Wall Street Journal: Trump May Put Universities On the Hook for the Loans Its Students Take Out, and Incentivize Them To Make Sure Their Students Have Some Chance of Paying Back These Massive Sums

I'm pretty sure this is Authoritarian, Fascist, and Racist, because it imperils the left's phony-baloney jobs.

The White House is weighing a measure that would require colleges and universities to take a financial stake in their students' ability to repay government loans, an effort that could squeeze loan availability to students and reduce defaults.

For several months, Trump administration officials have been discussing enacting such a mechanism or making a push for one in Congress as part of a broader effort to combat rising college costs.

In the administration's budget proposal released Monday, officials made brief mention of a "request to create an educational finance system that requires postsecondary institutions that accept taxpayer funds to have skin in the game through a student loan risk-sharing program."

Such a proposal could be included in a coming executive order addressing higher education, several officials said...

The order the White House is preparing, expected in coming weeks and lead by the president’s daughter Ivanka Trump, will likely touch on several hot-button issues in higher education, including a possible provision tying federal research dollars to rules about free speech on campuses, these people said.

The executive order would be signed with an ink produced by crushing up Viagra tablets and mixing them with panther blood and cobra venom.

SAS Motto: Who Dares, Wins.

The GOP has been timid, half-hearted, and corrupted by cowardice for too long.

It's time for l'audace.

There's a principle in chess. And poker. It's a simple principle: Always be attacking. Always. (Well, except for the times you can't attack because your opponent has executed that principle better than you have.)

In chess, when you attack, you reduce the number of possible moves your opponent can make (because he must make some move in response to the attack) and it is only by attacking that even high-level players can predict opponent moves and play three or even seven moves ahead. Without an attack, you leave your opponent with dozens of possible moves each move, which then become thousands of possible combinations over three or five or seven successive movies.

But by always attacking, you reduce the number of responses to a mere two or three per move, and you can evaluate which among them looks like the best response from the opponent.

In Poker, as they say, your two best moves in almost any situation are to 1, raise the bet, or 2, fold the hand. Calling is weak and passive and will lose you money. But if you make decisive moves -- fold a hand and put an end to the bleeding, or raise an opponent's bet and make him decide whether he wants to match the bet or just fold the hand -- you give yourself more chances to win (or, in the case of folding -- to lose cheaply).

The Republican Party is a party of weak poker players who believe in calling bets forever -- weak, passive play that never puts the question to the opponent -- and even of suddenly folding a hand when there's not even a bet at stake.

They call this "being reasonable," and they are very proud to string together dozens, sometimes hundreds of very reasonable defeats all in a row.

(From Wikipedia: Who Dares, Wins (Latin: Qui audet adipiscitur; ... French: Qui ose gagne; Italian: Chi osa vince; Portuguese: Quem ousa, vence; German: Wer wagt, gewinnt) is a motto made popular by the British Special Air Service. It is normally credited to the founder of the SAS, Sir David Stirling.)

BTW Wikipedia also included the Greek but there's no way this system is going to print Greek characters. But I'll include thrasos, a concept explained to me by Columbo in For Your Eyes Only.

Trump certainly has thrasos and l'audace. It's very much in doubt if he has the corresponding virtue of caution, but I don't think you can really have an abundance of both. I think your personality is set to either favor risk-taking, doubling-down, and aggression, or it's set to favor risk-aversion and mitigation, withdrawal from confrontation, and passivity.

The cucks kinda-sorta suggest that they're just as capable of showing some thrasos, some balls, some daring in the appropriate moment, while being all judicious and cautious the rest of the time, but I don't see any evidence that they can suddenly steel themselves and become something other than what they are. I see them being too scared to make bold and controversial moves all the time.

So, does anyone think the risk-averse, cautious cuck crew will suddenly show some thrasos and endorse this move? Or do you think they'll go with their usual timorous instincts and shy away from anything big and bold and likely to upset their leftist Twitter palz too much?

Likewise, I think people tend to either be very sensitive to other people's feelings about them -- in which case they are well-mannered, polite in disagreement, and generally "nice," but at the expense of not being assertive, combative when necessary, and ruthless in pursuit of their own interests.

And on the other hand, the people who do not really care about the opinions of others have much comfort in being assertive, combative, and unashamed in pursuing their own interests. They come off like assholes, yes, because the opposite of "nice and solicitous of the opinions of others" is "asshole who doesn't care what other people think."

I think this party is controlled by a lot of people who want to be "nice" all the time and not nearly enough people who can be assholes when needed.

