Report on the Status of NeverTrump: Sad!

David Azerrad, writing for the LA Times:

The conservative case against Trump was strongest during the 2016 Republican primary, when there were many qualified candidates to choose from. Once Trump became the Republican nominee, however, the reasonable conservative case against Trump became the indefensible NeverTrump case for Hillary Clinton.

Our presidential elections are, for better or for worse, binary propositions. The known unknowns of a Trump presidency should have been preferable for conservatives to the known knowns of a Clinton presidency. Still, there was no way to fully refute the apocalyptic predictions NeverTrumpers made during the 2016 race, however implausible or silly they were.

Now, 2½ years into the Trump presidency, the case for NeverTrumpism has completely collapsed. Not one of the overblown doomsday scenarios that President Trump was supposed to unleash on humanity has panned out. The economy hasn't collapsed. Fascism hasn’t come to America. And we aren't at war with the world.

The president, in fact, has an impressive record of conservative accomplishments. Admittedly, it is easy to lose sight of them amid the flurry of tweets, the high turnover rate in the administration and the daily skirmishes with journalists. But Trump has cut taxes, pursued an aggressive deregulatory agenda, boosted the defense budget and appointed two fine justices to the Supreme Court as well as a record number of appellate judges to the federal bench.

The New York Times also reports on the Last of the True Conservatives-- you know, the ones embracing racial reparations.

The die-hard remnant population of Never Trumpers comes most visibly from the class of Republican consultants, conservative media personalities and a few G.O.P. officeholders safely removed from the considerations of re-election campaigns.

And, it could be also be said: those who can raise money from liberals to attack conservatives, which office-holders can't easily do.

...
There is also money to be made:

[Rick] Wilson's anti-Trump manifesto, "Everything Trump Touches Dies," became an instant No. 1 New York Times best seller in 2018, and he is now a constant cable-TV presence. He has another book on the way, lucrative speaking gigs coming in and magazine assignments -- though he says it has not offset the $4.5 million in income he estimates he has lost in recent years from would-be clients.

...

Kristol belongs to the category of affable gasbag that Trump marginalized as a relic of whatever nonpopulist establishment still exists inside the G.O.P.: He was the chief of staff to Vice President Dan Quayle, a loud and influential champion of invading Iraq (which he predicted on C-SPAN would be a "two-month war, not an eight-year war") and someone who has probably picked over as many greenroom fruit plates as anyone in Washington.

In the early days of the new administration, Kristol and other shellshocked conservatives around Washington started getting together to commiserate. One of the more regular meetings took place every other Tuesday morning, hosted by the Niskanen Center, a new libertarian think tank started by alumni of the Cato Institute. Hosted by Niskanen’s co-founder, Jerry Taylor, the meetings -- which participants called "the Meeting of the Concerned" --'were held in a conference room in the basement of the CNN building near Union Station.

The gatherings attracted a roster of right-of-center familiars: the columnists Mona Charen, David Frum and Jennifer Rubin; the former Oklahoma representative Mickey Edwards; and onetime Republican administration officials like Linda Chavez. They were invitation-only and off the record. Guest speakers were brought in, along with bagels. "There was a lot of discussion around what exactly is going on in the Republican Party," recalled Sarah Longwell, a D.C. trade association, think tank and advocacy veteran who was a semiregular attendee. "We were trying to figure out whether Trump was a symptom or cause."

As I was told by a frequent attendee of the "Meeting of the Concerned:" Every meeting consists of them asking "What happened?" without ever reaching an answer or any kind of closure.

3 Hm... This keeps getting bandied about by all and sundry, but *is* Trump's turnover rate abnormally high?

I mean, sure, the coverage of any staff changes he makes is much higher than any previous president, but numerically, is this statement justified?

And if so...

is it relevant?

154 One thing neither article mentions much is how the NeverTrumpers, in the purity of their True Conservative Principles are constantly turning to guys like Weld, Hogan, and Kasich.

I get Sasse and Lee, up to a point. they do have conservative voting records, in general. And I even get a different sense in which Weld and Hogan can be "acceptable" as the best we can get in their states. But back in the day, no one who called himself a conservative said that made Rockefeller one of us. At most, they'd plump for someone like Ford.

One point they DO make is that, before he took office, no one could disprove the "Trump's playing you; he's no conservative; he'll govern as a liberal."
Well, now we have to say that, if Trump is a stealth liberal, he's done a remarkably good job of keeping that from influencing his policies. (OK, there are a few things to wonder at, like weaker sentencing, but they are no more - at worst - than what the Bushes did.)

