My husband was listening to the news on his phone this morning and I heard a report about a severe labor shortage and a short quote from someone saying that they're offering to hire homeless people and will help them with the process of applying.
Anti-Trump spin? The labor shortage would provide a "challenge" to Trump because of his anti-immigration policies. Here they were just talking about getting homeless people off the streets, which isn't an easy thing to do. Setting aside people who are mentally ill and drug addicts that are far gone, there's a certain amount of quite young people who ended up there during the Obama years and maybe could manage a job if they could get past the fact they've got no home address or shower. But it will prove to be a "challenge" for Trump because we don't have enough people already in the US who might look for work if they thought they could. Trump actually could have been governor of NY, if he had run.
I once listened to a fascinating radio interview with a guy who was on Trump's exploratory committee. Back then, long before his POTUS run and all the associated baggage, he was polling around 40% in the boroughs and would have absolutely cleaned up upstate, easily giving him the win In the end he didn't want to do it. A Repub governor in a solid blue state he felt he would be mostly a figurehead (he's right, see: Pataki, G.) and wouldn't be able to get stuff done. And Trump likes to get stuff done, bigly. DNR (Wa state) decided to remove the last two piers at our place on the river. They left these in when we had to remove the dock. Now, they have decided that these piers that have been in the water since the 70s must be leaking creosote into the river. We're going to have to go back to court if they try to charge us, since they could have removed them when they had the equipment out here. 1. Governors (Current or former) 2. Veeps 3. Senators 4. Generals (one could argue that Trump as a Captain of Industry could fit here) I think we've had as may captains of industry become president as generals (Grant/Eisenhower vs Hoover/Trump) We have only had three sitting senators become president (Harding, Kennedy, and Obama). Sixteen total former senators have become president but they had other jobs as well like governor in between so that muddies things up a bit. 14 vice presidents have become president but of those Arthur, Roosevelt, Truman, and Johnson took office because of the death of the president so they don't really count. Anyway, I am just looking at recent history: Current or former Governors become President often, Veeps sometimes, Senators, Generals occasionally, with Trump being a really unique individual.
What scares the bien pensants is the idea that Anyone Can Do This Shit, might catch on, you don't have to be a 'made man' politician. The closest to Trump in the past hundred-plus years was Hoover, but even there Heebert had had a bunch more involvement in the government-political space than Trump. But Reagan had already been CA governor and active in GOP politics for two decades, he wasn't an 'internal upstart'.
He ran a primary challenge to incumbent Gerald Ford. Do you think the GOPe was happy with that? Posted by: Captain Hate at April 24, 2019 02:38 PM (y7DUB) 448

Posted by: Captain Hate at April 24, 2019 02:38 PM (y7DUB) Obviously not. Nonetheless, Uncle Ron was NOT a complete outsider in the way Trump is. I am reminded of how the Leftist snivelers used to scoff that Uncle Ron was an actor, never minding that between that and President he was also a Union Boss, Real Estate Developer, Republican Party Chairman, and Governor. WisRich: "Okay, so this is going to sound crazy....how about Lindsey Graham 2.0."
I don't trust him. At all. I think he'll always revert to type which is to say multi-nationalist, interventionist, big-gov native that will pander as necessary to win elections and then do everything I generally loathe. Posted by: AnonyBotymousDrivel at April 24, 2019 02:44 PM (6eEQ+) THIS. "We're going to tell the bigots (meaning you and I concerned about the border mess) to shut up...." still infuriates me. Like pundit Hugh Hewitt, who did much the same to us sounding the alarm about illegal aliens back in 1994, I think Lindsey is not fully trustworthy. Posted by: garrett at April 24, 2019 01:43 PM (gou/W) Yes. This bullshit poisons many areas of foreign and domestic policy Trump wants to change. That's why it enrages me that theres not more overt support by Republicans of what he has accomplished and their firm commitment to his agenda. There on br another Trump and the Dems have to be crushed before his terms are over. RE: "Jobless rate lowest since Sept. '69":
September 1969, eh?... let's PONDER that date. Nixon had been in office for about 9 months, & 500000 "workers" were "employed full time" in Viet Nam! So Trump's policies have created near full employment, something not seen since the nation was at war. Posted by: mnw at April 24, 2019 03:25 PM (Cssks) 462
I submit that the Chinese are NOT dragging their feet on the trade agreement at all. Where's the evidence for that?
Multiple sources (WSJ; CNBC) say the treaty is expected to be signed in late May or mid-June. The Chinese invented the abacus, remember? They can count real good, & they know that impeachment is a mirage, with a GOP majority in the Senate. Posted by: mnw at April 24, 2019 03:33 PM (Cssks) 463
