The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

According to the French police, 875 of France's 42,258 churches were vandalized in 2018. And who is being blamed? "Militant Secularism."

I didn't make that up!

Until last evening I was unaware that there was a powerful movement of secularists ready to do violence to combat the rampant spread of religion through France. Of course the pesky little fact that the number of religious Frenchmen is shrinking rapidly, and has been for years, is conveniently ignored, as is the fact that France is already a carefully secular country, where even marriages are separated into two distinct events...the civil and the religious.

Maybe there is a deep vein of hatred for organized religion in France. Anything is possible, except of course Islamic terrorists starting the fire! The immediate rush to claim that it was an accident, when the fire was still smoldering seems to me more of the same cowardly insistence that Islam is a "Religion of peace," and blaming Muslims for the terrorist acts committed by their coreligionists is Islamophobic and awful and oh so un-Western.

I sure would like to know what's up with this: a video of a man inside the cathedral after the fire had started. It's probably nothing, as most things are, but it is certainly worth investigating.

Do I think Notre Dame was torched? I have no idea, but in the current geopolitical climate, in which attacks on Western religious and cultural icons are an important part of the playbook of militant Islam, one would think that an investigation that does not include a priori assumptions is a good thing.

Below the fold is a map of the church's vandalized in France last year. It is breathtaking.

39 A great many relics were saved, as was the altar. It's impossible to fully appreciate the effort needed to rescue so much of Notre Dame's majesty... and conversely, why that means its destruction was not malicious. A few rowdies could effortlessly do more damage to the Rose Windows than a multi hour blaze.

Still, considering the amount of hate pushed against churches in France, I don't think even a reasoned government investigation will stop people blaming Islam.

60 This Paris cathedral is a common target:

A 41-year-old man appeared this Friday before the Court in Bobigny on charges of damaging the organ in the Basilica. The hearing has been postponed until May 10.

A dialogue of the deaf. "I don't know how I'm involved in this case," the defendant told the Bobigny court on Friday. Suspected of damaging two doors, several stained glass windows and the organ of the Basilica of Saint-Denis in March, this 41-year-old man is being brought to trial for an immediate appearance.

The 40-year-old was arrested on Thursday at the detention centre in Vincennes (Val-de-Marne), incriminated by his DNA found in the Basilica. A Pakistani national, he arrived in France two months ago and does not speak French. He has already been cautioned by the law twice for damaging property in February.

Fear. I think the agenda is outright terror. They have brought in an incompatible replacement population, and that incompatible replacement is attacking the host like a cancer. If they name it, they will have to do something about it, and that will be violent and disruptive for at least a generation.

If you're a politician or especially in state administration, this should be avoided. It is better to remain mute or provide some other - ANY other - option. It's fear and cowardice. They made a mistake and their sinecures at risk. So the discussed causes of the outcome will be discussed in an unrelated or only minor/tangentially related context.

It's cowardice, fear and probably some degree of hate for the normality they disrupted.

Well, sure, depending on whether it's maintenance sex or "romantic" sex. I don't think there should be a problem with either like there is nothing wrong with a gourmet meal or a quick snack so you don't get hungry. There's a place for both and both should be enjoyable. 103 Given the other circumstances, I'm not going to be convinced it's an accident unless they get some French construction worker on TV admitting he did something boneheaded.

And even then I will be skeptical. We know they've tried to burn it down in the past.

Posted by: lurker (the other one) at April 16, 2019 11:22 AM (67XdO)

104 an example of how easy it is for construction incidents to start fires - I was a member of a church which had hired contractors to redo a ceiling in the sanctuary which had some mold and water damage. They were just about done, and in painting the ceiling after the repairs, they shoved rags up into the recessed can lighting, so the lights wouldn't get sprayed. A tag was taped onto the light switch saying "don't turn on" but the tag fell off, and someone walked in and turned the lights on just like normal. The painted rag up next to the light got hot and caught on fire, fell out of the can and fell right on top of an extremely expensive (and new) organ console, and burned it up. $300,000 loss (at least it was insured) because one guy forgot to take a rag out of a light and somebody else didn't know not to turn the lights on.

and that's just to point out that accidents happen in the most ridiculous ways.

That's bad enough. If I did it, I wouldn't take credit for it even if I normally would. There is a chance - even as sissified and internationalist and pinko as the French are - that French might just decide to use the actual army they have to do something about it. I also probably wouldn't take credit for it if I *didn't* do it. If this was terrorism (and "accident" does seem more likely), it was bad enough that even the frogs might consider it an act of war.

147 People aren't at war with the Church, they're at war with Western Civilization.

Literally the only thing standing in the way of global communism is western civilization and its product. Any symbol of western civ is vunerable from the world trade centers to Notre Dame. If it came or comes from the confluence of Roman Civilization, Germanic tribal civilization, and Christianity it offends these little commies, whether they're islamists or some other version of socialist scum.

Gothic architecture, an outgrowth of Romanesque, which in turn was a convergence of Germanic, Roman and Byzantine (Greek/Persian) influences particularly embodies western civ.