155 I've watched a few different seasons of it, and really enjoyed Celebrity Apprentice.

________________

That was another reason for voting against Hillary: she'd never competently run anything in her life. She was a crooked and incompetent Arkansas lawyer (she didn't sneak into the Rose Law Firm in the dead of night to steal her own billing records because they reflected her competence), she was a crooked and incompetent First Lady (health care hearings fiasco, travel office firings, etc.), and she was a crooked and incompetent Secretary of State ($6 billion of the State Dept. budget unaccounted for, Benghazi, the illegal e-mail server, etc.).

At least Trump had run businesses successfully and made money, which was a lot more than Hillary could say for herself. And NYC real estate and NJ casinos are tough arenas to be successful in; the unions, the mob, the crooked politicians, the ludicrous maze of regulations. It takes some skill and savvy to negotiate through those shark-infested waters, and the fact that Trump was able to do it with the success he did was no small thing -- especially when contrasted with Hillary Clinton's record of ineptitude and failure.

Zombie, I'm trouble understanding what you're talking about. Consider the unit sphere, a sphere with a radius of 1 unit.

The surface area of that sphere is 4pi square units. The volume enclosed by that sphere is 4/3 *pi cubic units.

I thought you were asking the radio of that surface area to the area of circle formed by bisecting it with a plane. That ratio is simply 4.

The surface area of a sphere is exactly 4 times the area enclosed by a circle of the same radius.

I thought you were asking the radio of that surface area to the area of circle formed by bisecting it with a plane. That ratio is simply 4.

The surface area of a sphere is exactly 4 times the area enclosed by a circle of the same radius.

and when you think about it - 4 is just 2 squared! And 2 is 1 plus 1! WHOOOOAAHHHHHHH DUUUDDE!!!!

The surface area of that sphere is 4pi square units. The volume enclosed by that sphere is 4/3 *pi cubic units.

I thought you were asking the radio of that surface area to the area of circle formed by bisecting it with a plane. That ratio is simply 4.

Posted by: publius

Bingo, yes, exactly -- " the radio of that surface area to the area of circle formed by bisecting it with a plane. That ratio is simply 4. "

By why would the ratio in 1st/2nd dimensions be 3.1414..., but the ratio in 2nd/3rd dimensions be 4.000? And what then is the ratio in 3rd/4th dimensions? (I.e. the ratio of the surface of a sphere of diameter 1 to the surface of its 4D hypersphere of diameter 1?) And so on to higher dimension? Does the value always change, adn does it always increase, or always decrease, or stay the same, or what?

290 If these people had any self-control, they'd realize Trump has reverted to basic normiecon garbage, and completely dismissed serving the populism that got him elected. They should fully support New Trump.

Trump has gone from the implicit white people's candidate to the guy who names everyone's interests but whites, by name. Gone is the guy who wanted to end the stupid Middle East Wars and not start any new ones. Gone is the guy who wasn't married to the self-destructive "muh lower spending" politics that prevented whites from having any stake in the social safety nets. Now Trump is just another GOP politician ready to screw over whites as long as it marginally improves GDP or government spending.

Trump never understood why he was elected, and he never put in place any successors to what was Trumpism. Now when Trump is gone it'll be back to business as usual in the GOP: pander to everyone but the whites who vote for them and get cheap labor for the Chamber of Commerce.

Bill Kristol should co-opt the New Trump. But certain Special People just can't help themselves.

You're not generalizing this up the dimensional chain correctly. IOW, the ratio of circumference to area of a circle doesn't generalize to the surface area of a sphere to the area of the circle.

Pi has to do with the curvature. Both the area of the sphere and the circle have the curvy factor of pi in them, so it makes sense their ratio is rational.

Now, if you take the surface area of the sphere and compare it to something flat, like that of the unit cube, then you'll always have pi in that ratio.

381 301 >> By why would the ratio in 1st/2nd dimensions be 3.1414..., but the ratio in 2nd/3rd dimensions be 4.000?

You're not generalizing this up the dimensional chain correctly. IOW, the ratio of circumference to area of a circle doesn't generalize to the surface area of a sphere to the area of the circle.

Pi has to do with the curvature. Both the area of the sphere and the circle have the curvy factor of pi in them, so it makes sense their ratio is rational.

Now, if you take the surface area of the sphere and compare it to something flat, like that of the unit cube, then you'll always have pi in that ratio.
Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear

Hmmmm.

Say you have a point -- a singularity.

The you place two points each exactly one-half unit away from that point on exact opposite sides.

Now, in ONE dimension, the "length" of the thing that connects those two points with the singularity in the center is defined as "1". But in TWO dimensions, the "length" of the things that connects those two points but always stays a half-unit from the singularity is defined as "pi" - -i.e. 3.1414...etc. Actually, it's 3.1414/1.

So the ratio is comparing the length of something in 1 dimension to the length of something in two dimensions.

Moving up a step, if you now have that circle (previously mentioned in the 1st/2nd ratio), and "around" it you have the 3D sphere that also connects the two dots but stays a half-unit away from the singularity, the ratio is 4pi/1pi, or 4.000.

