Romantic Chess

Pic Note:

Isn't Romantic chess wonderful? Bet he's not the first man to throw a game, hoping to get some favors from milady.

As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Easier Problem - White To Play (938 )

This position is from Reti-Tartakower, Vienna 1923.

Goal: White can force mate in 3 moves
Hint: Set up a deadly double check

More Challenging Problem - White To Play (855)

This is not a study or a made-up position. According to the information in my chess database, this position is from Zuckertort-Englisch, 1883. I would never be able to find the correct solution to a problem like this OTB, but it's fun to move the pieces around and expore the various lines.

Goal: White can force advantage exchanges, leaving Black with almost nothing
Hint: lots of tactics in this one, multiple deflections and a knight fork, but no underpromoting

Solutions Update

Easier Problem - White To Play

20190316 - Problem 1.jpg
rnb1kb1r/pp3ppp/2p5/4q3/4n3/3Q4/PPPB1PPP/2KR1BNR w kq - 0 1

1.Qd8+ Kxd8
2.Bg5+ Kc7

If 2...Ke8 then 3.Rd8#

3.Bd8#

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20190316 - Problem 2.jpg
4k3/p1P3p1/2q1np1p/3N4/8/1Q3PP1/6KP/8 w - - 0 1

1. Qb5 Qxb5

The only move. 1...Qd7 2.c8Q+ is disastrous for Black.

2. c8Q+ Kf7
3. Qxe6+ Kxe6

Taking the queen is not Black's only response. There are a couple of other lines, but the end result is pretty much the same. We'll look at them after the main line:

4.Nc7+ Kd6
5.Nxb5+ and wins

Instead of 3...Kxe6, Black can try running away. After all, he still has his queen. But his hopes will be dashed:

Line #1: 3...Kg6 4.Ne7+ Kh7 (4...Kh5 5.Qg4#) 5.Qg8#
Line #2: 3...Kf8 4. e8+ Kxe8 5.Nc7+ winning

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

It's called the Weight Watchers Complete Food Companion. It's available through WW in which case you have to join to get it. But Amazon also has copies.

And I probably should've mentioned this in yesterday's thread: don't join WW. Mrs. Muse is a long-time member, and ever since Oprah Winfrey got involved with it a few years ago, it's gone completely to hell. It's now a bunch of touchy-feely bullshit.

The system is good, though. I weighed myself this morning. I lost 3 more pounds this week, am now down to 180. Yay me!

Here is an Air Force film about guided missiles from 1948. It's pretty fascinating. Those early crude experiments were the ancestors of today's cruise missiles, ICBMs, smart bombs, and drones.

I don't think it's mentioned in the video, but the first surface-to-air missiles were developed in late WWII to counter the kamikazes, however the war ended before they became operational.

With the B on a5, the K can move to e7 after Rd8. The B on G5 prevents that.

164 Sorry if this has been covered, but it's freaking me out a bit -- the perp in the New Zealand massacre seems to be a troll. I don't mean that he's an Internet troll in his off hours, though that's certainly true. I mean that he somehow, through this heinous slaughter, thinks he's performing the ultimate trolling act. I got a hint of that when I saw a picture of him in the Daily Mail giving what they said was a "white power" sign, and saw that was the OK sign, and was forced to think: either he's stupid and gullible, or he's...trolling.
Hadn't managed to get that sorted out in my mind, really, but this Thomas Wictor analysis really brought the whole thing together.

It surprises me that no one in Europe has pointed out that the basic structure of the EU is virtually identical to the original Articles of Confederation in the US, which failed withing 6 - 7 years. Then the Confederacy tried to revive them, and one of the big non-military reasons they lost to the Federals was that their Government was completely ill-suited to dealing with any kind of emergency situations. (Lee's army starved and ran out Ammunition in Virginia while Georgia's Governor notoriously refused to provide them with any of the blankets and ammunition which he had stored in his warehouses, and Richmond had no power to compel him to do any different.)

The EU's form of government has been tried often before, and that form has ALWAYS collapsed when up against any external pressure.

No soreheads were pissing and moaning about cultural appropriation. Everyone was i a party mood.

One, its an end run around the Electoral College clause.

Two, it's end run around the Amendment requirement.

Third, it also creates an huge incentive for massive vote fraud and illegal immigration.

Fourth, if a state awards its electors to a candidate the voters did not choose, that is a huge Civil Rights violation.

Fifth, if states say they are awarding their electors based on national popular vote--even if it doesn't change anything--it becomes normalized.

Sixth, if a state awards electors based on a national popular vote in defiance of their own voters and it *does* change the election outcome, that's the that's the kind of shit that could start a civil war.

No more Trump winning by reaching out to the rust belt if PA, MI and WI had adopted the dumb popular vote system. Now maybe Trump would have won the popular vote if he needed to campaign for it but with the 130% of actual population registered to vote in some of the commie cities a national popular vote is scary as hell.

328 Hessians?
I know some folks that were descendants from some of the Hessians defeated by Washington at Trenton.
They could have gone back to Germany, but decided things weren't so bad here.

329 A lot of Hessians, and there were Germans from a few different states did stay either after being captive, or enlistment ended or desertion. Been awhile since I red the numbers but some units returned with half their numbers.

Yes, and they control the state. The suburban counties are turning more Democrat by the hour. They are never going back.

No, I'll just drive there myself and lie about having someone to drive me home.

337 Did
not know that, that is a very positive note, and I keep hoping that the
progs have severely misunderestimated President Trump, but the entire
Establishment seems hell-bent on screwing this country over to thwart
him!

The Dems these days are usually not arguing qualifications (because they can't) but they are arguing that a judicial nominee should be disqualified because of cases he/she had when in private practice or even when working for the government. "You represented X or argued Y! This is terrible!" A few of them went after a nominee because he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and therefore he wouldn't be able to be impartial.

338 I called Bux-Mont Transportation and they said they're just a taxi company and they won't wait for me. The surgery center insists that I have someone there to wait for me, so that does me no good.

I guess those of us without friends are just shit out of luck.

I impressed my sixteen year old into service. They were quite strict about having a licensed driver pick me up.

Maybe you can drive yourself there and get a cab for the trip home and another to recover your car.

Although I don't think the place I went would have gone for that.
