Bruegel Cripples.JPG

The Cripples
Pieter Bruegel the Elder

He is one of those artists I almost never see, but am amazed anew when I finally crawl out of my art bubble and take a gander at some of his stuff. When I think "Dutch Art," I almost never think about their fine renaissance painters because one hundred years later there is the Golden Age of Dutch painting, complete with the 800 lb gorilla: Rembrandt.

70 Of the five people depicted in the main group, I count three double amputees (below knee), one who appears to have two intact legs, and on standing but with indistinguishable leg status.

The three amputees all have some type of apparently wood kneepad type devices for walking,. The one in the middle has wooden peg extensions on his "prostheses", either to gain height or perhaps to adjust for a leg length discrepancy.

They do not appear to have limb deformities (such as clubfoot or phocomelia) so I wonder if they are war veterans, crippled by lower extremity injuries.

71 You're right about Pieter Breugel being overshadowed by the later Dutch artists. Even in my own studies for my degree, I can't remember being taught him much, maybe once. His "Hunter in the Snow" is what is taught, when he is discussed.

He is definitely discussed more at the higher levels, but I concentrated on other areas.

Good point, you are likely correct. And at the same time most reasons for an amputation (e.g. wound infection => gangrene) would be unilateral as well.

I suppose they could all have had a lower limb wasting condition such as severe spina bifida, or possibly severe clubfoot and had an amputation for that reason, but generally clubfooted children before modern medical techniques would have just kept the deformed feet and walked either with crutches or on the sides of the deformed feet.

So, in the absence of anyone with real knowledge of the painting, 'tis a mystery.

....

Early Dutch handicapped and crippled individials were forced to sell corn dogs to receive alms outside of Mass.

The Dutch did not want to encourage a welfare mentality and required beggars to work for their alms.

I have doubts majors in the Dem party are "begging " her to run. My guess is either Cory Booker or Kamala Harris ends up the nominee.
Clinton cannot stop hinting she might run. It keeps her in the spotlight and allows her to collect fees for speaking engagements, whether from the media, colleges, etc.

And I"m not counting Biden in either. He appears to poll well, which the Communists will use as a template for Booker's statements, comments, etc. But no way will they allow him on the ticket as he will be pushing 79 if elected, and the young communists in the Dem party are not going to allow it.

And so it begins, the 9 month long begging for Hilary to run while she
demurs over and over before finally relenting to the unprecedented call
for her to run for president AGAIN, for the third time!

LOL maybe she can break the glass ceiling on number of failed attempts.

Posted by: The guy who says "And so it begins" at March 06, 2019 09:57 AM (ymnmz)

I have doubts majors in the Dem party are "begging " her to run. My
guess is either Cory Booker or Kamala Harris ends up the nominee.

Clinton cannot stop hinting she might run. It keeps her in the
spotlight and allows her to collect fees for speaking engagements,
whether from the media, colleges, etc.

And I"m not counting Biden in either. He appears to poll well, which
the Communists will use as a template for Booker's statements,
comments, etc. But no way will they allow him on the ticket as he will
be pushing 79 if elected, and the young communists in the Dem party are
not going to allow it.

349 Blu-ray.com review of Captain Marvel:

"Captain Marvel" gets pedestrian quickly, and not helping the cause is Larson in the lead role. It's not inspired casting, coming up short in the authority department, finding Carol's scenes of pure power lackluster, while her line-readings are curiously zombified. Larson's a capable actress, but she seems bizarrely uncomfortable here, unable to settle in and give the effort the cinematic strength it deserves.

355 "Captain Marvel" gets pedestrian quickly, and not helping the cause is Larson in the lead role.

In Iceland they "eradicated" downs syndrome through continued aggressive prenatal testing and and abortion.

I often wonder what the false positive is on the testing that would allow for the 100% elimination of down's babies, or are they just killing them after they are born and calling it an abortion? Imagine that 2 or 3% of the "downs" babies are false positives, or that spontaneous miscarriages occur of healthy babies after the amniocentesis violates the womb.

469 That Captain Marvel review, ouch. That was painful to watch. Not because of the movie, but because of how desperately they were trying to tell the truth honestly about the film but avoid being hated and destroyed for not praising an SJW favorite.

They go so hard out of their way to praise Brie Larson's alleged acting genius -- which honestly I cannot comprehend or have missed somehow up to this point, seriously they try to make her out to be Katherine Hepburn and Meryl Streep x1000 -- and how much they keep saying it was entertaining, its really obvious that the film is a clunker and Brie is lousy. You can almost read their minds as they struggle to avoid saying it outright.

They literally praise EVERY OTHER ACTOR in the film, and cannot say a single positive thing about Brie. Then they start making claims about other movies that they didn't like so it sounds like they dislike boys too, so it doesn't sound sexist and... yeah it didn't work.

