CNN's Brian "Tater" Stelter Claims Media Didn't Push Jussie Smollet Hoax

He claims the hoax was only pushed by celebrity outfits, politicians, activists, and "Twitter."

As John Nolte documents, that's yet another Huge Lie from the Truth-Tellers. The media routinely asserted that Smollet had been attacked -- despite the Chicago police leaking like sieves to anyone within a a ten mile radius that they had deep suspicions this was all bullshit.

I think that last fact has to be stressed: This was the perfect set-up for the media to finally get one right.

The story reeked of fabrication, and the police themselves were putting out the word to practically anyone who asked that they had very great doubts this was a real attack.

And yet the media still asserted that an attack happened, and still virtue-signaled up and down twitter -- and their own "news" shows, which now seem like afterthought additions to their twitter timelines-- how "disgusting" "America in 2019" is.

Appearing on CNN’s basement-rated New Day with co-hosts John Avlon and Alisyn Camerota on Monday, Stelter said of the Smollett case: "There was a rush to judgment, I think it was mostly in the celebrity press and among activists and among Twitter people. I think it was a really careful reporting by news organizations. But it all gets lumped in together at the end of the day."

It makes sense for Stelter to muddy the waters like this. After all, the Smollett hoax comes fresh on the heels of the media’s starring role in the Racist Covington High School Hoax, the Brett Kavanaugh Serial-Rapist Hoax, and most of all, the imploding Trump Colluded With Russia Hoax.

Unfortunately for Stelter, his shameless spin is easily exposed as such by countless tweets, headlines, and statements made by his fellow journalists and pundits -- including four high-profile staffers at CNN.

Let's start with videotape of a CNN anchor: "Absolutely despicable," said CNN's Brooke Baldwin on CNN Newsroom, "and this is America in 2019."

CNN anchor Don Lemon said the following on a popular podcast: "One, he has to deal with discrimination as a black man," said Lemon, "then, on top of that, he has to be gay -- and then, fame -- fame is not natural -- When something happens to you and it’s controversial, everyone is coming for you, and so I knew everyone would be picking apart his story.”

CNN’s April Ryan still hasn't deleted this tweet: "This attack on @JussieSmollett is a hate crime and should be treated as such!"

Amazingly, the pure activist Sopan Deb claimed that the media hadn't pushed this story as true. When Mollie Hemingway responded to him that he himself had pushed it as true -- not using the word "alleged" regarding the alleged attack, for example, but simply referring to "the assault" as if that was itself a fact -- he suddenly vanished.

This Twitchy article republishes Steve Krakauer's tweets documenting the many, many, many times the media skipped the word "allegedly" and straight-up claimed it to be a known fact that Jussie Smollet had been attacked by MAGA racists.

27 Read between the lines. Nowadays, people use "the media" as a synonym for "the press" because it seems more futuristic and accurate. So let's tale Tater's position and look at it another way:
There was a rush to judgment, I think it was mostly in the celebrity press and among activists and among Twitter people. I think it was a really careful reporting by news organizations. But it all gets lumped in together at the end of the day.

Okay, cool. So the assertion here is that those who rushed to judgement were tabloids and not the legitimate press, and that the legitimate press handled this well.

I accept that premise. By his own admission, then, the Tater is not a press man and CNN is a tabloid.

I rate this as accurate, zero Pinocchios.

38 Ace, you correctly note that "journalists" now spend more time on Twitter than actually working.

But what you don't know is that they are REQUIRED by management to promote their stories and "brand themselves" on Twitter these days. Starting about two or three years ago, it became part of the job decription at most media outlets that journalists MUST actively engage on social media to "increase their platform." I know several journalists and they ALL say they must now spned most of their time on twitter -- or get fired. My firends actually all hate doing it, but they do it reluctantly anyway, hoping that soon the management will see that "social media engagement" in fact does nothing to increase readership or viewership.

Not that I'm defending Brian Stelter here, but it's an interesting tidbit to know. CNN undoubtedly forces him (and their other personalities) to constantly tweet.

I'd like to say they don't have 2 brain cells to rub together, but they know full well what they're doing. I'd wager that a decent enough percentage of their viewership will never really find out that Jussie invented this, or enough of what they said was true to make it all true.

Yeah... it's a fine line to walk though.