So in this case the ratio is comparing the surface of something in 2 dimensions to the surface of something in three dimensions.

And so on up the scale.

Right around now, my brain is starting to hurt.

410 141 Serious question:

If "pi" is the ratio of a circle's diameter to its circumference, then what is the ratio of a surface-plane that bisects a sphere to the overall external area of that sphere (i..e the three-dimensional version of pi)? What is the numerical constant of this ratio and what is its name? Or is it also the same value (and name) as "pi"?
Posted by: zombie at April 24, 2019 08:18 PM (5tb4C)

An area to area ratio? A circumference to area ratio? You did not specify which aspect of the circle you meant.

The surface area of a sphere is 4*pi*r^2. Either way, circle circumference or circle area, pi will cancel out of the ratio.

Zombie, some of your baby steps here involve the notion of generalizing the concept of circle or sphere to arbitrary dimensions.

The best definition to use is "the locus of points equidistant to some given point, which we'll call the center".

In 2D that's a circle. In 3D, it's a sphere. In 1D, it's simply 2 points. In 4D, it's the hypersphere.

Now, you try to define the general "volume". In 2D, that's the area enclosed by the circle, in 3D, it's the volume enclosed.

In 1D, that "volume" is simply the distance between those two points, 2*r.

OK, now we're getting somewhere! Thanks for clarifying.

We can't do the calculations I seek in 1st/2nd dimension, because one of the measurements is NOT (as I had mistakenly assumed) a "line" of unit 1, but instead two singularity points of unit 0 each. And 0+0=0. And pi/0 is meaningless/infinity.

So, let's just skip that step, and START with 2nd/3rd dimensions, where the answer is "4."

The "locus of points equidistant to some given point, which we'll call the center" in 3D / "locus of points equidistant to some given point, which we'll call the center" in 2D = 4.000.

So: What is "locus of points equidistant to some given point, which we'll call the center" in 4D / "locus of points equidistant to some given point, which we'll call the center" in 3D"?????

Ms. McCord at the podium was the original pic that was placed w her story or a pic of the State Dept building. 504 Question for the Horde - Is Dork a synonym for Nerd?
Posted by: ALH at A

you know, if you go back, dork is a synonym for dick.

my younger sisters were in the habit of using the word dork all the time, thinking it meant geek or loser like everyone else did. however, my father grew up with the word meaning "dick."

Some weekend morning at breakfast when my sisters were slinging the word dork around, including telling my dad not to be a dork, my dad decided to set them straight.

he said very sternly, "girls, you should not be using that word, it means something other than what you think it means." then there were some "nuh uhs" and "everyone uses its" until dad said, "girls, the word means penis."

silence. except the sound of bacon sizzling and french toast frying. then about 10 seconds later my youngest sisters mumbles under her breath, "dad is being such a dork."

laughter, giggling, retreat.

the word henceforth meant geek / loser in our household.

We're talking apples to oranges here. :-) They both happen to have units of 2D area (square distance), but other than that, that's sort of ill defined.

OK, with your help, we're homing in on a definition, and thus the answer.

I want to compare the same units of measurement to the same units of measurement.

Are units measuring the "surface" of some subset of the 2D plane the same units as the "surface" of a 3D sphere? I had always assumed the answer was "yes" -- surface is surface, and it can be measured whether it is curved or not - -and those measurements can then be compared to other "surface" measurements.

So my question then becomes, "What is the ratio of the the surface area swept by the locus of points equidistant to the center in 4D, to the surface area swept by the locus of points equidistant to the center in 3D"?

Zombie, if you're interested in this, you're going to have to start studying. There's a lot of steps between where you are and where you want to be. And that takes some learnin'.

NOOOOOooooo! I hate learnin'. I just want to ask questions and get the answers! Then draw conclusions! Learnin' is too much work.

559 552 So, the ratio of the surface area of an (n-1) sphere to n-sphere (where the two endpoints of the unit line is a 0-sphere and a regular sphere is a 2-sphere), is as follows (per wiki):

((2pi to the (n/2) power / gamma(n/2)) / ((2pi to the ((n+1)/2)) power /gamma((n+1)/2)), where "gamma" is the Euler gamma function.

So, you do the math.

NOOOOOOOooooo! That's too complicated.

But that brings up a more important question: Why did Houston name their football team after a Swiss mathematician???

562 SUCK IT, Patterico.

The excerpt describes that guy perfectly. Enjoy seeing him wallow in his dwindling readership, acting like the MSM, pawning off news positive to Trump on to his workers, and chiming in only for snark.

He actually believes the Mueller report found obstruction.

HA!

563 The surface area of a sphere is 4*pi*r^2. The area
enclosed by that sphere over a bisecting plane would simple be pi*r^2.
The ratio of those areas would then be exactly 4.
