The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"So it turns out that you can get banned from Facebook not only for saying bad things, but for being associated with people who say bad things. Facebook hates Gavin McGinnes, whom they've already banned, so they kicked out Alex Jones because he appeared in a video with him. Milo Yiannopolous got the boot for saying nice things about Tommy Robinson, whom Facebook has designated a 'hate figure'. So if someone says something nice about Alex Jones, will they be banned, too? This is all guilt by association, and my question is, if A appears in a video with B who once caught a ride with C who had lunch with D who once spoke at an auditorium where Milo once gave a speech, will that be enough to get A banned? Seriously, how long can these guilt chains get? And I don't understand so-called conservatives like Ana Navarro applauding this. Does she honestly think they won't eventually come for her? 'Oh no, I'm not a h8r' I can hear her say. But it never seems to enter her pea brain that what constitutes 'hate speech' is going to get redefined, and then we'll see a new wave of bannings, and then redefined again, and again, until everyone who's even a *little* bit to her right has been de-platformed. And then what is she going to do? She is simply too dumb to see the endgame here. She may think there will be safety in running further and further left, but she obviously hasn't read her Solzhenitsyn. He saw that the gulags were full of men who considered themselves good communists and Party members and they kept writing letters to Comrade Stalin telling them that they've been imprisoned by mistake. So, a couple three years from now, someone is going to dig up some of Ana's old tweets or video clips where she expresses some tepidly conservative views, and that will be enough to toss her, kicking and squealing, off the platform. And nobody will defend her, because anyone who could or would defend her will have long been silenced."

"Climate of Hate":

mccain hate speech.jpg
Some variation of the 'climate of hate' trope gets applied by the MSM (and the Democrats)(BIRM) to whichever Republican is most prominent on the national radar. No matter how squishy or not-really-conservative they actually are. Heck, they would even say this about John Kasich if he had run a competent campaign and earned more than 3 or 4 votes.

You Will Never See A Better Example of White Privilege In Action:

Once this clueless white lady is finished fluffing for Maduro, she'll fly back to her comfortable home in the USA where there's plenty of food in all of the grocery stories, good restaurants and all-night coffee shops in every strip mall and supermarket shopping complex, where government thugs aren't murdering people in the street, and her lights stay on all of the time. All of which she takes for granted.

And considering 6 degrees o separation, how easy is it to follow a chain from one undesirable to justify banning another?

Someone like Joe Rogan interviews a variety of people, so find cause to ban him and you can then ban all his podcast visitors (as needed), such as Jordan Peterson, Tim Pool, Ben Shapiro.

And. . .Rogan's interviewed Alex Jones, so they already have cause.

But that isn't the rule they are operating under, one which benefits them tremendously.

The distinction comes down to platform versus publisher. There are significantly different rules and benefits for each Facebook and twitter claim to be platforms but by editing content they are in reality a publisher and should be operating under much different, more restrictive rules.

They are trying to have it both ways. They need to be forced to choose, either operate like a platform and stop censoring speech or by governed as a publisher which is what they are doing.

I would recommending checking out what independent journalist Tim Pool has to say on this. He is an Occupy Wal Street/Bernie supporter, so he is not a rabid conservative. He strives to be as non-partisan, down the middle as he can.

@Timcast

He was on Joe Rogan's podcast when Joe brought back Jack Dorsey and a legal representative from twitter (she filled in a lot of the details Jack was unaware of). It's long, but it's a really informative debate about social media censorship.

Might help clarify the arguments outside of the "your business, your riles" take on this.

Personally, I don't enjoy that sort of thing. If a show or movie is about a bad guy fighting with another (but different kind) of bad guy or bad guys over some MacGuffin, power, money, or whatever, I find a steady diet of that very wearisome to my soul.

On the other hand, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is one of my all-time favorite movies I watch again and again, so there you go.

167 Have to disagree with just about the entire social media rant.

There is no such thing as "hate speech". Every time the phrase is used, it should be some variation or elaboration on that central fact.

The argument is not that idiots like Navarro might some day be banned - it's that all expression (except that advocating violence), including the odious variety, is protected in an open society, the people decide what to listen to, the solution for bad speech is more free speech - and, fill in the rest of the familiar, but correct, cliches.

As a practical matter, quite simple. Either these companies and their platforms are deemed public accommodations/utilities, in which case they abide by govt.-enforced standards of access, or they are publishers, like ace, and get to control their content - but also face lawsuits for it.

Or they're "monopolies" subject to regulation/break-up/change of practices (a sort of hybrid of the other two situations).

These people are idiots as citizens, they are totalitarian in their instinct, mostly racist and ignorant outside narrow tech topics. You're not going to appeal to some American sensibility that's not there. They need to be labeled, demonized, and abused, not "reasoned" with. You're dealing with a North Korean border guard - do you "reason" with him, or shoot him/force him to comply?

