He lives the next street over from me. The whole street has custom built houses. His house is REALLY nice, and not just a little nice. It's YUGE. It has a stocked ponde in front of the house. Years ago, one of the neighbor kids actually went over there to fish (it was his wife who let him fish - she is actually a pretty nice person).
But yeah, humble ol' John. He sometimes dresses like some rube when he is out to dinner. Years ago, we were in the same local restaurant, and he was in the next booth over with his buds. That's so over the top that I just want to insist that it *can't* be true. On the other hand...
I'd heard he was legitimately awful and that his guard unit covered for the women and also arranged not to let him anywhere near their wives. I even saw a "home town girl did well, went to DC" from my hometown, and wrote for home-town people, "I grew up here, you know me, and he really did this stuff."
I sincerely hope that some of those women are far enough out of it not to risk their careers and become VERY vocal if he tries to run again.

I have, from time to time, tended to do that. And you know, there is just no story there. I don't even have memories of individual acts of charity on my part because there's been sort of a lot of them and it's so minor that even saying "act of charity on my part" gives me the heebie geebies. And there's not an actual *story* there. Hey, we were driving and there was a guy with a sign and I just felt like "why not" and gave him a $5.
The only time that there was some sort of story to tell, I handed a guy a $20, he looked at my three kids in the back seat and then at me and said, "Are you sure?"
That was a cute story and sticks in my mind. Other than that, hey... share a sandwich on a bus, whatever... it's not a *story* it's just life. And it all runs together just like the rest of life does.

I've told this before here, anyone familiar with the actual writings of The Wickedpinto have likely read it before.
I was 17,
I went to go visit my girlfriend at the time at a campground that was our meating spot where we could be alone when we wanted, and she was there with another guy. That's how I found out that she dumped me, and was cheating on me, because I wouldn't have sex with her like a sneaky kid. I wanted our first time together to be special so I didn't sneak over to her house the previous week and take her body in the back seat of my car, because I wanted us to be special.
I go to the camp sight to be alone with her, and make the big plans for the first time we are together, and Boom, another dude, a half man, like literally half my size, high pitch voice, and scared shitless at my existence. Her family was disgusted with her knowing that she slapped that nice boy, me, in the face the way she did.
I was heartbroken, and a friend had me stay with her at her site because both my girlfriend at the times parents, and the friends parents didn't want me driving all messed in the head like I was.
I stayed up, everyone else got drunk, and stoned, I just got stoned, one of the 5 or so times I smoked pot in my life. I couldn't sleep, I just baby sat the camp fire listening to old music.
The song was Moondance, as the fire started to die, I leaned in to stoke the fire back up, and I nearly passed out in the fire, burned my hand, and I heard a pop.
I thought I was just stoned, but I heard another pop, and I looked around and saw another fire, a big one. Someone at another nearby campsite left their fire going and it spread to the licquor shed, of course everyone just called it a shed, but they were all just filled with booze and fuel for their mowers and carts.
I was like "OH SHIT!" so I took off running to the fire, and the shed was burning full tilt when I got there. I ran along the camping trailer at the location banging on the sidewalls waking up the people inside, and then along the neighboring trailers. "CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT" no one had a cell back then, I knew my friends parents did. Ran back to my friends, to call.
They were "don't know don't show" they weren't gonna take part, I ran to the "ranger station" told them to call, they did, I ran back to the fire and everyone was out, and there were 3 fucking hicks spraying a garden hose at the shed, which is fine, then one of them got a bright idea.
"The fire is inside, open the door"
I yelled "NO YOU IDIOTS YOU WILL MAKE IT WORSE!" But I was 17, they were drunk, so they knew what was right. they opened the door and WHOOSH! Shed went up like a fucking homecoming bonfire, I broke open the door to the trailer, apparently the people inside though they were being attacked or some shit, so they didn't come out after the first warnings, and when the noises were being made.
I'm a skinny white guy, but I was covered in soot, looked blacker than jimmy kimmel playing carl malone and my long hair was burnt and frizzed standing all over the place. The trailer started to catch near the natural gas tanks and I just kept throwing myself against the trailer yelling fire, while the drunks kept at it with their 3/8" garden hose at less than standard pressure. . .the fucking hero's who made everything worse.
The woman pulled her two kids out, and watched her plot, worth about 10K for the lot, and about another 15K for the trailer burn out as I sat exhausted, wondering if I did the right thing or not, high and exhausted and heartbroken.
and the woman was running around thanking everyone for "Saving us" and everyone was happy to take credit.
The woman never knew my name, I met her several times after and she never recognized me, but I made a point of letting her know that everyone who "saved her" that night made shit worse.
I wasn't a fucking hero, I was just a kid who saw a fire, and I woke up a family, and got them away from the fire. But those 3 fucking drunk idiots who spread the fire sure as shit felt like heros, and I made sure that everyone knew that they were not. I wasn't, I was just a kid. . . But they sure as fuck weren't even good people, let alone heros.
