30 civil rights groups say the hate crime bill passed by the Indiana Senate isn't a hate crime bill at all.
The Anti-Defamation League and the Human Rights Campaign keep track of hate crime laws in all 50 states. Indiana and the four other states without a law make up what Governor Holcomb has labeled "the naughty list," and much of the debate at the statehouse has centered on whether a law which didn't specify targeted victim groups would be enough to get the state off the list.
Until now, the ADL hadn't weighed in directly. But a letter to Holcomb, House Speaker Brian Bosma and Senate President Pro Tem Rod Bray makes clear the groups would still list Indiana as not having a hate crime law if it passes a Senate bill with just a general reference to "bias. The groups say that version "could actually cause harm." They say the lack of a list would "marginalize communities of color" and minority religions.
Bosma won't comment directly on the ADL letter. He says he's focused on passing a bill that gets Indiana off the list. Since January, Bosma has consistently advocated a bill which doesn't include a list of groups, but goes a little further than the Senate version, allowing judges to impose longer sentences for crimes motivated by bias against any "characteristic, belief, practice or association." The ADL letter doesn't address that proposal.
Every state with a hate crime law except Utah includes a list of covered groups, and the Utah Senate this week passed a bill adding a list. Utah prosecutors, and the ADL letter, say the current law has proven unenforceable.
Besides Utah, every state hate crime law lists race, religion and ethnicity as potential hate-crime targets. 10 other categories show up in at least one state law.

1) Hitler was a globalist, too. He wanted to control the whole globe divided up between the Axis powers.
2) Didn't the Soviets effectively end unions too, because once the "workers" controlled the means of production, then there was no need to have unions representing labor. Labor and Ownership were in theory one and the same.

Anyway - these two guys are in WWII. I think the guys - I think one was a WASP from the northeast, and the other was a Native American from the southwest. Very different. I recall lots of snow, bet it was The Bulge. And they're separated from their unit. So, you know, just a stroll in the park - with snow, sub-zero temps, and guys all around who will kill you on sight.
They run into a German, couple quick shots, and Jerry's done. Only, funny thing - Jerry's carrying a suitcase. Of course they open it up, and - it looks like a treasure chest. Those look like diamonds, those look like rubies. Gold? And they kind of laugh, and say, why would Jerry be carrying a suitcase full of costume jewelry down the road? Yeah - why WOULD he?
Now they're thinking fast, because, look, the priority is NOT GETTING KILLED. They realize if they do happen to survive and reach their own lines, and they're carrying this suitcase, it will just be snagged by the superiors, whatever the hell it is. That's no option. So - they bury it. They try to find some landmarks where they bury it, but again, it ain't exactly their top priority.
They do get back, and eventually survive, and go back home. They have good lives. And they stay in touch. And in those phone calls once a year, they always have a laugh about Jerry's suitcase.
Well, the years go by, and the world learns the details of how Nazi rat bastards looted Jewish jewelry and valuables like that, and the once a year call laughs get a little more serious. You don't think...it couldn't possibly be.
Finally, and I think this was in the '80's, they come to a mutual decision - that stuff could have been real, and we need to do something.
But that presents a dilemma. The easiest thing to do would be tell the media, it's a feel-good story, the government flies them over, they find the stash, and....the Belgian government takes it.
But the alternative is they go over, get a Motel 6 room in Bastogne, and start wandering the countryside - with a shovel. Maybe the land's been developed - it may be under a strip mall or apartment complex. Maybe they can't even find the site. How much do they really remember about the landmarks?
But this is what they do. And, after about a week I think, one of them says, "hey - I think I recognize that tree." And there's the stone wall, and there's a creek. And they dig, and there's the suitcase.
I don't recall how, but they get the loot back to the states, and someone who knows what he's talking about, looks at it and confirms it's real treasure, and from Jews. (I assume from markings, etc.)
The two guys get some sort of agent or agency to work for them, and they tell them, monetize this. Sell it. But you are forbidden to tell anyone where it came from. And you are to use the money to establish a foundation, which will provide grants to Jewish causes. And you are forbidden from ever telling a recipient where the money came from.
I thought that was pretty cool. Obviously, kudos to both guys, but there was something - uplifting? - about this Native American guy standing up for European Jews. IIRC, as he'd gotten older, he'd gotten more serious about Native American spirituality, and there was something about that that made him feel - an obligation? - to a people that had been persecuted like that for their faith.