Particularly the part where they go into detail about how well crafted and presented Captain America was in his first movie then the guy claims that he didn't like it and didn't know who Cap was at the end of the review. Seee, we don't like white men too, please don't hate us!!!

"Her name is Sin-Ne-Mah, but the women call her Wears The Boots. She is crazy. She is probably a whore."
Sun-In-His-Hair thought. There were many in the council who were ugly, and old, and shrill, (and all those things and crazy, too) but a whore? He did not remember receiving counsel from such a one.
"Why do you dislike her," asked Sun-In-His-Hair.
"She has attracted the attention of our heir, Barron," she replied. "And it is an unhealthy, peculiar kind of attention."
"Boys," said Sun.
"She will prove to be a thorn," Fox replied. "Undo her."

As often is the case, I agree and disagree on 2001.

As a viewer, I find the opening monkey business boring. I find the ending 'room' sequence opaque.

It's 'about' things, I just don't terribly care what it's about. Human drama means more to me than allegory. That's why the middle, space, section works so well for me.

And HAL is clearly an antagonist. A murderous one, so that qualifies him as a villain to me. But I'll always side with humans over machines. Unless the machine is hot, good in bed and can clean the house.

479 Here's what going to happen with Democrats and the next election. None of the current declared candidates will win the primary. Democrats will find someone like McAullife who they believe is a stealth face they can use to once again divert people from their real agenda of baby murder, government run health care, higher taxes, illegal immigrant voting, Second Amendment stealing, green deal, antisemitic, America hating.

They will simultaneously continue to unconstitutionally use the powers of Congress for a political operation to try and damage the president. It's their basic intimidation tactic, only now using your tax money. They will float impeachment, even though they fooled idiot voters in the midterms by saying they would not.

It just might work because the GOP is feckless. They have done almost zero to promote the presidents actual accomplishments or engage in the local voting process. In fact, I'm not sure what the hell the RNC even does anymore. Especially since getting their asses handed to them in midterm states like California, where their GOTV failed in a spectacular fashion and their election lawyers look like buffoons.

Pretty much. I've just started a book on the German resistance to Hitler during WWII, and the author said that most of the information had been quashed or hidden after the war, and he had to hunt in old archives to find anything about the various resistance groups that were throughout Germany. 493 By the way, the newly elected Democrat Gov. of Michigan, Granholm 2.0, delivered a budget to the state legislature this week.

She wants to raise the gasoline tax in Michigan another 45 cents per gallon, she wants to repeal the pension tax( progressive tax on pensions and 401K distributions unpopular with seniors- who prior to it's enactment in 2011, paid zero state income taxes unless they had huge incomes from sales of assets) . To make up for the $320 M that repeal would cost, she wants to , wait for it, tax businesses!
Snyder, who was our R gov and term limited, had gotten through the R legislature tax cuts that made Michigan a friendlier place for businesses to start up. Or come back, as in the case of Chrysler Fiat.

And what does Whitman want to do with the imagined money she thinks taxing business out of the state will do?

You 've got it. Put it into education! Because we don't have enough indoctrination centers for Democrats in the state.

Our only bulwark against this crap is that we have a R majority legislature. Which doesn't inspire tons of confidence. One R congressperson did say the following." Whitman wants to raise taxes so high, so she can repave the roads that will help everyone wanting to leave Michigan have a smooth ride".

However, someone like McAuliffe (btw who I believe is very dirty from years with the Clinton Crime Family), paired with either the second biggest primary vote getter or another one bowing to the SJW crowd in their party, will be more formidable.
It's amazing how people treat the Democrats like they are dumb, and wait for them to fail, when history shows they are very tenacious, conniving, devious, insidious and cunning when it comes to elections.

You can blame religious organizations for the influx of Somali's. The government paid them to provide housing, transportation, etc. to bring hundreds of thousands of them to locales. So it was a win win, they got to do their feel good SJW programs, make money on it, and plunk down Somalis in the middle of communities where they don't assimilate.
The campus knife wielding Somali at Ohio State several years ago was here with his relatives on just such a program. Despite having been in the country for just 23 months, he managed to 'earn" a HS diploma, a 2 year diploma from a community college, and was enrolled at OSU, all expenses paid, before he decided to run over students on a campus street, jump out with a knife swinging. A campus cop shot him dead in front of his car only because he was within 1 minute of the asshole's location.

Lots of blame to go around for that one, starting with the Obama govt, churches, then the education system that values diversity way more than actual education and achieving standards.

566 I suspect a lot of the German resistance were Communists, and part of the deal of getting the Nazi sympathizers (werewolves and such) back in the fold after the war was the agreement that everyone was anti-communist.

Maybe they did a second story but the one I heard yesterday was mostly the children[/] of recently deceased elderly claiming that their parents were disappointed that they wouldn't get to see Evil Orange Man get his comeuppance.
