It was Towson State when I went there). Well, last week they did something that they've never done before: Hit #1 in the nation in all 3 polls. They've since dropped one to Cornell (the real one, not Olbermann 's cow college) and now sit at #5 with a big game against #2 Duke coming on Saturday. They've looked great this year, starting with a rout of the Charles St. Bluebirdies to open the season, and maybe, just maybe, they'll make it to the title game. Here's hoping. During the 2008 presidential campaign, I went to a party in Portland with a bunch of people I didn't know. I didn't out myself as a conservative, and at the party was an obnoxious 45-ish woman, who was obviously unattached, and obviously had at least a half-dozen cats at home.
This woman read aloud an essay that she had written, explaining why the blue states (by which she meant blue cities) were so superior to the red states - the blue states had the good universities, the blue states had the culture, yada, yada, yada.
As always, what she really meant was that the Superior People lived in blue cities, and the Inferior People (aka deplorables) lived in red areas. I looked at her, and thought: "If you are one of the Superior People, I'll take the Inferior People, thanks."
It's a very consistent result in surveys that people who live in rural areas are the happiest, people who live in suburban areas are next happiest, and that people who live in big cities are far and away the unhappiest.
It explains why many urbanities think that the suburbs are awful, alienating, and depressing places - it makes them feel better to think that there are a large group of people even more depressed and miserable than they are.

That's been a trope for decades. I've lived in the suburbs all my life and I like it here. I've never lived in a rural area so I don't know what that's like. I've visited cities but I have never wanted to live there.
I think the real reason why leftists denigrate the suburbs is that they allow middle-class people to own their own homes, which reflects badly on Soviet-style concrete apartment blocks.

I grew up rural, and only moved to the city a couple years ago because it was a needful thing, and I'm hoping to change it soon.
I was optimistic. It's not home, but the commute is easier, there's lots of fun things to do, etc.
No dice. It sucks. The charm wore off in months.
Now, I'm from the mountains, so this feels more weird and inhuman than home, and I'm sure people raised here have a different perspective and like it a lot more than I do.
But I just can't imagine it being as good, no matter who you are. It's kind of a mystery to me why people do this in the age of technology.
I had to for a range of reasons, but in this time of fast, reliable cars and access to all sorts of long range communication, I wonder why people choose to live piled on top of each other with no sense of community, or of self.
It's like a big concrete heap of contradictions.

When I travel into the city, I drive a few miles to a suburban park-n-ride, and ride light rail into the city. You would think that doing 80% of my trip by mass transit would be praiseworthy, but left-wing "transportation activists" hate suburban park-n-rides, because park-n-rides allow people to use mass transit while living in single-family houses.
They hate single-family houses as much as they hate cars - in their Utopia, everyone will be compelled to live within a quarter-mile of a mass transit stop (except for the Important People, of course).

The Pali's don't have a million people that will show up - I don't doubt they say that, but it's idiotic. They tried these all last year, and the most they ever got was about 30,000, I think. And of that 29,000 stood back and looked at the smoke, and only a relative few tried to get up close to the barbed wire. Where they got shot if they got too chippy.
And don't forget the military logic of shooting someone in the leg, rather than shooting to kill. Every time a combatant is hit in the leg he screams for his buddies to help him, and of course they do, because they're not organized with corpsman or anything. So, they're estimating that each non-fatal legwound actually takes 5 combatants off the field for the duration of the conflict. That's what you call a force multiplier.

There is one: the Royal Canadian Legion, which is the equivalent of the American Legion. There's a branch in my hometown, and I am old enough to remember when WWI vets from there would visit my elementary school. Among other things, they're the organization that distributes poppies every year for Remembrance Day (which is Veterans Day and Memorial Day wrapped into one day, November 11).

I live in the 'burbs now and quite honestly, it took me a while to get used to it. I was accustomed to walking everywhere, including work, and driving only on the weekends when I wanted to do errands. I now have to drive everywhere. I still kind of miss being able to take a 5 minute walk to pick up carryout or something at the grocery store. I don't miss crazy people on the street. And I parked in an outside lot when I lived in the city and my car was broken into on several occasions. Now it's in a garage and I didn't have to dig it out from under 10 feet of snow. So - pluses and minuses.

Every year up through 2017, it's been a tradition in our family to have a reunion in Laughlin at Easter. But last year we didn't do it because we all planned to go to Colorado on Labor Day weekend for my cousin's daughter's wedding. I enjoyed Colorado but definitely missed Laughlin last year. I like that place a lot.
Anyway, I was looking forward to everyone going this year, and now just found out a few days ago it's cancelled again, because my (sane) bro-in-law has been having some major health issues.
Okay fine, he needs to recuperate. I support that. What's interesting is everyone expected me to be really upset about missing Laughlin again. I told them I'm NOT... because I have a car of my own, money of my own, and if they don't wanna go, fine, I'll go myself.
So I'm looking forward to taking a solo trip to Laughlin/Bullhead this spring. It's gonna be fun IMHO. I've shared here before that 12 years ago, I spent a night in Blythe (at Motel 6 no less) for an exam to get state jobs, and long story short, I really enjoyed the time to myself. I think this trip will go the same.
Just wanted to share. Thank GOD I had the good sense to get a reliable car last year! Maybe this adulting thing isn't all bad.