Nazis took over Germany for a couple of reasons.
First, the Treaty of Versailles was so punitive and abusive Germans were basically filled with rage and humiliation that they wanted someone, ANYONE to fight back over it rather than curl up and whimper.
Second, German culture in the cities was getting... really corrupt and disgusting, like the worst of modern big cities. Completely debautched and foul. Average Germans were pretty conservative and religious and saw that happening with horror and disgust.
Third, Germany was very proud and really awesome, then suddenly because of a war they lost were being treated like the lowest place on earth, and pride called for someone to stand up for the nation and be strong.
Hitler gave them that someone, and because of clever marketing and tricks like marauding gangs on the streets he magically cleaned up when taking power, people liked what they saw. For a while.
The left isn't 100% totally wrong when they see parallels between Hitler and Trump in this and ONLY this sense: he's the personification of a response by the average person to humiliation, frustration, and horrors being shoved down their throats.
But that doesn't mean Trump = Hitler, it just means the left went too far (again) and people reasonably responded.

I'm working at training a Millennial kid and he's disturbingly normal. I would oppose any such declaration of emergency, but I could also conceive of situations where it might have to happen. I've read that too. There is little research that backs that up. It's simply a theory to "normalize" Yeshua into a cultural movement.
There is a curious phrase in scripture that our eyes skip over and kind of blend into our own ways. But the phrase "Rabbi with authority" was a specific phrase. So when the Gospels say Jesus taught as "one who had authority", that means something very specific. It means that he taught as a Rabbi who was allowed to judged blessed enough to say new things. That's why the Pharisees asked him "From where did you get your authority (to create teachings)?" And Jesus spars and hints by asking "From where did John get his authority?"

The Pharisees and others of the tribes clearly could make choices against God. I believe even in the OT there was also "heaven" for the Gentile ... resurrection of the just.

I always wondered that a gas motor designed to be strictly an electrical generator would be more efficient than a gas engine that also mechanically drove the car.

Tesla's are ubiquitous in CA bay area, it could outnumber things like Prius and Camry. Kids could play a new version of slug bug, except there's like 3 colors. Honestly, I could drive half a mile to the grocery store and see 6. I was behind some clown in an S model with 'GRN WE R' license plate. Watched him breeze through 2 stops (brakes apparently are an expensive option - I've mentioned this before here) and then he drove for 10 minutes on the freeway with his left signal going. Even when he got off, his left signal was going. I hate these smug bastards. Oh, and I counted 2 more stopping at Trader Joe's and the 2/10 mile home from there.

That is what made no sense to me. The way I understood it, the Volt ran a gas motor, but did not recharge the battery- so it was like a less useful Prius.

Carnot-cycle engines are inherently at their most efficient when running under constant full design load (although piston engines are better than most types -- turbines suck rocks under partial load, which is why we don't have turbine cars anywhere but in Batman comics).
When an engine is charging a battery, it runs at design load until the battery is charged, than it shuts off. When it's driving the car in stop and go traffic, the load is all over the place.
It's way more efficient than a stop and go traffic situation, and would be a no-brainer if batteries weren't both expensive and heavy.

Every time you convert energy from one form to another there are losses. On the other hand that is how a diesel-electric locomotive works, so I agree it is an interesting question.
I'l long wondered if it would be possible to save gas by having the breaking system store kinetic energy in a flywheel instead of wasting it as heat. The stored energy could then be used to get the car moving again after a stop. Unfortunately I'm not a mechanical engineer so I really only know enough to be dangerous.

I owned a 2006 Prius - 224K miles, never once had a single thing go wrong with it.
Traded it in for a 2014 Prius - 97K miles in 3-years, never once had a problem with it. Traded it in for a Hybrid Rav-4 which, 16-months later, already has about 48K miles.
Mrs. DocJ owned a 2005 Prius (197K miles, no repairs even with an accident and 10-years on it), owns a 2015 Prius with 79K miles
That's a whole lot of miles without ever once needing to take it in for a repair. Just saying.

However if the engine-driving-battery thing becomes a commonplace, I WOULD expect turbines to appear in cars, because if you DO have the near constant load, turbines are better than piston engines (which is why they're used in planes).

