A Plurality of Americans Accept that the FBI "Spied" on Trump

Despite the media's shrieking that spying is not spying when Democrat partisans do it, only 28% of the public say there was no spying.

So that's good.

But here's a worse way to put it: Only 38% of Americans agree that reality is real.

Thirty-eight percent of respondents said they believe the Trump campaign was spied on, compared with 28 percent who said they don't believe the president's campaign was spied on. More than a third, 35 percent, said they don’t know or have no opinion about it.

Politico asserts there is "no evidence" for spying... except, of course, for the acknowledged spying.

While there's no evidence that officials spied on the Trump campaign, the attorney general’s comments still made it into a majority of voters' news consumption.

And hark, what news is this?

Election Day is still a long way off. But Trump’s current Gallup approval rating (45 percent) is higher than Barack Obama’s was in April of his third year (44 percent) and only a hair below Bill Clinton's (48 percent). At least for now, Trump's go-it-alone strategy looks perfectly viable.

36 Read Victor Davis Hanson's great (and depressing) Article today, together with other articles of similar bent of late, and I have to say...

Not sure if there are documented stages of realization and reality on this front, but I find that my personal shock about the abhorrent behavior, rhetoric and philosophy of the Democrat party and Progressive activists, and resulting hate of all of them and what they stand for, hasn't plumbed the bottom.

Yes, there is the fear about where this Country is heading, how I'm going to be able to influence and teach my kids the values I was raised on in the face of the equal vicious, unintelligent, false and destructive messaging of the progressives. But more and more, I am convinced that the political schism in this Country isn't going to heal, there isn't a political figure alive that will "bring us together," or one on the Left that will tamp down their clear -- unequivocal -- desire for power by physical force.

We're heading for blood in the streets. I don't think there is a question of if, only when. We're in the midst of a civil war. It's quite clear. Like all hot wars, we're standing in a flooded field of gasoline, and it only takes a spark.

I don't want violence -- won't be the one to start or instigate it -- but over the last few years I've done some self defense prep, with low-probability assessment of having to use it (and prepped with that in mind). I'm revising my outlook. I think it's now highly probable, and I'm going to prep accordingly. I think violence is coming. And it will happen quickly. Sad, sad, sad. But just saying.

This new standard is insane, but I think it about sums it up. If prosecutors were held to such a standard of evidence before leveling charges, the dockets would empty toot sweet.

91 Probably because anyone that says out loud they believe a "conspiracy theory" narrative that "helps" Trump are browbeat as lunatics.

As far as Trump's approval ratings, it is so ironic that it's higher than Obama's. All we were told over and over was that Obama was super popular and beloved. So I guess Trump is this generation's Ronald Reagan.

To me 2020 is looking like 1972, but there I go getting cocky again.

106 Here's my "what if?" on the whole spying thing:

What if TGE, right after being enthroned, had his boy Sessions use information supplied by Adm. Mike Rogers to obtain a PROPERLY PREDICATED warrant to conduct legal surveillance on ALL of the Spygate conspirators, which included A. Weismann, R. Mueller, Brennan, etc. etc. etc., and this warrant was obtained PRIOR to Mueller being appointed Special Counsel.

And that after Sessions got what he needed, he stepped down, Barr was put in his place, and Barr went to Mueller and said: "Look, dude, I've got you by the balls. Let's end this before we have to start doing 6 a.m. no knock raids. What do you say?"

Media Matters: Trump lies AGAIN!

Amanda Marcotte: Trump's tweet about fossil fuel production shows that he's only interested in a male-dominated oil and gas industry, and refuses to recognize the contributions of women in STEM.

190 Frankly, don't know how ANY of us can have a truly informed opinion on the Russia collusion crap. The FBI and DOJ, and their Democrat allied elected officials, interest groups and media companies/personalities, have struggled mightily to cover up all of the FACTS about Russian Collusion in favor of innuendo and narrative.