I definitely do not believe that anyone can be "nice" 99% of the time but then go into Super-Asshole mode for just those few occasions that require it. I think your default setting controls your behavior almost all of the time.

So with Trump, with a lot of what the cucks call "flaws," I don't see them as flaws. I see them as different personality settings which yes, do have downsides associated with them -- but upsides as well, and further, I see the crap the cucks want ("let's be nice to all of our enemies and pretend the goals of the political contest are to show Who Is More Morally Upstanding rather than winning any tangible policy conflicts") has significant downsides too.

I don't believe you can Be Both. I don't think you can be All Things to All People. I don't think you can reinvent yourself moment-to-moment like Madonna doing costume changes in a 1985 show.

We may contain multitudes, but we don't contain an infinite number of personality permutations.

Nice is good. Nice is nice. It's nice to be nice.

But nice is also passive and frequently ineffectual. If your goal is just to be nice, then you can satisfy your goal of being nice by being nice.

But what if being nice is not your primary goal, or even a goal your rank very highly? What if your political goals are political in nature -- in that you want political victories from politcial contests, and not merely personal victories, like showing I'm Better Than They Are or Look At My Principles, Aren't They Shiny and Smooth from Never Actually Being Brought Into Any Fight?

We seem to have a major argument about what it is we actually want from conservatism in this moment. Some of us want actual tangible political conservative victories; some of us just want the personal validation of feeling like we did the Nice thing and lost like gentlemen (with our principles still pristine and without a single ding or scuff because we never risked them in a fight).

For the latter sort of person: Why even pretend you're involved in politics? If all you want is self-validation, buy some Tony Robbins tapes used on eBay and just play them to yourself every night. You don't have to pretend to be involved in politics when all you want is reassurance that you're a Really Good Person.

Just tell yourself You're A Really Good Person, like mantra. (Most of you guys seem to already do this; many NeverTrumper articles are about no other topic than the claimed Goodness of the writer.)

Why pretend this is in service of a political struggle, when it's obvious to everyone else (and it surely must at least be becoming obvious to you) that the "game" you are playing is simply to acquire I'm a Good Person chits.

Your actual fight isn't political; it's personal and psychological. You just want to tell people how very, very Virtuous you are, and you want your fellow Virtue-Mongers to emotionally validate you and tell you how virtuous you are in return for assuring them that they're virtuous.

Why dress this up with the pretense it's about policy, even remotely? The huge number of complete flips on "Eternal Sacred Conservative Dogma" that you guys have executed to show your Virtue proves that you're entirely uninterested in policy or political outcomes.

If we set up a site, call it The HugBox, where you could all publicly congregate and write endless, wordy posts about how virtuous you are, would you agree to stay in The Hugbox and leave the rest of us who still think things like But Gorsuch and But the Economy still matter alone?

BTW: They're not even "nice," of course. They just think that rumor-spreading and other indirect forms of attack are "better," somehow, than direct confrontation.

And they're only nice and respectful to those they believe are worthy of respect -- a group which mostly includes (surprise, surprise!) their leftwing twitter pals and MSNBC buddies.

Their colleagues at National Review? Not so much, it turns out.

But I will leave these immoral monsters with their delusions intact if they just get the fuck out of my party.

This.

Almost every part of the economy has been re-thought and re-structured. Except universities; they retain essentially the same structure they've had since the Middle Ages, when the first ones were founded. (Salerno, 9th century, IIRC. Oxford was a newcomer in the 12th century. New College, Oxford was founded in the 1300s.)

Universities are LONG overdue for re-thinking and restructuring.

It may or may not have a salutary effect. But not nearly enough of one.

But the real problem is, unlike other debt, student loans are protected from bankruptcy discharge.

As long as the government encourages every last person to go to school, and then protects lenders from those consequences, they'll keep on making the bad loans forever and ever.

However, making the colleges partially responsible for loan payments, paired with cutting research funding, will cause actual pain to them.

And that's cool with me.

The savings would be in the billions , which should allow the colleges to cut costs.

72 Ace, in poker there's a principle called fold equity.

Basically, it means that your odds are better than they appear when you bet into an opponent because there's a chance he might just give up the hand.

It becomes particularly important in end-of-game play when the blinds are high. At some point when you have around 10x the Big Blind in chips, the only moves are to push all your chips in or fold. That's it.

The best way to help would be to make college affordable. The government, however, has done what it always does when trying to solve an "affordability crisis" regardless of what it is: they threw money at the problem.

