]

iewww.jpeg

I have been running across the term "Intellectual Dark Web" lately. Sounds kind of sinister. The first definition I ran across was just something vague about people who got their messages out even though they bypassed the mainstream media. But I guess this is an actual group of people:

It turns out the IDW is mostly a collection of disillusioned liberals looking for a place to have honest conversation

Daniel Miessler took it upon himself to figure out what these people believed on all the major issues:

During the research I started noticing some weird stuff about this supposedly hateful IDW group of Harris, Weinstein, Rubin, and Shapiro. Namely, they're all Jewish, and yet a number of them are often labeled as white supremacists and even neo-Nazis. That completely breaks the stupidmeter.

Some of these people may not be your favorites, but at least they are talking to each other, if not to you. Anyway, Miessler's chart of the positions of six of the leading members of the "Intellectual Dark Web" is helpful. Take a look.

Just so you know where he's coming from:

Rather than bash them due to something you heard from this one place--or that one friend--take the time to actually listen. Most of them are progressive just like you and me. And if you're not liberal that's fine too--listening will show you that true discussion is still possible.

There's a longer list of members in a piece this week by Bari Weiss in the NYT:

The closest thing to a phone book for the I.D.W. is a sleek website that lists the dramatis personae of the network, including Mr. Harris; Mr. Weinstein and his brother and sister-in-law, the evolutionary biologists Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying; Jordan Peterson, the psychologist and best-selling author; the conservative commentators Ben Shapiro and Douglas Murray; Maajid Nawaz, the former Islamist turned anti-extremist activist; and the feminists Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Christina Hoff Sommers. But in typical dark web fashion, no one knows who put the website up.

The term "Intellectual Dark Web" was coined by Eric Weinstein, the brother of Bret Weinstein, the professor at the center of the Evergreen State drama.

A year ago, Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying were respected tenured professors at Evergreen State College, where their Occupy Wall Street-sympathetic politics were well in tune with the school's progressive ethos. Today they have left their jobs, lost many of their friends and endangered their reputations.

All this because they opposed a "Day of Absence," in which white students were asked to leave campus for the day. For questioning a day of racial segregation cloaked in progressivism, the pair was smeared as racist. Following threats, they left town for a time with their children and ultimately resigned their jobs.

Eric Weinstein's commentary:

"Nobody else reacted. That's what shocked me," Mr. Weinstein said. "It told me that a culture that told itself it was radically open-minded was actually a culture cowed by fear.

This brings us to a challenging piece from Quillette, which is reviled by The Left partly because it sometimes publishes pieces by members of the IDW. After Academia is a pretty dramatic title. Can education bypass academia the way the IDW has bypassed mainstream media? Nobody is listening to conservatives. Will anyone in academia listen to the IDW? What can conservatives learn from the IDW?

The piece focuses on the Evergreen State drama, with a video documentary included:

I keep being invited to talk about free speech on college campuses and every time I'm invited I make the same point: that this isn't about free speech and this is only tangentially about college campuses. This is about a breakdown in the basic logic of civilisation, and it's spreading. College campuses may be the first dramatic battle but of course this is going to find its way into the courts; it's already found its way into the tech sector. It's going to find its way to the highest level of governance if we aren't careful, and it actually does jeopardise the ability of civilisation to continue to function.

--Bret Weinstein

The author of the piece has a girlfriend from Bulgaria. About the behavior of students, faculty and administration at Evergreen State:

This is exactly the kind of ideological coercion for which Bulgarians have no tolerance: the chain of citations is immaterial if the behaviour is identical. Their society was destroyed by totalitarian tendencies, albeit dressed in different academese. And this isn't an academic panel discussion; at Evergreen, gangs of thugs prowled the campus with baseball bats in search of thought criminals.

These radical ideologies are empowering, but not in the inspiring way that this term is usually used. This power corrupts and, more importantly, it attracts the easily corrupted. Concurrently, a similar corrupting process seems to have occurred in academia, which has ballooned into an administrative morass, the primary purpose of which is to accrue rent-seeking profit, as predicted by Parkinson's Law. Parkinson's Law holds that a task will take as long as the time allotted to complete it. It seems to be a kind of social equilibrium theorem applicable to any complex organisation. Normally such organisations would simply collapse under the weight of their own bureaucratic inefficiency, but academia is different. It will never be allowed to collapse because education is a right.