Even after tomorrow, even after the Muller reports comes out to show that Trump once cut a label of a mattress and didn't file on time a building permit in 1978, keep in mind that the public STILL doesn't know the KEY facts from 2016-19:

(1) WHO did the government surveil from the Trump campaign? Carter P. & George P. were the low-level entry points, but with authorized 3-step surveillance, we all KNOW that the surveillance went well beyond them. Will we ever know? Not without an Act of God, apparently. Because, sources, methods, and integrity of FBI.

(2) WHAT surveillance techniques were used? We know HUMINT. We know past & current email, txt messages. We may presume phone calls, directional mics, etc. We know unmasking. But we don't know how much. We don't know what else.

(3) WHEN did the surveillance occur? We know July 2016 is the "official" story line. But too much of publicly available evidence points to earlier surveillance and investigation steps. (of WHO, and by WHAT means?)

(4) WHAT was the justification? We don't know. The only one we DO know is the Steele Dossier, which has now been conclusively debunked by Mueller.

(5) WHO participated? Did the CIA? Who in the Obama Admin was involved? Who was the 3rd party contractor called out in the FISA abuse investigation during the key period in 2016-2017 that had access to the raw FISA-sourced intelligence data?

Folks, we only know the slightest kernel of the top layer of the story. How can the "public" legitimately form an intelligent opinion on such a corrupt and sordid affair?

Our government failed here so spectacularly, so enormously, so comprehensively, that nothing short of saying F--K IT to the "sources and methods" and so-called "national security" and going full transparency and then, as warranted, full prosecution of all involved to the highest chargeable offense, has a chance of bringing this Country back from the abyss we find ourselves in here.

If the USA dissolves, mark your calendar to 2016, c/o Barack Hussein Obama and Hillary Clinton. What a waste.

Here's the thing: the more they do this kind of crap, the further they damage what little credibility they have left.

It's like reflexively defending Muslims, and deprecating any suggestion that they might have been involved in some outrage. Many people - maybe most people - take that as confirmation that the Muslims WERE involved, since the MSM are pretty reliable anti-authorities.

Put another way, if a perpetrator was a white male American Christian, or even conceivably might be, they'd be shouting that fact from the rooftops. If they're coy about the perp, he's a Muslim, or some minority, guaranteed.

198 This means most Americans are very poorly informed. There is absolutely zero question that Trump and his campaign were spied on, we've had repeated testimony in congress, statements by the DOJ, and stories in the media about it.

The only question is whether or not the spying was justified, not whether it took place or not. The fact that even a small minority aren't aware of this is troubling.

321 Jack Straw: (said) Horowitz is not a prosecutor, he's an IG. All he does is investigate and produce facts. The report was great, a lot of people just had bad expectations of what he would produce.
----------

I read his entire last report. Deeply disappointing (and disturbing). Essentially, he said that OIG doesn't look at reasonableness. They will report (potential) rule violations, but do not inquire (at all) into whether conduct was reasonable or whether other means could have been employed to achieve better results. I'm sure, this is in accord to IOG mandate. But result is, absolute deferral to "discretion" of agency decisions.

To the extent the next IOG finds outright rule violations, it will be informative. But these corrupt officials CLEARLY crafted this entire investigation to ostensibly "follow the rules." Hell, Obama even changed many of the key rules of FISA, unmasking, sharing of intelligence with foreign allies, etc., perhaps with the specific design to enable this conduct.

What we need is someone to take a look a the whole. To look at substance rather than form, and tell the public what really happened here, and whether the officials involved abused the rules and process to improper ends. I fear THIS inquiry is beyond the purview of the OIG, absent actual provable violations.

Put another way, these bastards went through all the motions to get FISA warrants, to get FISA-court "blessing" to do what they did. By design. They're utterly corrupt, but most are not dumb.

325 The left believes that truth is whatever people are willing to believe. That is why they are always talking about narratives and not about truth. The left believes that if what they say is believed than it is true and valid. So what they are trying to say is that spying is bad and since they are good what they did was not spying. Obama minions came up with this super clever way to justify spying on Donald Trump's campaign not because they really believed that Donald Trump, a multi-billionaire colluded with the Russians but because it gave them a tactical political advantage and an adolescence thrill. They laughed about all the way to Hillary's expected inaugural party.