More dollars chasing a similar number of goods always has the same, predictable result: inflation. That the government thinks this *won't* happen is proof of their madness.

I put it on a prior thread, but none of this is the correct answer to the college costs bubble. Eliminate any and all government funding for the universities (at least federally, states can do what they want). Make student loans dischargeable in bankruptcy again. Put the lenders *and* the borrowers back on the hook.

Students will look at the huge interest rates and increasingly say, "no bid." Lenders will look at the titanic risks and increasingly say, "no bid." The colleges will drop their prices and trim out the bullshit. A lot of colleges will go bankrupt, allowing them to be cleansed and reopened by others.

Just quit giving colleges and students pallets of cash and stop giving lenders special treatment and this problem will solve itself. This wouldn't solve the problem of universities being intellectual vacuums, of course, but it will solve the affordability problem.

82 Excellent but still a quibble. The cucks aren't "nice" at all. You approached this but didn't quite get there. They solicit votes and audiences on the basis of professed beliefs or policy positions they want implemented. Then they are "nice" to the other side and fold. In fact, when "their" side calls them on this, they become quite nasty to "their" side.

They are liars, frauds, grifters and whores.

A quarter-century ago, a bank set up a table at Sproul Plaza at the University of California, Berkeley, to distribute applications for cheap student-oriented credit cards.

A scandal ensured when it turned out that the bank processed the applications from engineering majors and other quantative majors, and threw out all the applications from liberal arts majors.

89 I thought of a similar idea. Create a class actions suit suing universities for awarding degrees in made up fields that have not science or scholarship like feminist and gay studies. Similarly, I think the amount made available via student loans be tied to the average salary for which that major gets paid. It is insane to loan an 18-24 year-old $150,000 to get a degree that pays $28,000. Like getting a $500,000 loan on a $200,000 house.

92 I've hammered this to death here, but the main problem is that in the past there was a shared set of unwritten rules of polite behavior, things which One Did Not Do or be shunned, lose power and influence, be ostracized, etc. It cost you to act in certain ways. Some of those rules were a bit arbitrary or nonsense, but they were all shared and understood, rules that were not laws per se, but simply behavioral and societal agreements.

The left has abandoned all of these, considering them weak or something which interfered with their goals. They have ignored all the unwritten rules for a while now and pay no price for it.

In a setting where only one side abides by these rules, then the side who does not, wins. They conquer by breaking the rules and violating everything for maximum personal advantage no matter what damage it does to society, honesty, honor, or truth. The lasting damage, they figure, can be fixed because they're smarter, better, more enlightened, and gosh darn it, people like them.

As long as the GOP continues to follow the unwritten rules which are no longer part of society while the Democrats do not, they will continue to suffer. This has nothing to do with fairness or propriety. Honor and propriety require both sides to carry out the system; when one does not, you're no longer required to be honorable toward them.

Propriety only has meaning or significance in a system where the rules are followed: then its proper. If they are abandoned, its no longer proper.

Until the GOP understands this, they will keep being the left's bitch. Trump gets this. They do not.

104 I would suggest that Trump ask the Dept of Education to cut about two thirds of the regulations on colleges. That would free colleges to get rid of thousands of redundant adminstrators, such as diversity departments, women's departments, minority deparments, etc. In 2019, you shouldn't need adminstrators to hand hold minorities or women.

The savings would be in the billions , which should allow the colleges to cut costs.

Here's the problem: the regulations are the minority part of the problem. Colleges *want* these legions of administrators, programs, facilities, subsidized student organizations, etc. It's how they virtue-signal to each other, ensure that the spaces within their walls is consistent and free of wrongthink, and entice students with all their great stuff.

Cutting off the money solves this problem. I am never opposed to regulatory reform, but the colleges love this stuff.

I graduated with $52k in debt. My total debt after my first year out of school (because I was stupid and bought too much car when I totaled my old one, plus a small amount of CC debt) was $63k.

I lived in constant terror of an emergency or a layoff. I saved enough to get me through a 3-month unemployment and then tackled the debt. It was like dragging around a millstone. I didn't change my living standard for years, even as I started earning more money. I did nothing but pay it off.

It was worth it, but it is absolutely terrifying and I was fortunate enough and smart enough to get a real job. If I hadn't, if I was one of these sociologist baristas, I'd still have that millstone and it would be bigger and heavier.