I used to walk five minutes to the store. Now I drive five minutes to the store.
According to "urbanists", this change has caused me to become alienated, socially isolated, depressed, suicidal, and an all-round miserable person.
That five minute walk (which would now take me past tents inhabited by homeless people) "connected me to my community", and allowed me revel in being in "public space" that I can't exclude anyone from, no matter how aggressive or odiferous. Obviously much better for my mental health.

Sixty years on, the houses in this suburban development all have their own unique personalities, as do the people who live in them and care for them.

At least in Malvina Reynolds' time, the houses could be painted different colors, and they were on nice big lots. Look around cities today (and Calgary is very, very bad) the houses are all exactly the same color, or at best, a range between beige and taupe, and the roofs are all the same. And they are on tiny lots, so they nearly touch. And they are all in HOA's now, that won't let you change the damned color. Friend of mine calls those places "breeder boxes".

When my boat stopped in Esquimalt BC, some of the gate guards were Commissionaires which I don't think we have in the US. The way they described it - all of them were retirement-age Canadian Forces veterans - they check IDs, guard buildings, all the 'guy in a uniform' duties somewhere between mall cop/TSA and police officer would be here. They were all retired from ordinary civilian jobs but wanted to do something to keep busy and make some money, and they said they were pretty much guaranteed Commissionaires positions because they were prior-service.

But still, I liked oi as a kid because it rocked. I didn't really ever connect to the message, because American society didn't give a fuck about class. Their music was pro-British, and anti-Communist, but I never really thought about it.
We had commie punks who did care about class, but only squares listened to that shit. The cool stuff was just about having fun, and flipping the bird at those squares.
As I've gotten older the message of British working class rage in that music makes a lot more sense to me, and that's not a good change.

As Miley mentioned above I see, the fireants are trying to invade the premises here. Yesterday, I treated the yard with bait and applied some perimeter treatment.
It will take a while for it to control them. The bait is some growth regulator hormone that fucks up their reproductive cycle.
It has to be slow acting to get to the queen. Fireants sense of "smell" is to a dog as a dog is to humans. They can detect many funny things in the slightest.
Also, every food source and the chain of it is monitored closely. They have several parallel food chains and it has to pass through several "layers" before it gets to the queen. There are thus legions of food tasters. If anything happens, the entire line is kicked out of the colony and killed.

I have enough cable to watch games from the English Premier League, the Bundesliga (Germany), and leagues from Mexico and a good chunk of South America on a weekly basis. Then there are the Champions League and the Europa League. At the right times of year I can watch play-ins for international tournaments from all over the world. Copa America is later this year.

Vendette- I posted on the ONT a couple nights ago I went in...wow, almost exactly a week ago, I went in because a pain in my neck I thought was from shoveling had somehow spread to my arm suddenly turned into a diagnosis of Cancer. From " Why can't I lift my arm well?" to "WTF?!?!" in a span of hours.
But I'm looking at it as God trying to guide me, as I haven't been happy and certainly not doing all for His glory (not that any of us can, but I was putting in a Jeb "please clap" effort on it Sure some of this is still shock, but I've got to use this as a wake up call.
Hell look at how many others here fight, claw and scratch and never give up. I love this place and its peeps, and have to try to follow these funny text box peeps example.
Ive been talking to friends I havent in 20 yrs this week. I'm choosing to decide to be a different me, and I want that to be a happier one damn it.
Plus it doesn't hurt that HCWNBP.

I once served jury duty and brought knitting to pass the time in the jury lounge. There were other ladies in the room who did the same. A guy walked into the jury lounge and asked me now I got the knitting needles into the courthouse because his knitting project was confiscated by security. He picked it up when he left for the day. He was a bit mad. Of course, I brought a camera into the place on day one and on day two (I got on a jury) security noticed it and I had to do the pickup thing at the end of the day.

Biggest mixed bag to treatment right now is that I'm on (though a different kind of course) the steroid diet of your average 80s superstar pro wrestler and so for someone whose baseline is a form of depression- literally my diagnosis- mild mania is proving to be a wild ride I've never had.
Plus I practically a teetotaler due to impulse issues I've now had a sampling of a wide variety of drugs that I've only heard of before. Don't fancy any of them them, but can check a box....and would check many of them if I took a piss test right now as well.

Not commissioned officers can be designated via a warrant and are called warrant officers. I don't know if that is exclusive to Army though. Rank wise, they are above an NCO and below a commissioned officer.
They usually have specialized tech skills.

It's only been within the last 50 years or so that kids with severe food allergies survived childhood. Now they not only are surviving but they are breeding more kids with severe allergies. In the past most of those kids never made it out of childhood.
When I was a young kid I personally knew half a dozen or so families in our small circle of social life that had lost a child before they turned 5 or so. It was not uncommon then and most of those were lost due to childhood diseases before we had vaccinations and food allergies.
It's no surprise we are seeing more and more people with food allergies.

Just thought of another problem with self-driving cars. I went out to the local stop n shop through a school zone. Flashing lights, 15 mph. Looked down at my Garmin and it said 35 mph speed limit.
So they have to figure a way to look for those blinking lights and adjust the speed accordingly.
Say you're a passenger in a self-driving car, it blows through the school zone, and a cop pulls the car over. Who gets the ticket?
