Welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Put down the snow shovels and the umbrella laced drinks and enjoy the world of pets.

Misanthropic Acres has about 36" of snow on the ground. Our dogs are having a hard time getting around. I'll be using the snow blower this weekend in the back yard.

For those of you in snow country, what do you do for your pets to make their lives easier?

A Little of This. A Little of That.

American settlers had dogs. What did they eat? Dog bread! H/T Hank Curmudgeon

In an era long before pet stores and commercial dog food, what did Appalachian settlers feed their dogs?

Not too long ago, I asked my grandmother this question and her answer was quite interesting, “Each Saturday, my mother would take all of our table scraps that weren’t considered unhealthy for the dog and bake it together — we called it ‘dog bread’ and it was the dog’s food for the coming week.”

There is always "one", isn't there? Busy body evicts cat.

A California fire department had to evict their beloved cat after it received a complaint about the animal being around fire equipment and supplies.

Edna the cat was evicted from Station 49 of the San Francisco Fire Department after the city received an anonymous complaint about the animal's location near medical equipment.

Missing socks? It just might be your dastardly cat.

It’s a universal truth that socks tend to go missing — they get mismatched or they altogether vanish.

But Kim Crosland, a graphic designer in New Zealand, knew that the rate at which her own socks were disappearing was extreme.

Crosland and her family started to notice it two years ago. "We just thought the socks were getting lost in the washing or getting misplaced," Crosland told The Dodo.

Then, one day, speaking to a neighbor, Crosland realized she wasn't alone. "One of my neighbors had mentioned their socks going missing and we laughed about it," she said. "Our sock pile had dwindled as well."

Usually, the socks would disappear overnight, sometimes right out of her shoes.

Meet The PetMorons

"I double dog dare you to throw this ball"

Hermes, rescue Lab-Airedale, is intensely projecting that thought into your skull.

Artemis, mini Golden Doodle, is just looking for treats.

Hermes has a hypersonic tail stub, Yoda ears, AT-AT legs and Wookie speech patterns. He's a real StarWars dog. Just like that Last Jedi thing was a dog. AmiRight.

Artie just hypnotizes people with her tail and licks 'em to death.

I'm just a blog reader. Never a commenter. Never even a comment reader. (Wha?) Don't even call me lurker.

Terry

(Hermes will wookie for treats.)

Adorable dogs Terry. Thanks for commenting, lurking submitting your photo and story. Stick around we don't bite.

Been lurking around the blog for a long time, and I thought I'd pitch in with my two adorable deplorables. The one curled up in my belt is Angus, the Platonic ideal of the word "galoot" - rambunctious, friendly and slightly dumber than a pile of his own fur. In the foreground is his sister Rally, who at six and a half pounds is the undisputed queen of the house. They've been steadily transforming my paychecks into vet bills and used litter for about thirteen and a half years now, after I went to a Humane Society event in Omaha looking for *a* cat and the furry little devils were being all adorable at me so I couldn't bear to split them up. Had a nasty scare with them, especially Rally, after they had a bad reaction to their rabies vaccine last month and stopped eating for a few days. With a great deal of prayer and an assist from St. Francis they pulled through, much to the collective relief of their humans, and are back to their usual shenanigans. Hopefully they keep it up for a long while yet! -Stephen

Talk about a big heart, adopting 2 cats at one time. Awesome. We are happy to hear that your scare is over and all is well with Rally. Thanks for sharing with us.

Here is Darla, my smooth-haired fox terrier. My daughters and I got her from a town south of us—Amo, Indiana—at a place we nicknamed the Poop Farm, because that is what they had the most of. Dogs, cats, goats, ducks, chickens, all for sale there. Darla loves the snow and is a great little friend -AgathaPagatha

Amazing how dogs love the snow. Good thing little Darla isn't way up north in snow country. It sounds like she has quite the life with you folks. Thanks for sharing.

Not an oaf, lurker or lout, but I can be a poltroon in times of great danger, unless I have my magic weapon, called by the elves a "Browning Semi-Automatic". You remember Saki, our rice wine kitteh. You had a picture of her watching college football on my knee. Here she is ready for me to take her to work. She'd be fantastic, better than most I've worked with. Too bad I'm retired. -Ken

Good to see you guys again here at the Pet Thread. Saki appears to be quite comfy in the world of labor. Thanks for the submission.