When I was going into school (I don't know if it's still this way, I suspect it is), student loans were pitched from all corners - from the lenders to the guidance counselors to the teachers to the colleges to your friend's parents - as a "good" kind of debt. Like a mortgage. It's an investment in your future. Not at all reckless like a credit card. This is a lie. A pernicious, dangerous lie.

True. But the percentage of health care dollars that go to physicians remains a small part of the total. Even if you cut physician fees to 0, health care expenditures will only drop by 17%. 83% of the money goes to everything but the physician. That number is likely smaller in 2018 and 2019. And despite the continuing rise in spending, hospitals in rural Texas continue to BK almost weekly.

Like many here, I've got an ability for taking standardized tests (it's partly about understanding how they're written) and also like many here, I'm fairly well read, and I've made a standing bet with some people that I can take a standardized final exam (multiple choice) in any modern humanities course they want to name, without ever having gone to a class or cracked a book, and I could score at least a 70.

It's not because I'm so smart, it's because those tests are all so banal and predictable.

160 While it is true that for society to function well, such rules must exist, and be overwhelmingly observed, we don't live in such a society. And the only way to get back there is to make it painful for them to continue flauting them.

Right, this is the tricky part, enforcing the system until they squeal, then going back to the way things need to be; can we make it back there again? How much does it take for them to learn? Its like war: if you do not fully and completely defeat an enemy, you'll have to fight them again. But in the process of fully defeating them, you have to take care that you aren't becoming the evil you are trying to destroy.

But the Trans-Conservatives simply don't think things are that bad. They like the way things are. I increasingly think that's the problem. The believe "Hey, everything is great. You guys are messing it up. Stop it!"

And for them everything is great. They are wealthy and powerful in this system. They probably are treated well, for the most part. Its every once in a while they find out the way the left is, with Kavanaugh for example. He was One Of Them and was treated wrong. They reacted very badly to that experience.

We're tasting that every day out here, but they aren't.

The counseling office at my high school (public, decent school, but not the swankiest in the city by a long shot) was basically there for you to choose a school and a major. Unless you were going straight into the military, it was assumed that you were going to college. I don't think there was any trades program.

Posted by: nerdygirl at March 12, 2019 05:33 PM (+lVUW)

For K-12, definitely.

For universities, I have mixed feelings. Faculty members can benefit from protection for being fired for controversial views. Think, e.g., Arthur Jensen, whom Berkeley would have fired in a heartbeat for his publications on IQ and race. Of course, tenure also protects leftist agitators, but a better way of dealing with that problem is to can entire departments (when tenure does not apply).

The other aspect is, as I have seen, STEM faculty sometimes just burn out. They worked their asses off to get a faculty position, and then to get tenure, after which they go for a while longer before just gradually burning out entirely on research. (Not to be confused with laziness.) Some of them focus on teaching, or on writing textbooks, while some go into administration,* but firing them seems a bit harsh, much like cutting off veterans after their service would be.

Now it must be said, some just do f-all, but they're generally held in contempt by their colleagues, which has to hurt.

It can be worth it. For the right major, a change in prospects, whatever - it is not *always* a bad choice. It was and it wasn't for me. I studied a trade, but I ended not working in it for very long because I couldn't afford my student loans doing that work - though my secondary skills I acquired at college did help me get what is now my career.

The problem I see on the demand side of the equation is that every voice I heard was telling me that student debt was good, totally worth it, and essential and that it isn't really something to worry about.

McConnell and Ryan managing to do almost nothing on Trump's - and the electorate's indicated - priority of returning rule of law and common sense to borders and immigration was not due to cowardice of any sort. (Trump's near-complete failure to politicize and force these issues is a separate topic)

I know it's appealing/satisfying to some to ascribe cowardice - or worse ("cucked") - to these people, but I don't think it's true enough to even be relevant. Frankly, the movie is pretty problematic. In one scene featuring Brie Larson's eponymous character, Captain Marvel is seen flying around and beating up bad guys, which is pretty unrealistic. I mean, who's watching the kids? Did she call a babysitter? Did she leave them with the grandparents? It's all very confusing. And the film doesn't bother to explain this plothole you could pilot a Kree ship through in the slightest.

I've never heard one who understood the concept, viz., of deferred consumption.

But if you should encounter one, then ask him why Third World countries experience droughts, famines, floods, etc. See if he makes the connection. (I'm betting not.)

Answer: lack of capital to make the requisite investments in infrastructure. Instead they live on a hand-to-mouth subsistence basis.

This may be bigger than they intended.

