F and V are very close - the V sounds has the vocal cords moving (voiced) whereas F doesn't, but they are otherwise pronounced the same (labiodental frictive, if my memory serves). Not surprising that it would shift over time.

110 The "v" sound is written with "f" in a number of languages--German is one. Oddly you pronounce the written "v" as closer to "w". Go figure.

Sort of the other way around. The car is pronounced folksvagen.

There is no W sound in German, which makes it hilarious when a Hun finally learns to say it. "I come from a small willage and I like to watch telewision".

340
The bit about "wop" from Nancy Pelosi is pure, unadulterated bullcarp, and I'm disappointed CNS News didn't point it out."Wop"
comes from the Italian "guappo". It means "dude" or "dandy", and is in
the Southern Italian dialect, according to the Pedia of Wiki. In some
dialects, it comes out as "wah-po" - you know, like the rag that is
killing Democracy in the Darkness. Except they also tend to drop ending
vowel sounds, so it comes out like ... "wahp".BTW, it isn't really a
slur in Italian. It's akin to "homey" in certain US groups. But, it got
turned into a slur here because... well, because it could. Also, the
Pedia of Wiki says flat out that Pelosi's interpretation is a "false
etymology", and that it couldn't be, since the word was in use in
America in 1908, while passports and immigration papers weren't
instituted until 1918.

Viacom is worse than the mafia.

You wonder why a basic cable package is like $100? (I actually have no idea how much it costs, I haven't had cable in a decade)

Viacom makes providers pay ever-increasing amounts for their entire cable line up. Every renegotiation, the price goes way up.

250 And, willowed (if I understand that correctly) from the Morning Report, re Pelosi's bs about "wop":

Hard to imagine America really accepting these goofs for president, but TheNarrative is a 24/7 blanket coverage, and the social media censorship is not fully operational yet. And borders are still wide open, while our prosecutors still mostly persecute Trump, only vague promises about the real criminals facing indictments.

312 265 Tami. Interesting. We stream DirectvNow. Just heard from them that our package is going away. They are grandfathering it and we can keep it. However if we decide to change we can never go back. The packages they are offering new customers are pretty lean and just as expensive.
They are raising our rate $10/month. I'm guessing they will eventually raise our monthly and force us into another package. I don't care but the hubby will not be happy.

We switched from DTV to Comcast/Spectrum about a year ago. DTV was costing us over $225 a month. Comcast, initially, was much less than that for cable, internet and phone. They've since raised their price to close to what we were paying for DTV but still it's for all three services.

I got the impression we were supposed to be horrified at the attitudes and beliefs of people in 1960. With their cigarette smoking and hitting their kids and supporting Nixon in the 1960 election. I guess as the show went through that decade people were supposed to evolve and become more lefty enlightened. It backfired a bit as some people liked the look and attitudes of the people on the show.

349 The bit about "wop" from Nancy Pelosi is pure, unadulterated bullcarp, and I'm disappointed CNS News didn't point it out.

Pelosi is a few years older than I am but back in junior high social studies we were taught that "wop" meant exactly what Nancy said. It has been a very long time, but as I recall that appeared in a book about immigration written by John Kennedy. Yes, the Kennedy's have been pushing that crap for generations.

499 An acquaintance I follow on FB, not even someone I like very much, posted today that her daughter was told BY A FRIEND that white people should die, and that saying so isn't racist because it's impossible to be racist against white people.

The poor kid now feels sick to her stomach for being white.

I will CRAWL OVER BROKEN GLASS to vote for Donald Trump in 2020 because this bull-shit evil can't be allowed to prosper.

Progressive moral scolds don't even believe that racism is wrong. They believe that whites are so superior that they can't be hurt, not even some poor teenager. They believe that THEY are Good People for pushing destructive, toxic ideologies. And they have the NERVE to say that Trump is a racist?

Lol. The WSJ has an article announcing Americans are no longer the "tallest". That's perhaps because they are importing people from south of the border who are all about 4 feet high, with bodies shaped like kidney beans.

520 Pelosi is a few years older than I am but back in junior high social studies we were taught that "wop" meant exactly what Nancy said. It has been a very long time, but as I recall that appeared in a book about immigration written by John Kennedy. Yes, the Kennedy's have been pushing that crap for generations.
Posted by: moon_over_vermont at March 22, 2019 10:52 AM (kUmUV)

If "wop" were derived from "without papers", why does it apply only to Italians, and not all the other ethnicities who were immigrating at the time? Why are Polacks and Bohunks not "wops", too?