330 Here's a how polling works:

A scientist walks through Central park trying to chat up girls. Most ignore him, but 1 out of every 10 girls he approaches talks to him. Of those, 50% agree to have sex with him within the hour. After sex, he discovers, that among the girls who had sex with him, 90% demanded payment and turned out to be prostitutes.

From this he concluded:

50% of girls are modest virgins
5% of girls are promiscuous sluts
45% of girls are prostitutes

That's basically how polling works.

However, needless to say, he's leaving out of his calculations the 90% of girls who never spoke to him in the first place. So, for that 90%, he just extrapolates the findings he did discover, and applied the same percentages to all of them, assuming that the non-responders were basically the same as the responders.

"But that's absurd!" you protest. "The non-responders didn't respond because they REALLY didn't want to have sex with him."

And that is almost certainly true. So the true statistics, taking into account the non-responders, would be

95% are modest virgins
1% are promiscuous sluts
4% are prostitutes

...approximately.

As absurd as this scenario seems, it's actually how all modern pollers calculate their results. THEY IGNORE THE NON-RESPONDERS and exclude them from the calculations. Then they take the percentages of those who DO respond, and apply them to the population overall.

QED: Polling is completely bogus. Fake.

331 Mark, not exactly. The commies were fast and impetuous or reckless to act, not the same thing as more dedicated, and also their motives in doing so were often exactly what you'd think: establishing their own position for the post-German era, which they knew could only be delivered by the Allies. Not to mention their own power-mad little warlord crap, which was epic in many regions. Very few including commies were anxiously taking up arms against the Germans, for good reasons: barbaric reprisals. Of course in many places the commie FTP would "act" anyway, even knowing the only significant result would be barbarities against innocent bystanders in the village they used to stage their attack.

Think it's a greatly varied picture, very little of it pretty, including on the commie side.

Why do you think Horowitz started a completely new investigation focused exclusively on FISA abuse?

Everyone knows what happened at this point. Hell, some of us knew the basics back in May of 2017 when Rosemary Collyer released her report detailing FISA abuse going back 5 YEARS at least. The 702 process has been shutdown since the fall of 2016 because of what Admiral Rogers found and reported to her.

Horowitz has reported interviewed between 50 and 100 people for this investigation alone. By statute, he must report any crimes he finds along the way to the DOJ for follow up by prosecutors. It's highly likely there are crimes already being looked at given how obvious the fraud on the court was.

Meadows, Jordan, Nunes, etc., have all said how much they are looking forward to the report because they know how thorough and good Horowitz is. I'm with them.

410 Grump, that's part of it. "All-Russian Extraordinary Commission on Combating Counter-Revolution and Sabotage". Flows so much better in Russian: Vsye-Rossiskiye Chezvrechainaya Kommisiya pa Borbye s Kontr-Revolyutziyi i Sabotazhem.

Mark, the Resistance working with London and the Free French and later the OSS more/less accepted and obeyed the strategy, which was to wait until the key moment for large-scale actions (some extraordinary acts of sabotage were conducted long before D-Day, usually with SOE help). The key moment was the last moment, or even D-Day itself. The commies followed nobody's orders, or strategy, unless they paid attention to regional or national leadership (they often didn't) of their own.

Definitely differences between the two groups, and you're right they were much more active prior to D-Day, and as noted there was little enthusiasm to take on the Germans by most people, for good reasons, and the commie groups did put points on the board much more often prior to the invasion.

431 349..(Jack Straw) Why do you think Horowitz started a completely new investigation focused exclusively on FISA abuse? ....
------------
Because that wasn't in-scope of his original task order. I hope you're right, friend. Like I said, if these corrupt bastards wrongfully gamed the FISA process (by withholding exculpatory evidence; by intentionally under-reporting provenance of Steele Dossier; by falsely claiming their evidence stack was vetted; by misrepresenting relationship with Steele; by failing to disclose to Court the Ohr connections, among others -- there are multiple potential vectors of actual rule violations), then OIG report will be a barn burner of the ages.