I think that's mostly due to the scaling factors of having a massive drive shaft and transmission compared to just having some heavy electrical cables. Above a certain size, wires beat shafts (especially if you have a bunch of wheel sets that you want to drive from the same engine --- trannys, differentials, and such start to get complicated, heavy, and unreliable).

Ah loves me my Tacoma! Had a Dodge Ram before that. Gotta lot of miles off it, and it was a pretty good truck, but I got tired of it after the heater quit and the drivers side window fell off its track and got itself lost down inside the door.
Actually the heater quitting wasn't all the way bad, one night I had to drive about 2 hours in the middle of the night and I know I would have fallen asleep, except it was 30 degrees inside the cab of that truck for the entire drive.

I routinely see Prius taxis. Painted yellow and everything.
I have no problem with hybrids, electric, and stuff like that as it relates to cars and their tech, but I like cars and tech. I'm not very fond of subsidies and cronyism, which is where most of my teasing comes from.
I also don't care much for door handles that can't be opened while you're burning to death, but that's probably just a personal preference. Toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe.

Had a Dodge 3/4 ton, it was rip roaring strong.
The motor, the drive train all strong and hot and lovely. Oh, and the best bench seat of any vehicle ever.
However, doors fell off, heater cores leaked, glove box door fell off, and on and on.

Lexus has had both front wheel bearings fail (at 100k), but the repair cost was minimal, now I am at 150k and I expect to get at least 200k before I get bored (and will probably go for 300k). Mechanic said he thinks Lexus screwed up and used chinese steel in their bearing manufacture.
The transmission in my GMC truck blew out at 75k.

I bought it used from a dealer. I noticed right away that the emergency brake light went on from time to time for no reason. After doing some research, I found out that it was a well known problem, the Anti lock Break system/computer is failing. I was beyond medieval but took it to the dealer. They confirmed the internet info. It could cost me up to $2k to replace this sensor/computer. So far everything seems to be working other than the signs that something is wrong.

I was looking at a Peugeot - what was it? A 505 back in the mid-eighties? I bought a Porsche. Now, I'd only get Japanese - and their styling has gotten a whole bunch better. My freaking infiniti has had zip go wrong save for the air bag recall. Had it for 11 years now. Ex had a Lexus, think she got another after her accident. They just go.
Know a couple of people with RR's, and yeah. I say the same thing with BMW's, great as long as it's not your primary ride. Know a lot of realtors (my biz) and most feel they need to drive RR's, Merc's, Audi's etc. One gal only gets Merc for lease, the thing is absolute garbage by the time it's 2 years old with 75k on the odo. I'd feel awful buying a $150k car to have it be worth barely $40k 4 years later.

Well for now that is my plan. I have been told by everyone that only a dealer can fix this issue and the dealer says it will cost me a thousand and then maybe a second thousand but he can't tell until I pay the first thousand lol. But it is not funny. As for now, I am just driving it and hoping for the best.

Realtor dude I know, and who I've used to buy and sell many homes over the years drives a Camry. A pretty old one too. And he's one of the few real estate peeps I've met who is honest about real estate. Like he'll say - as a buyer's agent - don't buy this house, it's over priced or once he even said, wait 6 months and you'll get some better deals. He's honest as shit and really humble. And doesn't care about the car he drives to impress people.
And the guy is also a machine (no pun intended), he is always closing deals. He's really good at what he does and people like me keep going back as repeat clients.
Point of the story...nobody gives a fuck what you drive. Be honest with your customers, do a good job and it's all you need to succeed.

the light is weird. it only goes on once in a while and always goes off if you turn off the engine. It may go one every few days or every two weeks.

replacement. They're reliable as hell, except for that flaw. And the

and of course mine has a belt, and the dealer wants to replace that too. But OTHER than that, it is a nice truck, very clean.

The fuel pump was replaced under warranty. Otherwise, only tires, brake
pads, oil changes, and routine services. 177k miles. Best truck I've
ever had.

I am with you, be careful about upgrading. My Explorer was older than that and I only had to fix the cooling system over time. I would still be driving it if someone didn't try to steal it and total it in the insurance company's eyes. These new trucks are full of computers and sensors that can cost you. I still don't see the real need.
