AP Pushes New Leftwing Conspiracy Theory: "Puzzling" Number of Activists Connected to Ferguson are Dying (Usually by Suicide or Drug Overdose), And That Suggests They're Being Secretly Murdered by an Unidentified But Obviously White Cabal
The left pushes no conspiracy theories, according to the left and their kissing, under-the-shirt-but-over-the-bra cousins the NeverTrumpers.
Before getting into this article, let me just postulate that perhaps the "activists" tend to be people living on the fringes of society, able to get time off their "jobs" to go to a city to "protest" at a moment's notice, and therefore might be poor and have the generally poor health of the poor -- including mental health. Marginal employment and chronic unemployment correlate with bad health outcomes and increased mortality. And they might maybe indulge in the drugs a bit. Let me also suggest that people willing to throw molotov cocktails at police also generally live lives which occasionally intersect with violence and may die early for reasons having less to do with conspiracy than with statistical inevitability. That said, let's see what your leftwing media is cooking up to replace their Russiagate conspiracy theory.Two young men were found dead inside torched cars. Three others died of apparent suicides. Brie of Noassistan is wooden and generally pretty unlikable, but it's hard to know if that's because she's a biatch or that's just how her part is written (could be a chance to embrace the power of AND). I didn't get an overt GRRL POWER!!!! vibe, her backstory is basically written as pre-"treatment" Steve Rogers with (small) tits.
Most of the characters are actually pretty meh. The story is just as meh, actually.
Not surprised that it's doing fine at the gate - there's nothing to compete with and it's not Soylo-level bad.

Most people who have the type of success she has had just can't turn it off. Most people who hit it big in entertainment are one hit wonders. They did the right thing at the right time and have nothing else. Most of what I heard is the books are okay kids/YA literature. They are extremely derivative though.

None of it would matter if she was more than someone who got lucky with a strong editor in the beginning.
Now, she's unfettered by anyone who would remotely say no to her, so when she decides to create a new series of tales in the same universe (great idea!), she overstuffs the opening with so many characters, different motivations, and depressing tones that none of it works.
I'd be willing to bet that if her original editor were at her side while she was writing the first Fantastic Beasts screenplay, we would have gotten a much more cohesive story with much lighter notes.

I didn't think they were as good as the YA stuff around when I was a kid in the 60s...very bloated and not well thought out. But since it didn't (then) get into current events and thus be watered down and predictable due to PC I can see how it went over big and created a splash.

I didn't think they were as good as the YA stuff around when I was a kid in the 60s...very bloated and not well thought out. But since it didn't (then) get into current events and thus be watered down and predictable due to PC I can see how it went over big and created a splash.

The nearly exponential growth in size of the HP books says that she had the bit in her teeth and was running wild long before that. I didn't read all of them but the volume of words per interesting scene was declining rapidly.

Link in nic has some thoughts on that, coincidentally enough.
It actually makes me feel really good when I read something I've written and I have a negative reaction to it. It keeps hope alive that I'm not blinded by my own process and thinking when regarding my own writing.
I maintain that that's a key to becoming a quality writer. If you can't toss out entire shit chapters, then you have no business writing at all.

Sure, great concept but she's rushing things. It took her a long time to write the original books and she had tons of stuff worked out. This she's dumping out once a year, and it shows. Some writers can get away with that, hell L'Amour used to write several books a year along with multiple short stories. She's not one of them.
And its not like she needs the work, she's richer than the queen. I think she's starved for adulation and attention, so she's trying to milk that cow for a few more drops.

She's bad. Watch Kong: Skull Island (No, seriously, it's a fun movie.) All this outrageous stuff is happening, like a 50 foot ape killing half her traveling partners, spiders with legs that are 20 feet long, giant dinosaur-like creatures chasing and killing people, and they find a tribe of primitive people and a lost pilot from WW2 (The movie takes place in 1973). And through it all, no expression at all from Brie. I don't care how jaded a journalist she was supposed to be, at some point you have to give a look like, "Holy shit! That's a 50 foot ape and it just swatted down 3 military helicopters! You don't see that every day!" But not Brie.

I've yet to see the second one yet, but the first one had two completely separate stories, and neither worked very well. If she had focused on Newt and provided hints at the larger story along the way, I think it would have worked better.

If you want a concentrated bit of oddness, read "All you Zombies" - a time travel story about a dude who was his own mother AND father. While a previous story on time paradoxes "By His Bootstraps" is a lot of fun.
I was always more of a Clarke/Asimov fan, but RAH's stuff in the later days was just bad. At least Clarke kept all that stuff in the house in Ceylon on the downlow.

That's actually pretty common even with better authors - too many plotlines, too many characters, and no editor to say, can't we cut some of this crap out.
The last Wheel of Time I read was like 800 pages about three days or so where Rand al'Thor had lunch out a couple of times. In older days that crap had to be cut down to fit in a magazine and make money for the rent. Nobody had time for the bloat.

The reason I asked is because I am reading a declaration from the those folks in a packet handed out at a meeting. It said-in part-for those that are LGBTQIA that support us-on gay marriage in the church "we have your backs!" For those that think gays not being able to marry in the church is warranted to marry in the church "We are praying for you". It was highlighted. That's great!/sarc. In the context "We've got your back" it sounds rather adversarial and maybe it's me-but "We're payingfor you" and I'm not too sanguine about people who don't agree with me and are very angry about it telling me they'll pray for me. Sounds to me not like "I'm praying that esus will transform you into his image" but "I'm praying you WILL come to the same conclusion I do."