Notre Dame was literally built when the king was "the king of the Franks" not "France." It was built at a time when the monarchy was attempting to reassert itself over the nobles and highly divided post-Charlemagne era of petty princes, no money, little trade, invasions from muslims, slavs, Magyars and Vikings.

The great European cathedrals are literally symbols of Western Civilization (Rome + Christianity) over chaos.

150 "attacks on Western religious and cultural icons are an important part of the playbook of militant Islam"

While this is accurate inasmuch as what is true of the superset remains true of the subset, it could read:
"attacks on counter-narrative landmarks are an important part of the playbook for authoritarians"

Islamists destroy far more than Christian monuments, and more broadly our own country contains tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, who would destroy every piece of history that does not align with this hour's fashionable opinion.

In some ways, the crumbling of buildings is merely symbolic but of little cultural consequence. The understanding of everything the buildings meant, good and bad, was lost before the buildings themselves.

Considering the way that the secularists in the French Revolution slaughtered clergy and razed churches, I can definitely see that their cultural and political descendents would love to see Notre Dame burned to the ground. But I don't see them having the balls to actually go through with it, and if they did, they'd never admit it.

The mohammedans, on the other hand... totally plausible. Especially with the Frog authorities ruling out arson before the ashes have cooled.

The Smashing of Statues is been a feature of Islam from the very beginning - Graven Images are thought to be Evil. 159 With militant Islamists torching and destroying anything which they see as infidel made/related/owned. Car-B-Q anyone. With the left leaning authorities of the West always covering up the radical's destruction and crime.

How can any report that doesn't find either militant Islamists or militant leftist/secularists to have torched Notre Dame to be believed? They will demand that it is publicly believed but that will just make the situation worse.

Taqiyya and leftist lies have consequences in the end.

There are times, unironically and with no snark, that you can embrace the power of and. This is one of those times.

Notre Dame is a cathedral. It is a church and a seat of Church power. It is profoundly non-secular and moreover is incredibly religious. It is also a site of tremendous national heritage and cultural value just by virtue of being French. I think that it is both. As a Jew, for example, it is not my church. As a product of European civilization, however, I found the fire to be heart-wrenching. Things like giant medieval cathedrals fill both roles.

True, but the protestants did a lot of damage too, elsewhere. The iconoclastism reoccurs regularly. My own catholic church was so filled with leftist scum, it had 0 images for a while. i think there was one ahistorical touchdown Jesus but nothing else. These "catholics" literally built the place like iconoclasts themselves and their reasoning was highly "humanistic." It was really a monument to their leftist selves. He can also not be locked into some ultra macho-let's knock off all the heads of everybody who looks at us cross eyed-view, nor some effeminate version of gentle Jesus meek and mild. He was a unique individual who both threw over the tables in the Temple and compared himself to a mother hen who wanted to gather the people under her wings. This came up yesterday, too, and I piled on. It wouldn't surprise me if virtually all fires are treated as accidental by default unless they find evidence to the contrary, and which point they'd pivot. Most fires are accidental, so having that as a default stance would make some amount of sense in the general case of "fire investigation."

The fire was put out quickly with no injuries reported... Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib, director general of the Jerusalem Waqf and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, hinted that the fire could have been started by children who were seen playing in the area.

Even the "turn the other cheek" is misinterpreted and taken out of
context. The admonition is to turn your cheek that is hit by a master to
a slave to the cheek that is hit by an equal to an equal. Make the
striker see you as a person, not as their slave. Hold yourself in
dignity. But that's been lost to 99.9% of people as the awareness of a
master striking a slave in a different way than he would an equal was
lost to history.

After you "turn to him the other cheek," there's essentially nothing. Nowhere does He say you can't defend yourself against aggression. Sounds to me like He's saying, "OK, the other guy started it and if he doesn't stop after you've shown him you patience, then you can start whoopin' his ass."

If you've ever had a bully pick on you, you know the best and prolly the only way to stop him is to stand up to him and beat his ass if you can. Even if you don't defeat him, he's likely to see your strength and leave you alone after you confront him.

Pussy Christians bug me a lot. We're not supposed to give in to assaults, either on our persons or on our beliefs. Too many alleged Christians do, enough so that when a few of us do start to stand up against aggression, we're castigated for it instead of being joined.

Perhaps more insidious are the efforts to rot the church from within. See: The Episcopal Church, PC(USA), and current efforts of certain elements within the Methodist Church.

The people engaging in these activities are all convinced that they occupy the moral high ground, and are acting on 'the strength of their convictions'. That they are killing the churches simply does not register in their heads, no matter what facts are laid before them.

It wouldn't surprise me if it's uninsured. Or, to use the euphemism, if the RCC or the French government (I know the French state owns it, but the RCC operates and maintains it, so I don't know who holds final liability) "self-insured" or in other words were comfortable with the risk of loss.

If the French state is on the hook for liability, then that will be the official and actual story. If the RCC is on the hook for liability, then there will probably be two investigations and if they don't agree then things get interesting...