219 going to college is better than not going to college, so long as you study something useful.

At the current prices, I don't agree. And at the currrent quality of education, I think its plainly untrue. It SHOULD be. College ought to be a place where people learn how to think -- not WHAT to think but the tools to think for themselves, and the understanding of great minds before them to arm themselves to do so. It should give a broad higher education in a fundamental array of fields such as science, medicine, art, literature, mathematics, languages, history, and so on.

Armed with this, the leaders of tomorrow can be raised up and prepared for the challenges they'll face.

But college hasn't been about that for nearly 100 years now.

Yup. It's why I'm sympathetic to the youngsters who are calling for debt relief, and get annoyed with those on the right who sneer about kids going $100k into debt. 18-year-olds who've been told their entire lives by parents, teachers, the culture at large, that they have to go to college, no matter the cost, aren't exactly in the best position to make a rational decision on the matter.

If you didn't know the answer then try to use process of elimination.

If you don't know and need to guess he read off the percentages of when A,B,C or D is the correct answer.

If the answer is taking forever skip and do it at the end

Some people never got this advice.

223 The other aspect is, as I have seen, STEM faculty
sometimes just burn out. They worked their asses off to get a faculty
position, and then to get tenure, after which they go for a while longer
before just gradually burning out entirely on research. (Not to be
confused with laziness.)

I see your point, but I'd argue that if tenure didn't exist, the pressure on young professors would be less, because the university wouldn't be making an irrevocable decision, and so could lighten up a bit on the young'uns. Hence, less burnout.

This is something that should be taught in a basic finance course in high school.

Take out a multi-year loan, say a mortgage, and calculate how much that $X loan will cost you overall. Typically, at least 1.5 X.

Then ask students to figure out how much of your initial years' payments go to principal, and how much to interest.

Now THAT is eye-opening.

But at this point, if we could teach them real Americana and instill real work skills, pay them a little money, it would (potentially) be better than sending them to the death (by a thousand leftist cuts) camps, that our universities have become. College leaves so many brainwashed and deep in debt, captive to the Supreme State ... I blame the hippies.

But that is why we need 50 million more Hondurans, to do all dirty work so our youth can be enslaved to leftist dogma.

Minimize the number of (govt) sources for Student Loans, which IS a 'third party pay' system. (...which incidentally helped to wreck health care...besides flooding HC with 'zero payers' (e.g.-illegals, formerly institutionalized mental patients... now the homeless)).

^^^When 'somebody else' is paying for it, colleges have little to no incentive to exercise control over costs.

P.S. -- Ban govt loans to non-STEM degree-seekers... no more subsidized "-studies" BS. Want a BA in Intersectional Lesbian Literature? Fine.. do it on your own (or Daddy's) dime, cupcake, not mine.

Because there's very little lender risk. Student loans are non-dischargeable in bankruptcy. The lender might not get paid back quickly, but they get to hound the student for life if needed, including social security and the estate.

They won't get all of the recapitalized interest, of course, but they will get their principal and a lot more back over time.

You need an objective basis for doing this, so here it is:

Charge true, fully-burdened costs for each degree, after taking into account the overheads brought in by the faculty of that department.

STEM departments typically bring in the lion's share of overheads (on research grants). Social science departments bring little, and humanities departments bring in nothing.

So that would provide a natural mechanism for adjusting student loan risk.

I know this is sarcasm, but the answer is probably "less than now."

Since Republicans and Democrats are actually the same people wearing different vestments (for the most part) but one side is ostensibly on "your team," it makes it harder to go to war because it is bad to make war on "your team."

This gives the Uniparty a big check.

360 Why isn't student loan risk a function of the the degree? Easy money for EE, hard money for art history
Posted by: Jean at March 12, 2019 06:11 PM (25Dt7)

You need an objective basis for doing this, so here it is:

Charge true, fully-burdened costs for each degree, after taking into account the overheads brought in by the faculty of that department.

STEM departments typically bring in the lion's share of overheads (on research grants). Social science departments bring little, and humanities departments bring in nothing.

So that would provide a natural mechanism for adjusting student loan risk.
Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara

No, I mean the other side. The cost of money to the student - the availability and interest - on the loans. Base it on likelihood of repayment. Just like every other loan.

Then, charge more for the grifters in the departments that can't support themselves.

Funny you mention this. I was talking to two of my younger brothers, both also over 29. They were having a conversation on their cell phones, and one mentioned that they were thinking of going to Tahiti or the South Seas somewhere on vacation. It was a joke, because neither of them has that on their top 500 list of things to do.