200 But that isn't the rule they are operating under, one which benefits them tremendously.

Posted by: JackStraw at May 06, 2019 11:36 AM (/tuJf)

But if they were forced to allow any and all "legal" content on their platform, much of their customers would be chased away if it became rampant with racism, gore, and online harassment.

The core of the issue, as I see it, is that these companies have very wishy washy definitions of what "hate" and other objectionable content and behavior is.... and when the enforcers themselves are overwhelmingly left-wing, then you get selective enforcement.

317 275 My criticism of Libertarianism is similar to my criticism of Leftism, it's rooting in fantasy not reality. They ignore how human behavior works and structures culture.

All I've heard from Scott Lincicome and Ben Shapiro for two years now is how Trump is going to kill the economy with his tariffs, as if our trade agreements were devoid of any tariffs before Trump or every will be. They're selling a fantasy.
Posted by: lowandslow at May 06, 2019 11:57 AM (4thlk)

Well I don't know who the first person is, and I don't listen to Ben Shapiro, but I think what most of us here mean by "libertarian" is the basic idea that we believe in very limited government, and recognize that for us all to survive together somewhat peacefully in society, we need to compromise with each other.

You want gay marriage? Fine. I want guns.
You want legal weed? Fine, I want low taxes.

As Thomas Jefferson said, "if it doesn't break my leg, or pick my pocket, what do I care about what my neighbor does?" (paraphrasing.)

If you want to ban drugs, or dictate private behavior, or whatever... well, the more you want government to do, the bigger government has to be. And that all might be fine and well while your party controls the government, when others control it, you'll quickly find yourself on the receiving end of a lot of policies you don't like.

368 I don't know. Mixed feelings. Ace can ban folks for posting racist
rants. His blog, his rules. If Twitter and Facebook, effectively do the
same thing with MAGA, (Yes, I know MAGA is not racist) it's their
platform, their rules.

It is entirely dependent on the intent of the person(s) running the show. If the intent is to pretend to be a platform open to all but to actually silence and de-platform people with whom they don't agree, that is a conspiracy to oppress their freedom of speech and it is a federal felony. (18 USC 241). This is true if they are claiming an exemption from the libel laws by their common carrier status. In other words if they claim to have no editorial control over what is published - but then conspire to oppress certain opinions - yeah that is a felony. It would be like the phone company not allowing you to talk because they don't like what you are saying.

Ace of Spades is a conservative site, Democratic Underground is a progressive site. Both have a right to censor and ban non compliant posters who run counter to the standards of the site.

But, again, if you want to use government to say what marriage is and what it isn't, then you can't complain when someone else uses those same mechanisms to change the definition on you.

Or, you could just leave it up to churches and individuals to decide and get the government completely out of it.

As for gay cake baking? Again -- in 1964, our elected leaders passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (over the strenuous objections of Barry Goldwater, a libertarian, who completely foresaw what was coming) which said any business in the US open to the public is a "public accommodation" and as such, the federal government could tell who they must serve.

Not really. In the early history of the States, marriages (and births and deaths, for that matter) were recorded by the local churches.

As we moved west, many states said "fuck it" and gave up on even trying to keep track of marriages, thus we get the concept of common law marriage.

The only real interest the State historically had in marriage was in how to divide peoples estates upon death.

480 Think about who this platform was made for. And similarly twitter.

High school kids. Maybe College. Because what do you see when you see zuckerberg?

I see a geek in his senior year. Awkward but smart with lots of ideas of how he's going to "help" the world be a better place.

But it's only a better place for Mark Zuckerberg. And his pals and if you don't fit his definition of pals then he bans you from his presence and his clique shuns you too.

IT'S FREAKING HIGH SCHOOL WRIT LARGE and using the Internet.

It's why most of it is meaningless. Sure some smart people have monetized it as a communications device and for folks to use for THEIR little cliques.

But Marks Clique takes precedence and don't you think he'll abide by ANYBODY making money off it. Particularly those who he thinks are icky or mean.

Which is also why those he doesn't think are mean but maybe downtrodden or who are known to be disadvantaged are given a lot of room to say stuff cause they deserve it.

But not icky conservatives.

Saw a tweet or article whatever about how the GOP has allowed the left to paint them as CRIMINALS and thus nothing they say or do is taken well by those who have accepted this viewpoint or subscribe to the Democrat party.

The GOP and conservatives are always the party poopers even if they aren't. They they're the ones who are mean spirited and hateful while others are just giving vent to justified anger at how they've been treated by you guessed it CONSERVATIVES and the GOP.

So yeah you're gonna get banned if Mark don't like you. It's also why there's no telling who will get banned next because there really aren't any rules it's how someone FEELZ about what was said or the video that was played or whatever.

Just like High School. You can get kicked out of a clique for wearing the wrong clothes or colors or talking to others who have been banned.

I'm no fan of the current marriage / divorce system either, and I would like to see more societal pressure for people (women especially, not to be too controversial here) to easily and readily walk away from marriages / long term relationships / whatever you want to call it.

But that said -- again, this is the logical outcome of putting our government in charge of these institutions.

