Google Makes You Jump Through Hidden Hoops To Get Their Service To Stop Tracking Your Movements -- But Then Still Continues Tracking Your Movements, Even After You've Jumped All the Hoops

In Soviet Russia, you inform on yourself.

Lawmakers called out Google on Tuesday at a Senate hearing on data privacy, pointing out how many hoops average people need to jump through to stop the tech giant from tracking them.

Google lets people opt out of location and data tracking, and notes that people consent to providing their data by agreeing to its privacy policy.

Sen. John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, criticized Google's privacy policy, telling Will DeVries, the company's senior privacy counsel, that the average person doesn't read those documents.

"You can hide a dead body in there and nobody would ever find it," Kennedy said at the hearing.

...

"Our current notice and consent model is broken," Michelle Richardson, the Privacy and Data project director at the Center for Democracy and Technology, said in her opening remarks...

Opt-in consent means you have to agree to all uses of your data before it's collected...

Opt-out consent is the current status quo, where people's data is collected by default if they use a service, forcing them to go to their privacy settings to shut off the data gathering.

"There is significant evidence that defaults are sticky, and consumers rarely alter their default privacy settings," said Sen. Mazie Hirono, a Democrat from Hawaii. "The privacy regime should be an opt-in."

Via Ed Driscoll at Instapundit, who includes this quote:

"'They [customers] think they can opt out of the tracking you're performing, but they can’t meaningfully opt out," [Senator] Hawley said. 'It's kind of like that old Eagles song, 'You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.'"

Are "conservatives" finally starting to side with their voters' interests rather than with their (leftwing) corporate donors' interests? Is Hawley serious or just Hollywoodin' for the rubes?

We'll have to see.

Honest people don't need to hide the terms of the service they're enlisting you into.

11 "Our current notice and consent model is broken"

It's not "broken," it's evil. It was written by lawyers and reviewed by dozens more lawyers and Google executives. Every word in there has been carefully vetted and reviewed, and says exactly what Google wanted it to say.

12 if it was only for consumer info, to better sell me something, not terrible. But the Google method supplied to China is probably already in place for Americans. So we all have an SPLC and/or Soros approved MediaMatters SJW "credit rating" being run on us at all times.

This will be useful for law enforcement to not so randomly stop cars maybe, or add to a bank's credit info, or to determine who gets an audit, or whose kids get college admissions ... or who gets the jobs, health care, promotion/demotion ... but Google would never do that, they are just innocent kids.

21 Republicans would hit pay dirt with voters if they went after Big Tech. And Democrats would be boxed in because the Left is basically bankrolled now by Tech Oligarchs.

But for some reason, a silly $1,000 check from Google and Republicans would sell out their own daughter.

It really is astonishing how A) politicians think money (and not votes) wins elections and
B) how cheap it is for some to buy these people off

Look at how much Google employees give Republican candidates, it's a joke yet they still put on the kid gloves.

44 The Android relentlessly asks permission to track every GD thing you do. Why does it need to know where I am to send a message?

And why does an electronic level app need to have access to my contacts, mic, camera, photos and location?

Seriously? That's going to help me find out if this bookshelf is level or not? I have a couple of Android tablets, but am sticking with my iPhone and iPad for most of my use. At least Apple puts of the pretense of caring about your privacy.

Posted by: Ben Had at March 14, 2019 07:15 PM (SHEJ2)

46 The tracking is vector, too, so it includes speed and direction, not just location.

It's also a lot more powerful when you visualize a bunch of it at once. Hypothetical example; let's say you want to locate and bust, oh, dog fighting rings.

Start with an individual known or suspected of participating - whether from prior arrests, or search behavior, scraping email contents, whatever. Examine their movements over a month, panning around a map. Discount obvious known commercial or public locations like schools, retail, etc. Eyeball all of the rest by toggling filters on and off that show your entire set of tracking data for that vicinity. Expand your time horizon and look closer at anything that sticks out.

If your dude is gathering with other people on a recurring basis, you *will* find out where and when in a matter of hours.

And that's just investigating using location data - not the broader profiles of connections you can take advantage of with the sort of thing FB maintains, or using military networking software.

Google has already said your gmail is their property. I use email on my own private server (a hell of a lot more private than hillary), but of course, most people you correspond with are on gmail, hotmail, outlook, live etc., so it really doesn't matter.

113 I've done some programming with Google's Map service APIs, and the irony (cough:hypocrisy) of all that is: even though Google charges for the API usage, AND for the data that's transmitted over the API, they are also extremely particular about what you're allowed to do with the data you've bought from them. They shut down our access and disabled our product, because they suspected that we might have been violating their terms of service.
We weren't doing anything shady with it, but per their TOS, one is actually not allowed to hold on to the data (we purchased and paid to access) for longer than the cache allowance of a normal HTTP request....basically, you can't save it in any way, shape, or form.
Now the private, unsolicited data of their users on the other hand...they'll go through all sort of shady routes to make sure they collect and store that as much and as long as they like.

Reasonable assumption that everything transmitted via the internet for at least the past few years, if not the past few decades, has been recorded (for posterity), it follows that a combination of money grubbing salesmen would attempt to use that info to encourage you to buy stuff. Once you have that in place , monitoring of your every move, personal interaction, photograph, search request, purchase, and political or social comment is indexed (by computers churning through the vastness of the internet) and there is waiting for the prosecutor when your trial is scheduled to occur.
I always think of Disney's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" cartoon when this topic comes up, helpful at first, then totally out of control.

We do have to decide if we are a society that values contracts and adults' powers to bind themselves in contracts. According to Barky, the SCOTUS and GM, the answer was "No way!", but we really have to give that some serious thought.

Part of the biggest problem this society has had to deal with are the courts ignoring the plain language of contracts and deciding on a whim to nullify them. That is really not the best course to go on ...

I've said that here a dozen times easy. Damn thing worked with everything, from my car to PC, without having to do squat. The talk-to-text over my car's bluetooth worked great. People were too stupid to want a system that worked flawlessly with the PC they use every day I suppose. Too similar?
I actually gave up installing apps on my Android tablets, period. TBH really the only thing I use it for is if the battery on my iPad needs recharging, or especially as a disposable tablet when I'm flying my drone. Since I have to use GPS to set courses for it to fly autonomously, I'm ok with that. There's no contacts, pictures or anything else they can have of value on those things.

186 This is an interesting Joe Rogan podcast with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Vijaya Gadde, who serves as the global lead for legal, policy, and trust and safety at Twitter, and journalist Tim Pool.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZCBRHOg3PQ

It's almost 3 1/2 hours long, so I had to watch it in chunks. Gadde and Dorsey are painfully clueless about their own bias. Pool keeps shoving it in their faces and they keep denying it. It's almost comical.