"It will never be allowed to collapse because education is a right." Until it collapses.

I liked this:

"If we are to address this problem and rescue education, we first need to distinguish between what I will call the classical and modern variants. Classical education involves the acquisition of culturally and scientifically useful knowledge, and fostering an ability to think critically to further understanding. Modern education, on the other hand, is accreditation by an officially sanctioned seminary." . . . .

So, do you see viable ways to get an education while skipping the destructiveness and expense of academia? There are a few suggestions in the piece. You might want to read it.

Hope you have a great weekend.

Nestled in the cocoon of progressive thought. So...pretty much an idiot.

I have no sympathy for these people. If they are so ignorant that they can't see the obvious parallels between current behavior on our campuses and Nazi Germany or Communist China, then they are too stupid to help and deserve what they got.

I'm sorry. "Intellectual" and "liberal" together is an oxymoron. The "progressive" worldview, which is just academic mental masturbation, has never bothered to question the attempts by "liberals" to "make the world a better place" have only resulted in making the world a worse place. Until they examine their history and conclude they have been, and always will be, full of shit, i.e., cease being "progressive", I won't waste my time listening to their drivel.

10 "Modern education, on the other hand, is accreditation by an officially sanctioned seminary."
________

But is that not exactly what the universities which brought us classical education started out as? Well, "officially sanctioned" was more a status that developed over time, than their start.

And rather less important than people think. The earliest of the traditional universities started in the 1100s, and were very well established by 1300, yet continued their mission until the late 20th C. That doesn't fit with the model of "right forever on the scaffold, wrong forever on the throne" that seems to underly a lot of the above.

In other words, I detect more of a common ancestry than they suspect between the IDW and their opponents.

Jeebus, you're in higher education, an echo chamber in fact.

Find some "good ol' boys" and ask them to take you on a snipe hunt. In the post-hunt socializing, give a look at where you've hung out before and ask your new acquaintances what they think of that world. Don't defend it, just listen and ask questions in order to understand their perspective.

68 On intellectuals, it's always good to keep in mind Orwell's "You'd have to be an intellectual to believe that. No ordinary man could be such a fool."

Also Waugh's point, in the 30s, that the word "intellectual" was shifting from reference to the rational mind to an aesthetic emphasis. (Yes, it was happening already, then.)

So yeah, point being, credentialing can be used as a two edged sword. It protects you from the charlatans, it also keeps the legit professionals in line. So it remains entirely possible a non-credentialed person is perfectly capable. Just not allowed to be a member of the guild, because of some non-approved behavior that has NOTHING to do with his or her skills or application of same.

Shapiro is part of the IDW; like him or don't, he's clearly a cultural conservative. Dave Rubin is quite vocally an EX-liberal, turned libertarian. Jordan Peterson is arguably the central figure of the IDW, and he's not even mentioned here. Rubin and Peterson quit Patreon out of solidarity with Sargon of Akkad, and they're all very critical of the totalitarians both on campus and in tech, much moreso than most in the GOP.

I mean, jeez, some of you need to get out of your silos.

And on top of it, every H1B with that cert got the answers from someone else.

And yet employers always want candidates with the certifications. Everyone knows it's a sham, but everyone still pretends the certs mean something.

145 I'm sorry, but it's hard to take the IDW at all seriously after Ben Shapiro's disastrous BBC interview. I feel some measure of leniency in grading- it really is impossible to win when the other guy controls the camera- but wow, it was bad. The interviewer quotes Shapiro as saying that Jews love to build, and Arabs love to roll around in their own sewage. Benny protests that he meant the Hamas leadership, the interviewer quotes the part explicitly saying nope, all Palestinians. Benny absolutely melts down, calling the interview with a nobody and claiming the interviewer is only in it for the shekels. Which is hiliariously similar to the dumber white nationalist arguments, but never mind.

I've seen and heard about tons of IDW events, but intellectually there is no real identity to act on beyond a very vague appeal to Western civilization. It's all lowest common denominator, clean your room stuff. Which is all well and good if you're selling SWPL books, not so much if you want to be the intellectual vanguard of a mass movement.

Guilianni was trying to bolster the confidence of the new Ukrainian Regime to continue their internal investigation into Obama/Biden influencing their prosecution of BeauBiden/Russian Oligarch/Pay to Play scandal.