529 I don't think that one is mentioned in Revelation as a sign of the End Times.
In any case, if the Cubs winning the World Series didn't set things in motion, I don't know what will.

535 Um, Jerusalem's Church was led by James the Just to whom Jesus appeared in a separate revelation 1 cor 15:7
Posted by: dagny at April 16, 2019 12:29 PM (nRWPy)

Jerusalem started off as the Center of early Christianity and would probably have led to the to a much more Judaic form - except the legions of Vespasian and Titus settled that theological argument in 70 AD when they left Paul and his followers as the Last Men Standing, as far as early Christianity went.

From our viewpoint, it's easy to overlook the fact that the catastrophe of 70 AD would have wiped out about 90% of the early church's leadership figures.

546 Johnny Dollar - http://tinyurl.com/y5doubxu :

For over twelve years, from 1949 through 1962 (including a one year hiatus in 1954-1955), this series recounted the cases "the man with the action-packed expense account, America’s fabulous freelance insurance investigator, Johnny Dollar". Johnny was an accomplished 'padder' of his expense account. The name of the show derives from the fact that he closed each show by totaling his expense account, and signing it "End of report... Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar".

551 "Jesus is the way the truth and the life.....NO MAN comes to God except through Jesus.....your good works do not save you" joe

"no man comes to the Father but by me" .... yet there is a resurrection of the just (and of the unjust).

My interpretation is the spirit of sonship (Christ In You, the hope of glory ... ChristIn) ... is the Body of Christ. That still leaves the just and unjust (Bride?).

imo even the OT was based on just or unjust, not bloodline, despite the whole tribe thing. Daniel 12:2 "And many of them that
sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life,
and some to shame and everlasting contempt". Shame due to their actions.

just being in the tribe is not the thing ... Gentiles, law written in their heart, kind of thing. Jews had the law itself, but still a matter of heart, imo.

I'm just not willing to agree with, or live by, a code that says only Christians (good or evil) get heaven/paradise. My fellow patriots are not "the damned" if not Christian (or Christian in name only) ... the are good people fighting for choice.

(but I disagree with much of the institutional church, especially that the OT aways speaking of the cornerstone/foundation being the coming savior, was ever referring to petulant Peter or any man other that JC son of God. (not God the son, the Orwellian twist). JC is THE foundation/rock on which whole body is built.

anyway ... Christians should stand up for Christianity, government should stand up for individual liberty (to choose good or evil).

553 Technically speaking Jerusalem doesn't feature all that highly in the Christian tradition. It's not a see of any of the Apostles and was elevated later by a Byzantine emperor.
Posted by: Someguy at April 16, 2019 12:05 PM (HUFx

It was the seat of Christianity at the start and Paul was a fringe player with his desire to work among the non-Jewish population.

Things changed with the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD in the Revolt when most of that group was wiped out, or discredited and Paul's way took over.

556 For 'Puddin head' in case he was serious;

"Catharism ... from the Greek: ..., katharoi, "the pure [ones]") was a Christian dualist or Gnostic revival movement that thrived in some areas of Southern Europe, particularly what is now northern Italy and southern France, between the 12th and 14th centuries." (wiki).

Btw, "The Cathars were the early prototype Protestants."? "Christian dualist or Gnostic"? Well, if you say so.

557 France has a tradition of political atheism and anti-clericalism dating back to the Revolution, when churches were stripped of traditional icons and "the worship of Reason" was imposed. That madness was dropped quickly, but throughout the 1800s there was deep tension between the Church, which was politically allied with the reactionary right, and the liberals (actual classical liberals). The radicals were even more anti-religion. E.g. the Communards of 1871, who torched many churches (including Notre-Dame) during the retaking of the city by the government.
Remember that France has several Communist and para-Communist parties, and that far-left candidates drew about 16% of the vote in 2017 legislative elections.

So it is not absurd to ascribe church vandalism in France to "militant atheists".

558 I don't know if we'll EVER know for sure what happened.

After all, here in the good ol' USA our President Clinton was not going to have any terrorism on his watch, so the bright streak-of-light and subsequent explosion of TWA flight 800 was officially determined to be static electricity in the hold, or an electrical short in the fuselage, or just-about ANYTHING other than a surface-to-air missile, despite civilian reports and amateur videos describing/ depicting a bright "something" heading TOWARD the aircraft BEFORE it broke up (therefore not fiery detritus resulting from some onboard catastrophe). The FAA and FBI investigated and announced that all the witnesses were simply remembering things backward. "Mechanical problem - case closed."

(Roughly the same thing happened with Steven Paddock, the Las Vegas / Mandalay Bay shooter: "Gee we studied this really hard and we've got no clue; case closed". When Your Gummint wants the facts kept quiet, they have ways of KEEPING the facts quiet.)

France has many-many-many very good reasons to tamp down public sentiment against its unassimilable ... uh, you-know-who ... immigrants. So I am absolutely CERTAIN the verdict will be "Just a Tragic Accident,
let's move on and heal now."