Mashable did a good takedown of the first season's overall story structure. the need for action and OMG PlotTwist!! crippled the thing.

I am semi-comatose for most of the day in both spring and fall. Pollen is hell.
Try Ephedrine tablets , like Primatene. They mix it with Mucinex so it is less likely to get made into meth. It is nominally an asthma med but it helps a LOT with allergies in my experience.
Just don't take it with caffeine unless you enjoy temporary psychosis.

One of the worst things that can happen to an author is too much success too fast. I don't say that as sour grapes, its just true. If you get too successful too fast, you think you know everything and won't listen to or permit editors, and publishers will let you get away with it as long as the money keeps rolling in. Wheel of Time is kind of infamous for this.
Look at any successful book series, 4 out of 5 have each book bigger and longer than the last. Harry Potter, Sword of Truth, Wheel of Time, on and on. They write a decent, tight first book, then they get bigger and more bloated each time until you're putting out doorstops that people skim a lot of just because they want to finish the series.

OT: so in the interests of family harmony, I went to see Cap'n MarySue
yesterday (Mrs. DocJ really wanted to see it). It's not awful. Also
can't say it's great or even good. It was entertaining, which is pretty

Brie of Noassistan is wooden and generally pretty unlikable, but
it's hard to know if that's because she's a biatch or that's just how
her part is written (could be a chance to embrace the power of AND). I
didn't get an overt GRRL POWER!!!! vibe, her backstory is basically
written as pre-"treatment" Steve Rogers with (small) tits.
Most of the characters are actually pretty meh. The story is just as meh, actually.
Not surprised that it's doing fine at the gate - there's nothing to compete with and it's not Soylo-level bad.

Saw it yesterday as well. Mrs.Bewalski and Moronette Bewalski both wanted to see it so I tagged along out of curiosity to see first hand how bad it was. I couldn't help, I laughed uproariously whenever there was a *null* ass shot of RestingButchFace McFlatAss. Wife kept glaring at me throughout and finally asked me why midway through, so I had to fill her in...then she started in with the laughing. Our 15yo daughter had to re-locate since we were embarrassing her.

I remember David Gerrold writing about his tribbles show for Star Trek. He forgot that his typewriter used elite instead of pica so his first draft was 50 percent too long and he had to cut it down in days to fit the show. Said it made it a lot better.

I can see that sort of. The original Mar-Vell was a "merciless Kree" (the stereotype of Kree) who basically learned there was another way to live than to be merciless.
Hence it's part of the *character* of the original Mar-Vell to be rather wooden and undisturbed, until he decides to oppose the Kree invasion plans. The Kree are the "master race of the Universe".

There is some indication in the story that she's been manipulated by the Kree to be kind of emotionless, and that's part of a large story (as in maybe next film she'll be a bit more expressive after breaking that conditioning) but that's just guesswork. If so, it was pretty poorly handled because it makes her kind of unlikable.

"Starship Troopers" was written in 1959. Heinlein heard about Eisenhower discussing a nuclear test ban treaty with the USSR, and got so spitting mad he quit working on "Stranger in a Strange Land" and knocked out "Starship Troopers" in six weeks.
See, even then, Heinlein thought Eisenhower was a milk-toast GOPe. It never ends, does it?
Heinlein wrote all the famous juveniles in the 1950's and got tired of writing the same thing over and over again, and was mad at the Scribner's censor, so he plotted out "Stranger in a Strange Land" and when he was free of Scribner's and had fulfilled his contractural requirements for the "juveniles", he got "Stranger" published.
Yeah, it shocked a lot of people. I had a friend in the 60's say that Heinlein got a BJ and then wrote "Stranger".
Actually, Heinlein and his second wife (in the 1940's) were "swingers" and had an open marriage. He actually came to hate it, and then met Virginia (the love of his life) and was faithful to her the rest of his life.
Sidenote: Heinlein and Clarke worked in the same building in the 1940's (war years) doing something sneaky and nefarious for the government. And that's where he met Virginia (the red head).

Its important to remember that while every book of the Bible is God-breathed and inspired, each one was written by individuals (sometimes more than one) and carries their stamp of style and approach. Also, each book has its own particular purpose, and as you read the Bible you see a concept theologians call "progressive revelation" in which God teaches a little bit more about him self as time goes on, instead of dumping it all on people at once.
So Job, a very, very early book written by a certain person comes across as kind of harsh, but for a purpose: its teaching God's absolute sovereignty and the total right to do what He sees fit at any time. Its a hard book to read when things are going very badly, but its a good one to read when things are going well.

The main part of the Book of Job illustrates Job's righteousness. And it's not at all like the "righteousness" of the three elders, or for that matter, Elihu, who was neither condemned nor commended by The Lord.

This comes up repeatedly - the theology of Job doesn't fit in very well with the rest of the Jewish Bible (or Christian additions) and most biblical scholars believe Job may be significantly older than any other book in the Bible, probably dating to even before Abraham and coming from one of the Fertile Crescent civilizations. (Sumer?) However, it's also felt that the books message about how to grapple with the universality of suffering was so important, and so unparalleled, that every generation chose to keep it around, in spite of the parts that don't quite fit.
evidence from the book itself - Job lives in a time when there is no such thing as "money", and his society counts wealth is in terms of offspring and cattle. Also, no mention of any governmental structures at all. Matches up with a very early level of civilization, and to me, it's quite fascinating to think that this particular book may have been around for 4,000 years or so.

But, Job, in his hardship *know* that his Redeemer lives, and his nearness to God anticipates the entire doctrine of the Resurrection.