Apparently, he was informed that he would be walking into a setup where he would be exposed to some nefarious Ukrainians and would be duly embarassed and his purpose negated/obscured.

He can get the same thing done from home.

But it's mostly just theater, and paying gigs. For them.

If people are looking for true leaders of a movement, it's generally not going to be happening in groups like this. They're doing their thing, and that's fine.

168 The comments here are eye-opening. People decrying thought-bubbled liberals while announcing they have no idea what the IDW is, and/or just blindly taking the word of other people.

One of the biggest factors in spreading AIDS, at least in the Bay Area?

The refusal of bathhouse owners to change their practices/ policies, thereby promoting the rapid spread of the virus.

Even Randy Shilts in his poxy book that to some extent blamed Reagan (who I guess was supposed to drop everything to save the degenerates from the consequences of degeneracy) also blamed the bathhouse owners.

176 "viable ways to get an education while skipping the destructiveness and expense of academia?"

Well, much education can be had online for free, but many employers require 4 years of indoctrination in Orwellian institutions. (Comey Brennan Jarrett Obama ... KollegeKommieKids, who is promoting this kind?)
We need to remove the "credentialed" HaHavahd types from the seats of power, and install adults that have real world abilities. Different angles on argument from a new group marketing themselves as an IDW ... still the same church, different pew. imo

In the FBI for example, we got a like minded group of Harvard commies that could give "special handling" to cases involving their cartel (Hillary got the special team to special handle her crimes, Trump got them to attack him). The answer is not different academic argument, it is to promote from the field agents, those with street experience, not servants of the "elite". That applies to journalism as well.

Real independent thinkers with their own website income ... might have a future in implementing change. AoS deserves more market share ... PJ Watson may have to go independent ... already has some site in case he gets further blacklisting. And their are public servant types that have not been tainted by higher power ... I think Hannity had one agent on, saying how disgusting it is to hear Comey destroying "the institution" others worked hard at for decades. These are the voices of hands on experience we need.

The IDW might make some valid points along the way, but look more like New Coke to me, rebranding of the old theme ... as if all Truth comes from academic argument, not real world hustle. They just needed to come out with a new label. idk, didn't read it all.

At the remains of the day, I would be impressed with Shapiro if he had half of Milo's integrity. "Yes, the Palestinians keep choosing leaders that leave them in squalor on the off hand chance they get to kill more Jews. I hold them in total contempt: why don't you?" Ben keeps directing people to his list of dumb/ bad things he's said, but that's the problem. People want to hear what you have to say about it, not what your handlers put out. I'm sure that plays a role, but I'd be surprised if that many black and hispanic men were gay/bisexual. Or maybe they are. You'd have to actively work to get to those numbers, and they separate the straight cases. Only 1700 black men got it that way.

Don't miss that there is not a white male, heterosexual number given. If you read the numbers on the column and do some quick guesstimates it's under 1000 (one thousand) cases a year. And that apparently includes hispanics, so actual white-white numbers are probably under 500.

228 OT question. I have a back neighbor that has a huge tree right at the fence line. He's sorta an asshole. Tree is dead as a door nail and about 60 + feet tall. I have this horrible feeling its going to blow over onto my property.

Any ideas how to rectify that? I had to go talk to the guy last weekend bc his sprinklers were shooting through the fence and flooding my yard.

The first item requires the acknowledgement of Objective Truth and the complete and total rejection of Postmodernism and cultural Marxism, specifically any sort of "gender/grievance/racist" studies.

It also should apply Christian religious study and its application in politics here in America. Revulsion towards venison generally comes (in my experience) from improper handling after harvesting.

We have rules about care after shooting, immediately gut the animal, being careful not to damage the anal glands or the ureter, if there's snow, pack the body cavity full to cool it.

We use atv's to get the meat back to a cool room quickly.

No matter who butchers the deer, it is deboned. Takes more time, but worth it, as the bone marrow is very strong and WILL flavor the meat.

No matter who butchers the deer, it is deboned. Takes more time, but worth it, as the bone marrow is very strong and WILL flavor the meat.