Our bearded dragon Newbie enjoying a snoozer in the warm spot in front of our wood stove. He’s spent much of the winter asleep, since it’s too chilly to be out on our porch. He will wake up though for his favorite bugs or slices from an orange. -Christopher

Newbie is no dummie. I think most of us would enjoy curling up in front of that wood stove. Looks comfortable. We don't see too many bearded dragon submissions. Thanks.

Mis Hum, I'm sending you a real bull story of how a foundling calf turned into a pet. I will tell his story in the comments so as not to take up too much space. Ben Had

OK Ben, spill the story. Your pet looks delicious. I think we are all waiting for how this little calf became a big bull and a pet.

6 Brushing a dogs teeth ?

My old man, who spends way more money on his two toy dogs than he ever did on us three kids, took one of 'em in for some cleaning. He knew there might be a tooth or two pulled.

Seventeen teeth later ... how does a dog rot out seventeen teeth. Is the dog on meth ? Is the old man and the dogs just crashing on the couch every evening, knocking back RC Cola and swishing Moon Pies ?

7 I used to make a circuit in the yard for the puppehs... with a couple jug handles and a large spot or two cleared for them to poop - using the snow blower.

They loved it when the snow go so deep the track turned into trenches.

8 For those of you in snow country, what do you do for your pets to make their lives easier?

Teh kittehs have a heated bed big enough for both of them in my bedroom, plus a rectangular pad on the window seat with a heating element inside that warms up when they sit on it. This little bit of luxe allows them to sit and look out the living room window and watch the neighbors trying to walk their dogs in the snow.

So far none of the local SJWs have asked my cats to check their feline privilege. I expect teh kittehs would reply that they are both felines of color (FOCs) and are gender non-binary (IOW, neutered/spayed).

47 Vanya used to transport socks. Not steal or hide, just convey them. He would go up to the laundry basket, take one single sock in his mouth, come back downstairs, and place it in a pile by the couch. Give a plaintive meow that said "I do not get adequate recognition for the important and difficult work I do around here", groom himself, and then go back up to repeat the process.

If I had a cat that would collect socks and take them upstairs to the laundry basket, it would have been like living inside an Escher lithograph.

50 Are you going to exchange MAGA hats as well as rings? With teh kitteh as ring bearer?
---

Well, he had three cats and I had one, so the plan was to have the cats hitched up to a crystal cinderella carriage that would hold the ring pillow and majestically precede me down the aisle. However, cats are hard to be trained, so we'd need an automaton system for the track, and we'd harness the cats in somewhow. Unfortunately, I lost my cat (RIP sweet Penny) and he lost his a week later (RIP princess Trucker), then he got a new cat. That's three cats. That's not harness friendly, so I had to scrap the idea.

And, much to my chagrin, he is not letting me transfer the automation budget to the laser package.

Sigh. So many compromises....

I am bad to take them off and not stash in a pocket but getting much better since he will grab them, even if they are set on a chair or something and outside he dashes off and buries them somewhere.

Weasel, Daughter H suggested that trick, but the one time I tried it we had so much snow, that I could barely find the tarp, and once I found it, the snow load was so heavy I couldn't move it.

I resorted to digging a racecourse with multiple turnoffs for Conor as I have done many times before.

I need to find a picture of this during a heavy snowfall (heavy for here not heavy for MisHum).

126 I have mentioned this before, but Ajax is fascinated and delighted by snow. He will trot around with his nose just under the surface of the snow, digging a trench with his nose.

If there are non-hard drifts he will run right up to one, then insert his muzzle up to his eyes. Then pull it out, covered in snow. Shake his head, then look at me and give me the doggy grin.

He is a strange dog.

Ice however, he is not a huge fan of. I think it is the only time he actually feels the cold because it starts to freeze his paws, I think. Probably also irritates it because of the ridges and sharp edges and so forth.

127 My youngest son's cat, Gray Cat, passed away a few hours ago. He had an appointment with the vet to have the cat put down at noon, but poor little Gray Cat didn't wait.

I don't know how old Gray Cat was, but I know my kid had him for at least fifteen years. At the time he got Gray Cat, he and his twin sister were sharing a cat friendly apartment and they had a second cat, Orange Cat. When the twins went their separate ways, my son took Gray Cat and my daughter took Orange Cat. Orange Cat had to be put down right after Christmas. It just seems strange to me that they died so close together even though they hadn't seen each other for at least ten or twelve years.