The last thing you want is to look like total dicks by making it look like the police department does not take, a, say, claim of brutal rape, seriously.

There's a policy reason for treating all accusations seriously, too -- you want victims to come forward without fear of potentially being branded liars, or feeling judged, not believed by the police, or that they're being treated like suspects, not victims.

113 Has anyone heard this story about Elon Musk distancing himself from OpenAI? OpenAI developed this natural language AI that can basically take a two sentence blurb and blow it out into a very convincing fake news story. I'm not sure if that's why Musk cares, but a lot of people reported on it in a very concerned manner. Oh no, the fakest news ever, by a machine!

My question: Why do we care? Why is modern journalism or fiction or the blurring of the two - this propaganda, this opinion masked as reporting, this artistic license to quickly turn a single sentence about an event into "content" and a whole article, this wishcasting and selective reporting to validate the reporter's worldview - why is that okay when "journos" do it but bad when machines do it?

I'd argue we ought to widely disseminate this OpenAI solution. It's the proper end to the brand of news we now consume. At least, knowing it is there, the reader would be obliged to question and corroborate everything. Skepticism would overwhelm the Jussies before their stories get off the ground. That is a real and worthwhile blow to the Twitter echo chamber that foments stories like the above.

Oh, I think the media will downplay the report, and I think we're already seeing previews of how they will spin it -- "no confirmed connection between trump and putin" or "...was unable to corroborate collusion between trump and putin" or "unable to find hard evidence of collusion" and they will continue to point out, in conspiratorial tones, that several people from the trump campaign have been found guilty of crimes.

So, you know... the undercurrent of the reporting will be that while mueller couldn't prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, it likely still happened.

Yes, but - what if their testimony is, "We only sent that to him because he paid us to do it, and we did it exactly how he said to do it." In that case, then it's not a "threat" at all, because the recipient had invited it and paid for it, and the only crime is when Smollett himself lied and claimed it was a "threat" when he knew very well it wasn't.

Secondarily, it's common for anyone who turns States Evidence in a conspiracy case to get immunity in exchange for testimony against the ringleader.

I agree with Harry's points - I believe that in order to be considered a part of a conspiracy to make a false report, they would have to have done something to actually make or support the false report. I think they can argue that they just did a job they were paid to do, they had no idea what Jussie was going to do next, and they had no idea he was going to make a false report.

I back that up with the observation that apparently, that is exactly what they told the police when they were picked up for questioning. The charge they were picked up on was the charge that Jussie had filed, that he had been attacked. After they were questioned, those charges were all dropped.

Oh sure, they'd all be patting him on the back, winking at his clever trick, give him a ride home again. One of us, no big deal, son. Just don't get caught by the press doing it, makes us all look bad, you know? That's how white people and the cops get along, just ask any paranoid black guy.

244 The Nigerian brothers could possibly have been charged with some sort of conspiracy - they cooperated and that is why the cops are not pursuing it.

What is jus supersweet is that the cops told Jussie, hey, we got the guys that ddid it, you want to prosecute, and he said yes, then they told him it was the Nigerian brothers.

So he was ready to jail some random people in furtherance of his game.

Then of course there were the Covington kids who were wearing their MAGA souvenir hats when a mob of black a-holes started yelling at them and calling them lice and faggots and "incest kids" and other insults, before the lefty Native a-hole walked over and started pounding his drum in the one kid's face, trying to start something.

I dunno exactly when, but supposedly not long before it people said the van didn't have all that crap on it. Could just have been rumors. But the guy didn't have the means to send fake bomb packages to multiple states and pay for hand deliveries. And the bombs were all ridiculous fakes, to begin with. And CNN was so comfortable with the alleged bomb they dumped it out of the package then gathered around taking pictures of it, instead of panicking and clearing the building.

There is a requirement of an "overt act" taken to further the conspiracy, to differentiate a real conspiracy from a bullshit session. but any of their acts, such as taking money, buying rope, going outside to fake the attack, etc., are obviously overt acts in furtherance of the conspiracy.

Not to be argumentative... and I don't have the statute in front of me... but, I would imagine an element of the crime would involve something along the lines of "with the intent to intimidate."

If it was just a "joke" or "publicity stunt" (as far as they knew), then all they were doing was mailing a letter and some aspirin to a friend, at the friends behest.