Government tends to fuck up pretty much every thing it touches, if you hadn't noticed, and apply shitty one-size-fits-all solutions to problems that end up with a lot of unanticipated side effects.

So allowing people out of shitty marriages (an admirable goal) gives us a culture where 50% of marriages end in divorce, and whatever percentage of kids grow up in a house without both of their biological parents living there.

But the impetus of these problems is putting government in charge of more and more of our lives.

Uncomfortable is an understatement.

IIRC, the Mormon practice of polygamy outraged populations, and led to violence. Forcing the Mormons to abandon it was necessary to keep the peace.

Of course, now we have the Muzzies bidding fair to reinstitute it, but that's another issue.

The church was the only record keeper of marriages for many centuries. The entire point of a marriage was to show the community that these two people are having sex which will produce children. The guy is now responsible for feeding and protecting those children he sired and the woman who birthed them. It also served as a signal for other males to not have sex with "his" wife he was supporting and protecting so that he would know the kids were his and not waste his labor on "not his sex product." By making buttsex "marriage" it eradicates the point.

As an example of a useful compound used under tight medical supervision, I give you thalidomide. Thalidomide is basically a wonder drug, useful for all kinds of things. No one knew that it racemized in the body, and that one of the enantiomers is teratogenic.

My point is that there are two separate issues at play -- the way I think people should live their lives, and the power I think government should have to enforce those values.

And when you merge those two ideas in to one, you end up in a situation where the government dictates how people should live their lives, and the government is fickle and responds to the will of the people, so when 51% decide no fault divorce is a good idea, and should encourage people to break up, then that's what happens.

Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at May 06, 2019 12:51 PM (ppBhU)

575 The church was the only record keeper of marriages for many centuries.
Posted by: dagny at May 06, 2019 12:44 PM (nRWPy)

Wow. Well said!

And further to your point about the signal to other males, that promotes social stability. There's a reason why adultery appeared in the Ten Commandments. Adultery, along with murder, theft (coveting other's goods), bearing false witness, etc. undermine social stability and law and order and lead to ... Somalia.

On the eve of its 71st Independence Day, Israel's population stands at 9,021,000, crossing 9 million for the first time, according to figures released on Monday by the Central Bureau of Statistics.

If American Indians decided to take up arms and managed to re-claim some of our states for themselves, or if native Mexicans took up arms and re-claimed AZ and CA and NM for themselves (beyond what they've already done to displace us there), or if aboriginies took up arms and re-claimed part of Australia, the left would be wildly cheering them on and saying that the natives had every right to re-claim their ancestral lands for themselves, since the lands were "stolen" from them by later arrivals.

Yet when the Jews re-claimed Israel in 1948, the land which they originally settled and where they had lived for thousands of years, this victory was greeted with outrage and condemnation from the left, which continues to this day to support the much-later-arriving Arab "Palestinians" and their claim to the land.

Apparently, lands belong to the people who originally settled on them and lived there, unless those people happen to be Jews.

As Joe pointed out, the problem the Democrat Party has now is that it includes raving lunatics on the left who will go ape-shit if the nominee is also a raving lunatic. (Think Chicago 1968 at the next Democrat convention.) The raving lunatics aren't a majority in the party, but they're extremely loud and high profile, and prone to violence (e.g., antifa). Keeping them onside and nominating someone who can win the general election is going to be a tough needle to thread.

--------------------------
They expressly banned the federal government from DISestablishment, too.
The prohibition is against Congress making any law "respecting the establishment of religion," whether for or against.

The states with established churches did not want VA/PA imposing their own views on them any more than VA/PA wanted Massachusetts calling the shots nationally.

Likewise, the prohibition of a "religious test" only applied to the federal government. Thus Congress could not bar, say, a Catholic elected in MD or a Baptist elected in RI from being seated. But states and localities could (and did) have religious qualifications.

What the mid-20th-century Court did was turn this around 180 degrees. We now have a federal establishment.

629 >>> Right. People were uncomfortable with polygamy, and, IIRC, one of the prerequisites for Utah being allowed to become a state was for them to ban it. (you know, back when the federal government knew it couldn't directly do anything about marriage.)
Uncomfortable is an understatement.
IIRC, the Mormon practice of polygamy outraged populations, and led to violence. Forcing the Mormons to abandon it was necessary to keep the peace.

I know, dead thread, but I was in a meeting. Search for the Edmunds-Tucker Act of 1887. Stripped their judicial, property, and constitutional rights away due to certain religious practices. Anyone who doesn't think the soulless left wants to enforce a new version of this on modern Christians is not paying attention.

Also, many other things besides polygamy led to ppl being violent against Mormons at that time. The church under Smith was a pretty abolitionist church for the era. That does not lead to friendly white democrat neighbors in a slave state like Missouri. Which is why they were butchered, raped and their lands ransacked, leading them to leave Missouri for Illinois.

Peace for whom? It is a tricky subject in the eye of the beholder, and a slippery slope. Look the second amendment and wanting to disarm Americans in the name of "peace" as a good example.