But if he takes kid-glove approach to FISA approach like he did in Hillary investigation abuse, he'll conclude that "FISA requires FBI to submit X to FISA. We found that FBI did in fact provide X to FISA. OIG will not comment on whether X was reasonable or whether X should have been more or less than what it was"... etc.

Like I said, I thought last OIG report really missed the mark on the the fundamental concept of oversight. Bowing to prosecutorial discretion and decision making isn't oversight, especially in a scenario when truly unbelievable efforts were made to sustain the appearance of legitimacy.

In many areas of law, Courts and regulators look beyond form to substance. Like financial reporting law, you may hire the best accountant born to earn to legally and legitimately dot and cross i's and t's, but regulators will set it all aside if the scheme violates the substance and ultimate goals of financial reporting. That's what's needed here, and I truly hope the OIG is up to the task (and CAN accomplish that task under his mandate)...

I think Comey is insane, the kind of low-level insane that lets you function fairly well in life, but out of touch with reality. I've run into guys like this before; so absolute in their certainty and so able to simply disregard what does not fit their world that they are slightly unnerving to be around.

Watch his hearing with Trey Gowdy where Gowdy systematically and inexorably destroys his "no intent" argument and shows it has no legal bearing, and further that Comey knows it does not and knows that this is not a valid reason to shut down an investigation. And Comey agrees with every word, but does not at any point look concerned, confused, or defensive. He simply goes along without changing his position whatsoever.

Posted by: Clifton at April 17, 2019 05:34 PM (3oCng)

441 >>I know you are sincere, but really, at this point, it's like waiting for Godot.

Not really. It's a slow process but it's falling into place in a pretty logical way.

Do you remember why Trump said he didn't release the FISA applications and 302s yet? He said he was advised by his legal team not to do anything while Mueller was still investigating that could be called obstruction. That's what's played out and now Mueller is done.

Do you think it was a coincidence that Barr announced during his Congressional hearings the other day that the FBI spied on Trump and he would be investigating the investigators? Cause I don't. That's the next logical step. Do you think it's a coincidence that Horowitz is producing his report now that Mueller is finished? Again, I don't.

The fact is that people here are impatient because they follow it all day, everyday, but in the grand scheme of things it hasn't been that long. The Whitewater investigation when on for 6 years. Watergate was 4. This has been 2. Hell, I remember the night when people here was absolutely positive McCabe wouldn't be fired. Then he was.

This is the single biggest political scandal in the history of the country. It dwarfs Watergate. It includes virtually every Obama agency that could be involved and numerous foreign countries. It is both huge and sensitive.

These investigations always take time. But now the counter investigation can proceed without danger to Trump. Two dozen or so senior FBI/DOJ people have been fired or forced out and some criminal investigations are underway with more coming. And we are just beginning to get to Ukraine.

A little patience might be a good idea cause this still is going to take time.

443 What the idiot left wing navy doc appears to be talking about is that Trump's commercial operations for many years have done their banking with Deutsche Bank, which is German, not Russian. They gave him better terms and better service for what he needed starting a long time ago. Now Deutsche Bank has also done a lot of work with Russian outfits - as has every German bank over the last couple of decades.

So, as I understand it, Trump did his banking with an international German Bank, Germany is kinda sorta close to Russia and they talk to them every now and then, and so naturally that is proof that Vladimir Putin has been financing the Trump family directly. It's obvious, isn't it?

To delay and prevent facts from coming out. To gain 2-years to massage the narrative. To settle it in the public consciousness. To hide behind "on going investigation." This is one of the most remarkable points to consider when assessing the End of Mueller. Astounding -- truly astounding -- that this team populated with Hillary loyalists and the very insiders that started this mess -- were utterly unable to retroactively justify the Steele Dossier basis of the investigation.

But unless Barr/Penis announce SWAT-style raids of bad actors tomorrow morning, I fear that tomorrow will simply mark the the beginning of the next goal-post move by these corrupt asshats. Inconceivable to me, that Mueller team didn't sow the report with innuendo or out-of-scope offenses to fuel another 2-years of Progressive Narrative deployment.