I'd have to look at the exact wording of the statute.

I'm also giving these guys the benefit of the doubt -- I assume their buddy conned them. It's possible they were in on the whole thing from the beginning and knew exactly what was going on. I have no idea.

Yeah being a cop is mostly following routine and procedure, and most of the time it works. you do not understand the crime of conspiracy.

If conspiracy was no different than just breaking the law, there would be no need for a separate law for it. That is, you seem to think that "conspiracy to file a false report" is just the same law as "filing a false report" so if you dind't do the latter, you didn't do the former.

If you conspire to participate in burgling a house, but don't show up, but you DID buy rubber gloves for the gang and plan it, you're guilty of conspiracy to commit burglary, though not burglary itself.

You guys are conflating conspiracy TO COMMIT ANOTHER CRIME with the "another crime" itself. They are distinct crimes with distinct elements.

I don't think they were involved in the actual crime, which was filing the false police report.

You may be right, though, that those two incidents would be treated as one (attack & police report) by the law. I'm not sure. Criminal stuff is not my forte, and I know nothing about Illinois criminal law.

It opens up the intriguing possibility of a court hearing where Jussie is now claiming they were in on it all the way and knew everything, in an attempt to drag them down, and the 2 brothers on the other hand testify that they knew nothing of what was going to happen, that the Brotha' Set Them Up. That would be delicious!

(Personally I'd be betting on Jussie's credibility being a lot worse than theirs)

You may be right, though, that those two incidents would be treated as one (attack & police report) by the law. I'm not sure. Criminal stuff is not my forte, and I know nothing about Illinois criminal law.

...

i repeat: Conspiracy is the mere AGREEMENT that one or more of the group will commit a crime. It is not the commission of the crime itself, which is covered by its own separate crime.

Conspiracy is an AGREEMENT. that's what the crime is.

If conspiracy was no different than committing the crime you agreed to do, there would be no need of a separate law criminalizing conspiracy.

Posted by: ace at February 19, 2019 12:32 PM (PbpT7)

I know what conspiracy is, I'm arguing something a little more nuanced than that -- for a conspiracy to be criminal, you need to have 2 or more people to conspire to commit a crime.

Pretending to assault your buddy at his behest is probably not a crime. But we can all agree that the 2 brothers and jussie conspired to do that.

But I'm saying that, as far as I can tell from what I've read so far, the brothers had nothing to do with the police report part. For all we know, they had NO idea he was planning on calling the cops. We don't even k now if Jussie was planning on calling the cops. (Recall, his "friend" is the one who forced him to file a police report). It's possible he was just planning on having his agent or whoever go to the media with the story.

But you might be right -- that might all be one incident (attack and police report), but I would think that determining how it would be treated would be jurisdiction-specific.

Or maybe you're totally right and I'm drawing a distinction here that doesn't actually exist. As I said, my knowledge of criminal law is limited to what I learned in required courses in law school, so... fairly limited.

Yes, and Conspiracy has to be a group agreement to DO some criminal act. But if they just thought they were acting out a scene for a private project, and they testify that they never realized it was going to lead to a false police report being filed, then there is no conspiracy. The only witness who could counter that is Jussie, but his credibility is now at Zero.

It's a matter of record that they never filed any report themselves, and that they appear to have been telling the police the truth about all of it.

The Progressive media and related ecosphere lives in a fictional alternative universe bubble, where they have straw-manned the other half of the country as racist, misogynistic, gay-hating Nazis - and act out on that straw-man belief. They are so cocooned in their bubble, they can't see the world outside. Someday, it will go down as the largest example of mass hysteria in history.

406 Padres continue to look like one of the worst managed organizations in baseball. First they gave Eric Hosmer something like $160m, and now Machado? Machado is worth that much to a contending team - the Padres were 66-96 last year and won't be much better this year. They have good young talent they lack a single average starting pitcher. And if Machado does live up to the deal and they're contending in a few years, he can opt out after Year 5 for more money from somebody else.

Ironically, that's why the Mets got rid of Bonilla. They still owed him something like $30 million on his contract back in 2000 but wanted him gone.

So rather than pay him off they negotiated this crazy deal that pays him $1.2 million per year over 35 years. And every year Mets fans get to be pissed off at what a clown show the Mets front office has been for pretty much their entire existence.