169 When we rescued our pup it didn't stop snowing for 2 months. Many trails were opened (tall boots) to create quite a run thought the yard. All that dog saw of e outside world was snow trenches 3 ft high. As she came of age she'd attempt the occasional escape, only to disappear in the powder.
Finally, mid-spring we had a brief melt / freeze. Next morning she cleared the wall and didn't sink! A new world revealed, she sprinted for the tree line and freedom, but realized too late that 4WD doesn't help you stop - and slid chuckwagon style into the first tree! - couldn't stop laughing.

About Bully-One of the pastures used to have a lot of Johnson grass in it and it grows to 4/5 feet tall. In the evening , sitting out behind the barn with a drink I would catch a glimpse of some small black thing moving through the grass. Probably a dog, huh.

Nope it was Bully at the age of about two months. The grass finally died back enough to see him for real.

Not being one to look a gift calf in the mouth I kept him. At that time I was keeping cattle to work the horses on so I opened the gate to see if Bully would come along with the other cows.

Sure enough. He was so little, I honestly don't know how he survived with nothing but grass , a mineral tub and water. Especially with all the coyotes around. I wish I could have figured out how he managed to get a drink out of the trough because it was taller than he was.

As he got older he would lead all the other cattle to the pen so he could get his extra feed, fly spray and head rubs. He made life very easy for me with several changes of cattle.

Somewhere I saw an interview with Mr. Ganz and the subject of the parodies was discussed. Fun stuff.

--The studio that made Downfall kept squashing all the parodies on Youtube, which was spectacularly stupid, because they were the best marketing for the film itself, which is excellent.

The theory I heard is that the dog hate is because dogs guard their owners homes and bark at thieves and robbers in the night!

I'll be interested to find out when and where you finally find the cone of shame.

259 That story is a hoot, Ben Had. You saved that little calf twice -- first, from freezing to deatg, second, he didn't wind up on a Moron's beloved grill.

264 Downfall was such a good movie, I hated to see all of the farces of it.
Posted by: navybrat, sometime commentater at February 16, 2019 05:18 PM (w7KSn)

If it weren't for the parodies, I'd likely never have heard about it or likely not bothered to watch it. And you're right, it was wrenchingly good. Not exactly the feel-good comedy of the summer, but powerfully well done.

I have to admit, though, the one about Hitler wanting tickets to Cubs games was pretty good.

266 Ok, I'm gonna drop this here.

My godfather was a plumber.

He got called to a house and it was obvious that someone had been working underneath the kitchen sink.

When he asked the lady what the deal was she related this tale.....

There had been a leak under the sink ....forever.

It became a thing between the man and his wife "When are you gonna fix the leak ?"

"I'll get to it " ?

This went on for quite awhile.

One day, the guy gets out of the shower, and it starts again..."When are you gonna fix the leak ?"

"You want me to fix the leak ? OK i'll fix the leak !"

So, there's the guy, lying on his back, buck nekkid, with a wrench in one hand, and a flashlight in the other going to work.

And the family cat starts batting his pecker. The guy swung the wrench at the cat and hit himself in the testicles, and knocked himself unconscious and was taken away in an ambulance.

268 Ben Had

Stray calf, indeed. Absolutely not rustling.

Wa she weaned when you found him?

The story my cattle raising uncle told me was his friend and neighbor boasted of never eating steak from his own cattle. My uncle was cooking steak for the two of them. My uncle said "Well, tonight you are."

In my experience, bull valves are essentially worthless, unless castrated and raised for beef. (Not raised for stud)

Maybe that's why nobody claimed your bull.

273 That photo of the Yorkie looking out at the snow could absolutely be my Maggie, whose pic I recently submitted to the Pet Thread--she was wearing goggles. If there is a whiff of snow on the porch I don't even bother to get dressed for the morning walk. I just open the door, she takes one look, and we both go back to bed. When I got her she was 7 months old, and trained to use a piddle pad by her first owners (a nurse and a cop who worked long shifts). So I continued using the pads because I couldn't "wean" her off of them. I swear her bladder is the size of a macadamia nut. What's hilarious is that she pees about every 30 feet during her walks, and by the time we get a couple of blocks, she's just going thru the motions....the nut is dry.

274 Mis Hum -
"I'll be using the snow blower this weekend in the back yard."

You missed a great opportunity to see what your little guy would do in a 3 ft escarpment. Could have been funnier than anything...

275 Would he attack the snow and try to find a place to do his thing, or would he have just said, "F*ck it, i'll crap on the sidewalk just outside the door"
The latter is my dogs goto all the time.

That's the funniest home plumber job story I've ever read, and some of those home plumber job stories are pretty funny. That story reads like a classic cartoon.
