We went to a few pounds recently to find a dog for the family. I'd wager a paycheck 80% of the dogs are pit bulls and mixes. It's tragic. Gone are the days of going and finding a sweet little mutt.
We ended up checking out the bulletin boards at vet offices instead. Lots of free to good home dogs there.

I've seen pit bulls in action, and there is NO WAY I'd ever have one. One was running loose, and a neighbor and I corraled it and put a leash on it while we looked for its owner. The dog was perfectly fine ... until he saw another neighbor walking his dog on a leash.
Then the pit bull instantly went from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde, lungeing at the other dog, straining at the leash, snarling viciously. I weigh 180 lbs, and I had to brace myself and struggle to hold the damned dog back, because he clearly meant business.
Thank God we had a leash on the pit bull before he saw the other dog.
Then there's the time two pit bulls attacked our golden retriever ... so yeah, fuck pit bulls.

One is, it's a way to control white people. Just like we've been told we cannot say certain words or wear red caps, this is the spreading of that attempt at greater control. Three, it's interfering with our culture of having animals as companions. In muslim countries, animals are raped and mistreated; little children are taught to kill by practicing with animals to get used to the blood and gore. They want to take away something precious to us as a show of supremacy.
There will prob be laughing, ridiculing replies to this piece and that's good, but we need to take it seriously, as well. No, privileged people are not permitted to tell us whether or not we can have animals - does not matter if they're muslim, leftists, blacks, whatever.
They want to stigmatize yet another common behavior -- but only for white people. They will continue to pick things out and attempt to deny them to us as a show of power. We must not agree to this.
PS. Think it's paranoid? Look how "accepting" gays overturned the meaning of marriage and led to the cult of the transgender, completely beating a rival victim, women, by taking over their sports and invading their bathrooms and dressing rooms. Now they're normalizing it for our children.

I remember talking to someone a decade ago who told me the family pit bull ate the 3 year old grandson's head in front of the family. Just snapped and attacked the kid. Had known the child since birth and had always been so gentle, she said.

the dog was already scarred mentally, and had no sense of pack loyalty. Even though your heart was in the right place, you never had a chance, Ben.
This is why I only would get a young puppy, and spent as much time each day and night as possible with it, to imprint who their new pack was.
It always worked for me, but then again, I never wanted a pit bull. Labs, setters, German shepherds.
A dog is a member of the family first, and follows the family rules. Teach that and be consistent, and start with them as a puppy.
For the rest of their lives, they will be loyal to you and your family.

People seem to want to ignore breeding but aggression and instinct is deliberately bred into some animals for a hundred generations or more to get a certain outcome and no amount of lovey dovey treatment makes that vanish.

I have a German Shepherd. If you want a dog that basically raises itself and is calm and good natured, get a Golden Retriever or an Irish Setter. German Shepherds require a lot of attention and a lot of disciplined behavior from you. Once they've been trained well, they're great dogs. But, if you don't want a job for 2 or 3 years in raising a dog, a German Shepherd is not the way to go.

The operative question is what a dog is bred for. Most dogs hate getting wet. Retrievers love swimming dearly. Over many generations they were selected for the behavior, which now is intrinsic to them.
Watching a German shepherd (just one; I'm not necessarily generalizing here) perk up alert and excited watching toddlers run around shrieking gave me the creeps.

Yep. I've owned German Shepherds my whole life. Own one right now. Trained properly, you will never have a more loyal and loving companion. They're even known to be very clownish and get a kick out of making you laugh. But they require tons of training and a consistent sense of discipline. Especially the first couple of years. But to me, its worth it. They're that wonderful when trained properly.

But then again, I don't small children anymore, either. And in light of what I commented above, I would worry about that.
The golden retriever my sons grew up with was huge: 120 lbs., and stood almost hip high. (He could put his paws on my shoulders, and I'm over six feet tall.)
But he was a gentle giant who would start wagging furiously when he saw a child 100 yards off. Everybody was his pal. Our sons, each in his turn, used to jump on his back and play "horsey." He put up with it until he'd had enough, then get up and they'd fall off. They pulled his ears, and poked at his eyes, and his only response was to raise his head out of their reach.
The only time I saw any aggression out of him was when the asshole dog of some asshole owner decided to go after me. Big mistake. Shit was on, big time, to the cost of the asshole dog.

Well sure, because a Golden Retriever was bred for like 500 years to be super gentle and kind and really great at spotting, tracking, and finding prey. Its a question of breeding. Some still go wrong, of course, but the general dog will be sweet as cotton candy to everyone.
If you breed a dog for certain characteristics generation after generation, taking two dogs with the characteristics you want and breeding them, eliminating the ones you don't care about and only keeping and breeding the ones behaving and built like you want, you'll get exactly what you need in a while. Your kids and grand kids can keep it up and eventually you get a poodle or a grayhound... or a corgi. But you can also get a dog built for immense strength that is super aggressive and fights to kill.

I let my Goldens play with anyone's kids. Used to bring my last one to visit my dad when he was in the nursing home. He met everyone. Every. One.
I've had dogs all my life. Lots of them. Never had a bad dog. I know they exist, I've seen them and they do come in all shapes and sizes, but not my dogs.
Biggest danger anyone has around my dogs is getting licked to death. If you raise your dogs right they aren't going to just magically snap.