I watched this segment with Jordan Peterson, and.... ouch. I get that he's not a Christian, and the idea of taking the world's evil and suffering upon yourself is pretty noble on the surface, but from a Christian perspective? That advice is literally suicidal. The world is dominated by Satan, his ingelligence is matched only by his malevolence, and without Christ your failure is guaranteed.

What's interesting is that Ben Shapiro immediately makes this exact point. Jordan then talks about Brothers Karamazov, and talks about the idea that Christ has set an impossibly crushing example for the rest of the world. Which of course misses the point of him being the son of God that no one can measure up to.

It becomes pretty clear that Jordan Peterson, whatever his other virtues, is badly informed about some basic Christian tenets.

296 I want to go shoot my accidental M14S but I haven't had the chance to go over it for safety and lube it up. I will just take my SLR and a pistol or two.

The other thing I need to do is replace the bipod/grenadelauncher rig on my BM59. I found a BM62 gastube for it that doesn't have the grenade valve and sights so I can lighten up the front end of the rifle by at least half a pound if I don't put the bipod on it.

300 OT question. I have a back neighbor that has a huge tree right at the fence line. He's sorta an asshole. When Dad replaced the fence about 12 years ago, he built it around the tree which is encroaching on this property. Actually on the utility easement. Tree is dead as a door nail and about 60 + feet tall. I have this horrible feeling its going to blow over onto my property.

Any ideas how to rectify that? I had to go talk to the guy last weekend bc his sprinklers were shooting through the fence and flooding my yard.
Posted by: Infidel

I would ensure any communication with him is recorded, do you have his email address? If not, send a letter or leave a note, and ask him to email you about the tree. Tell him your insurance adjuster had a problem with it.

302 Grump, outstanding. That's more or less how I got set up. Approached it from the get-go as a game of reducing costs. Half of my gear was bought used - as you know, most reloading gear properly treated will outlast the owner by decades. Still snipe at local component private sales, when they're "distress priced". For my reloading style (replacing factory ammo at minimum cost), has worked worked out beautifully.

309 135 You should be skeptical of their willingness to fully embrace Trump, because it doesn't exist.

But lesser-of-two-evils vote count just as much as enthusiastic ones. That's true of Bill Kristol sliding left, but also just as true of Dave Rubin sliding right. Given that some these people do in fact have very large audiences, would you rather have them say that they're holding their nose and supporting Trump, or say that they're holding their nose and supporting Buttigeig? They're Bill Clinton center-left types being driven out by the authoritarian left ... should they be welcomed in, or told to stay out?

Churchill was willing to put in a kind word for Satan if it helped him fight Hitler, but some of ya'll aren't winning to stop hating anyone a single notch to your left in order to fight the woke brigades. The problem is, quite a few of them aren't "soldiers" in any real respect. Peterson came up with a really stupid idea for Kavanaugh to resign immediately after being confirmed, and Shapiro thinks he has the gravitas to "criticize" Trump. I can tolerate that, but it's impossible to note the rise of these men without also noticing systematic marginalization and even deplatforming of other, arguably more useful personalities (Alex Jones, Milo, Candace Owens, James Woods, Bounding into Comics). Ben Shapiro seems to think he is a gatekeeper in this regard. Believe him.

Peterson and Rubin both quit Patreon after Sargon of Akkad was deplatformed. That's significant cash money they're walking away from. Joe Rogan has had Alex Jones on, and kinda sorta defended him when nobody else would. Rogan & Tim Pool gave Twitter Jack probably the toughest interview he's ever had. Peterson is no fan of Milo, but he's also pointed out where some of the attacks on him were unfair and dishonest. As a group, they're more invested in sticking up for marginalized voices/against big tech than is, say, most of Fox News.

Shapiro, the conservative, is much the worst of the group on this score. The others, though much more liberal, have no problem saying they disagree with (Milo/Jones/etc), but have an even bigger problem with the bannings and censorship.

I don't think academia will save us, and the battle is removing (political and social) power from them, returning more to Average Joe. But I do think some of the left could see the usefulness of Trump fighting the DeepState (permanent state, shadow government), regardless of their academic argument.

This guy is apparently a YoungTurk, but he has pointed out that Hillary had a Russia/Uranium one problem, so they fabricated the Trump Russia thing out of whole cloth. Old Uncle Joe is as corrupt as Hillary, whereas Trump is an outsider, real world guy. Some of the left may be catching on to that, at least.