Later that evening, pop up ads appeared on Tahiti and other vacation trips when they surfed the internet, on devices other than the phones they used.

Both of them. And neither had EVER searched for such a topic.

I talked to both of them separately, and both mentioned this to me casually. They have no reason to lie.

To avoid "awkward situation/vote" for Trump.

WTFFFFFF?

This WH appears dead-set on not achieving its key policy goals by not doing anything to defeat its biggest enemy - parts of the GOP.

There's suddenly an urgent need to amend the law when dozens of nat'l emergencies, some of long duration, are in existence, NONE of them remotely as important or pertinent to national security as our own f***ing border and ability to control who enters the country? None of these declarations having attracted the least attention before? It would be awkward for *Trump* to force the useless Senate GOP to vote on something, when it's avoided any big votes for 2 years while Trump's/the country's agenda has languished?

Let the Senate vote. If they're idiotic enough to vote the wrong way, veto the f***ing resolution. No way they over-ride. And - AND - (fanfare) - what do you know, you'll have GOP incumbents ID'ing themselves as priority targets for removal, preferably by primary.

_______________

Yeah, like it would be impossible for a white person to teach African American history. It's not as if any AA's (or Mexicans or Puerto Ricans or muzzies, etc.) have ever taught a history they and their ancestors weren't personally involved in, right?

These students are also lazy. Despite their histrionics, they are not being denied "access" to their history. Don't want to take a history class taught by a white person? Fine, there's an abundance of resources for you to tap on your own. You can find and read all sorts of books about black history written by blacks, hispanic history written by hispanics, etc., and you can also find websites where you and others who look just like you can discuss those books -- without getting any white cooties.

Of course, that would require some initiative and work on the part of the complaining students, and we all know these pampered princes aren't going to go for that. They want their lefty indoctrination spoon fed to them, by the victimologist of their choice, at somebody else's expense.

If you know your hand is best, for instance holding two Kings and a King comes in the flop, then simply calling a bet can entice an opponent to overextend and piss even more of their chips away to you thinking that they will bluff you out.

Playing possum is sometimes advantageous in that it gives your opponent a false sense of superiority.

these student loans are the most subprime, no income verification, no ability to repay, defaulted on loans ever. why should they be exempt from normal lending regulations.

at least with subprime real estate loans you got a house. with these, you get a degree in shit studies. and it's been dumbed down to high school level, so you're really paying for shit that taxpayers already paid for.

443 DaveA, there's a lot more going on than just donors. That is, things are even worse than you imply.

Was away all day and missed the post on the college admissions thing.

Happy to see in the comments here, and so far unanimously in my few personal interactions about it, many whose first reaction is "huh? who cares? how about enforcing important laws?".

As if college admissions is some pure and holy institution untainted by any impropriety. I think I even heard the prosecutor, in a radio snippet, unintentionally mocking his own crusade by saying "see, this isn't like a wealthy person donating a building to help his kid's chances at admission, this is about fraud". English needs new terms, even new concepts, for the heights of breath-taking unintentional self-parody being pioneered by what pass for public servants in the US.

I have the added bonus of never having heard the names of the actors before, or of course caring who they were/are. Guess this makes it a sub-non-story.

Posted by: Duke Lowell

All student debt should be collateralized with some current marketable asset (not future earnings) that the bankruptcy court can liquidate, otherwise discharge is meaningless to the debt holder - right now student debt is junk status. And the Feds need to get out of the junk debt that student loans are, like now.

512 Thanks. I was going for welcoming while not even mentioning race as part of the discussion. "

Yes, the inclusion of race in the original letter is odd, since it shouldn't ever be part of a discussion like this. It's not necessarily a red flag, more of a yellow one, since there are people who find this the most important identifier about themselves. Still, it's grounds for caution.

(possibility exists that it could be someone fishing for a race insensitive response, for reasons unknown)

Why not just show up for a Sunday service instead and see for themself? Yeah, something sounds "off." I've learned to trust that intuition over the years.

539 The Progressives run on winning, on Progressing their agenda.

The GOP has, for my entire life run on an agenda of slowing down the Progressives.

Not winning. Not actually limiting government. Not decreasing spending.

Just slowing down the Left's wins.

Obamacare is a prime example. They could have killed it when they had both houses and the Presidency, instead it is still law.

And they will once again run on repealing Obamacare.

Because if they actually solved that problem, they think they would not have anything to run on.