Have to disagree. Being attentive and eager to please, they're easy to teach, which suggests they're pretty bright.
We had an invisible fence (wire in the ground that zapped the pup when he crossed it; we couldn't have a physical fence). The trainer came out, and said, "Goldens are easy to train." He put flags out, and led him into the fence. Once. The trainer picked up the flags and left.
The pup never crossed that line again.

my point is, first, that there is no standard pit bull breed. there are studies that demonstrate that dog experts have no ability to reliably identify pit bulls. even worse, the standards for pit bulls vary from region to region. this does not happen with german shephards or dobermans.
second, because there is no reliable standard, there is no reliable assignment of bites to pitbulls, so there is no reason to think that they are more dangerous.
they are not contradictory and are indeed base upon information, not the voodoo, hoodoo, and all kinds or weird shit that has been offered here.

Our Standard Poodle is awesome and huge. Her father was a party poodle (multicolored fur) and nearly as large as a great dane, no kidding. She's sweet as can be and smartest dog I've ever owned short of the herding breeds like border collies and aussie shepards.
And she's got second most personality of any dog I've ever owned. I'd always want to have to have a poodle around and will definitely replace her with one of her breed when she's gone.

When I was young, my folks had a mutt that they got for like $5 from a pet store and the first of what would turn out to be a lot of Goldens. We got the Golden from a friend of my parents who trained them for field trials.
This guy was a champion many times over and now retired. He loved me and my sister because we loved him and the owner was all about the sport, not the pet. So he gave him to us.
You could tell this dog to lie down and even if he was 50 yards from you and running flat out he would drop like he was shot and not move until you released him.
The mutt used to open the gate on the fence, pull the gate open and hold it until the Golden finally figured out he was free. Then the mutt would leave and close the gate behind her.
Smartest dog I've ever seen was a $5 mutt.

That works for all dogs, as long as they are not adult and can withstand the shock. Just move slow, so they register what is happening before they got shocked. They need to register the shock with their location and direction.
I have seen adult dogs that know they are going to get shocked, so they get a running start to minimize the shock as they bust out. The invisible fence doesn't work often for adult dogs.
We can agree to disagree, Jay. I have heard many stories from the above 3 mentioned about their dogs doing extra-dumb things. But I do like Goldens a lot, as long as they are shedding in someone else's home instead of mine.

I could tell it to go find my daughter one time, and she would start looking for her, then bark once when she found her. She would then shepherd my daughter to where we were.

Goldens are very bright and very easy to train. If they were dumb, you wouldn't see so many trained as Therapy Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs, Seeing Eye Dogs, etc.
My youngest Golden was just over three months old when he learned how to open the door (lever handle.) Replaced the front and back door handles with knobs, and he figured out how to open them as well (and no, he doesn't have thumbs.) I've got it on video. Now I've got those plastic child-proof covers on the knobs and so far, so good. Wicked smart.

Big, white dog. Friendly as all get out,,, to me. Always greets me and leans up against me when I'm walking to the house so I can scratch his head and neck.
Roams the 40 acres and keeps the coyotes out too.
So if I ever get my place together enough,,, a beagle,, a pointing lab,, and a Huck.

That was what the shelter lady said when I went to get Ajax. He was a working line. Evidently a farmer had grandkids. They wanted puppies so he bred his two Red Heelers. He got 5 puppies. Oops.
While I was looking at Ajax- and this shelter was odd, he was in a crate with one of his male litter mates and they were playing away happily. The female from the litter was in a cage by herself, two crates over, just howling her little heart out. I would have taken her too, but the shelter lady said that a family wanted to take a look at her because their son was allergic to dogs, but was not allergic to Heelers.
Probably for the best, Ajax at 1.5 years old was about all I could handle- two of them might have driven me around the bend.

Blacks are enormously overrepresented in federal jobs. I think partly that's due to the large black population in DC and partly on purpose because it makes it easy to cry racism if you cut any agency back.
Cats have a huge range of personality, but they tend to only show it when they feel safe. If you don't like cats or aren't around them much, they won't usually like you and will stay away. I've had a good dozen cats around in my life over the years and every one was specifically different.
Cats amaze me with how many sounds they can make as well, apparently they are able to vocalize with like twice as many sounds as a dog. You only think of the straight meow but they can do a zillion different little tones and sounds. And they can be super affectionate as well, with someone they like.
But the stereotypes are more fun

Curious to know what behaviors you observed.
I had a German Shepherd once and when my sister would visit from Germany with her first born who was about...I don't know, but she was walking...one and a half? Anyway, she'd run around and Kaiser would keep her...well, shepherded I suppose. If we were all in the living room and she's going here and there he'd kinda block her off doing this little nipping motion at her feet to keep her near. It was interesting to see.
Of course at the end of the day he'd be exhausted and sleep like a rock. He didn't care so much in future visits cuz she was older and so was he and his typical old man response was, "Fuck it."

Huck isn't real shaggy but his coat is pretty dense.
He's a great dog and loves uncle "teej" who get in the grass and wrassels with him.
Hell, I know the code to get in if no one's home and he doesn't even flinch.
